women are changing to. digital. swords march. this is t w news coming to you live from. cut short a highly talented summit with kim jong un for this particular visit we decided to walk and we'll see what happens. as he refused to ease sanctions on north korea in exchange for the country's partial denuclearization so was the meeting
9:01 am
a waste of time. meanwhile half a world away trump's former right hand man makes explosive allegations. he's a racist. he's a con being. used she. tells a congressional committee the president is a serial felon. listening to his testimony pledge that this is just the start of their investigation. hello i'm terry march and welcome to the program a dramatic turn of events in hanoi u.s. president and north korean leader kim jong un have ended their highly anticipated summit in the vietnamese capital with no agreement the talks were aimed at ending north korea's nuclear and missile programs in exchange for
9:02 am
a lifting of sanctions president trump had this to say about the outcome of the summit. basically they wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety and we couldn't do that they were willing to do you know caloric each portion of the areas that we wanted but we couldn't give up all of the sanctions for that so we continue to work it we'll see but we had to walk away from that particular suggestion we had to walk away from all the sanctions that are currently in existence remains are there in place and you know i was watching this a lot of you folks over the weeks of said no we've given up we haven't given up anything and frankly i think we'll end up being very good friends with chairman kim and with north korea and i think they have tremendous potential i've been telling everybody they have tremendous potential unbelievable potential but we're going to see but it was about sanctions i mean they wanted sanctions lifted but they weren't
9:03 am
willing to do an area that we wanted they were willing to give us areas but not the ones we wanted. u.s. president there speaking less than an hour ago in hanoi saying that he had to walk away from the negotiating table with north korea well our correspondent alexander from naaman has been covering the summit and joins us now from hanoi alexandra this isn't the outcome everyone was expecting is it. yes true we didn't expect that to happen no deal here in the noise because yesterday and even today in the morning it looks like that both leaders enjoyed their time together like a deal could be possible so it was rather a downloading stunning development that in the end they were not able to bridge the gaps and negotiations and to reach a deal here on the other hand we have to understand that the north koreans who were
9:04 am
from the beginning on very interested steve gadd to relieve from punishing economic sanctions and the u.s. as also made clear that it is not too willing to do that without seeing that progress is being met made on the ground and that the north koreans are really willing to move towards the nuclearization of the korean peninsula well we turned it we heard president trump there explaining why the talks broke down from his perspective has there been any word yet from the north koreans. and not yet that i am aware of what i heard is that key has already left to disarm its side and that he has already left hanoi but i don't have any official confirmation for that ok u.s. secretary of state mike pompei oh he was also at that press conference and commented on the negotiations breaking down let's hear what he had to say.
9:05 am
unfortunately we didn't get all the way we didn't get to something that that all. really made sense for the united states of america i think chairman kim was hopeful that we would we asked him to do more. he was unprepared to do that but i'm still optimistic i'm hopeful that the team will get back together and that the days and weeks ahead and continue to work out it's a very complex problem we've said since the beginning that this would take time our teams have gotten to know each other better we know what the limits are we know where some of the challenges are and i think as we continue to work on this in the days and weeks ahead we can make progress so that we can all tamil achieve what it is that the world wants which is to denuclearize north korea to reduce risk for the american people the people of the around the world. u.s. secretary of state my phone pair there saying that he's still optimistic and that this will take time so example this will take time where do things go from here.
9:06 am
well what we know what the white house told us is that those teams are going to continue their talks so we might see secretary pompeo troubling to the region we might see more negotiations or close teams trying to continue their talks what we have to say here is that the sticking point word the sanctions and the question if the u.s. is ready to lift sanctions and the past is not ready to do it's at the north koreans were apparently willing to dismantle one of its key nuclear sides young b m but that is something that they promised before and young still operational so it was not enough for the you asked to agree to lifting the sanctions or thank you so much for bringing us up to date of xander from naaman there in hanoi. or with us here in the studio is eric

bach a lecturer in korean studies for university good to see you again what's your take on what happened in hanoi. well. there is a couple of things i think we should take away from this we have to call it unfortunately failed summit meeting on the one hand we saw that it was not prepared at least not well enough we have to we have to remind ourselves that the working level on these negotiations was just recently a step list so there was not a lot of time on the working level to prepare all of the details apparently the big question will not be what are the lessons learned for the trump administration in how to move this process forward and it has to be that we need greater flexibility on the working level more time for the working level to hammer out the details which are very complicated when it comes to denuclearization when it comes to the
9:08 am
question of step missing a piece regime on the korean peninsula and the normalization of relations between basically two into going to stick states this is a big big challenge well how would you see that process moving for you say the progress needs to be made on the working level these negotiations are nothing new they've been going on under different presidents different north korean leaders for quite some time how would you approach that aside from saying they need to work on it what actually has to happen in concrete terms who needs to move what where first of all we have to remind us of that this is a different process this time around we have for the first time a top down mandate the mandate given by the leaders of north korea and the u.s. which is given to the working that we didn't have in previous negotiations so that is very different now of course we need to hammer what the details and as you mentioned the working level has a lot of work ahead of itself so i think it's important now to basically make
9:09 am
progress on all three fronts so to say in the denuclearization p. yes and no more decision from it the same time and there are some steps they can take immediately so we need to bring in nuclear experts to hammer out the technical details of such an agreement it's not enough to have diplomatic negotiations alone political negotiations until they are important to provide a framework and you need experts. basically hammer out the details of what denuclearization process actually looks like and how long it's going to take because there is there's a very different take from the political and diplomatic circles when it comes to denuclearization and the experts the experts would say it takes at least a decade at least ten years for a forty nuclearization of the korean peninsula so you need expert right no
9:10 am
otherwise you create false hopes for a denuclearization process which will take much longer than political circles would think so this process is about much more than the united states saying we will live certain sanctions and you north korea should richard get rid of your nuclear weapons and nuclear weapons program in certain areas it's much more there's much more at stake here than that yes and i think the failed to make no actually proves that they had apparently an agreement on the table with just some details missing from what we hear but it's those details who does what at what time who gives one who receives what and this is on the working you have to hammer out those details to negotiate those. like small and small appointees even saying that this is a different process from negotiations that have taken place in the past because this is top down with the top leaders giving
9:11 am
a mandate to the working level do you see more more possibility for actually making progress in this. system that we have in place now or in this negotiating arrangement than we have had in the past i do i certainly do i think that this is a window of opportunity that opened in the last year and the international community can support to keep this window of opportunity open. of course the details when it comes to the denuclearization question is between the u.s. and north korea to negotiate but when it comes to providing basically space a neutral space for negotiations when it provides when it comes to such issues as confidence building measures there is something europe can do as well. in this particular issue. a lecture in korean studies or brilliance for university thank you so much for your input. well while the kim

summit was taking place in hanoi in washington for lawyer michael cohen delivered sensational testimony to congress he called president trump a racist at a con man and a cheat trump said cohen's testimony had been shameful few lied a lot but it was very interesting because he did lie about one thing he said no collusion with the russian hoax and i said i wonder why he didn't just lie about that do like he did about everything else and he lied about so many different things and i was actually impressed that he didn't say well i think there was collusion for this reason that he didn't say that he said no collusion and i was. you know a little impressed by that frankly because if we could have gone all out he only won about ninety five percent of sort of one hundred percent but the fact is there is no collusion and i call it that which aren't should never happen to another president this is so bad for our country so bad. you look at this whole. hoax
9:13 am
call it the russian witch hunt and now add the word hoax it's a very very bad thing for our country but. i was impressed with the fact that he went you know because the most important question up there was one of inclusion and he said he saw no collusion so we'll see what happens but it was pretty shameful i think. and that was yes present donald trump of course commenting on his former lawyer michael cohen's testimony to congress our correspondent stuff on c months is in washington has been following the testimony that michael cohen has been giving and of course the press conference in hanoi with president trump commenting on it so what do you make what it rather well how are trump's comments going down there in washington. it's a little to early to tell because in the middle of the night here but i can guarantee you that there will be plenty of observers and experts as well as of
9:14 am
course right and left of the political divide here who will disagree with the president and will call him out for maybe a misjudgment if the president thinks so say many that collusion is still the hottest topic well that changed after mr cohen testified yesterday because he accused judge the president the sitting president all for committing actually criminal acts to criminal acts and that is a lying about his contacts and knowledge about week elites releasing a or dumping thousands of e-mails about the democratic campaign and hillary clinton at the time and secondly advising and asking ordering. mr cohen to pay a. film star which he lied about to that he apparently didn't know about this so
9:15 am
those would be if proven correctly and it looks like some evidence that the president committed to something which you would supposed to do when he's president so that's going to be a little bit iffy so it is basically what a lot of people say him turns out to be a very bad week a bad news sandwich so to speak for donald trump with the failed summit in hanoi and the trouble here in washington where he's now returning to it so this is going to be fun ok so it's still too early for responses to what the president had to say about cohen's testimony but of course there has been a lot of reaction to michael cohen's testimony to congress already in washington what's the what's the uptake on in terms of how damaging cohen's testimony will actually be for president politically. depends on who you ask if you again right and left of the political divide if you ask democrats and the left or
9:16 am
the progressive and the so-called resistance to donald trump how damaging this testimony was they say it was that is basically the beginning of the impeachment process for donald trump couldn't get any worse for donald trump and mr cohen is a very very important building block in making the case about or against donald trump and how bad he is for the country for the united states for the world and as a president if you ask republicans and his supporters of course not only in the company but in the senate or. in the house as well as in the country don't forget thirty percent. of americans are his core base so they are supporting the president and they will support the president beyond what mr cohen now said they will wipe this away and say it doesn't really matter mr cowen himself is a bad character and a crook that's why he will go to present prison after all and the president can do no bad at all so the country remains along those fault lines from the legal fallout
9:17 am
it's divided. washington correspondent thank you so much. now let's catch up on some other stories making news around the world today thousands of supporters of the embattled venezuelan president have taken to the streets of the capital caracas they were protesting threats of foreign military intervention in the crisis ridden nation opposition efforts to bring in humanitarian aid have been through by government security forces. british lawmakers have approved measures that could result in a delay to break that beyond the march twenty ninth deadline he's voted to approve prime minister to resign may's new plan for leaving the e.u. it includes an option for parliament to vote on extending the current deadline which would give me more time to try and renegotiate the agreement with e.u. leaders. and egyptian state t.v. says at least twenty people were killed and forty wounded after
