this is delia news live from berlin the u.s. and iran a trade verbal blows as the munich security conference draws to an end iran's foreign minister bahama job ads are brief condense u.s. policy on iran accusing washington of ignoring his country's right to self-determination and this comes after u.s. vice president mike pence demands a tougher stance on iran from europe we'll go live to munich also coming up. the most senior catholic cleric to be defrocked in modern times the vatican expels

a former u.s. cardinal from the priesthood over sexual crimes against adults and children expulsion comes as the church prepares for a summit on sex abuse cases. thanks for joining us i'm marian epstein iran's foreign minister mohammad javad zarif has delivered a defiant speech at the munich security conference he condemned calls from washington for the european union to abandon the iran nuclear deal and accuse the u.s. of trying to exercise undue influence on the middle east his remarks rounded out a contentious conference where german chancellor angela merkel and mike pence also advanced opposing visions on the iran and the direction of their nation's foreign policy. what it has today morphed iran's foreign minister mohammed javert sorry for
2:02 pm
sharply criticizing the u.s. and dismissed vice president mike pence this recent demand that the e.u. withdraw from the nuclear treaty with iran under mr pence repeated the scars. when he added gently demanded that europe must join the united states in undermining its own security and breaking its obligations. by german foreign minister who assured his iranian counterpart in direct talks in munich that germany and the e.u. want to stick to the agreement as long as iran does the e.u. wants to enable trade with iran but serif suggested that europe is not going far enough or. europe needs to be ridding to get rid. if it wants to swim against the dangerous part of the u.s.
2:03 pm
you need after this. but you refuse under a lot of pressure from the u.s. and mike pence increase it at the security conference. the time has come for our european partners to stop undermining u.s. sanctions against this murderous revolutionary regime. chancellor merkel refused to withdraw from the treaty germany feels that it is the only way to money iran's nuclear program head is in view had it was like oh my do we help our common cause our common aim of containing the damaging or difficult influences of iran by withdrawing from the one remaining agreement couldn't even order or do we help it more by keeping the small anchor we have in order to maybe exert pressure in other areas. well come the european commitment but called for more action he added that the nuclear treaty is appropriate at the best that can be achieved.

and joining us now from the munich security conference is the w.'s chief political correspondent well and a crane hello to you melinda so as we just heard the iranian foreign minister mohammad zarif delivered quite a forceful condemnation of the united states and also its efforts to pressure european countries to abandon the nuclear deal with iran how was his speech received in munich. he go it pretty strong applause at the end of his appearance and i say appearance because after giving his speech he then joined in a dialogue with the b.b.c.'s leading middle eastern correspondent least a set who pose some very very tough questions and he stayed through that he maintained his composure he answered her questions and i think that a plus for him was partly also for that reason because we saw a lot of leaders essentially coming here to give monologues and in fact the
2:05 pm
conference host said at the beginning of his own remarks at the opening of the conference to many world leaders are coming here to talk how do you teach other rather than to sit down and try to talk with each other so i think people were receptive to the fact that mr zarif did engage in dialogue and certainly europe has indicated that it has every intention at least of getting its feet wet to put to use the metaphor that he used there in the report that we saw the fact is that europe three european countries the u.k. france and germany have moved to create a separate payment system so that european companies that trade with iran in certain areas will not hopefully face u.s. sanctions now it is a work in progress and mr zarif indicated that iran is not sure it really will lead to more european investment in iran but the fact is that europe is moving ahead to
2:06 pm
do what leaders here believe they can do to keep that iran nuclear deal in existence well and i think it's safe to say that this year a security conference really highlighted the rift between the e.u. and the united states when it comes to dealing with world crises so where does this leave transatlantic relations and moving forward once the conference is over. in a tough spot both commissioner again the conference host he has just been on the stage saying that he felt that last year when the conference title asked whether we're going to the brink in terms of our ability to use multilateral cooperation to solve world problems that he thought maybe many people felt that was phrased a bit too strongly he said this year he absolutely feels there is a clear understanding that we have
2:07 pm
a real problem and frankly that problem was in evidence here a number of leaders paid lip service or paid tribute to multilateral cooperation but the fact is what was on display here in speech after speech was real polarization even in that crucial transatlantic alliance. is chief political correspondent melinda crane reporting from the security conference in munich many thanks indeed. now u.s. president donald trump has threatened to release captured fighters from the so-called islamic state if europe does not take them in this comes after trump's shock december announcement that the militant group had been defeated and that u.s. troops would be withdrawn from syria in a tweet called on britain france germany and others to quote take back over eight hundred isis fighters that we captured in syria and put them on trial he said the alternative is quote not
2:08 pm
a good one and that we would be forced to release them pope francis has expelled former u.s. cardinal theodore mccarrick from the priesthood the move came after vatican officials found him guilty of sexual abuse against both adults and minors mccarrick is the highest ranking catholic cleric to receive this sanction in modern times you know spent was made just days before the pope hosts a church summit on preventing child abuse. the punishment handed down to this american cleric is unprecedented the former archbishop of washington theodore mccarrick soliciting sex from aspiring priests and abused at least two minors between one nine hundred seventy and one nine hundred ninety. he had already been stripped of his status as a cardinal last july in itself a bombshell for the church father bad harken caught the vatican you say the move is a good thing. i. lot is quite clear in this regard the
2:09 pm
problem in the past was that it wasn't applied the issue was covered up people look the other way now it's simply gone through official channels with a very prominent figure it's not a papal decision but it really should be. the. last summer pope francis ordered an investigation into mccarrick the vatican reached its verdict on january eleventh mccarrick of peoples were rejected beginning this thursday leaders of bishops conferences from around the world will meet with pope francis for four days in rome on the agenda abuse in the catholic church and how to protect children critics accuse the pope of doing too little too late in dealing with allegations of abuse victims of charge the vatican with not paying enough attention to their claims. with me in the studio for more on this is deep religious affairs correspondent martin gox oh hello to you martin so this punishment is of course significant but listen we know there have been thousands of cases of abuse within the church so why
2:10 pm
is it a mcharg the first former cardinal to be dismissed over these things well by and large i mean we do not really have a breast of and i mean a mother in bresson for a cardinal to be stripped are the from you know we have to make sure that people understand that he actually sort of went left he supposed us a cardinal in july of last year and so technically speaking he was the frog once he had already become essentially a former cardinal i mean nonetheless this is an extremely significant step by the by the congregation of the office of the doctrine of the faith which is not the pope himself but the pope had to actually give the go ahead so to say precisely because it's such a high standing figure somebody that within the catholic church of the u.s. was really the very very pious right and of the very highest friend so right before you know we're about to have this summit on sexual abuse or summit on the
2:11 pm
protection of children is what the vatican is calling it which will start on thursday and will come to an end next sunday the seems this seems to be a very very strong opening shot warning shot perhaps talking about things to calm and bolasie that the church wants to take in relation to abuse so do you really see this as a shift in how the catholic church it will be dealing with sexual abuse in the future i don't think that this itself is. a major change i mean in the sense that you know in some senses quite ornamental is somebody that no longer count and really he has been essentially out of office for a year i mean he was leaving he's leaving no and i'm not sure what happens after this but he was leaning eastern kansas in a rural community in a monastery so quite clearly this was no longer a few years. that had any political muscle none the live once again somebody that is very high up it was very happy in the ranks and it's a name that is very fresh in the memory of everybody that has been following the story i think that what we need to pay attention now we swear this will be followed
2:12 pm
up with policy and protocols coming out of the summit next week or whether this is just a flesh and bone and this is something that will have actually no follow up all right so you say it's symbolic it's a positive sign but then what would it take to indicate that the catholic church is really ready to reform itself look i mean i don't think i think it's been clear now for essentially twenty years that the catholic church cannot reform itself twenty years is a very very long time to attack a problem that has not been attacked there is one main question that continues to be the one that they've got to look churches not answering is when will they turn everything's to national authorities and there is no sign of self yet that that will become church policy. is really his affairs correspondent martin goc many thanks for your insights you're welcome to ecuador now where scientists are celebrating the rediscovering of the marsupial horned frog last seen over
2:13 pm
a decade ago and considered extinct a colony of the frogs was found during a recent expedition into an endangered rain forest their habitat remains under threat from deforestation but there is now hope that this species can regenerate. this species believed extinct found hidden in the canopies here in ecuador chicago rain forest region thought to be home to thousands of undiscovered plants and animals the latest finding has thrilled conservationists. once you see an animal no one else has seen for over a long period of time maybe years or decades it's it's like the most exciting thing back that you can experience as a field biologist it's there's really a lot more work to this ride it's the first time some experts have ever seen a species unlike most other frogs the horn to female keeps its embryos in a pouch on her back during gestation an evolutionary marvel for scientists
2:14 pm
deforestation is a threat to this species and many others doctors are now breeding the frogs at a conservation center where the first frog legs are due to hatch in april. a leap of faith that they will one day thrive again in the wild. they're watching daily news coming up after a short break is going to sleep the show with all the action from saturday's games longsuffering stood guard here seen in white faced and uphill battle as high flying leipsic paid a visit which stood guard pull off the impossible to give their survival hope something. will have highlights from that game and all the others from match day twenty two coming up on the bundesliga with pablo foley alias. and you're up to date now on t.w.
