a libya coleman we'll talk to our resident film critic about all the main winners also coming up. president trump delays footings new tower of some chinese imports he says progress is being made a new trade talks with beijing in that there could be quote very big news in the next few weeks. and the arab league and european union leaders meeting for their first ever joint summit forty nine heads of state government are in the egyptian resort resort of sharm el sheikh talking politics and each will cooperate. and pope francis says the church will make protecting children from sexual abuse by priests and spies for r.t. this after a landmark summit on child abuse but victims say the promises are not enough.
7:02 am
i'm brian thomas thanks so much for being with us this year's academy awards have just been handed out in an event full of surprises and upsets the segregation era roadtrip movie green book won the oscar for best picture beating roma which had been favored going into the ceremony livia coleman took the best actress award for her role in the favorite besting glenn close who was considered the front runner and a romney moloch was the best actor award for his role as queen front man freddie mercury and bohemian rhapsody which also took most of the words in total with for us. ok our resident film expert scott roxboro here as ever good morning good to see if the scott you know looking at these these oscars and a host of events something highly unusual there were some real surprises the green book was certainly one of them yeah no i i thought the book could win i sort of
7:03 am
hoped it would be not a bad film not sure if you see that but it's it's how i know it i think of it as driving miss daisy in reverse it's a bit of a throwback movie it's a story of a. black musician who teams up with a white racist played by beagle morris and his driver. who they say is a gibson is south of the one nine hundred sixty s. for me it was a very sort of conventional type of film to give the oscars a say in a lot of work very much a safe bet and that surprised me because this oscars looked like it was going to be quite radically different not just because it was host list but because of the sort of diversity of nominees and the kinds of movies i mean we mentioned the favorite robot romas a three and a half hour black and white mexican film and most people myself included thought it could win best picture which would have been revolutionary in the end we did have a revolution we had a bit of more of the same the old playbook more or less more or less there were a couple of. prizes to
7:04 am
a couple of films i mean interestingly this year no one film slept so you had an oscar here for all of you coleman for incredible role in the favor you got an oscar for blood a spike lee thank goodness finally spike lee gets an oscar but i still wasn't happy he was there piecing it you know that he also he won for best of best adapted screenplay for black klansmen not for best director which would have sort of been suitable given his stature in cinema. as i say it was in the end. for me of an oscar of half measures and oscar of. putting on a good show perhaps but not really of making sort of the radical changes or really breaking with tradition which is what i expected going in ok talking about radical changes diversity is certainly very important for these oscars that the academy meet the challenge yeah i mean this goes back a few years ago you might remember there was oscar so why controversy when there were no non white actors or actresses nominated two thousand fifteen that happened
7:05 am
and a controversy built and they said we have to diversify the academy it's too old it's too white it's too male and a bunch of new members new members which they didn't they they boosted the membership to six thousand to nine thousand adding mainly women i think minorities and non americans that seemed to have an effect this year in terms of the nominees we had black panther nominated for a bunch of oscars we had black klansman nominated we had films like the favorite which is quite bizarre but a credibly powerful strange film by a greek director living in england we had roma for language film set in mexico that's very inspired by sort of italian films of the one nine hundred forty s. and fifty's so you had this quite sort of radical change happening and it seemed to be happening but then when it comes to the final awards particularly the best picture award goes to a film that could have made twenty years ago in my opinion yeah i think driving miss daisy in really. he says it is
7:06 am
a very great way to describe the film greenberg we look at all the efforts to to make the economy more and more relevant we're looking at last year saw a record low viewership is this a step in the right direction to increase the kind of rewards appeal yeah i think it's difficult i think what they have done right here is they picked a lot of very big popular movies also for best picture a black panther nominated stars one one my favorite films the last year was nominated and bohemian rhapsody which i wasn't too fond of but it was a hugely popular movie so these are three big studio movies that a lot of people have seen a lot of problems with the oscars last few years as a lot of films have been nominated and have won were very nice films that very few people have seen at the least in this case a lot of the films that were nominated people knew about i'm not sure if that's going to help though when it comes to viewership the oscar still is an old structure it's three hours and plus long it's a lot of sort of quite dull television i think they probably have to make
7:07 am
a lot of more radical changes if they really want to shake things up and really want to get people back watching again ok well what might be some radical changes which shorten it three and i have reason to last as long as it is you know he watches three half hours of television anymore on a ship shortened they may try to make some changes this year have some the minor awards put on commercial breaks huge uproar against that and so they would switch back and maybe make it possible for some more popular movies to win the the idea of nominating a black panther was great i would have loved to see actually black panther win best picture i think that would have been a radical move as well and the fact that everyone watching would have actually seen the movie and know and had an opinion about it that would've been a great change as it is a lot of the time the oscars keeps trying to make these changes but they're only sent had to be half steps and they don't really go far enough either to be sure sort of appealing to your sin of sin the ass. like nominating or giving roma the
7:08 am
top prize or to appeal to the average film fan and give it to a really big popular movie like life and i would think you know really well it's not it's all or that people ordinary people watching will have seen i think they should really choose a path they want to be popular they want to be silly ass stick but not try to always be everything to all people and end up being really nothing to nobody ok scott thanks very much for coming in this morning and. now other news that an emergency summit on the crisis in venezuela set to take place in colombia to opposition leader wanted why don't will be holding talks with the u.s. vice president mike pence on the sidelines meeting united states has vowed to seek other ways of getting aid into venezuela after pro-government troops blocked trucks carrying food medicines at the border over the weekend those d.w. reports the closure of that border is having a devastating effect. the part of the market at the colombian venezuelan

border it's where venezuelans go to purchase basic goods from colombia the closure of the border is bad for business on a regular sunday whole safina motto which sells ninety five kilos of potatoes today she only sold five made me and well they were all still the produce from wednesday and we don't know if we can invest again gab and maybe if they open the border in some but they say it will stay closed we're wondering where to go now to help our struggling families in venezuela it's really tough if the border remains closed she will lose everything. then up to the minute the sea i guess i'm over already lost a lot of our projects and look how many tomatoes we have last they only last two days or a day with this son he want we have to work like this on the sun damage is the peppers the potatoes the carrots. carlos says to put on the market is the only option for thousands of venezuelans vote if they close the

border for two days we suffer though you know why because our customers they are not from colombia they don't come from kuta or pump lono work or on our go summers are the venezuelan people there barbara not going to not go back to another market trader list kano was wounded in the weekend clashes at the border. said ok we live on the border and because of his clothes that there are no sales no customers but it affects us a lot of faith that. nobody knows when the border will reopen meaning more hardship for traders and their customers on the other side. now to some other stories making the news at this hour bangladeshi security forces have killed a man who attempted to hijack a plane flying from dhaka to dubai a flight made an emergency landing in the city of chittagong hijacker died after exchanging gunfire with commandos and when else was injured. british prime minister
7:11 am
theresa may has delayed of final parliamentary vote on it until march the twelfth just over two weeks before britain scheduled to leave the deal a vote was scheduled for next wednesday they will travel to brussels again tomorrow tuesday to hold more talks with e.u. leaders. around me has been held in moscow in memory memory of the assassinated russian opposition leader boris numb solved thousands of demonstrators marching through the streets demanding reforms and software was shot four years ago as he crossed the bridge near the kremlin. all asian markets have been rallying after president trump said he's delaying a tariff on chinese imports on twitter the president said both sides have made quote substantial progress in trade talks the world's two biggest economies have been locked in a trade dispute for months with the u.s.
7:12 am
accusing beijing of intellectual property theft and of limiting american access to its markets the new tariff increase was set to come into force on march the first speaking shortly after his twitter announcement the president said he was looking forward to reaching a trade deal with china we just left a big meeting with china and we just put out a statement that we're doing very well with china it was a long weekend they decided to stay for two and a half more days they'll probably be leaving late tonight they're going back and of all works well we're going to have some very big news over the next week or two and it's really been terrific i tell you that whole relationship has been outstanding we've put ourselves into a position of strength for the first time in about. thirty five years or probably a lot more than that but china's been terrific we want to make a deal that's great for both countries and that's really what we're going to be doing. ok joining us on the studios clifford tonight he spent fifteen years in
7:13 am
china joins us from d.w. business morning clifford could we be seeing soon a new trade deal between the world's two biggest economies do we have any timeline for this. we don't have a timeline as such but i think we i think things are looking very positive. because i think both sides need a big political win so they're very keen for to happen whatever about the substance of the deal of course that's going to be the big question so i think they're going to make it happen they're going to try to make it happen around the time i know how most of the mar-a lago meeting with that with xi jinping traveling again to trump's home base there so i think it will probably be built around ok do we have any you said there could be some key pieces to this that we're still waiting to find out about any inklings of what they may be well i think i think they will want to do is try to be forced to buy cultural products beans soybeans for example things that
7:14 am
will affect u.s. farmers you know which are also good for the headlines of the political capital i think on key areas they're still very far apart basically donald trump wants china to behave like a regular market economy but china isn't a regular market economy so there's a little communist command caricom is basically and obviously with chinese characteristics as they say but it's still very much still very much on its own terms ok important for america as well as some protection of intellectual property that's everything from disney to books to films where we see any any progress there i think we will see some cosmetic advances but a lot of it is how american companies for example have to act in the u.s. corps is there in chinese courts which are still still tend to favor chinese firms so i think there's going to be a few areas where it be very difficult to find agreement ok so these discussions are actually touching on chinese law and how the court procedure. are conducted
7:15 am
that certainly is far reaching in terms of what negotiators are up against if you have these talks fit in with with a wall way and you know the five g. technology and what the future holds could there be some agreement in and something that has connections to state security and issues like that you know what weighs in pretty central to this i think he said that he said that he will revisit the case of among one joe the c.f.o. of ways in. waging possible extradition to the u.s. so obviously this is a big bear between the two countries so i've funny feeling that he will possibly try and politicized which is obviously has ramifications for the rule of law but it's huawei on the security concerns there a lot of people have been are worried that it could use it could compromise u.s.
7:16 am
security but it could be that there's a softer approach now to walk away which which would be interesting in itself a brief if you could how these talks fit in with the north korean summit that's coming up in a few days well i think there's a big political element to this and you know if you store as a what looks like a win on the trade talks it would dovetail very nicely with the with the when with king kim jong il in in hanoi so i think they're there but they're very linked in terms of how the big picture looks ok clifford thanks so much for that clifford unit from the business desk well just a few hours from now president trump will be boarding a plane to vietnam as we just heard to and where will be holding his second historic meeting with north korean leader kim jong un later this week now kim is already on route to annoy on board his official train trump is hoping the choice of venue can serve as an inspiration to cam to nuclearize so he can open up his country to economic development. i know why is

a capital city transformed its bustling streets a stark contrast to its past. in its recent history vietnam has had a lot in common with north korea it's also a communist state ruled with an iron fist it's one party regime reinforced by propaganda and personality cults. in the past it's seen open hostility to western culture and influence. it's been isolated and an international pariah. but since ninety six vietnam has taken a different path with reforms have opened it up to foreign business in a remarkable turnaround it's gone from basket case to one of asia's fastest growing economies perhaps vietnam style change is a good fit for north korea. vietnam starting point before the reform is similar to north korea's now. when there were

many things that had to be changed fundamentally. when you switch from a centralized economy to a market economy the important thing is to have a broad and far vision and reform for really and completely we've had to pay. the announce reforms have seen its per capita income soar almost five fold but hanoi hasn't traded prosperity for to mock recy here the communist party remains firmly in power keeping a tight lid on free speech and political dissent. but it hasn't come without social transformation the sight of skateboarders in front of lenin statue and no i would have been impossible not long ago. compare that to today's chung yang where public life is carefully controlled and north korean leaders are still revered as deities. vietnam has rebuilt ties
