calling it ludicrous under the current law homo sexual acts between men can be punished with long jail terms discrimination against gay people is widespread in. our correspondent melanie card of all is following these developments outside of the courthouse in nairobi so you know melanie this was a decision which was really highly anticipated in the country why was the post poll out the activists i have spoken to believe that the court might be stalling this is of course not but this judge has been saying he cited muma as challenges he gave the impression that they have really gone well beyond the amount of facts still left to be done for example joked about the kind of document but just one of them himself at the moment and also explained the two judges who are ruling on this case with him currently out of town but this is of course

a huge disappointment for so many people to hoping here today for a monumental decision to be taken which could potentially have a ripple effect across the region i met one of them and for mary with so amy time now repeal one sixty two could really change everything take. the skulls. of the fly. past. so why would someone just because i choose to love for a. if it one for marrying one for his cause he would have a hard time guessing what she's been through mary identifies as an s.p. and that is why has stepfather cost her out into the street when she was still a child that is why she was attacked by a group of men as a teenager and infected with hiv. it took.

a left over from the colonial era from the colonial rule rather than a truly african law and now we have these judges deciding whether or not to decriminalize same sex relations where could this possibly go melanie i mean do we have an indication as to how they might rule. anything could happen really the chances are fifty fifty but the activists i've spoken to are hopeful their course is the optimistic because kenya has set precedents in the past for example last year a court here ruled that forced anal examinations which were used to determine whether man engaged in sex and now illegal so there is hope and people like mary and the activists here they won't stop fighting until one day they are all seen as as equal citizens and can love whoever they choose to love melanie toward the ball joining us from nairobi thank you melanie. one of victims of rape and

border with colombia the billionaire business and richard branson is sponsoring the live aid style show on the colombian side of the frontier have a look at. british billionaire richard branson has big plans for the colombian border town of kuta he says his goal is to raise money for food and medical supplies and ultimately get it across the border to venezuela. meanwhile the everyday struggle for locals goes on many cross the border here regularly to pick up desperately needed supplies there hoping to see change soon. we want to be free we want to be able to cross the border we want freedom and the government to fulfill. its what we all want by god and election so we can have a new president. however i've lost all hope and they're taking extreme measures describing how it

feels to be leaving their country for good. anything. right now i'm sad. this is degrading for a human being and about a very degrading with anything and the. president nicolas maduro is also taking extreme measures he sees any attempt to bring in aid as a pretext for military intervention on thursday he closed the country's border with brazil and said he was also considering closing the frontier with colombia. you know for a complete closure of the border with colombia i'm considering that. if it's best for a man to be prepared it's even better for a nation to be prepared. that could make things tricky for opposition leader and self-proclaimed president one quite oh he left his home in caracas on thursday to make the identical on the journey to the colombian border he and thousands of his

supporters are promising to bring u.s. aid into the country but he's not yet explained how they plan to do it. meanwhile back at the border just across the river from cooter president maduro who is organizing his own concert on venezuelan soil. let's get more now we're joined by jennifer communal gonzales so jennifer tell us what does each side hope to achieve with the concerts on the border with colombia. well for richard branson side it's about raising funds raising awareness and supporting this push to bring aid to venezuela but for my guru it's to counter that he wants to counter this message he wants to say oh look i can also stage a concert i can also bring my people as well and to sort of battle was you say with public opinion as well but we haven't received a lot of details from the from the mother knows side about what this concert sales
11:15 am
who's going to be in it and so but we have received a lot of information about the other concerts so it will be interesting to see both play out and just how the government tries to compete with it was there richard branson. and consumers is going to be huge so i mean that's the situation on the border but let's talk about what's going on in the country itself because madonna has government has been preventing aid from entering the country it has shut the border with brazil as we know talked with us a little bit more about the current humanitarian situation in venezuela. well as its mission is dire in particular with the with the situation of medicine shortage of medicines people don't have medicines all of the hospitals the public off the rolls are collapsed people can't get basic things such as syringes and many many people say that when they have problems and they go to the hospital they have to bring their own medicines and that is kind of quite the critical issue in fact in sankey stole a city that is near kuta a group of doctors got together to denounce the situation and say that they want
11:16 am
the humanitarian aid to come in because this is very dire but it's also a shortage of food it is really really difficult for people right now so that is the question are people going to see mother are closing off the borders those aid and say no we want this aid and then rise up that is what a long way there was hoping how much support does he have quite oh. well international support he has plenty in venezuela of course what the opposition is session is completely behind him and we know that some elements of the army some some higher in these not so many higher ranking officers have gone to him but some support has broken but the needle has really not pushed enough and so he really needs to build more support he needs that rather population but is difficult is there to go because i army is still standing behind them and so we shall see what happens if that can change this weekend jennifer communal gonzales thank you.

three people on the italian island of sardinia are going to the polls on sunday it's a regional election but the outcome will be studied across the country commentators believe that it will serve as an indicator of the growing popularity of italy's far right league party their leader and deputy prime minister mattel's salvini has been campaigning in sardinia and as. reports he has been using rallies to stir up resentment toward immigrants and other minorities. they celebrate him like a rock star i feel says the middle east all right interior minister is cranking out . here in this small town square in sardinia i was only one flag one month with one identity history culture and tradition which must survive. to be able to pull in sharp rhetoric against migrants and
11:18 am
praise them the whole length of the table is not to back. lection sardinian is only a regional one italy's paul writes is flying high and nationwide a situation that's so he now wants to exploit even if he's keeping a low profile in front of our camera not only if i should meet is the bill in the know i'm minister of the interior and it's not my aim to become prime minister my business right now is public safety the mafia drugs i wanted to have this job and i want to keep doing it but only a few months into an easy government coalition between salvini sleek and the five star movement of luigi maju italy's far right senses a chance to govern alone the league has already overtaken its previously stronger coalition partner the poles. the setting for this political battle is now the holiday island of sardinia here both camps are pitted against each other. in the

regional boat. for an entire week interior minister much he also vini as been travelling around the islands to complain it shows just how important this region election here in sardinia has become it is a test of strength for the parties and an indicator that the entire country of italy is moving even further to their right at sardinia second largest paper than we have outside dania the elections are of course front page news salvini himself even paid a visit to the news from. me as i think salvini is just waiting for the european elections and if his party wins which is pretty likely then the time is right for him to pull out of the government she's especially since if the five star movement loses again they will be in a serious crisis with. his coffee saying i can use either morning or had a small market in the west of the island so the news media more supporters of

studio by my tail got a. he is an expert on italian and european politics at oxford university welcome to the program thank you how important do you see sunday's election in sardinia for italy as a whole indicator of what we might be see and what will things to come possibly it's a three way race we have the answer right in a candid a back by what will they mean. that we have the center left and then we have the five star movement the candidate backed by is hoping to push even further and ride on the wave that most of the in the league is talking about to show the left on the other hand start to see some first signs of recovery so they would hope not to win this election really but to get a bit of momentum and and see a trend of what are coming back the five star movement they're frightened they're very scared because the situation doesn't look good for them and the implications could be massive in broader terms on the political scene so in other words i mean
11:22 am
if we look at the national level for example you know not just talking about sardinia we have the far right lead party you know really seeming to gain ground whereas we have you know the populous the five star movement declining what do you think is the reason for that divergence because i mean they are both the ruling parties currently on the national level of sort of what's going on the league is doing extremely well because they they create and nurture fear there is fear about migrants and crime irrespective of the fact that if you look at the data immigration in italy is on a downward trend we let few when a few few people are arriving in italy displays little insurance and crime rates are down as well yet the public discourse is one of an invasion and crime this makes it easier also for most of the need to play the. law and order card so to speak and he has a very simple message to put across that he and he does so extremely well by going
11:23 am
on the spot whenever you have a crime he puts on a uniform police uniform and goes almost all the messages to send out these very simple only other and the five star movement is struggling with a number of problems one there is internal fighting they are arguing against each other within the party and this is coming out people are observing that to have to promote policies that are much more. two to sell you know we're talking about labor reform infrastructure they're not they don't they're not easy to come up with would have message and three the electorate of the voters behind the five star movement are very good surgeon as they want very different many different things and therefore some of them are bound to be appointed tell us a little bit about how you see sort of the dynamics in italy how we're seeing things play out there you talked about you know how how the parties really tapping into fear of the electorate we also have european elections coming up coming up in three months. and there we also see the projections the polls favoring far right
11:24 am
and populist parties and i'm curious if you agree and why you see those dynamics also shifting on the european law we do see those dynamics shifting on your own level because we actually are observing a realignment all european politics the traditional cleavage was one between left and right we and it was fundamentally storage lead over the last one hundred fifty years and economically which we're leaving that leaves behind and we're moving to a new political cleavage which is a cultural one where we see open progressive liberal forces versus closed nationalists some of the forces so there's a shift in terms of of where the battleground is what we'll also see is certainly a strengthening of sort of all become populist forces and you know a lot of people talk about that what i think is much more interesting what is what could happen on the other side there. how and to what extent the more open and progressive and liberal forces i'm talking about greens i'm talking about the liberals possibly about the monocle how they will manage to come together and work
11:25 am
together and create a common united open progressive front so we really have a battle for the soul of not only italy is it also europe really ahead of us. joining us expert on the sign in european politics at oxford university if you're shit thank you. well james bond's vehicle of choice to get out of a sticky situation is an aston martin of course but the iconic british car maker cannot escape brags that its c.e.o. now says that a british departure from the e.u. that a deal could be quote madness that would deal the company a major blow. past martin ranks among the most iconic british brands and is hoping to keep it that way it's building a brand new assembly plant next to a former royal air force base in wales a vote of confidence in the u.k. car industry amid the turmoil of breaks it may be but the luxury carmaker isn't ignoring the fact that the future for u.k. manufacturers remains uncertain. still have to believe that we'll get to
