pope francis outlining new steps to stop the sexual abuse of children in the catholic church the move comes as a summit in drone p.r.'s how a testimony from survivors of rape and assault by members of the clergy and one woman in kenya tells us what it is like to be a lesbian and a country where persecution and hatred of homosexuals is right kenya's high court is postponing a highly awaited decision on criminalizing gay sex. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program we begin in venezuela where the battle between the country's rival leaders as about to spill over into a battle of the bands groups from the opposing camps are set to play rival concerts . a colombian city on the border with about a swell of british billionaire richard branson is backing the opposition concert

people have begun streaming into the venue a quarter of a million are expected branson is hoping to raise one hundred million dollars for food and medical. aid and the other concert is being planned by venice famous embattled president nicolas maduro earlier my dodo closed venezuela's border with brazil to prevent the delivery of humanitarian aid and he says the aid is a pretext for military action. tempers run high as soldiers and opposition supporters scuffled out a security checkpoint outside of caracas. would be under my coat up. the lorries are part of an opposition convoy organized by self-proclaimed president juan wedo to pick up aid at the colombian border. along the colombian venezuelan border many people are crossing the frontier to pick

up desperately needed supplies. there hoping to see change soon. but most said he wouldn't we want to be free. we want to be able to cross the border more. we want freedom we want the government to fall i got it is what we all want in elections so we can have a new president it promised on every level i see and they will see a look at the president nicolas maduro who is against letting any u.s. backed aid into the country saying it would be a forerunner to an invasion. he's rejected the existence of a humanitarian crisis in his country. this three hundred meter bridge crossing from venezuela into colombia has become the arena for the next showdown. on the colombian side british billionaire richard branson is organizing a concert to raise money for the opposition in response president maduro will hold

his own concert on the opposite side of the bridge. let's get more now we're joined by jennifer can you know gonzales so jennifer tell us what does each side hope to achieve with the concerts on the border with colombia. well for richard branson side it's about raising funds raising awareness and supporting this push to bring aid to venezuela but for my guru it's to counter that he wants to counter this message he wants to say oh look i can also stage a concert i can also bring my people as well and to sort of battle with you say with public opinion as well but we haven't received a lot of details from the from the mother rose side about what this concert entails who's going to be in it and so but we have received a lot of information about the other concerts so it will be interesting to see both play out and just how the government tries to compete with it was there richard branson. and consumers is going to be huge so i mean that's the situation on the
2:05 pm
border but let's talk about what's going on in the country itself because madonna is government has been preventing aid from entering the country it has shut the border with brazil as we know talked with us a little bit more about the current humanitarian situation in venezuela. well the situation is dire in particular with the with the situation of medicine a shortage of medicines people don't have medicines all of the hospitals are public obstacles are collapsed people can't get basic things such as syringes and many many people say that when they have problems and they go to the hospital they have to bring their own medicines and that is kind of quite the critical issue in fact in sankey stole a city that is near kuta a group of doctors got together to denounce the situation and say that they want the humanitarian aid to come in because there's it's very dire but it's also a shortage of food it is really really difficult for people right now so that is the question are people going to see why they were closing off the borders those

aid and say no we want this aid and then rise up that is what a long way there was hoping how much support does he have quite oh well international is a party has plenty in venezuela of course what the opposition is devastation is completely behind him and we know that some elements of the army some some higher in these not so many higher ranking officers have gone to him but some support has broken but the needle has really now pushed enough and so he really needs to build more support he needs that rather population but it's difficult is it a go because my army is still standing behind them and so we shall see what happens if that can change this weekend jennifer communal gonzales thank you. today is the second day of the vatican's four day summit aimed at tackling the sexual abuse in the catholic church it has brought together bishops that can officials experts and the heads of religious orders it's also allowed abuse victims to tell cardinals and
2:07 pm
officials directly about the devastating effects of the abuse has had on their lives too many victims have suffered in silence others have seen first hand efforts by the church to cover up sexual abuse in just a moment we'll speak with our correspondent at the vatican but first we hear from one survivor who is hopeful that the church can change its ways. well actually i've just been informed that we're going directly to our correspondent martin who is standing by for us at the vatican in rome and martin you know you have really seen firsthand some of these stories because you've been talking to the survivors of clerical of abuse how have they reacted to the pope francis's twenty one point plan to combat sexual abuse. well i mean obviously the victim voices such you know do you vocally i mean there are many many people in the victim's side that are talking in you know there are
2:08 pm
people that had been very critical of this twenty to one point essentially saying that this is pretty much more talk but there is a recoiling from what originally was going to be a syria tolerance approach of sexual abuse then there are other people including groups from chile lived was actually very significant figure among victims with whom we talked today who pointed out that in fact there are major changes and major steps are being taken so things are viscerally different you know there is no agreement what is quite clear is that the church does see this as an immediate priority and something that has to be taken care of right right away what are you hearing from the survivors there martin what do they want the vatican to do. today we actually a you actually heard of particularly interesting claim we'd sure which was from from one got a cruise which was like well i really just don't want to talk about my story
2:09 pm
anymore he said i'm just not really willing to retell the story it kind of upsets me to have to do it you know and to some degree it's now time for the church to actually concretely take the steps and stop asking victims to tell the story it was really quite enlightening it was quite sobering because i think in the media we very often take the position that what we need he suggests farther sort of space for victims to sort of tell their plight and i think that in some way where at least many of the people that are sort of here including the ones that criticise his twenty one points from the pope yesterday are saying enough talk i mean we want no concrete actions. and against that backdrop i mean we have to acknowledge what the message is that is coming due out in the vatican because we've had a leading cardinal and knowledge of the widespread abuse of children in the roman catholic church walk us through what he had to say martin. i
2:10 pm
mean we have several several expressions over the last two days of the sense that the church has not been paying sufficient or clear enough attention and they are the months a century for the church to take this very seriously you know we just heard actually cardinal o'malley coming from boston who was sitting at the briefing only ten minutes ago i mean actually that the briefing is still going on essentially saying that as far as he's concerned particularly coming across from the american church which has had somewhere in there of hundred thousand victims calculated so far this is actually something of the utmost absolute priority in the so matter of fact the church just not being serious enough in tackling the problem now. no one can oh yes lee agree with this and it is certainly a few burdens that cardinals and bishops are saying this. but in some sense i think it's true that this feels a little bit too late i mean that conversation just being had we have police and
2:11 pm
and heard from victims for twenty years the question now always very is specifically what will be the policy that the church will institute and they must say that over the last forty eight hours or a day and a half actually we have no dream we heard anything very concrete other than the rehashing of certain points that were already in place for the last few years and it's a critical time for the church the pressure really on martin jack illustrating what is happening there behind you at the vatican thank you. don't get a quick check of some other stories making news around the world a powerful earthquake has hit ecuador around two hundred twenty kilometers from. on the peru ecuador border eyewitnesses say that a seven point five magnitude quake shook the surrounding area but there are no initial reports of casualties or damage officials also will doubt a tsunami warning warning. india says that it is building downs to stop its shares

jail terms discrimination against gay people is widespread and jenkins our correspondent melanie card of all is following these developments outside of the courthouse in nairobi so you know melanie this was a decision which was really highly anticipated in the country why was it postponed . well the activists i have spoken to believe that the court might be stalling is of course not but the judge has been saying he cited myanmar as challenging as he gave the impression that they have really got on well with the amount facts still left to be done for example joked about the height of the document but just one of them himself at the moment and also explains the two judges who are really on this case with him i can't be out of town but this is of course a huge disappointment for so many people but hoping here today for a monumental decision to be taken which could potentially have

you. and melanie you know we really see there in your piece the range of views on this issue talk with us a little bit more about the public perception of this particular case in kenya is there a public debate about the subject the topic is widely debated especially in the local media and in big cities like nairobi where we have large to bt i.q. communities which have really been fighting to be seen as equal citizens for years now but of course we also have the rural parts of the country which are still very traditional very conservative and where same sex intimacy is seen as something an african many people there don't question a lot of which is basically a left over from the colonial era from the colonial rule rather than a truly african law and now we have these judges deciding whether or not to decriminalize same sex relations where could this possibly go melanie i mean do we

have an indication as to how they might rule. anything could happen really the chances are fifty fifty but the activists i've spoken to are hopeful that cautiously optimistic because kenya has set precedents in the pot trade sample last year a court ruled that fullest anal examinations which were used to determine whether a man engaged in sex and now illegal so there is hope and people like mary and the activists here they won't stop fighting until one day they all seen this as equal citizens and can love whoever they choose to love melanie tard to ball joining us from nairobi thank you melanie. italian island of sardinia goes to the polls on sunday in a closely watched regional election commentators believe that the poll will serve as an indicator of the growing popularity of italy's far right league party their

minister of the interior and it's not my aim to become prime minister my business right now is public safety the mafia drugs. i want to have this job and i want to keep doing it but only a few months into an easy government coalition between salvini sleek and the five star movement of luigi my you italy's far right senses a chance to govern alone belief has already overtaken its previously stronger coalition partner the pole. and the setting for this political battle is now the holiday island of sardinia here both camps are pitted against each other in the regional boat. for an entire week interior minister much as been travelling around the islands to complain it shows just how important this region election here in sardinia has become it is a test of strength for the parties and an indicator that the entire country of

a candidate backed by those of any. that we have the center left and then we have the five star movement the candidate backed by those so the me is hoping to push even further and ride on the wave that mantle civilian the leakey's is taken to the hospital the left on the other hand starts to see some first signs of recovery so they would hope not to win this election really but to get a bit of momentum and and see a trend of what are coming back the five star movement they're frightening they're very scared because the situation doesn't look good for them and the implications could be massive in broader terms on the political scene so in other words i mean if we look at the national level for example you know not just talking about sardinia we have the far right lead party you know really seeming to gain ground whereas we have you know the populous the five star movement declining what do you think is the reason for that divergence because i mean they are both the ruling parties currently on the national level of sort of what's going on the league is

doing extremely well because they they create and nurture fear there is fear about migrants and crime here especially of the fact that if you look at the data immigration in italy is on a downward trend where let few when a few few people are arriving in italy do say as little insurance and crime rates are down as well yet the public discourse is one of an invasion and crime this makes it easier also for most of the need to play the. law and order card so to speak and he has a very simple message to put across that he and he and he does so extremely well by going on the spot whenever you have a crime he puts on a uniform a police uniform and goes on the spot the messages and out these very simple only other parts of movement is struggling with a number of problems there's internal fighting they are arguing against each other within the party and this is coming out people are observing that too they have to

promote policies that are much more. two to sell you know we're talking about labor reform infrastructure they're not they don't they're not easy to to come up with would have a message and three the electorate of the voters behind a five star movement a very good surgeon as they want very different many different things and therefore some of them are about to be appointed to tell us a little bit about how you see sort of the dynamics in italy how we're seeing things play out there you talked about you know how how the parties really tapping into fear of the electorate we also have european elections coming up coming up in three months. and there we also see the projections the polls are favoring far right populist parties and i'm curious if you agree and why you see those dynamics also shifting on the european law we do see those dynamics shifting on your personal because we actually are observing a realignment all european polls do traditional cleavage was one between left and right we and it was fundamentally starfleet over the last one hundred fifty years
2:26 pm
an economically which we're leaving behind and we're moving to a new political cleavage which is a cultural one where we see open progressive liberal forces versus closed national it's sort of forces so there's a shift in terms of where the battleground is what we'll also see is certainly a strengthening of become populous forces and you know a lot of people talk about that but i think it's much more interesting what is what could happen on the other side there. how and to what extent more open and progressive and liberal forces i'm talking about greens i'm talking about the liberals possibly about the monocle how they will manage to come together work together and create a common united open progressive front so we really have a battle for the soul of not only italy's and also europe really ahead of us. joining us expert on this high and european politics at oxford university thank you . you're watching t.v. news coming up next indeed have you news asia the saudi crown prince brings his
