a warehouse before spreading rapidly through the city's old town. hello i'm terry martin thanks for joining us pope francis has opened an unprecedented summit on sexual abuse in the catholic church with bishops from around the world francis opened the four day meeting by insisting that the church must listen to abuse victims and survivors have voiced concerns that the pope's efforts to raise awareness don't go far enough some it comes after an avalanche of allegations against catholic priests accusing them of molesting young boys and raping not let's listen now to more of what pope francis had to say. holy people of god are looking at us and do not expect from us simple and
10:02 am
predictable condemnations but concrete and effective measures. and joining us now is our religious affairs correspondent martine got martine pope francis has gathered cardinals from around the world there in rome to talk about the scourge of sexual abuse in the church how significant is this for the church and especially for the victims i mean it is quite significant i think that the words we just heard are actually are actually really quite impressive i mean the question then is where are these actually gets turned into something concrete but it's a major change of tone making the claim that we should actually sic benenson said you know transparency and look for apologies and brady and of the men that there be concrete actions taken by the church as a body so you know there is a lot of expectation and they think that the surge sort of the kind of things that people are expecting to hear well that is the big question of course as you pointed out in that speech we just heard the pope speaking in his opening speech of the
10:03 am
conference he said people expect more than just simple and predictable condemnations from this conference he said concrete and effective measures are wont to do you think those measures those concrete and effective measures the pope's talking about will be forthcoming i think it's extremely difficult to say i mean my sense is this being in the very very large political machine in being very difficult to steer and we've been talking about this for twenty years so nothing these days takes twenty years i think that we are probably at the final stages of the birth been going on for a very long time the very same time that was you know from blame and patient throughout the global church is something that could also take a very long time so what the great questions now is is the vatican itself the one that begins to put out names of people that had been accused or actually starts turning evidence to national authorities what is actually going to happen at this conference is going on for three days you've got all these cardinals gathered there
10:04 am
there are parts of the catholic church parts of the world where they don't really want to talk about this subject they might still be interested in covering it up what. going to happen other than just a lot of talk there will be a lot of talk there will be quite a bit of praying certainly but i think that you know in some sense things have come to a head mainly because there's been a lot of stories coming out over the last couple of weeks but also i think that because the defrocking of macquarie. two weeks ago or a week ago this was a very serious you know cardinal we didn't the american clergy means that the vatican means business and the people that had been someone to rome summoned to rome and that you know something he said it's unclear looking at it from the outside exactly what that is i want to rate a rate that there is a lot of attention but very little clarity of as to what this will result in so we're getting the impression the way this conference is structured with input from victims and n.g.o.s that the they are confronting the problem catholic church is at
10:05 am
least looking at this problem. but they're not looking at the question of sexual abuse of nuns apparently here which is something that is also shaken the church recently this is this entire summit is specifically about minors and i think that anybody who looks at it would admit that this is a particularly serious issue i think it's actually barely the most serious that other forms of sexual abuse or not but i mean it's so scandalous and it's so brutal in scope that it's understandable that this would be a major issue the question however is that we have now would really looks like a long history of cover ups and this is actually mean situational problem that sort of goes far beyond the particular incidents the question once again is where the church has the capacity to actually deal with it to keep watching this conference and see what comes out of it martin got a religious affairs correspondent thank you so much you're welcome. devastating fires killed at least seventy people in the bangladeshi capital dhaka more than fifty people are injured many with critical burns the fire started in
