after being raped and attacked by members of the clergy and venezuelan president nicolas maduro orders the closure of the country's border with brazil his aim is to block the delivery of humanitarian aid which he says is a cover for a u.s. invasion. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program activists in kenya. have been waiting anxiously for a ruling from the country's high court today on whether to decriminalize homosexuality but the court has deferred proceedings until may twenty fourth because of what the judge called a heavy case load the delay was met with dismay by some activists some calling it looks good across under the current law homosexual acts between men can be punished with long. terms discrimination against gay people is widespread in canada. our
1:02 pm
correspondent melanie card of all is following these developments outside of the courthouse in nairobi so you know melanie this was a decision which was really highly anticipated in the country why was the post poll . out the activists i have spoken to believe that the court might be stalling this is of course not but this judge has been saying he cited myanmar as challenges he gave the impression that they have really gone well with the amount of facts still left to be done for example joked about the kind of document which is taller than himself at the moment and also explains the two judges who are really on this case with him currently out of town this is no course a huge disappointment for so many people but hoping here today for a monumental decision to be taken which could potentially have a ripple effect across the region i met one of them and mary was telling me time

now repeal one sixty two could really change everything take. the. bus. just because. frankly. if it weren't for marion with three scuzz she would have a hard time guessing what she's been through mary identifies as a lesbian that is why her stepfather caused her out into the street when she was still a child that is why she was attacked by a group of men as a teenager and infected with a to be. poor all of them. in the. pool of my own.

thank you. both and then even to myself that's because they have done. work over just one zero zero zero. zero zero and then i'm so thankful the group who may cause someone ten years ago. sued the mom. has something. to give me. some christopher has given mary strength and pace and prejudice and dilute it criminalizes meringues very identity if in kenya it's not illegal to be gay but it is against the law to act on it in practice this means that in so many cases like that of mary as a beauty i.q. couples have had their relationships repressed by the state and given the widespread disapproval of homosexuality they face constant discrimination and the threat of violence in their community mission we did. we did. you cause they're bringing evil on the world god created adam and eve not adam and steve did

not accept the idea counted out and never learnt with that yes i behave yet they created selves. they are born like that i don't know i see it is i'm not it is again it's called. the hostility she's encountered hasn't broken very spirit. that ask yourself. a minute this is. who or what you need. to do cause a lot different in theirs and make me want to build a one love. love love i don't know what these hold would hold. mary hopes that soon she won't have to flee in prison for loving women and that one day in kenya she might be able to marry the woman.
1:06 pm
we. knew. and melanie you know we really see there in your piece the range of views on this issue talk with us a little bit more about the public perception of this particular case and kenya is there a public debate about the subject the topic is widely debated especially in the local media and in big cities like nairobi where we have large bt i.q. communities which have really been fighting to be seen as equal citizens for years now but of course we also have the rural parts of the country we're just still very traditional very conservative and where same sex intimacy is seen as something african many people there don't question a lot of which is basically a left over from the colonial era from the colonial rule rather than a truly african law and now we have these judges deciding whether or not to decriminalize same sex relations where could this possibly go melanie i mean do we
1:07 pm
have an indication as to how they might rule. anything could happen really the chances are fifty fifty but the activists i've spoken to our hope for their course asli optimistic because kenya has said precedent in the past for example last year a court here ruled that forced a no examinations which were used to determine whether a man engaged in sex are now illegal so there is hope and people like mary and the activists here they want to stop fighting until one day they are all seen as as equal citizens and can love whoever they choose to love. her deval joining us from nairobi thank you melanie. today is the second day of the vatican's four day summit aimed at tackling sexual abuse in the catholic church it has brought together bishops and vatican officials and experts and the heads of religious orders it's also allowed abuse victims to tell cardinals and officials directly about the

devastating impact abuses have on their lives many of the victims have suffered in silence others have seen firsthand efforts by the church to cover up sexual abuse but as one survivor says in this next report that culture could slow they be changing. was ten years old when his mother died of cancer it was nine hundred eighty six the boy was sent to a relative a catholic priest in a village and has said the clergyman became his foster father. was feeling try to create a comfortable sphere sitting on the sofa watching t.v. in the evenings by there were caresses leaning on each other and things at some point the next step a kiss. i really do love you a lot. more that was severely sexually abused for years he fled immediately after finishing school and went to university in munich but he soon began to suffer

from flashbacks of the trauma he confided in a friend of the family she confronted the priest and forced him to admit his crimes to the diocese the priest supervisor spoke to moderates and his friend he offered. and put him under pressure. from utah after he informed me that this conversation was never to have taken place he warned me not to take legal steps because he said in his experience when a person a paedophile goes to jail he'll still be a paedophile when he gets out so if it were just a matter of changing a person this would be a fully an appropriate step one of course because he would be stigmatized if he had gone to jail i did not want to ruin this person's life we're here would just leave . he could not forget about what happened about ten years later he confronted the church again with the crimes and again the priest kept his job millet's again spoke

with his supervisor without success last december move has turned to the church once again but this time something changed the diocese filed a complaint against the priest for. what changed was the perception and the listening to now they are really. sneering too and i'm not just half heartedly claiming they don't have time for example. doing listening change to. that is the bishop of limburg really spent two hours with me and i noticed he seemed affected by the discussion. of a tough night the judiciary also hopes to hold someone accountable not just the perpetrator but also his supervisor there may have been an obstruction of justice the statute of limitations has passed but the church too is investigating the case raising moffat's its hopes for the appeals summit in rome. i expect this summit to be the beginning of an ongoing process and for it not to be like now that we've

under the age of fifteen chelsea refutes the findings and will appeal. it's best well as political showdown looks set to take on a different tone this evening musicians from opposition sides are preparing on stage rival concerts near the country's border with colombia is part of a growing standoff between the opposition leader won by dome and president nicolas maduro earlier meadow close venezuela's border with brazil to prevent the delivery of humanitarian aid he says that the aid is a pretext for military action. tempers run high as soldiers and opus's supporters scuffled out a security checkpoint outside of caracas. would undergo a lot of my throat up. the lorries are part of an opposition convoy organized by self-proclaimed president juan kwaito to pick up
1:13 pm
a at the colombian border. along the colombian venezuelan border many people are crossing the frontier to pick up desperately needed supplies. they're hoping to see change soon. but most said he wouldn't we want to be free. we want to be able to cross the border more. we want freedom we want the government to fall it is what we own want elections so we can have a new president if i must and every. president nicolas maduro who is against letting any u.s. backed aid into the country saying it would be a forerunner to an invasion. he's rejected the existence of a humanitarian crisis in his country. this three hundred meter bridge crossing from venezuela into colombia has become the arena for the next showdown. on the
1:14 pm
colombian side british billionaire richard branson is organizing a concert to raise money for the opposition in response president maduro will hold his own concert on the opposite side of the bridge let's get more now we're joined by jennifer communal gonzales so jennifer tell us what does each side hope to achieve with the concerts on the border with colombia. well for richard branson side it's about raising funds raising awareness and supporting this push to bring aid to venezuela but for my guru it's to counter that he wants to counter this message he wants to say oh look i can also stage a concert i can also bring my people as well and to sort of battle was you say with public opinion as well but we haven't received a lot of details from the from the mother rose side about what this concert entails who's going to be in it and so but we have received a lot of information about the other concerts so it will be interesting to see both
1:15 pm
play out and just how the government tries to compete with it was there richard branson which is going to ransom consumers is going to be huge so i mean that's the situation on the border but let's talk about what's going on in the country itself because madonna is government has been preventing aid from entering the country it has shut the border with brazil as we know talked with us a little bit more about the current humanitarian situation in venezuela well situation is dire in particular with the with the situation of medicine shortage of medicines people don't have medicines all of the hospitals the public off the rails are collapsed people can't get basic things such as syringes and many many people say that when they have problems and they go to the hospital they have to bring their own medicines and that is kind of quite the critical issue in fact in sankey still a city that is near kuta a group of doctors got together to denounce the situation and say that they want the humanitarian aid to come in because this is very dire but it's also
1:16 pm
a shortage of food it is really really difficult for people right now so that is the question are people going to see why they were closing off the borders those aid and say no we want this aid and then rise up that is what a long way there was hoping how much support does he have quite oh. well international is a party has plenty venezuela of course with the opposition is. completely behind him and we know that some elements of the army some some higher these not so many high ranking officers have gone to him but some support has broken but the needle has really not pushed enough and so he really needs to build more support he needs that rather population but is difficult is that if you go because i army is still standing behind them and so we shall see what happens if that can change this weekend jennifer can you know gonzales thank you. well the italian island of sardinia goes to the polls on sunday in
1:17 pm
a closely watched racial election commentators believe that the poll will serve as an indicator of the growing popularity of italy's far right league party their leader and deputy prime minister matel salvini has been campaigning in sardinia and his. reports he's been stirring up resentment toward immigrants and other minorities. they celebrate him like a rock star i feel as though being italy's fall right into your ear minister is cranking up the i here in this small town square in sardinia i couldn't use only one flag one language one identity history culture i'm tradition about must survive. to be able to view the world in sharp rhetoric against migrants and praise the homeland. is not to back. lection sardinia is only a regional one italy's paul writes is flying high in nationwide
1:18 pm
a situation that so he now wants to exploit even if he's keeping a low profile in front of our camera not only if i should minister the link then though i'm minister of the interior and it's not my aim to become prime minister my business right now is public safety the mafia drugs i'm going to have this job and i want to keep doing it but only a few months into an easy government coalition between salvini sleek and the five star movement of luigi my you italy's far right senses a chance to govern alone belief has already overtaken its previously stronger coalition partner the pole. and the setting for this political battle is now the holiday island of sardinia here both camps are pitted against each other in the regional boat i for an entire week interior. minister much as been traveling around the islands to complain it shows just how important this region election here in
1:19 pm
sardinia has become it is a test of strength for the parties and an indicator that the entire country of italy is moving even further to the right at starting the second largest paper line we have outside of dania the elections are of course front page news. himself even paid a visit to the newsroom. a spare time i think salvini is just waiting for the european elections and if his party wins which is pretty likely then the time is right for him to pull out of the government she said specially since if the five star movement loses again they will be in a serious crisis with. his coffee saying i can use either morning or at a small market in the west of the island so the news media more supporters barack railing against migrants. for gavino mobutu who's been
1:20 pm
selling fruit and vegetables here for twenty years so he would be the ideal man for at least top job you know but i want him as prime minister he's the only one who nearly delivers the only one all the others and i'm nothing but he kept his promise . fishmonger salvator the monka also liked the speech. in the second he's doing so many things right he loves public order and the people love him look around everything's going smoothly in the market here today at the end of the event as usual but he also being asked the audience to join him on stage the selfie with italy's most popular politician and if there was just office followers come through the next prime minister. of denmark that's now we're joined here in the studio by my tail got involved he is an expert on italian and european politics at oxford university well the. program how important do you see sunday's
1:21 pm
election in sardinia for italy as a whole your indicator of what we might be see and what of things to come possibly it's a three way writes we have the time to write in a candid a back by those of any. but we have the center left and then we have the five star movement the candidate backed by those of the evening is hoping to. push even further and ride on the wave that most of it in the league is about to show the left on the other hand start to see some first signs of recovery so they would hope not to win this election really but to get a bit of momentum and and see a trend of what are coming back the five star movement they're frightened they're very scared because the situation doesn't look good for them and the implications could be massive in broader terms on the political scene so in other words i mean if we look at the national level for example you know not just talking about sardinia we have the far right lead party you know really seeming to gain ground
1:22 pm
whereas we have you know the populous the five star movement declining what do you think is the reason for that divergence because i mean they are both the ruling parties currently on the national level absolute what's going on the league is doing extremely well because they they create and nurture fear there is fear about migrants and crime here especially of the fact that if you look at the data immigration in italy is on a downward trend we let few when few few people are arriving in italy does a little insurance and crime rates are down as well yet the public discourse is one of an invasion and crime this makes it easier also for most of the need to play the . law and order card so to speak and he has a very simple message to put across that he and he and he does so extremely well by going on the spot whenever you have a crime he puts on a uniform police uniform and goes on the spot the messages to send out these very simple only and the movement is struggling with
1:23 pm
a number of problems there's internal fighting they are arguing against each other we did the party and this is coming out people are observing that too they have to promote policies that are much more. two to sell you know we're talking about labor reform infrastructure they're not they don't they're not easy to to come up with with a message and three electorate all of the voters behind the five star movement are very it's regina's they want very different many different things and therefore some of them are bound to be appointed to tell us a little bit about how you see sort of the dynamics in italy how we're seeing things play out there you talked about you know how how the parties really tapping into fear of the electorate we also have european elections coming up coming up in three months. and there we also see the projections the polls are favoring far right and populist parties and i'm curious if you agree and why you see those dynamics also shifting on the european level we do see those dynamic shifting on your part of all because we actually are observing
1:24 pm
a realignment all your compulsives to traditional cleavage was one between left and right we and it was fundamentally starkly over the last one hundred fifty years and economically that we're leaving that behind and we're moving to a new political cleavage which is a cultural one where we see open progressive liberal forces versus closed nationalist some of the forces so there's a shift in terms of where the battleground is what we'll also see is certainly a strengthening of become populist forces you know a lot of people talk about that i think is much more interesting what is what could happen on the other side there. how and to what extent more open and progressive and liberal forces i'm talking about greens i'm talking about the liberals possibly about the monocle how they will manage to come together work together and create a common united open progressive front so we really have a battle for the soul of not only italy's and also europe really ahead of us.

assessment is carried out. so we are in the sr says these studies are not done in a day they take months and sometimes years to do this is about ensuring that projects are done well what we see here is an example of trying to move quickly by overstepping procedures and we can see the consequences. we are some schools are going to. display the new refinery won't be the quick fix the president of hoped and workers of the site into a left hanging. israel is on its way to become the only only the fourth nation to achieve a controlled landing on the moon the barest sheet on manned spacecraft was launched into orbit by a rocket if not a space station in florida thursday night because really robotic lander is scheduled to land on the moon after a journey of six point five million kilometers. and with that now you're up to date
