3:02 pm
bring to justice whosoever has committed such crimes. the church will never seek to hush up on not take seriously any case but let's go now to our religious affairs correspondent in rome not in the pope has promised decisive action against abuse what's your reaction to his speech today. oh this speech was given at the end of the first day. in which workshops and papers were presented and one has to keep in mind that this was a speech given a pronouncer pronouncement given to the church it was not intended for the general public however it was very telling that the general public including victims were allowed to listen on on his words what's remarkable about this speech is that for a pope that has generally been accused so far good words and gestures but not sufficient actions and this is the first time at least in my experience that i see
3:03 pm
a pope turn on he saw in church and accused him of seriously seriously you know brutal crimes including not only sexual abuse not only a cover up but the use of child pornography the hosting of practices that essentially have no longer only endangered but how about truly made deeper the promise of sexual abuse in the church this was truly remarkable to the extent that it actually snow longer than listening to victims it's no longer apologizing but he sexually pointing the finger there regularly at the institution. that is pretty extraordinary to hear from the pope and he's talking about bringing these perpetrators to justice does this mean the church will start now handing over suspected pedophile see the secular authorities. this is actually a very good question and i think that this is one of the biggest concerns of
3:04 pm
victims and victims' associations it is not clear from the words that the pope essentially pronounced that there are any concrete polisi or protocols in place to essentially move either evidence or accused priests to justice systems nonetheless the fact is the statement was actually a massive sea change so far the church has been talking about since we know the church is no longer talking about sex the sexual abuse of sins but it's crimes and actually making the promise of turning essentially bringing justice or turning perpetrators to justice the question no it's about establishing protocols and policies and we can only assume that if this works were actually on this from the pope that the machine is now in movement to try to actually produce appropriate policies not religious affairs correspondent for us in rome thank you so much. and we're joined now by father max cabot bianca the catholic chaplain for students

across the university is in berlin also worked at the vatican for ten years the former. us someone who as we said you spent a lot of time in the vatican. why do you think it took so long for the church to face up to what happened is these were crimes that were committed not just sins i mean child abuse sexual abuse is a crime no matter who commits it of course you know i saw the speech today live on the internet and when i saw all these bishops who are really the leaders of the church i realize also thinking of my time in in the vatican how slow this big institution is about to change and it's like an elephant you know who has to dance now and and what's what i felt today is that the pope really now is shaking the people and and pointing out that in the midst of everything has to have to be the victims and and they came from from all over the world and the situation is very
3:06 pm
different in different parts of the world and he stressed in the beginning of his speech and for me it was really impressive to see how serious he spoke so do you think it was a good thing that the pope said what he said about bringing people to justice. yes you know i mean if you checked also the reactions in internet afterwards and i've seen many criticisms against him his and oh he's not getting concrete he's not taking measures you know but then i was really specially from organizations for victims who said that's really a bad speech but then i was thinking are they right i think from their point of view yes because in fact he didn't say anything of concrete but what he did is really. pointing out the principles that no longer silence no longer covering no longer double life no longer of these things and
3:07 pm
that's something why i would say yes if it was good that he did it in this way and briefly if you can we have heard some horror stories from victims in the past few days you are a catholic priest how does it feel now to be associated with an institution that has caused a lot of pain to a lot of these people. you know it's really hard because you know first of all i'm a priest and i want to be. i want to feel the the pain of the victims that's my first thing but we also we have pain and the pope also said that he that so many priests were doing a good work are really scandalized by that and he and he acknowledged that and thanked the people the normal people who know they could shop and send it was also good for us to be a little bit yeah consoled because you know everybody industry friend you are going
