summit in less than a year plus a d.-w. investigation shows that german weapons are being used by militia groups in yemen civil war this despite claims by the german government that weapons sales the middle east are strictly controlled. am. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program a series of cross border incidents has ratcheted up tension between nuclear armed india and pakistan and here are the latest developments on that over the disputed region of kashmir pakistan says it has shot down two indian air force jets after they crossed the disputed border there an army spokesperson also saying that they captured two downed indian pilots the incident follows indian air strikes in pakistan admit of certain kashmir which. delhi says targeted the militants behind

a deadly suicide attack two weeks ago both countries have suspended commercial flights in the area. and joining me now from islamabad let's bring in journalist arsalan khalid and from delhi d.w. correspondent sonia found a car welcome to you both and sunny i'd like to begin with you what is the view in delhi on this dispute is there a sense of worry that things can spiral out of control hi sara i think there is suddenly a sense of worry here you know so far india has really not reacted to these claims about fighter jets being down but as we speak there is the ministry of external affairs in delhi is holding a press briefing and i'm just getting updates that india has now confirmed that they have an air force pilot missing and that the india claims that doesn't want to
11:03 am
so all that all along today we've been hearing claims and counterclaims that are also reports of india closing down several airports across north india close to the pakistani border in cities and fun job but also the crush made by the in srinagar which is the capital of india administered kashmir and that out of bolts of people on either side of the de facto border dividing indian administered in pakistan and this a country that there are reports of people being ostrava keep their homes that are reports of residents stockpiling food fearing it all out outbreak of war and given that arsalan i'd like to turn to you and ask you what the view is from pakistan because i mean for its part it says it's not interested in an escalation but this incident very much looks like retaliation for yesterday's strikes by india no. the. at the press conference and he made it clear that sun on forces an air force north to get delegates in response to then go from indian air force yesterday of
11:04 am
his son against states that you know they didn't want to tell you that the cost of peace and quote unquote were biggio he stated that he stated some stuff the dog gets a few months because a few months of it because they didn't want to click through that region. so focused on the one on one hand is this one in. the indian version or on the other hand is some states that do more want want do want these want to yes this is it and if i don't do the prime minister's office i'm in when the tension was raising off of the moment duck he addressed the nation and the message that he delivered conveyed to india was the same that it is in your darkest moment there's any kind of incursion pakistan is not going to take over tell you what pakistan is going to tell you so i see you television something a tense situation that you're really illustrating there sonja you know india's case
11:05 am
for these aerial strikes just on how solid ground is that because i mean yesterday they hit militants that they said they're holding responsible for the suicide bombing two weeks ago that targeted its paramilitary police it also said that those militants were planning more attacks but what is the evidence that they have presented to support their those claims or have they presented any. so no we don't have any details about those aerial strikes yet no no evidence as yet that we've been able to see but india did yesterday that it had credible intelligence to carry out the strike and that it was the target was. training camps training camp or militants of the group and this is the group that is based in pakistan and claimed responsibility vall that suicide is a suicide attack earlier this month on indian troops in kashmir but but there are
11:06 am
very few details as the at that also reports history that the pakistani authorities had cordoned off that area where the strikes took place they weren't even allowing the local police and so i think it will take some time before we get a clearer picture of what really happened there and also and i just like to perhaps gauge the mood also with you before we go because we know that the prime minister there imran khan is holding an emergency session with the national command authority that's of course the principal decision making body on nuclear issues are people there in pakistan are they concerned about the potential for a nuclear conflict with india. oh yes the mixed kind of sentiments but talking about absolute society to do on these traditions and more of people are actually concerned on the ongoing situation and the fighter jets flame all night. there is a definitely is a growing concern among people and brightest who are going to the meeting right now
11:07 am
there's going to address the nation later in the day let's see what his address is about and what his message to the india is going to be as i mentioned earlier baucus on one hand. is the on the other hand if this cleaning this it up you know a pox on one piece david de gea is the art press conference and dr spawn from the state it quite clearly we don't want to retaliate or to cost efficient peace we want peace to prevail between want want the war but yes if any kind of incursion is then we have no option to respond there's a concern to people there's a concern in the government as a son in astonishment and the situation is definitely not good for the border countries. khalid joining us from islamabad sunday funday car and delhi thank you so much to both. well now to the vietnamese capital have noise where u.s. president donald trump and north korean leader kim jong un are just over an hour
11:08 am
away from kicking off their second summit in less than a year the leaders are scheduled to have a brief one on one meeting followed by dinner donald trump began the day with talks with vietnamese president new in tong now the two countries signed off on a number of trade deals and trump once again held the u.s. relationship with vietnam as an example for north korea trump is pushing pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons program in exchange for economic development the talks of vietnam come eight months after a historic summit in singapore the first between a sitting u.s. president and a north korean leader. correspondent joins me now from hungary so as we've heard trump and kim will be meeting face to face today what can we expect . well i think that meeting today as you said there there's going to be a one on one conversation and then there's going to be that that joint dinner i think that's it's going to serve mainly for the two leaders to get acquainted with
11:09 am
each other again because if you think about the fact that they've only met each other once and that was at that summit in singapore in june of last year and they didn't get a lot of face time at that time so in hanoi here they planned for a bit more of that and that's what's going to that's going to happen tonight and i think president trump has already made it clear that it the personal relationship is important for him personal relationship with north korean leader kim jong un and he reiterated that in in his tweet this morning where he called kim jong il his friend now we know that after that one on one conversation we know who's going to join the two for that dinner and on the american side it will be mike bump a zero secretary of state and also acting chief of staff mick mulvaney now kim jong un will have by his side kim myong chol who is the former intelligence chief of north korea and now the chief nuclear negotiator in these talks with the u.s.
11:10 am
and also rio whole who is the north korea's foreign minister in that meeting or that not the meeting but the dinner schedule to last around one and a half hours sara and the summit itself of course you know the setting is hanoi what sort of role is vietnam itself playing in these talks. right well vietnam is has been touted by president trump not least time and time again as a potential development model he did that again this morning it is tweet telling north korea and telling kim jong un to look closely at vietnam because if he chooses to give up his nuclear weapons then this is the development path that north korea could go down to and it's quite impressive path i have to say vietnam has emerged from a war stricken impoverished country to become one of the most vibrant economies in one of the fastest growing economies in all of asia and they've accomplished that by implementing rigorous economic reforms and i've had

a look around the country to see where vietnam stands after some thirty years of economic opening have a look at this report. every few weeks when checks on her life stock cricket's. in two thousand and sixteen she co-founded the start up company cricket one north of vietnam's economic capital city she recruits local farmers like latrell hare to raise the crickets for her business. easy to produce and high in protein cricket one sells powder made from these insects as a sustainable food source around the world. when took advantage of that means governments push to promote innovative startups like hers in the past three years we had a lot of. to settle in and help. us to attract capital attract like. the prime minister. focusing on

phenomenally communist vietnam is today one of the fastest growing economies in asia. a feat that north korea seems to be intrigued by. one is a former economic advisor to the vietnamese government he has been in close contact with delegations from north korea. not. to implement business to develop the private sector. two there was a fight into nature tweaked the many question. of how vietnam could normalize every nation to washington and why as our market economy to form paced the civilized political leadership in vietnam vietnam has managed to liberalize its economy while keeping a tight grip on political freedoms. was something my corrie knows all

too well. her criticism of the government and her political activism have landed the singer in hot water with the authorities time and time again. yet now i'm not really open for. any idea about political if someone although not an organization about paul that is they will stop it from the beginning since two thousand sit on two now it's nearly two hundred people have been arrested and. rapid economic growth and a strict control of civil liberties it is this development model that north korean leader kim jong un could be looking closely at during his visit to vietnam.
11:15 am
so it is against that backdrop that the u.s. in the north korean leaders are meeting with on the table the topic of denuclearization bustin we know the first summit was really long on symbolism but a short on commitments to actually denuclearize the korean peninsula is there more pressure this time around to deliver something substantial. absolutely sara there are a lot of expectations for something more concrete to come out of these talks this time because the agreement that was reached at the end of or at the at the summit in singapore last time. the wording was extremely vague to the point where not even the parties themselves knew what it actually meant when you talk about denuclearization for example where they both obviously had different interpretations of what that would actually mean so this time yes there are expectations for something more substantial maybe potentially
11:16 am
a roadmap that spells out concrete steps towards nuclearization so that would allow to gauge the progress that's been made especially in light of the fact that since the last summit if you look at what happened regarding denuclearization it's not much on the contrary there are reports that indicate that kim jong un the north korean regime has been pushing forward with their nuclear program and they've even increased their nuclear stockpile sarah. boston heartache and why where this summit is set to kick off any moment now thank you. now before his meeting with kim trump used a low in his schedule to comment on events back in the united states media there are reporting that trump's former fixer michael cohen will give damning testimony to congress today cohen will say that trump is quote a racist con man and a cheat from vietnam trump tweeted the following michael cohen was one of many

a vote on march twelfth m.p.'s will also get to vote on a no deal exit from the union may announced on tuesday. gyptian state t.v. says that at least twenty people were killed and forty wounded after a fire broke out at cairo's main train station fire was reportedly set off by a train's fuel tank which exploded when the train crashed into a barrier. and in nigeria mohamedou karrie has won a second term as president the electoral commission declare the results early on wednesday saying that the incumbent won by a comfortable margin the opposition claims that saturday's election was right. now to yemen the weapons used there to wage war the four year conflict has created the world's worst humanitarian crisis the german government has repeatedly denied any knowledge of german arms and technology involved in the war but an exclusive investigation by a team of media outlets including the you knew suggests that those weapons are being used in yemen here's our report. in yemen's brutal war it's the
11:19 am
civilians who have bearing the brunt thousands have died millions on the brink of starvation. i think the dominant calls has been the saudi bad coalition the fact that it keeps bombing civilians and civilian infrastructure despite having the best weaponry money can buy. saudi arabia and the united arab emirates up both fighting in yemen and it's here at this and abu dhabi that they're shopping for the latest lethal technology both among the german arms industry's top clients but belin has repeatedly denied any knowledge of german made arms employed in yemen. i'm not aware of it we have in our coalition agreement let down very strict rules for export of military weapons to parties immediately and directly involved in the
11:20 am
german conflict it is now being implemented i have not heard any news about it so for. germany prides itself on these strict export guidelines which ban the sale of weapons to countries involved in armed conflict. but d.-w. and its investigative partners report mentioned stand back and see in light us reports and belling cut trolled loads of phidias photos and satellite images and found evidence that german weapons sold to the emirates and saudi arabia oh in fact being used in the yemen war in the air at sea and on land. this is a german made warship in the port of moscow in yemen it's one of two minds sweepers sold to the emirates satellite images repeatedly showed german made vessels in the eritrean port of a sub sub is a main base for the naval blockade of yemen which has led to widespread starvation
11:21 am
. this is a convoy of foreign mercenaries in yemen fighting for the emirates in the convoy a german built weapon station mounted on vehicles. these fighters are dancing on the wreckage of a saudi arabian tornado come budget which crashed in yemen tornadoes have many german component wooden's that exported to saudi and india writes that makes a big it kicks against yemenis is that it is the tools of intimidates to kill the many so i'm calling us all the mystery and interest to start filming with is to say . back at the defense for the m.e. raj he signed weapons deals worth more than five billion dollars many of them with western companies and those arms too could end up in yemen's brutal conflict. and the author of ever port very own naomi conrad is joining us now so i mean as we
11:22 am
saw there there was this evidence of german made arms being used in the war in yemen how did they get there they were sold legally either to the emirates and to saudi arabia and we're talking about weapons that were sold in the eighty's and ninety's but also quite recently there are quite a few examples of helicopters patrol vessels the rifles in warheads that was sold after the war started twenty fifteen the most recent example the warheads for military vessels were sold in late twenty eight point time in the war crimes and in yemen that were committed by all sides in the conflicts have well been documented by international human rights organizations it was pretty clear what was going on and what is going on in yemen i mean so what are the restrictions than just walk us through the actual policy of the german government when it comes to selling these sorts of arms to saudi arabia and the u.a.e. so if a german company wants to sell arms it has to go to the german government and ask one export license and. the german guidelines of pretty clear they forbid sells to
11:23 am
sales to countries involved in armed conflict and on top of that and that is quite important the coalition parties signed an agreement last year say also banning sales explicitly to countries involved in the yemeni war so it's pretty clear on conflict and yemen no weapons should be sold to countries involved in this will but they are and that's because these guidelines are not legally binding so if the government wants to can ignore to choose the guidelines as it does when it comes to saudi arabia and the emirates i mean there is a temporary ban on sales to saudi arabia at the moment following the death of saudi journalist but germany is still approving exports to the emirates and the german chancellor has weighed in on this we know that she herself or rather her government excuse me has claimed to have no knowledge of german made arms being used in yemen i mean your team quite clearly found evidence to the contrary how difficult was it to find that evidence i mean why do you think that the government. says that it
11:24 am
hasn't found that as well i mean the evidence wasn't difficult to talk i mean we just twitter and facebook and looked at satellite images verifying the evidence was a little bit harder so we tried to locate the weapons we found so to actually find out way exactly in one day to a certain video was shot and then to find the exact coordinates to verify it i mean finding a video with german arms in it is one thing you then have to actually definitively prove that these arms this video was shot in yemen and thereby prove it but i mean it took us a couple of weeks so it's maybe not impossible for the german government to do the same how much weapon tree are we talking about it's hard to quantify because both saudi arabia and the emirates buying in and have been buying and weapons for decades they have a lot of british weapons french weapons american weapons and a lot of weapons systems made up of components of components that come from germany
11:25 am
that come from other west. countries and then built together and in a weapon system but german weapons play an important role in particular in the operations components in the tornado jets lils and refueling jets which you need to fly longer bombing missions so they're very important but it's hard to quantify a number or percentage that's impossible to say his very own naomi conrad bringing us exclusive reporting here thank you. and finally we are heading now to the mediterranean island of malta where it is raining fish waves kicked up by storm tossed and found a fish on the waterfront a few brave souls ignore the weather warnings and went land fishing some of their catch was reportedly for sale at markets later but authorities warn that the strong fish might not use safety. reminder now of the top stories we're
