rescued forty one injured people and sent them to the hospital and our fire extinguishing operation is almost the last stage we are now searching the rubble in preparation for dampening the area is under way. right as it. initially struggled to get close to the scene because of heavy traffic and narrow alleyways around the area the death toll is expected to rise and some of the injured suffering critical. for more let's cross over to dhaka were journalist munyal khan is standing by for us leinil we understand that at least seventy people were killed in this fire and many were injured what more can you tell us about the victims. well you know the seven did did but is it too late to go far from the belief. go.

you say that at this fifty billion bar and in the hospital struggling for their life. by a factor six many. would die would have died in the in the barn and the flame was fairly strong in the b. tonight soledad looking for other tidbits to. do you know how this fire broke out how it started and why it is so quickly. so it is the firefighters and others saying that they would start this investigation regular in the morning. but the people nearby said that this so you know you. see and you see the guests leave their bars and exploded too with the transformer. and the fire.
9:05 am
started and the shots that get and spread because of the chemical stored holes. in the billy. does it would it do. spread out there now this is not the first fire in dhaka claimed many lives how much of a fire hazard is there in dakar particularly the old city what sort of challenges do firefighters face in trying to address this problem. well what is it that you see this because it is not the first time there was a diversity fire happened in two thousand and two to at least two hundred twenty four people killed on the spot and i said the old half that it's been distributed and the lanes in the north a pretty tiny small and had all of the end of the building said i was in the built

shoulder to shoulder and not properly north of course of shelley and i get dick good to say and believe in jesus exists. and of. all this long shops there are small factories can be defectors produce different. looks like. if. it's a trip and they keep going because in their stores. and plastic think most of them left shops. the fire broke and it might get into the storage market and then. in the flips would be would be used to lever to string to fight to get. these and the damages with the near end of the fire fighting drugs and the water is very limited. so

this time most of the fire trucks stage four hundred me just fine from the spot and then do just what are mine and thank you very much for bringing us up to date there that was journalist michael khan in dhaka. pope francis will today open a summit on sexual abuse in the catholic church attended by bishops from around the world the meeting comes after an avalanche of allegations against catholic priests accusing them of molesting young boys and raping nuns in the past the church has been reluctant to deal with these crimes which if now become a global issue let's look at a couple of examples ireland has seen reports of widespread sexual abuse in catholic institutions estimates put the number of overall victims there at fourteen thousand five hundred australia there more than fifteen thousand possible sex abuse
9:08 am
survivors have come forward since two thousand and twelve according to a national inquiry and in the united states while the number of survivors there is x. is suspected to be well over one hundred thousand one wednesday pope francis met with a sexual abuse survivor from yet another country polled and moderate the shinseki traveled to the vatican with a report on the many allegations against members of the clergy in poland after surviving abuse by a local priest founded the organization had no fear he and his fellow victims are still searching for justice. standing in front of this house. can't help but be overcome by memories of the crimes that were committed against him modoc was sexually abused here in his hometown. inside these very walls. he was only twelve years old when it happened. the perpetrator was the local priest . i didn't understand what was happening to me no one spoke to us
9:09 am
children about sexuality or masturbation. i didn't understand it and with it and it wasn't until i realized that this person had no right to do those things to me cited to stop coming here with me it's a good. it took a long time before he could speak about what happened to him his own father had left and the priest had been a father figure mark was an altar server at the local church when he was abused today there are three hundred thousand altar boys and girls in deeply catholic poland. although the subject was to bu for decades more reports of priests who sexually abused children are surfacing. the perpetrator took advantage of the fact that i came from a difficult family background and didn't want to talk about my feelings when he had
9:10 am
access to me and sexually abused me for months full of civilians and. the experience nearly destroyed monic he changed school several times he became increasingly isolated and began drinking heavily at age forty he was finally able to open up to a therapist. it was during one of those many sessions that i was able to talk about the abuse for the first time. i now also think my alcoholism was caused by my childhood experience. monuc has begun to fight back he's researched reports of sexual abuse and found one hundred fifty confirmed cases he says there are many more. thanks to mark's courage more and more people are taking to the streets to protest sexual abuse in the church now taking part in the vatican summit on sexual abuse he hopes officials will no longer keep the problem secret and will speak publicly about the incidents in poland. for more now
9:11 am
we're joined by our religious affairs correspondent martin got good morning martin so pope francis has called cardinals to rome to talk about the scourge of sexual child sexual abuse how significant is this for the catholic church and for victims like marc listen ski who we met in a report there well i mean everybody has great expectations it's unclear what is that people are actually expecting from the vatican has tried to sort of put some you know. down the excitement and sort of it has made it very clear that this will actually word for it and for most it's a bit of a conference and gathering in which people will be discussing the position of the church in relation to a responsibility transparency accountability what is not clear is whether any concrete policy and protocols will come out of this and this is i think by and large what most people would actually want to see what's going to actually happen at this conference that's going on for three days i understand what is going to
9:12 am
actually happen aside from ignore the. ging that there is a problem well i mean the way that the things that are it's really very much like a conference in a sort of word group so there are going to be meetings in the morning meetings throwed afternoon and there will be in the middle different plenary sessions in which different already has within the church but even some of them except colleges and people that come from n.g.o.s and so on will be essentially presenting their positions so there will be also significant amount of praying and devotional work done in relation to penance and you know of this is fine and well bed none of the basic issues are yet address which is what is the bolasie that the church will adopt in norther to address these issues well talking of policy i mean this is a big consultation exercise as you are describing with input from n.g.o.s to and victims can the problem though in the church really be addressed of sexual abuse against children by by priests can that problem really be addressed without ending
9:13 am
without fundamental reforms like ending celibacy for priests for example my opinion is that salutes is not directly connected to the question of abuse i think it's a lucy is something that is in shrine in many traditions particularly of the church is that you know it's a louis is actually mandatory as an obligatory ten and i think that one of the issues that you clearly have and i think that this has become very visible over a long but the long period of time i mean we've been on this and this particular set of cases for the last eighteen years so there's a very very long time it's very clear that the problem the structural problem is actually there are going to say sion they're going to say sion has a tendency to believe that they can actually solve their own problems within their own walls and they have actually shown that this is simply not the case so the question is really about the secrecy or the policy of secrecy and the relation to national justice systems martin thank you very much for your analysis religious affairs correspondent martin got there one. catch up on some other stories making
9:14 am
headlines around the world today french president mandela well has announced measures to counteract a rise in hate crimes against jews speaking at a dinner for jewish leaders he said the measures would include legislation to fight hate speech on the internet as well as making zionism part of the government's definition of anti-semitism. israeli prime minister binyamin us and yahoo's two main rivals are joining forces for the country's upcoming general election forward finance minister your lockheed has announced a centrist alliance with ex military chief of staff benny gantz if they win they say they will rotate as prime minister. then a chinese tortoise believed to have been extinct for more than one hundred years has been found alive in the galapagos islands an adult female specimen of the species known as. dino island toward his was discovered during
9:15 am
a recent expedition conservationists are preparing to search for more of the species in the galapagos. well here in germany a verdict is expected today in a court case that's being closely watched by former employees of the arms maker hecla and call it a bit on trial in stuttgart since may of last year they stand accused of illegally supplying mexico with hecla and call german made weapons. a courtin stood guard has been trying five former hacker cock employees on charges of exporting weapons illegally in two thousand and fourteen six people were killed in protests in the southern mexican city of equality and forty three students disappeared without a trace. police believe local criminals were behind the attack and that they were armed with assault rifles manufactured by the german company heckler and call.
9:16 am
weapons in a region to which they never should have been extorted according to german law overall between two thousand and six and two thousand and nine rifles and munitions worth four point one million euros ended up in the conflict ridden mexican province . there are several regions in the country that are blacklisted for export permits but state prosecutors say the employees hid the real decimation of the arms they were selling in their applications for export licenses. well joining me now is. political correspondent kate pretty good morning kate so first what are the defendants actually accused of doing in this case well we have five defendants on trial in the charge with violation of japanese exports and also war weapons export control laws now this is due to the export of more than four thousand assault rifles to mexico which we just saw that in their report specifically to areas which
9:17 am
were blacklisted under these export control laws and prosecutors say that these heckler employees who are on trial what in fact aware of the of the end destination of these weapons ok but apparently they're accused of trying to conceal the actual destination there is this an isolated case kate or is it symptomatic of a bigger problem well this case has indeed opened up a big problem in german exports and the responsibility of these five defendants has actually been mitigated by some evidence which was found during this trial which actually showed that there was actually irregularities in how the expert export certificates were drawn up by government authorities who apparently misinterpreted the law and so government authorities in this case exactly is worth pointing out that it's actually the german economy ministry in agreement with the
9:18 am
foreign ministry that actually is in charge of these decisions but in this case no government official has officially being charged over the crimes and this is something that the plaintiff is actually calling for to so raises questions also about government oversight when it. two arms exports interesting what sort of sentence could the defendants face if they're found guilty of the charges they're facing well prosecutors have called for prison sentences for just two of the of the defendants and that's the sales department manager for myself department manager and also a clerical welcome both of those that actually implicated in an e-mail. at the actually showed that the company was attempting to influence the end user agreement say so to say where these weapons were actually going to end up ok and i understand that a verdict is expected within hours so we'll see we'll be back with you i'm sure
9:19 am
thank you so much to that was kate brady from our political desk you're watching t.v. news still to come shall to give it everything they've got in the first leg of their champions league match up with manchester city but it's one of their former players heads the final say. now consumer groups in russia are warning about a decline in food standards they accuse companies of selling counterfeit products that are calling for more controls on the food industry situation has become worse since moscow banned imports of e.u. and u.s. food in response to sanctions imposed after russia addict's crimea w.'s mere drug store which has more. this is one happy cal she's allowed to go out regularly farmer vladimir correa loaf makes sure of that there are five cows in his ban about seventy kilometers north of moscow in the coming weeks they will be

russia and the kremlin slapped an import ban on food from the u.s. and the e.u. . after the embargo food producers focused on increasing production quality was just an afterthought. consumer advocates tracked down the food adulterated through inspections in the meantime fraud has taken on a whole new dimension. experts estimate the economic losses to be several billion euros a year but there's no political motivation to take action against the food swindlers . each year we need my. stricter food controls. statistics prove it or your situation has hardly improved in recent years you wish those. controls alone will not be enough overall russia must produce more high quality
9:22 am
food like to me it is doing what he can on his small fire. sports now to get some champions league soccer phoria round of sixteen in europe's top club tournaments and tom d.w. sports is here to talk first about the manchester city vs chaka match up last night in western germany good morning tom tough result they overshot the last night it was a very tough result in the end yeah but i mean it was also of course a very very tough fixture at manchester city are one of the best if not the best team perhaps in the world right now and shall have had a fairly underwhelming season so i think the result was probably to be expected what wasn't necessarily to be expected was the way the game went south made it very hard for their opponents but yeah we can take a look and see how the game unfolded. favorite city went in front of the old
9:23 am
through sergio quero off the loose pulse was pounced on by silver but soon turned the game on its head two goals for not be open today shortly before half time both of which came from the spot gave the hosts a shot lead going into the break the home crowd had plenty to shout about. but with five minutes to go a perfectly placed free kick from form a shy kid young stud leave royce and i leveled the schools sunday refused to celebrate against the club that made him. and there was yet another sting in the tyo some impressive strength and a characteristically cool finish from rai stirling gave his side a three two victory its advantage city during its of the second leg. so tell me you're saying that nobody really expected the result to be this close
9:24 am
zero but that nobody expected everybody expected to lose they put it that way but they didn't speak to be this close can be proud of the performance they certainly can you of course i mean they did have quite a bit of luck to have that goes by that goes as we saw all came from penalties often follows a response like to see in my opinion man city is the best team in the world right now the fact that we were able to contest very proud unfortunately it wasn't the right result for every time your kind of jury falcon midfielder he. says speaks for the whole team and saying they were very proud of their performance but of course in the end it's the result i'm not the performance or the pride that you can take in it that counts. shall have now go very very difficult job when they return to man just to sit in a couple of weeks time for the return leg it's hard to see them creeping through into the next round of fortunately. ok so what about the the other match last night
9:25 am
there are two of europe's storied clubs going up against each other would you make it that you have one i mean like you say two of europe's greats really two clubs with a lot of european trophies in their cabinets and two who just you know can look back on a proud history because there are plenty clubs who can do that but you know if anybody would my playing against them at the moment to who is a real powerhouses of the european game at the moment it's that act that's about madrid to mention them by name and event is that think shows as so you've been to starve or now to return to the city where you used to play for a out to face his former rivals didn't go so well for christiane of another unfortunately two late goals i'd like to go to madrid to new win for then. very frustrating for you guys that they didn't get an away goal so that's given them a bit of a hill to climb in the return leg as well tom thanks so much says tom you know i from d.w. sports for and just were given are the top stories we're following for you here on news today at
