shows that german weapons are being used by militia groups in yemen civil war this despite claims by the german government of weapon sales in the middle east are strictly controlled. plus incumbents of mohamedou bihari has clerics is declared the winner in nigeria's presidential election that's after a troubled but with allegations from widespread and regular times. hello i'm terry martin good to have you with us we begin in the vietnamese capital hanoi where u.s. president donald trump and north korean leader kim jong un are just hours away from kicking off their second summit in less than a year but leaders are expected to have a brief one on one meeting later tonight donald trump began the day with talks with vietnamese president new. the two countries signed off on

a number of trade deals and trump once again held up the u.s. relationship with vietnam as an example for north korea. is pushing pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons program in exchange for economic development the talks in vietnam come eight months after a historic summit in singapore the first between the u.s. a sitting u.s. president and a north korean leader and. washington has set only modest expectations for this summit hinting only that it could loosen sanctions on yank takes further steps to dismantle its nuclear arsenal nonetheless trump is building up the meeting he tweeted bit of his thriving like few places on earth north korea would be the same and very quickly it would denuclearize essential is also a great opportunity like none other in history almost not out there in history for my friend kim jong il and we will know fairly soon very interesting it's.
8:03 am
on the w. correspondent boston is in hanoi and joins us now from there so trump in kim will be meeting face to face today for a second time what can we expect us down. well i think this meeting today is more of a social meeting and they have a twenty minute conversation one on one and then it will be a dinner here a the metropole hotel in hanoi and i think that's an opportunity for both leaders to get to know each other better to deepen and enhance their personal relationships because they only met once before face to face and that was at that summit in singapore and there they didn't spend that much time together they didn't have that much of an opportunity to actually get to know each other so here in hanoi they're allowing more time for that hence i think that dinner tonight and president trump made it clear that he seems to be very interested in
8:04 am
a close personal relationship with north korean leader kim jong un at least in his tweet this morning he called kim jong un his friend terry so the summit is being held there in hanoi what role is be playing in these talks. but vietnam has been time and again portrayed as a potential development model for north korea that's also what president trump outlined in his tweet saying that north korea look if you give up your nuclear weapons then you could go down a similar development path as vietnam has and that path actually is quite impressive because vietnam has evolved from an impoverished war stricken country to one of the one of the most vibrant economies in all of asia and that is a model that north korea has been interested in for quite some time looking if that's something that they might want to emulate or if that's something that's suitable for north korea and i had a look around here in vietnam to see where the countries at after some thirty years

of economic reforms have a look at this report. every few weeks when checks on her life stop cricket. in two thousand and sixteen she co-founded the startup company cricket one north of vietnam's economic capital holcim in siri she recruits local farmers like latrell hare to raise the crickets for her business easy to produce and high in protein cricket one sells powder made from these insects as a sustainable food source around the world. when took advantage of the anime's government's push to promote innovative startups like hers in the past three years we had a lot of like a cell phone and helpful start up event talking nice to attract capital and also to attract like. ministers and even the prime minister make a lot of stayman focusing on start up and innovation and entrepreneurship and then

they do things. like innovation and entrepreneurship attune to to make the country bet. with her company she also helps improve the livelihoods of farmers like literally before he made a meager living off growing black pepper and rubber now with the crickets his income has triple a farmer for some thirty years literally experienced first hand the economic changes vietnam has gone through. living standards of farmers used to be very low here now the country has opened up and people are encouraged to do business freely but we don't know where to start thanks to these new companies i can now engage in new activities this business has transformed my life. thanks to its rigorous economic reform policies the nominally communist vietnam is today one of the fastest growing economies in

asia. a feat that north korea seems to be intrigued by. they don't one is a former economic advisor to the vietnamese government he has been in close contact with delegations from north korea. vietnam to implement business to develop the private sector to fight into nature the question. of how vietnam. normalized every nation to washington and the. market economy. the civilized political leadership in vietnam vietnam has managed to liberalize its economy while keeping a tight grip on political freedoms. was something my corrie knows all too well. her criticism of the government and her political activism have landed

the singer in hot water with the authorities time and time again. not. open. if someone. about. paul that is they will stop it from the beginning since two thousand sit in on two now is nearly two hundred people have been arrested and. rapid economic growth and a strict control of civil liberties it is this development model that north korean leader kim jong un could be looking closely at during his visit to vietnam.
8:09 am
and were still with our correspondent in hanoi bastion the first summit that was held in singapore between trump and. it was long on symbolism but short on any concrete commitments to actually denuclearize the korean peninsula. is more pressure this time to deliver a deal of substance. absolutely terry so as you said the agreement that the two reached in singapore was extremely vague so yes there are expectations from many sides saying look this time around we're looking for something a bit more concrete for example that could be a road map detailing steps in spelling out steps when it comes to denuclearization how to follow that path and that could be used to hold leaders accountable also and i couldn't gauge the progress because if you look at what happened since
8:10 am
the last summit in singapore there wasn't much there wasn't much progress in terms of the denuclearization there are on the contrary there are reports saying that north korea has pushed forward with its nuclear program and it has even has even increased its nuclear stockpile terry bussin thank you so much a correspondent in hanoi. now i got some breaking news this hour pakistan says it has shot down two indian air force jets after they crossed the disputed border in kashmir an army spokesman also say. that one of the pilots has been captured an indian official earlier said an indian air force plane crashed in indian controlled kashmir and local media are also accusing pakistani combat jets of entering indian airspace in kashmir
8:11 am
india launched air strikes it claimed targeted the josh homme a terror group in pakistani territory on tuesday tensions between the two nuclear powers have been escalating since a suicide attack on indian troops in kashmir two weeks ago. of course we'll keep you updated on any other developments in that developing story well let's move on to yemen right now though and the weapons used to wage war there the four year conflict has created the world's worst humanitarian crisis the german government has repeatedly denied any knowledge of german arms and technology being involved in that war but an exclusive investigation by a team of german media outlets including d w news suggests those weapons are being used in yemen here's a rip. in yemen's brutal war it's the civilians who have bearing the brunt thousands have died millions on the brink of starvation i think the dominant falls
8:12 am
has been the saudi coalition the fact that it keeps bombing civilians and civilian infrastructure despite having the best weaponry money can buy. in saudi arabia and the united arab emirates up both fighting in yemen and it's here at this abu dhabi that they're shopping for the latest lethal technology both among the german industry's top clients but lin has repeatedly denied any knowledge of german made employed in yemen. i'm not aware of it we have in our coalition agreement laid down so i'm very strict rules for export of military weapons to parties immediately and directly involved in the german conflict it is now being implemented i have not heard any news about it so for. germany prides itself on these strict export guidelines which ban the sale of weapons to countries involved
8:13 am
in armed conflict. but d.-w. and its investigative partners report mentioned stand back and see in light us reports and belling cut trolled loads of phidias photos and satellite images and found evidence that german weapons sold to the emirates and saudi arabia oh in fact being used in the yemen wall in the air at sea and on land. this is a german made warship in the port of marco in yemen it's one of two mind sweepers sold to the emirates satellite images repeatedly showed german made vessels in the eritrean port of a sub sub is a main base for the naval blockade of yemen which has led to widespread starvation . this is a convoy of foreign mercenaries in yemen fighting for the emirates in the convoy a german built weapon station mounted on vehicles.
8:14 am
these fighters are dancing around the wreckage of a saudi arabian tornado combat jet which crashed in yemen tornadoes have many german component wooden's that exported to saudi and in the right that makes a big effect against him in use is that it is the tools of study and embarrassed a killing in many ways so i'm calling the west all that was doing in countries to start selling weapons to saudi and emerge back at the defense fair the m.e. raj he signed weapons. deals worth more than five billion dollars many of them with western companies and those arms too could end up in yemen's brutal conflict. and the w.'s naomi conrad who filed that report is with me in the studio now good morning knew me so you've been working on this investigation together with a number of other german news outlets you found evidence that german made arms are
8:15 am
being used in the conflict in yemen how did they get there. they were sold by the german government i mean we're talking about arms sold directly such as patrol vessels or helicopters but also components say of tornado jets and of other weapon stations so it's a mix of components that was sent via fed countries for example through the u.k. also directly and some of them were sold off of the wall started on helicopter. rifles guns a lot of weapons were exported even after the would been going on for several games and a lot of the human rights violations have been documented what kind of restrictions does germany on exporting weapons to places like yemen or countries involved in that conflict jim scott they strict guidelines in theory i mean we have guidelines. in sales to countries involved in armed conflicts and early last year the coalition possibly agreement on top of these guidelines which explicitly bans
8:16 am
exports to countries involved in the yemen war so in theory no no weapons and systems should be exported to these countries but obviously this is what our research shows the german government is making an exception when it comes to the emirates and saudi arabia these are strategic partners very important partners the government says they told us this in the regions and so they're just ignoring the guidelines german government is ignoring its own guidelines you say chancellor merkel government claims it has no knowledge of german arms being you. in yemen your team found evidence that such arms are indeed being used in yemen to help difficult was it to find that that evidence finding the evidence itself wasn't that difficult i mean we basically just used open source material that means we troll twitter and you tube and looked at satellite images on google earth verifying it was a little bit more difficult so to verify it we actually had to make eight these weapons
8:17 am
so we say maybe to just explain a little bit we found a video that showed. up with a german weapons system on it then we had to prove that was actually in yemen so we then looked at satellite images tried to compare the mountain range is how is is roads even rocks beside the road to see whether this actually matched up with satellite images we had and then when we had exact coordinates that meant yes this was a verified proof that these weapons these weapon systems were actually in yemen at the time the videos of the photos or whatever we're looking at claimed now you've mentioned the vessels boats have been used you mentioned other kinds of german millet german made military hardware being used in yemen do you have any estimate of how much of german made weaponry is actually there in being used in yemen in that conflict now that's difficult to quantify because. definitely play
8:18 am
a role i think components are incredibly important when it comes to for example the tornado jets but we also have i mean british american even east european arms have been used in this war so yes german arms are important and they important in the air on land and on sea but they're only part of the wider picture which is that this will could not be fought without weston. so there are other countries that also have weapons involved in this conflict but in germany's case to germany the german government has claimed no knowledge of weapons german made weapons being used there what is the german guns. saying about your investigation not so well so far we obviously confronted them with this evidence they declined to comment on specific weapons systems in use in yemen they just reiterated that the emirates our strategic part about them point in the region they've been quite tight lipped so far but they're still saying they have no knowledge so far yes there we thank you so much regulations on your reporting namely conrad from our investigative bureau.

a sheet. and iran's president has rejected the resignation of foreign minister mohamad sorry sorry announced he was stepping down on monday in an instagram post he is one of the main architects of iran's twenty fifteen nuclear deal with world powers. now if the latest turmoil over breaks it british prime minister theresa may has made a major concession by telling lawmakers that she supports a parliamentary vote to delay britain's exit from the european union may's move comes amid growing fears of economic chaos of britain exits the block is scheduled on march twenty ninth without a deal several government ministers threatened to resign if she didn't offer the possibility of extending negotiations. prime minister teresa mayes announcement of a motion to the labor exit is actually the announcement of a series of votes and more votes if parliament rejects the d.l.c.

a second popular referendum on leaving the e.u. if labor doesn't get the deal it wants to mass spoke to lawmakers on both sides of the divide well it's good that she's contemplating the possibility of an extension for the first time because there was been an effort to pull those people but i still think there's very little trust in what the prime minister has to say and i hope that means that this week parliament will take no deal off the table. but conceded all right we'll. fall into more of a ridge and it's. going to be years but at the end of it that's going to be we leave extended period. the motion to allow a delay goes before parliament wednesday injecting yet more uncertainty into a process that has exhausted many in britain and in the e.u. . now to nigeria where mohamedou bihari has won his second term as

president despite opposition claims that saturday's election was rigged nigeria's electoral commission formally declared the result early this morning showing a comfortable victory for the incoming well harry took office in two thousand and fifteen belling to fight corruption defeat. overhaul the country's infrastructure. let's cross over to. our correspondent tony is standing by she's in front of the the victorious president's a.p.c. campaign headquarters plenty well how do bihari has been declared the winner of this election what does this mean for nigeria. well the problems are pretty much the same past four years ago when president took office but a very first time you just named them it's about revamping the economy it's about fighting a very rampant corruption in this country and also the security in the especially

the stronghold the book already in the north east of the country so those problems did not go away in fact some of these problems have happened if i'd have worsened compared to four years ago but beyond that there's not a problem the president wired to unify this country because even though people to nine percent of votes cast for him according to official results what you want percent of the population did not cast a ballot for president barr's a.p.c. party or the contend for the party p.d.p. and the eye candy did. so that's going to be challenge as about on top of all the problems that you have mentioned before and that's already in a country that is still blitz along religious and after the rise so it's a lot of won't look say so for the old and no new government the reelected president president hu hari. what about. a book car funny who was the main challenger in this election the electoral commission says he lost is
