and china. for years while way has sought to reassure the world of two things that it is not under the control of the chinese government and that it doesn't spike on consumers. a shift in tone from defense to accusation the us government has a long. way. it has hurt our servers and the story are you merril's and this. allegations of american government interference and theft of corporate secrets while ways message to the united states we can play the blame game two hours before the announcement the backdrop to what's becoming an ever escalating dispute wild ways chief financial officer among wang jew leaving her house in canada for an appearance in course she's been detained in the country
2:03 pm
since december accused of helping her company violates u.s. sanctions on iran she claims the arrest violated her rights and is politically motivated. while ways decision to sue the american government to an already high cost conflict the u.s. effort to get allies to shun the firm threatens to bar the company from major markets and puts billions of dollars of investment in super high speed five g. networks that all risk it also adds tension to an already complicated trade relationship between the world's top two economies. monica jones from good of you business has been following this story for us hi monica this is now going to the courts far away says it's being unfairly discriminated against what do you make of that it just gets more and more interesting by the day so me this whole you could surmise like what goes around comes around i mean that is an interesting shift in tone certainly so far because these accusations are not new
2:04 pm
and so far away has taken a very defensive stance even though it was accused of having far too close links to the chinese government's you know doing everything at beijing's. be heyst spying on customers stealing corporate secrets and so forth have been very strong allegations so far away was sort of very you know almost gentleman like about it very quiet dramatic shift in tone now it's suing the u.s. government saying that the ban the u.s. government has implemented is unlawful pointing out rightly so that the u.s. has so far failed to actually provide any evidence for the accusations and i think that is very interesting also saying that the u.s. is with its actions misleading the public and i sing there we get to the core of what's happening now because your way knows what's at stake is a very successful company it is the world's largest or second largest smartphone provider and it is the leader in five g.
2:05 pm
technology which is highly sought after the whole world needs it just remember that five g. fast internet absolutely necessary in order to have smart mobility smart cities automated driving without five g. you can forget about all this so all the big nations of course want to have five g. she way is the market leader there but doesn't do any good if the world doesn't trust she a way then it might just have to resort to the chinese market and obviously that's not its interest to the writer as ask we can't forget this comes at a time where the u.s. and china are trying to talk their way out of a trade dispute essentially what does were always move mean for those top. well officially they are not part of those talks but of course if a chinese company is suing the u.s. government at any time not just now doesn't go down too well it is very sensitive and it is highly political and it will certainly weigh on those folks the former
2:06 pm
adviser of the obama administration i think only last night even sort of almost gave donald trump a compliment that he's sort of having an edge in those talks over china so let's see how this now moves with this new element of your way basically signaling hold on you know you can't just go on lashing out against us because we have an ace up sleeve and that is the five g. signal logy and we're not that forgiving so you might need us as much as we need you all right monica jones from d.w. business following this thank you so much for your analysis. now a german court has handed down prison sentences of between three and ten years to four man accused of operating a dark net platform for child sexual abuse images the platform was called elysium and it was one of the largest such websites in the world. it took prosecutors months to gather the evidence the four men were accused of setting up and operating

a child pornography platform on the dark net investigators said the men had managed the illegal pornographic content on the elysium network was meant to be out of us of the material posted on elysium showed every kind of abuse imaginable of children and teenagers and i was playing on the victims included newborns and babies the platform was discovered in twenty seventeen and immediately shut down the case made international headlines due to the large number of subscribers investigators found one hundred twelve thousand user accounts paedophiles around the world were offered photos and videos of the worst kind of child abuse on a platform operated from germany prosecutors said the network allowed the exchange of illegal material to be as easy as online shopping investigators will continue to sift through the evidence and work with international authorities to bring additional prosecutions. our political correspondent hans brunt is
2:08 pm
following this case for us these convicted men received sentences of between three and ten years why is there such a big difference in the length of these sentences. well first of all this the sentences are significant because it's the people who are around this network who had the service who have ministered the whole thing who have been convicted no no no in other words not simple uses. and the extent to which they were involved the extent to which they. actually were involved in the administration of this network is some reflection of the severity of the sentences. high highest sentences severest sentence was given to a man who is also being convicted of himself abusing two children by which it was arranged through this network so that's the that's the gamut of. convictions that was that was pos today the investigation into this platform comes from
2:09 pm
a cooperation between germany and australia what can you tell us about that well this network was of initially set up apparently once another network of similar nature had been shot down by the australian police and the australians managed to attract on this network and in fact to some extent kept it going for a while and sort of try to some of its uses a so-called honey trap to attract people and to try and track the actual people that were involved and there were in fact a strategy able to find out then that the service of those network were positioned in germany were in germany and then passed on the information to the german authorities so it was very important in this case that there was an international cooperation amongst the investigating with or to use or it's an important best again in the prison sentences are significant but this network had more than one hundred thousand users isn't it likely that the platform has already been replaced with something else. that's very likely yes indeed the demand for this kind of
2:10 pm
material appears to be there and it's likely that there will be further such platforms being set up and one has to say that this kind of abuse takes place almost daily in fact in germany there's a very big case being investigated at the moment of children that have been abused on the camping side to in western germany so yes this kind of thing has to one has to say it continues and the prosecutions obviously have to continue as well our political correspondents brian thank you. you're watching the news that still to come an about face in hungary as the ruling party and their party they're a greaser a place a controversial set of anti e.u. billboards a correspondent and would ask explain. first first let's catch up on some other stories making news around the world french cardinals phillipe back at home says he will resign as an archbishop of new york she announced a decision after a court found him guilty of failing to inform authorities about sexual abuse

heidi how tyler one of the lawmakers in the european parliament who had filed the suit she joins us from brussels this hotel a thank you for joining us on g.w. the european food safety agency according to today's ruling now does have to release the studies on life to say so that must be a victory for you did you get what you wanted. yes yes we actually got more than we expected because it's a total victory in the key questions there's an overriding public interest which goes above the commercial interests of the companies in terms of disclosure so health and environment are more important than a company's financial and commercial interests this is wonderful and then the court actually defied the defined the emissions into the environment which was a bit of a key element in the dispute as real that not something which would be just hypothetical so we have a landmark ruling also on the or who is going winston on on public access to
2:21 pm
environmental information and which now confirms that when a substance is released into the environment by virtue of its function it will have real emissions and they have to be covered by public access to information so the very good judgement for health and safety nets out why is it so important to find out what is in the studies what you expect to find out about plastic. obviously none of the four of us is a toxicologist and the whole point is that the science by nature has to be peer reviewed and seen some of the data and studies remain confidential according to the previous decision which was now a nod it's impossible for the scientific or community to conduct a peer review and now this is all going to be possible and this will definitely trust the decisions that public offering these are taking but do you think european
2:22 pm
commission already declared this weed killer safe are you saying you don't trust that decision. yeah that's that's the whole point that of course if we have access to that information which then can be reassessed and double checked by the scientific community our researchers then then i would say that the trust will be there so as as it was mentioned there was a controversial assessment by two different bodies in this question and that of course raises questions and questions that must be addressed by by further scientific assessment and i believe that if site actually also understands that transparency is key to public trust and. it's a very important public or thore and i hope that they will take do you attention to do this meant so this is about transparency about public interest what do you think this ruling today could actually change on the ground in the way that glyphosate is
2:23 pm
used. i don't think there will be any change on the ground unless there's a very strong public attention and maybe more national every street since through the use and there have been national restrictions on close to kindergarten seen public places but the real thing will in my view come when the commission has to to look at the continuation of the permit of life state and that comes in in a few years time so then certainly this ruling has an importance because then the scientific community will have a much better chance to to see that things go right and that the scientific assessment of life is it is correct right heidi hotel or member of the european parliament for the green party thank you very much for joining us. thank you.
