the weather was clear the plane was new so was when drop also on the program. prosecutors dropped charges against an indonesian woman accused of assassinating the heart of north korea's the leader kim jong un so where does this leave the investigation. now under new gets provocative involved. there's objective fact it takes on europe's refugee crisis but the director missed the opening night two thousand kilometers away. under house arrest. i'm phil gayle welcome to the program. crash investigators have recovered the black

boxes from an ethiopian airlines flight that crashed outside. sunday morning the boeing seven three seven max eight bound for nairobi went down six minutes after takeoff killing all one hundred fifty seven people on board and raising concerns about the safety of boeing's best selling new design. after daybreak red cross workers retrieve the personal items of those on board the flight . while investigators recover the wreckage. of a large crater marks the spot of impact a cattle farmer who was heading to the field witnessed the crash. i heard this big noise. the village said it was a plane crash and we rushed to the site. there was so much smoke that we couldn't even see the plane parts of it were does integrating and exploding so we couldn't

get any closer. ethiopian authorities are leading the search aided by the u.s. kenya and others as the country held a day of mourning the airline announced they were grounding their seven three seven max fleet other countries are following suit because the same boeing model crashed just five months ago in indonesia. the victims of sunday's accident include people from thirty five countries in nairobi the united nations environment assembly paid tribute to their colleagues who died on the way to the conference. to be more on let us to be frank that i want. to travel and work far from their homes and local ones who have made a better place to live. do you know that nation's opie's at nairobi is ready to support all those by this tragedy the crash has affected people across the world
5:03 pm
and they are hoping the investigation will tell them why their loved ones didn't make it home. let's go to nairobi or they will find a doctor corresponded to melody. welcome melody so a day what is the mood that yes i'm here at the airport where the fight three zero two was expected to arrive yesterday of course it didn't and here as well as in the rest of the city you can really feel that all of kenya is mourning asking the question what happened we've been waiting for updates all day long but the has been very little information because there hasn't been a major development we have learned though that the families will be told later this week when the bodies of their loved ones can be returned and buried and of course the two black boxes have been found in ethiopia so now that those data recorders have been recovered what happens next. yes
5:04 pm
they have been recovered that was the flight data recorder and the voice recorder from the cockpit but an official told us that he is not sure how much information can actually be retrieved from them because they are partly damaged international forensic experts will be helping but the investigation in the meantime as you've heard in our report earlier if you can and as well as other and have grounded the boeing seven three seven max and until we know what caused the crash a melody we're learning more now about the people i'm bored. information is trickling in on the people who were on the plane or who were part of this tragic accident who died some of them for example ugandan christine she was a police commissioner under the banner of the african union mission in somalia and colleagues called her a very important part of the force who was always loving her job very dedicated we

also had a german pastor on board his cause his name was norman tenders he died at fifty one years old he was on his way to the u.n. environment summit and cedric. who was kenyan was on his way to nairobi because the mother of his fiance had died and these really are just a few of the personal stories behind the numbers. the nairobi airport i think you. let's get more from peter blair's aviation analyst christopher coke a welcome christopher we'll start with the two black boxes that have been recovered what do they record what are they likely to reveal their true devices first there is the voice recorder that records all the noise all but is being said on the flight deck and now analyzing this should be fairly easy and then there's the flight data recorder that records hundreds of sets of data of the flight itself
5:06 pm
once the plane leaves its parking position so that means speed altitude trimming direction all of these all of these. criteria and so first they need to be determined which of these data sets is still extractable from from the recorder and then once that happens the recorders apparently are damaged the it is damaged the recorders are built to withstand even a high velocity impact and even if they are damaged they don't is still usable usually the last ones you have when you have to state you know you need to determine whether the data that you have adds up to a plausible picture of what actually happened on that plane so my guess is it will take a couple weeks and tell us about the seven three seven max a relatively new model very popular but this is not its first accident it's not its
5:07 pm
first accident this exact type of airplane has crashed only a couple of months ago on a lion air flight where there were problems with a mel farm standing automation system automated flying system that overrode the pilot's. determination to pull the nose up of the plane the system forced it to go down and ultimately crashing into the ocean nevertheless the seven three seven max is a highly popular plane is much. much sought after by airlines that has a backlog of five thousand aircraft at boeing so this is by far more than any other plane boeing has on offer because and that is one of the reasons it is fitted with a new generation of engines that are much more fuel saving which is very important these days but now we've heard that china indonesia and ethiopia have an hour so they will ground vacillate what does this mean for the boeing briefly if you like it is a difficult time any time a plane crashes and there's fatalities this is difficult for boeing with the

questions arising whether this is a reoccurring problem that has caused this crash this is a real crisis christopher thank you so much now here's some of the other stories making news around the world u.s. president donald trump's twenty twenty budget proposal has been delivered to capitol hill he's seeking eight point six billion dollars for his mexico border wall project as well as increased spending on defense is also looking for big cuts to defense spending like environmental and welfare programs. japan is marking the eighth anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that struck its north east in twenty eleven officials and members of the imperial family attended a memorial service in tokyo the disaster killed more than eight hundred thousand people caused a nuclear meltdown at the fukushima power station. spain has been marking the fiftieth anniversary of the terrorist attacks that killed one hundred ninety three people in the capital madrid prime minister pedro sanchez and city officials later

bangkok you told us more about the decision to release it. well it seems to me what's behind that decision is a letter by the indonesian government to the malaysian attorney general weighing in on city isis behalf saying that the sea thought she was part of a reality show she was playing a prank also citing the long standing and good relations between the two countries and placing the blame squarely on north korea saying that the north korean intelligence services made. their tool and that's why they are asking the malaysian attorney general to reconsider which he apparently did because the charges were dropped she wasn't acquitted but she was released but that means is that the trial could be taken up again if new evidence were to emerge for example but she is allowed to travel to indonesia so it seems to be that's it for her. bustin haas

agreed for saying that ten years ago today a seventeen year old gunman there in the small town of vin and down in southwestern germany stormed into his former high school and opened fire on students and teachers killing fifteen people and then turning the gun on himself it was a rare and shocking act of violence here in germany which has seen only three school mass shootings since the one nine hundred sixty s. a decade later relatives and survivors of it and then still bad the emotional scars and many of them are now calling for tighter gun controls. visiting the place where her daughter was gunned down ten years ago is still incredibly difficult for gisela meyer the day she heard the news of her daughter's death in the high school her life changed forever. if my world just fell apart it pulled the ground out from under my feet i absolutely couldn't grasp what happened and it took months for my to understand that she was done i kept resisting the very thought of it.

her daughter nino was one of fifteen victims that a gunman shot at the school and during his askin. she was a student teacher in the school and buried under twenty five. today this memorial room pays tribute to those who lost their lives in this former classroom the gunman shot the students at random. gisela meyers active in the against violence in schools foundation to prevent such acts from ever happening again. one small step forward is stricter laws on private individuals storing firearms. trauma counselor i'll bet basinger was one of the first on the scene after the shooting he helps students who had lived through the horrific experience process their emotions. i try to talk with them so they could process what they went through. that's a principle of trauma counseling encourage people to express their feelings because

it's far more harmful to suppress them to let them cry and scream if they need to see those winds. in the decade since the shooting security measures in the school have been stepped up all doors are more difficult to open from the outside and teachers try to identify challenging students early on. the mission for example we have a school social worker who's deeply involved in the school we have a project name but social cohesion and getting along with others. relatives of the victims try to somehow to go on with their lives. meyer has finally managed to find some inner peace. talk this point child the shooter came across as a monster but he was really just a young boy full of it because he didn't have the life that others and that image of him really helps me understand what made him commit such an evil as.

this memorial called the broken ring symbolizes the suffering in winnenden a brutal cut a contemplate of place and the shadow of a fateful day. he stood german city of cabinets made international headlines last year after a series of demonstrations by the far right now the city is back in the spotlight after football fans commemorated a local neo nazi and. rest in peace tommy read the banner behind which some four thousand spectators devoted a moment of silence to a recently deceased local fan thomas heller was responsible for stadium security in kenneth's until two thousand and six he was also a known neo nazi and the founder of the group who now an abbreviation that stands for hooligans nazis racists the group has operated openly inside the stadium in the past. i i. i can meet striker daniel

france celebrated his goal on saturday by sprinting to the bench and holding aloft a t. shirt bearing the slogan support your local who was the motif is a favorite of the far right in germany. the club has fined for on but defended the pre-match moments of silence claiming it was in no way an indorsement of thomas howlers views or behaviors but the local authority in chemist's owner of the stadium in which saturday's controversial memorial took place was quick to condemn the proceedings it announced in a statement commits is and remains a cosmopolitan tolerant and peaceful city we def or distance ourselves explicitly from all racist and far right actions and statements still endeavors to create a cosmopolitan image of candidates were dealt a serious setback on saturday. let's get more on this rumor over mooted from date of. so how could something like this happen well sadly this shows the influence
5:18 pm
that hooligan group has over his local football club and indeed an influence that now seems to be tearing the club apart it does seem that some officials some club representatives at least facilitated this tribute we had the picture of thomas hollow going up on the big screen the stadium announcer called the minute's silence and indeed the first statement that the club put out after the tribute they defended it they said it was not about the politics it's about the fan it's about a human being but now we're seeing that narrative from the club flip people have been removed from from their positions the club administrator has said we have to clarify how this could happen and also said actually the club the staff were threatened with riots by fans will have to wait and see whether that is confirmed but it does certainly say that as some club representatives took part for one reason or another in this tribute as you saw in the report there one of the one of the players holding up. some resignations and investigation what are the

consequences of receiving well the resignation was the c.e.o. of the club thomas which is already a pretty big step of course that was the for the weekend was even now on sunday so clearly action has been taken fairly quickly that now we've also seen the stadium announcer and employee of the club fired to and on top of the fan representative is also a city councilor with the social democrat party she has been removed from her position at the club after posting on social media a message of condolence for thomas hala the northeast football union is also invested in message at the club and so we could see more consequences for then in the regional league that they just play and and i think we can expect the fallout to go on for much longer. this is on top of not having a particularly savory reputation outside the city so exactly i'm reminded immediately of the anti my group. marches that took place in the city of kenya's last year and club. groups were involved in mobilizing people for those marches
5:20 pm
well thomas tallis himself was allegedly involved in some of the riots that took place around this what we're seeing is i think a reflection of social issues of this is being portrayed in the stadium here and we have with the government said in the report there that they want to project an image of tolerance about the city of candidates but i don't think sentiments like this are limited to say people in state in a limited fang graves i think it's something that extends beyond that into society in kenneth's and so that really needs to be dealt with as much as the club itself and as much as the. over would if indeed abuse spoke to thank you for action on the pitch and two teams heading in opposite directions in germany met in hanover on sunday by leverkusen have been flying over the last six weeks i have mother nature gave them a helping hand in their efforts to stay in the running for a top four finish. amid the blizzard in hanover some home fans didn't look too keen to get this one started. and even live

a couzin flying under peter boss seemed as though they'd rather be elsewhere. but everyone loves it when they break the orange ball on a snow day especially it seems kevin fallen to maybe one nil and thirty minutes after answer couldn't handle a slippery shot after a brief stoppage to clear the lines fall and was at it again lifting the ball over the snow and over to make it to no one twenty minutes. it might have cleared the lines but nobody had managed to clear the penalty area. to get chief and to his chagrin. tough time so the boxes cleared away no. the japanese did eventually play his part in a goal setting up unit us to cut the deficit on fifty one minutes and the whole sensationally leveled in seventy three minutes after mitchell visor put through his own net but one overs tale of war this season was to continue as i have it sealed
