describe the damage as catastrophic saying the biggest challenge is the sheer volume of debris the storms created the death toll is expected to rise as rescuers search through large numbers of destroyed homes at least forty people are being treated in local hospitals alabama's governor warns that more severe weather might be on the way. new anti-government demonstrations have broken out in algeria after president. bush announced he would run in elections next month people have been taking to the streets for the last ten days to protest against the president's plans to remain in office now he has offered to step down within a year if reelected but it's unclear if this will appease the demonstrators. demonstrations are officially banned here but that didn't stop thousands of people from taking to
7:03 am
the streets these protests have been going on for almost two weeks now most of the demonstrators are young and they want an end to the beautiful era which has lasted twenty years. out of that chilly i think i'm curious have gotten over their fear on the streets to show that we reject the system of government we're calling for freedom all kinds of freedom including freedom off the press that's why we hear and we're not there from dawn for the love for them we're here to denounce this mafia government these criminals who have taken the people hostage she wants to make a man who is parity a life president again judy i know you keep pressing the role that. the man the protesters are unhappy with president putin registered on sunday to run again in the upcoming election or more to the point he had his team register for him the president himself was in a swiss hospital in geneva efficiently and. for

a routine checkup he's been in a wheelchair since suffering a stroke in two thousand and thirteen and rarely makes public appearances his reaction to the demonstrations is what he's always done when things get dicey trying to reassure the public he's promised to call for early elections should he get reelected whether that would be enough to calm the end rest is far from certain . sick of us from the only thing that would work to get the people off the streets is if the president renounce his candidacy so that could be done on medical grounds just on it however at the moment that doesn't look likely is in fact a resource rich nation with large gas and oil reserves but recent drops in the price of crude oil has hit the economy hard every day life has become a struggle for many algerians almost half of the population is under age twenty and unemployment remains high people are frustrated and the government seems to be paralyzed to see people outraged with a president who has become more authoritarian yet he himself has barely been up to
7:05 am
the task of ruling and his closest allies have gotten rich over the years that people don't know whether beautifully to himself has decided to run again or someone else decided for him. to cross the country protesters are demanding a new better future to flee because rule may very well be coming to an end what happens afterwards raises many questions opposition parties are hopelessly splintered and powerless these are indeed decisive days in algeria. for some analysis now let's bring in. the middle east and north african consultant based in boston thanks for being with us this morning first of all. president good to police it is saying that he is going to run again for president but he promises that if elected he won't complete his term and he'll call early elections is that going to convince his critics. i believe that that is star going to be the case
7:06 am
because the key the key word as was mentioned in your report is barely alive and here we're not even we're not only talking about i'm going as if the trip i'm president we're talking about the entire algerian system the usher the country out of its civil war in one nine hundred ninety nine and what is clear from the demonstrations and the matter the outpour of anger and emotions in the past two weeks is that the us are looking for him and not only for the vote fifty era but also for the current system that is governing algeria which is a hybrid of business interests intelligence services military and political. centers of power that are controlling the country and if not addressed potentially looking at a very as well on the mediterranean type of scenario given that. an economy is faltering and the people know that and she looked on them every day and they
7:07 am
decided who is responsible for their problems and that sometimes it works and for the regime to stadium so now there's not going to this is not going to satisfy the public opinion based on what i have seen now we are seeing precious hts in algeria continuing in in the capital algiers but also outside of algeria in places like paris how much staying power do you think this protest movement permits. i'm not sure that is the right question. again the context here is that we're looking at a man who was brought as a consensus candidate to. walk a culture out of a bloody decade of civil war and that that man who has been in power for twenty years either by design or by incompetence she and the system failed to produce seven air or someone who could take the baton and lead to concentrate on
7:08 am
and so the fundamental problem that we're having here is we want to know where the algerian system of government itself has run out of life it's on life support and the real risk here is for the situation to escalate and that the military that has been to politicize for the last decade at least would step in and wake up one day and you don't have tanks in the streets and a scenario akin to what happened in egypt so the situation is fraught with dangers and the most important thing here to remember is that the share is not of the protests the protests are a reaction it is the regime itself that is destabilizing algeria and as very important to remember nasser what the. middle east analyst based in boston thank you very much for your analysis thank you. now to some of the stories

hundred people have died mostly very young children who are vaccinated that department has declared a measles outbreak and says that it is now struggling to contain it. there's this really a need to do a d v d's because the challenge is to attain the herd immunity herd immunity means that you have people who are vaccinated so that those who are not vaccinate that are able to transmit their survival and in fact others. in the philippines have been dropping in the last few years a recent scare involving a dandy vaccine caused immunization rates to plummet and even further. this our. resources. we have a vaccine coverage where the. even what the forty percent.

are you going out but the news about kids dying from the dengue fever vaccination scared me so i was scared to have my children vaccinated. but now i know it's for their own safety. immunization rates are steadily rising again health authorities hope that the continued confidence in vaccines will help stem this measles outbreak. well misinformation back scenes is dangerous but unfortunately it's very easy to find online a reporter jarrett reid is here he's been scouring social media looking to see what the vaccination debate is there so tell us just how is social media fuelling. vaccine messages well the anti vaccination movement has grown a lot over the last twenty years or so and because of the us a lot of the information that people are being directed to when they search for it
7:15 am
is unscientific information and facebook is one of the big problem areas here because it's where a lot of these groups known as anti vax is have they're based on this want to show you what happened to me when i did some searches on facebook so we opened facebook here i typed in the word vaccinations in the search bar you can clearly see clearly here one of the top results is vaccines cause. autism we know that this is been debunked but it's something that just won't go away this is what happens when i just type in the neutral would vaccine by itself the very top result for me is something called the vaccine truth movement it's a group that's got seventeen thousand members in phoenix arizona i can't see what they have posting because it's what's called a closed group but we can see pretty clearly it's anti vaccine and what we can see is the rules and the guidelines the group itself is drawn up for members let's look
7:16 am
at two of the others the first one is suggesting while promoting doctors pharmaceuticals over the counter drugs and other poisonous substances you'll be removed and any post that conveys the approval of vaccines will be deleted removed and blocked and this is pretty key here because by creating rules like this in a closed group situation women does have to be approved these groups can spread misinformation and not actually be challenged by it and that group is just one of many that exist on facebook and like i said they're very easy to find this one took me about forty seconds to get what a social media company is doing about this because it seems like if you've got patently false information that being spread this really shouldn't be i think the big social media companies like facebook and you tube to understand the problem but i would probably argue they're not doing quite enough about it and this goes beyond
7:17 am
anti-vaccination of course these platforms have a problem with misinformation in general political propaganda or extremism all of these things have found a place on these platforms and so they've been calls for them to do something about it when it comes to you last month you tube said it was going to recommend a few of videos that could misinform view is in full ways videos like promoting miracle cure is when it comes to facebook last year it said it would stop. misinformation that contributed to violence and high but we have to keep in mind facebook is still making money from ads placed by anti-vaccination groups for its part has stopped doing do we know if this misinformation on social media is actually influencing decisions that people make on whether to vaccinate or not know . and that's because these big social media companies pretty jealously god they use an engagement and we value that it's very difficult to do independent research on
7:18 am
behavioral patterns and one thing i do need to point out no matter what the social media companies do people can still find a lot of information through websites and things like that so it's one part of the puzzle sure thank you so much for your. reporter jared reed. now it's been eight years since the fukushima nuclear plant in japan was destroyed by an earthquake and tsunami the disaster sent radioactivity over a large area forcing tens of thousands of people to flee the plant's operator tepco says radiation has now subsided to the point that much of the area can be visited without special protection gear i reporters went to the plant to see what it looks like today. chip wants to persuade us that it has the situation under control and. we're not allowed to film everything here but at least we get a glimpse of what they think control might mean the building containing its nuclear

the goal of thirty to forty years is not based on exact information but is instead a rough estimate in order to get a more exact timetable we would have to gather even more data. and now the problem is disposing of the contaminated water. about one million two hundred thousand cubic meters of contaminated cooling and runoff water stored in these tanks but time is of the essence as the tanks can only hold another two hundred thousand cubic meters. the water is not clean despite extensive attempts to decontaminate it riteish and levels the still too high fishermen and farmers in the region are worried that in the end the water will just be dumped in the sea. seems the call for action against climate change is being answered by more and more young people around the world since august tens of thousands of peoples in europe and as far as
