during his presidency trump says cohen is lying. plus baucus on extends an offer to ease the crisis trying to sit in ron contests on the fucking sun would release the pilots of an indian war plane shot down over the disputed border territory millions more from pakistan's ambassador to germany. u.s. president donna trump and north korean leader kim jong own have ended their highly anticipated summit in vietnam with no agreement the talks were aimed at agreeing on concrete measures for peace on the korean peninsula and build on positive sentiments expressed at their first historic summit but donald trump say storks

broke down after you refused to lift all sanctions against pyongyang. that was no lunch and no signing ceremony instead president trump's motorcade headed away from the summit venue after talks broke off prematurely. the hanoi meeting was the second he's had with kim jong un after a summit in singapore last year critics called that one big on style and low on substance so this time donald trump was under pressure to deliver results a clear timetable from pyongyang for dismantling its nuclear program for example from the outset he made it clear that he wasn't going to be rushed. very very much to giving their speed is not that important to record. and in perhaps the most public commitment to international demands yet a comment from north korea's kim jong il when asked whether he was ready to did new

clear ice. building in your generosity and if i'm not really sure that i won't be here right. there. it will be the best answer you've ever but with pyongyang pressing its own demands president trump was left to explain why the talks fell apart basically they wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety and we couldn't do that. they were willing to the new go large portion of the areas that we wanted but we couldn't give up all of the sanctions for the so we continue to work at will say but we had to walk away from that particular suggestion we had to walk away from. it was a dispiriting end to a much more until meeting with the sanctions issue still far from resolved it appears the road to disarming north korea will be a long one. the detail is washington bureau chief on xander phenomenon wasn't one hour to cover that summit for us she had this to say about the abrupt end to those

talks. i am afraid we have lost that support and i apologize for that now while donald trump was busy at the summit in hanoi back in washington transform a lawyer was giving damning testimony about him to a congressional committee my take on what for trump for ten years that he said that during that time trump repeatedly committed crimes before and during his term as president and said he was like a mafia don now cohen is facing a three a sentence for lying to congress in two thousand and seventeen as well as other charges but cool and insists he's not lying now i've acknowledged i have made my own mistakes and i have owned up to them publicly and under oath but silence and complicity in the face of the daily destruction of our

basic norms and civility to one another will not be one of them given my experience working for mr trump i fear that if you lose the election in two thousand and twenty that there will never be a peaceful transition of power and this is why i agreed to appear before you today . the only president trump was in hanoi for the summit he was following cohen's testimony from day he called his former lawyer statement shameful. he lied a lot but it was very interesting because he did lie about one thing he said no collusion with the russian hoax and i said i wonder why he didn't just lie about that too like he did about everything else and he lied about so many different things and i was actually impressed that he didn't say well i think there was collusion for this reason or that he didn't say that he said no collusion and i was . you know a little impressed by that frankly because if we could have got all the. stuff was

president from speaking just before he left tannoy we saw washington correspondent stefan see months just how damaging the testimony could be for tom spencer didn't say. depends on who you ask if you again right and left off the political divide if you asked democrats and the left or the progressives and the so-called resistance to donald trump how damaging this testimony was they say it was that it's basically the beginning of the impeachment process for donald trump couldn't get any worse for donald trump and mr cohen is a very very important building block in making the case about or against donald trump and how bad he is for the country for the united states for the world and as a president if you ask republicans and his supporters of course not only in the company but in the senate or in. the house as well as in the country don't forget thirty percent. of americans are his core base so they are supporting the president
2:07 pm
and they will support the president beyond what mr cohen now said they will buy this away and say it doesn't really matter mr cowen himself is a bad character and a crook and that's why he will go to present prison after all and the president can don't do no bad at all so the country remains along those fault lines political fallout it's divided. you're watching the w. news coming up ahead pakistan offers to return an indian pilot shot down over disputed kashmir pretension still running high between the nuclear neighbors and be asking pakistan's ambassador about that and more in just a few minutes. but first let me bring you up to date with some other stories making news around the world thousands of supporters of the venezuelan president nicolas maduro have taken to the streets of caracas they were protesting against tracts of foreign military intervention in the crisis hit nation opposition efforts to bring

2:09 pm
a diplomatic failure he had hoped to reach a deal although u.s. intelligence agencies warned him that north korea is unlikely to give up its nuclear weapons he had hoped that his personal rapport with kim jong un what's helped bridge gaps in negotiations but that didn't happen instead of bringing home a huge foreign policy success left. hand and now for some analysis on the just concluded summit i'm joined in the studio by hans from free university a welcome we had with our correspondents there had to say huge disappointment on the korean side and obviously perhaps some disappointment also on the american side what is your take on the summit was it a waste of time no not at all i mean at this point of time it's difficult to say but i would term this way it's a hard success is only half success because they didn't reach an agreement they didn't sign substantial agreements but it's still a success because those two leaders of those two countries that have been in
2:10 pm
a hostile relationship for the last seventy years have met for the second time now and they have talked about the main major issues even after the summit the rhetoric remained positive so i think it's a half a success would is a total failure when you can sign an agreement usually when leaders of this caliber but the top leaders need for a summit of this kind with much anticipation. that all the work is done the leaders come in and just sign the dotted paper the. work is already done by their delegations you know that's what you usually would expect but even at the first summit i was thinking maybe it's it won't be that successful as that actually turned out to be but because it's north korea we're talking about here and we have donald trump on the other side so donald trump is always and will be always a very large element of uncertainty so this is not a usual summit and seeing it in this light i would say i'm cautious here but i
2:11 pm
would say this is not a failure but a half a success and we will see that in the future so what do you think went wrong. i think it's difficult to say of course but i think it was donald trump who. demanded too much in the last moment so. you could see from from the north korean perspective we gave him an inch and he wanted wanted to go the mile and i mean you have to be clear about north korea they don't they cannot given all at once even a complete road map that's too much for north korea because the atomic bombs the nuclear weapons is all they have and if they declare that in the first place they have nothing to negotiate with so to be realistic you cannot demand that but trying to make one of the under list of expectations from both sides donald trump expecting north korea to give the only bargaining chip it has its nuclear program and for the united states to lift all the sanctions is what north korea wanted and
2:12 pm
that's the only kind of weapon that the western world has on north korea if this was really the case that both demanded these unrealistic aims then of course there was very unwise but i cannot imagine north korea because they have they have to be very small because they have not much to bargain with so i don't think they demanded we give you only the younger one facility and you give us all the sanctions i don't believe so i think it's rather. it's both sides always it's this time i think. from just one of the big deal to the great deal and that was the problem so then very you see this going given that this summit had to be abandoned without an agreement what does the future look like in terms of actually come together and finding a more substantial treaty i think that's what i said earlier i think it's still a half a success and they now know what much better what the sides are expecting from each
2:13 pm
other so i suppose they will have more meetings on the on the working level which is also very important some commentators that there was not a much not sufficient preparation for this summit so this will be continuing and i'm sure also north korea will play mediating role but one important point here is i think the european union and also germany can play a very important role now since we have the situation here tried to harness most of from but as for university thank you very much feel analysis. turning now to pakistan where the prime minister says his country will release a captured indian pilot on friday in iran contoured a joint session of parliament the move to release a link amanda of the nun than was a peace gesture to was india a tensions between the nuclear neighbors saw it when pakistan shut down the pilots aircraft on wednesday over the disputed territory of kashmir.
2:14 pm
the conflict rumbles on overnight a tourist shells landed on both sides of the line of control after wednesday's aerial drooling rush detentions up further newspaper splashed on the incident but many details are may not clear pakistan says it shot down two indian fighter jets and published these images to prove its version of events. it also released this video of a captured indian pilot. disputed kashmir region has again brought the nuclear powers to the brink of war. the latest escalation began two weeks ago when forty indian police were killed in a suicide bombing in. delhi blamed the attack on pakistani based group jaish e mohammed. india retaliated by bombing what it claims was a militant training camp near the pakistani town of balakot saying a fall of intelligence that the group was planning further attacks. on pakistan prime minister imran khan has called for talks with india. the response from delhi
2:15 pm
pleasure and a saber rattling speech by prime minister narendra modi india. had won india i believe got. india. india. india have even had one. but the on the bluster neither side wants kashmir to become a battlefield again in a bid to deescalate comments to khan announce that in in part it will be released but also said it has received india's files from the suicide bombing attacks on his promise to punish those responsible presented with evidence. so does the indian pilots released in pakistan is serious about easing tensions between the two neighbors i think that question to pakistan's ambassador to germany would join me in the studio. who look is calling for the exclusion of you all know what the
2:16 pm
escalation means now because this whole crisis has frank up because of they did aggression you don't know what happened you know like the. indian planes which the . second string. making such constructs on pakistan but they're widely. spaced they tried to bomb of course there was no need to ask but they need claims you know. they did claim something beyond what they claimed but in actual fact all that happened was that some trees on sort of sort of like uprooted was basically the bombing happened in a forest and just perform and stand in a craft for president on the space and they had to leave so they induce a position is that this was a preemptive non military strike targeting specifically what they called a terrorist camp run by the mohammad and that's the group that claimed
2:17 pm
responsibility for the attack which took place a few weeks ago in indian administered kashmir if pakistan says they are no such camps and they only only hit kind of forests and there was no casualties and there was no information infrastructure damage why did pakistan feel the need to fire back and retaliate first of all this is not what i'm saying international media reporter was that we saw what has happened. so it's you know and all the international support al-jazeera reporter also said that there was a gesture bahama seventy madrassa there and which was potentially recruiting jihad these i don't think you said that but the important thing here is first of all why was it a problem the problem is this whole concept of a preemptive strike basically what it was was in a christian you know and it's was in total contravention of international law in
2:18 pm
between pakistan and india since one thousand nine hundred eighty one so we're talking with five kids here this has not taken place although as you know in the past as well they have been ok sions for the tension level has risen so this is the first time in fifty years that india committed this aggression and nationally there would have been a response to this aggression and their sponsors there for the world to see the two indian a craft have been downed we have a pilot in the custer in pakistan's custody you know one of the cry. after filing the puck some side other aircraft on the indian side so what we have shown here is that we have to capability we have the will we have the right to defend ourselves and we will maybe even in the terms of these figures disputed pakistan claims they downs two aircraft india says one aircraft is missing and the other was an f. sixteen which belonged to pakistan but be that as it me tensions are they high everyone is calling for deescalation pakistan is offering dialogue now the question
2:19 pm
many in india ask is why do we have a dialogue going at once level pakistan in public office a dialogue but in private they are offering a safe haven to terrorists elect the gesture of mohammad. these accusations you know these aren't in a position which you believe substance i mean they come to accuse asians as well so everybody knows the keys of commission judge if you know the indian spires serving the naval officer you know what they have been doing in pakistan in baluchistan other parts of pakistan pakistan has been facing terrorism to a much greater degree that india has you know the number of tests that we have phased in the last ten years you have to talk about seventy thousand people so what does that mean that we should just go and attack india because you know you cannot just accuse somebody and then sort of you know we have austin our prime ministers in very clear on that we said they should provide actionable evidence if they do that we will investigate them not india says it's provided
2:20 pm
a lot of evidence in other previous attacks mr place in india the indian fall in what was attacked in two thousand and one the mumbai attacks in two thousand and eight the u.-t. attacks in two thousand and sixteen are let me let me clarify that this is the first of all the intelligence of the deuce here that they have provided on this has now been provided you know just yesterday as you know why didn't it happen in the first place you know before this started you know because they started that aggression without even sort of going to substantiating any of their position. in the past as well you know if you said they have forwarded disease having people what it was used to them we had much bigger evidence you know what we have. in custody you know a game when to say that we sort of you know shot down a parsing of sixteen words and you know what they're obviously you provide evidence for that we substantiate that which you know it would but this is just sort of you know based on their belief you know and sometimes you know you don't. know what you make in terms of believe believe as you know prime minister modi you would believe
2:21 pm
there are thousands of years ago in doing time to be able to grasp it and there were never given you in from the council you have. so this is like so obviously both sides have their own version of events and of course pakistan also believes india funds terrorism heads terrorists and the other citizens sides have the thing . invested joselyn which is a pleasure to have you with us. and that as you saw the best of pakistan you're sitting talking to me earlier me one pakistan's civil aviation authority has said it's it's shut down its space to all commercial flights dozens of flights were cancelled from thailand on wednesday night bangkok airport officials said over four thousand travelers were affected the airspace closure came shortly after pakistan's claimed it had shot down two indian warplanes anti air bases flights to europe of brazil on thursday turning down
