lives and a second mosque in the suburb of lynwood where several more fatalities were reported police say a man in his late twenty's has been charged with murder and will appear in court on saturday prime minister just into our day and has called it one of new zealand's darkest days world leaders have joined in condemning the attack in a place where gun violence is relatively rare. in new zealand now a country on edge. a city on lockdown. health officials have activated mass casualty plans. the carnage unfolded at the busiest of times the biggest mosque in the country worshipers at friday prayers described a man dressed in military fatigues and armed. and he had a man and he's given the gun. and here's the address of the military and he's begun
2:03 pm
machine gun of. one and. another to get a gun. and. a what they're doing and not took me here looking and not that. it is tough to shoot in. a second nearby mosque was also attacked it's not clear at the shootings were carried out by the same man the prime minister has called it one of new zealand's daucus days. it is clear that this can now only be described as a terrorist attack. from what we know if it does appear to have being well planned two explosive devices attached to such speaks of the coasts have now been found and they have been disarmed. a driver filmed the moment police caught the man believed to be the terror suspect his car forced off the road we'll still spending he has been identified as an australian citizen with

a trail of far right extremist views police say they are still determining if anyone else was involved. three other people were apprehended we believe one of those persons. who was and was at the same my have had nothing to do with this incident. and the two other people. began a position of foreigners in the general we are working through to understand. elsewhere a grieving community grapples with its own for answers. you don't think something like this could happen in new zealand well in. places where such a small community was so kind and loving understand why someone would hurt us. in such a way. like an animal like why would you treat us like that we we've done nothing
2:05 pm
and i'm some really stupid for not just a huge loss of life today i don't know if i'm going to be feeling safe walking by myself wearing my headscarf and i've never felt that way. but a sense that things may never be the same again. the. short while ago i spoke to samantha early she's in christ church she give us more details about the situation there and how new zealand has been coping with this instead. well a men is just show up here tomorrow in the christchurch district court on a charge of murder and we'll find out more about there being the prime minister just in and doing he described this as a terrorist attack she says none of the f.b.i. that are currently in custody or in total or free a chill additional source. at any number is asked before the police have apparently

. much. new zealand is on high alert how are security and emergency services dealing with the situation. muse the whole country's very much on alert security. services have advised unmasks who was there. a police presence in masks throughout the country and. there's also been. just even ones on high alert they were there with a response to. gear up in the land area and another city in the not islands and it just shows how on earth our needs into an alert people are through the country that wasn't thought to be now related to the question which incident but it just shows that everyone's in the eighteenth and on high alert in their place and have really mobilized the people there the mosques that were targeted
2:07 pm
here at work are in christ church of course how are the people there the people in christchurch coping with this. kind of a home studies in shark it really isn't shark. it is just actually unbelievable that this could happen here and the whole city you know what was on lockdown really work for quite a few hours. the children were loudly going to lead to the hospital and at. buildings in the central city there was a sense made their way home in most people i would imagine are just keeping our eyes on muscat named after a media and just expressed fear actually shock and dismay that something like this could happen here in new zealand in muslim community this must be devastating for them. he is the muslim community in new zealand is quite a small community. roughly fifty thousand based on the last
2:08 pm
census data that we have and that required to about one percent of the population so for a small community questions of this community saved. it resists to measure about a quarter of the people who are muslims in new zealand were born here and the risks from all over the world are also quite a large number of the written g. and migrant community who are in. a part of the muslim community so. just real sharp there's this community has been targeted here. a minister was. going much one to improvise. this this isn't new zealand this isn't new zealand and his people are about it and you will see a saying who really am expressions of that sort of solidarity on social media and you're just people wanting to support the fellow citizens and. make clear that.
2:09 pm
the sort of the text. that the those sort of any hundred members behind of the text don't belong in new zealand that was the very strong message that the prime minister gave the country earlier condemning really god's motives behind as a text. to early in christ church thank you very much. on has emerged that one of the suspects in custody in connection with the mosque shootings is australian war and let's cross over now to roger maynard a journalist who joins us from sydney australia roger the australian prime minister has since confirmed that one of those under arrest is from australia what we know about him well we know he is twenty eight years old he comes from a liril town of ruston any and all the news well as which is two or three hundred miles north of sydney and he's been the you know he was looking that up until a few years ago working at
2:10 pm
a local gym apparently where the gym operator said there was no indication of in a radical is and look at some of those vehicle or are in any way reactionary so it's all a bit of a surprise really either this is happened he went away in twenty eleven he said he was going to travel for a couple of years and he clearly ended up in new zealand and one of the happened to him along the way as always he turned his mind and he was joined up with other radicals on this particular occasion to carry out this terrible attack but he was the man we believe actually filmed the footage going to be the last in christ church today that terrifying footage which has is so awful that it hasn't been shown anywhere on the television as i understand it and he he he then turned the camera or his own face when he was driving to the mosque to identify themselves you know he's clearly he wanted his moment of fame if you like and he
2:11 pm
he's not in police custody of course please be charged with murder there was truly and government officials have been commenting on these attacks so what have they been saying. well they also have prime minister at scott morrison has been quite vocal about it he described talent as a radical right wing extremist terrorist he a muslim with the as well as the mention the word terrorism in this whole sorry sorry saga and he can see that it was a terrorist act nearly since the work he says i'm appalled and sickened by what happened to. all those going very close relationship jail straight in new zealand and the fact that the australian has been involved in the. terrorist attack is a great investment the australians in many ways but you know it's a sad indictment i suppose that this is the sort of thing that happens today so the australian suspect is described as
2:12 pm
a rightwing extremist tell us about right wing extremist movements in australia and new zealand how influential are they. well look there's always been a perception that the australian bush the countryside the rural areas have a right wing tendency but no more so than many other countries where there's a strong sense of national identity and national culture and a desire to hold on to the culture and certainly we've seen the rise of a certain to see a reactionary a right wing part is over the past ten or twenty years it was the the formation of the one nation you found the body pauline hanson who was famous for the dress in the issue of asian immigration in australia and you know on the other hand we've seen a fair bit of islamophobia in australia too in recent years partly in the wake of the terrorist attacks muslim terrorist attacks carried out you know australian in
2:13 pm
recent years so whether terror was influenced by or by these attacks in any way or water but we just don't know but in the hopefully we'll get more of a sense of what actually happened what is thinking was in the days and weeks ahead roger thank you so much for your insights roger maynard there a journalist in sydney australia. well to talk more about how this is going down in australia i'm joined here by anthony howard from g.w. news who himself is from australia tell us antony we've heard from governor of officials already in australia commenting on this horrible attack but what about the general citizenry what do they make of it well i think the shock and the horror as this man faces court tomorrow it once subside but it will be joined by feelings of. despair embarrassment and shame that that would applaud no matter where in the stride in pulled any this attack in any part of the world but when it's a stright or in new zealand we share a particularly close and loving relationship with i would say. it's not just joined
2:14 pm
by geographical proximity we're very close we're just across the ditch as we would say but we have a shared colonial history with four wars side by side not under the same flag but under the banner of the and the striving in useem new zealand cool so to historical top of that runs deep. we are great sporting rivals we share tried with each other we shared jokes with h. others experience it's all the way like an extended family and at this time unfortunately what they're into focus is the fact that we also share our open borders with each of the citizens we share the responsibility happily happily. of housing each of us citizens in one another's countries so there is that great shame to it of of all the people that could have done this it's in the striving in new zealand and it does cut beyond the fact it's forty nine lives lost that it's one of ours it does hit. given that the that an australian man is the main suspect in this
2:15 pm
case what questions will it raise for authorities in australia we all want to know why and when he faces corden if the next time he takes the market fund i guess it would be strange in and unrealistic to expect to get a real explanation as to why from a derived or apparently do. take as to why how he could rationally explain his actions but i think the questions will tie into something. he said in the political sense and that's how would you explain or is there any correlation between the political discourse around immigration in australia how has that in any small tiny tiny while has it in any way contributed in the mind of a divine person has that even been the beginnings of something of that the thoughts about racism hasn't led him in any small by today's actions they haas questions almost callous questions to ask the monsoon as we haven't buried the dead but as this goes forward. we ask ourselves is there any why is there anything.
2:16 pm
that we have contributed as a country in our discussions about immigration and racism to these events. australian prime minister scott morrison has spoken strongly on this tragedy he called it a right wing extremism let's listen to what he had to say and as family members with the zeal and cousins to die. we grow. we are shocked. we were appalled. and we stand here and can dame absolutely detect that could to die. by an extremist right wing volunteer asst i can confirm that the individual who was taken into custody been advised ease and australian born citizen
2:17 pm
and obviously that element of the investigation is trying to with already are involved in and i will be proceeding with their investigation which is already being stood up involving all the relevant agencies. in australia prime minister scott morrison there commenting on the attacks in new zealand the main suspect course being australian i think what do you make of the prime minister's statement and particularly the tone that he used his words are going to be monitored very closely very much and especially in the following days as the greys gives wide to the questions as to why and what the what a strike in the political discourse is done in past especially though for this conservative government in an election year and again this is it seems like a callous moment to talk about it but we're listening carefully to scott morrison to call out right wing extremism which he has not necessarily done in the past in relation to iraq when the right criticism from the left that i haven't said that is
2:18 pm
right wing extremism and that is dangerous so this was. entirely expected as a private citizen but as a prime minister not a leader of a political party he was being monitored today and will be in coming days as to what he's saying and what's the message that he's sending is he clearly making a distinction between illegal immigration and standing on a platform at this next election of we stop the boats and tough on illegal immigration by making that distinction a tough on illegal immigration and making it clear in the minds of the writings and make it clear that they are not talking about immigrants that's just illegal immigration so those statements today about right wing extremism are important in a cold out and say the timing for this election campaign that are going to make this clear and make it clear to wallace strivings that by making a clear separation between two points anthony howard w. news thank you so much. now german chancellor angela merkel has extended her sympathy to the victims of the mosque attack and their loved ones
2:19 pm
here's what she had to say it's how did this is a horrific attack on people praying and on their house of worship. this is an attack directed against muslims. it is also an attack on new zealand's democracy and on an open and tolerant society. we share these values with new zealand and we share their horror and condemnation of this terrible attack. this other world leaders have also been quick to condemn the terrorist attack and mourn the victims french president emanuel not calling also sending his condolences our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones be in his crimes against the mosques of christ church in new zealand he writes friends stands up against all forms of extremism and works with its partners against terrorism across the world.
2:20 pm
pakistani prime minister imran khan also expressing shock saying in a tweet that he strongly condemns the terrorist attack this reaffirms what we've always maintained he tweets that terrorism does not have a religion prayers go to the victims and their families. and we'll have more on the new zealand terror attack later for you in this bulletin you are watching d.w. news still to come skipping school for action against global warming students worldwide joined the fridays for future climate movement we'll talk to our correspondents following protests in the early christians. first let's check up on some other stories making headlines around the world today algerians have taken to the streets for more protests against longtime president sees beautifully deep backtracked on his decision to stand for a fifth term but he stopped short of stepping down protesters say the eighty two

a russian american team three astronauts has successfully docked at the international space station back in october two of them had their journey into space cut short when a technical problem on their soyuz rocket led to the flight being aborted two minutes after launch yesterday will conduct various experiments during their stay aboard the international space. students in an estimated one hundred countries around the world are out on strike today joining this girl behind me swedish climate activist gratitude she started a movement demanding action on climate change called fridays for a future that movement has inspired schoolchildren around the world today is the biggest day yet it seems for her and the young activists who have followed her lead i don't think you know other. delis youngest were out in force india's capital is one of a thousand cities where schoolchildren planned protests against grown up in action
2:23 pm
on climate change sparked in part by swedish sixteen year old greats are too unbearable i support that and like she is the only one who took initiative in sudan and because all five of you got to know about this just hand me out of supporting her benefits only the children we're joined by some with a few more years of breathing delis infamous smaug sometimes described as deadly older protesters have all but given up on their own generation and are looking to the next for a solution. now to make on forward it's not them it's their future we have ruined it for them and i have no hope from our generation also i mean even if we get the government even if it isn't. in hong kong the young generation borrowed chance from the old making their point clear act on climate change now deny the deniers they said. in berlin young people were practically bouncing off walls and trees students mostly and parent teacher or adult activist thrilled to be
2:24 pm
out of their normal friday routine and they hoped making a difference. committing them to finally where it all started great herself was on stage in stockholm. motivating those who've taken her lead but reminding them the issue is the climate not the young woman who started a movement. let's go directly to two of those cities where young protesters have been taking to the streets today and for many months many weeks at least i'm joined now by d.w. correspondents rebecca rivers in brussels and kate brady in berlin let's start with you kate so what's the atmosphere like at the berlin march for climate protection and what are the protesters demanding. as can see after six hours out on the streets today here in berlin the demonstration here behind me is
2:25 pm
slowly dying down many children headed home for the weekend but there was much excitement everyone was in really great spirits earlier today but hidden behind all the excitement and the great vibes coming out of this demonstration today is this first ration which we're seeing towards both previous generations as well as politicians and that is who this demonstration is aimed to still see the environment ministry here behind me and these children that took to the streets here in berlin today want to see action and one of the main issues here specifically for germany is the phase out of coal fired energy now at the moment the german government plans to phase out coal fired energy by twenty thirty eight of the students who were on the streets today that simply isn't soon. rebecca in brussels we understand that the participants of the fridays for future movement they have different demands regarding climate protection depending on the countries
2:26 pm
where they are what's the belgian perspective. that's right terry but i would have to say that today's protest is very much about the international perspective here in belgium i've been speaking to a lot of people here today they say there's nothing says if you can belgian spilled them so much that they're looking for but it's more this they want all the e.u. governments to be maintaining the agreement that was struck by all the european countries in paris the paris climate agreement they say countries simply haven't been doing enough there's a real call to change here as i get mystere is one i'm really positive but as kate was saying on also a frustration a lot of the people i've spoken to a saying that they're just tired of inaction nothing has been happening here and they're really hoping that. there's a big summit summit of a vegas here next week climate will be on that agenda and they're really hoping that days like today are really going to push those ladies to actually make some
2:27 pm
change. many of the young people out on the streets there are skipping school how are schools and politicians reacting to that fact what do they make of it starting with you rebecca. yeah well you know there is growing support amongst politicians. and belgian politicians. one last month actually one environment minutes in does indeed have to stand down when he had made public announcement that he got intelligence to say that these protests were a conspiracy which was in fact falls and he had to stand down but apart from him there's been a lot more support and in terms of schools that's really been growing as well support i talked to people here today that said when the protests began and we should be there they were not the schools were not that most schools were not that supportive but now they're actually giving the time off to the students but the
2:28 pm
students are having to make up those hours so but when the people i've spoken to it seems that the support is growing. back to you in berlin kate so it's obvious that young people around the world are developing a strong awareness of climate issues it's not just young people of course but they are really going up into the into the streets all this how much does this friday's for future movement have how much traction do you think it has moving forward. but i think if you look at how the figures have been the number of students who have been turning out in the streets now only here in berlin but across germany over the past few weeks and they just continue to grow we saw around ten thousand students hit the streets in the berlin today similar numbers also in frankfurt in southwestern germany and as those numbers continue to increase are sending a very clear message to politicians and that until we see so many media action we
2:29 pm
will not be returning to school on fridays and while that is still the case i can see the numbers continuing to grow and clearly this winter weather which they've been facing every week since they took to the streets here in germany two months ago clearly isn't putting demonstrators off and i have a feeling this will be the last large kate brady in berlin for us there in brussels rebecca ritter's thank you both. well the ball appears to be back in the european union's court after the british parliament voted to delay its departure from the block ball makers voted strongly in favor of asking the e.u. to postpone brags of her lease three months but any delay still has to be approved by all twenty seven remaining e.u. countries. a third night a third vote and a firm decision to put the brakes on bricks that. the eyes of the right four hundred twelve the nose for the left two hundred two so they are inside it the ayes
