muslim community leaders that mosques will receive police protection. while new zealanders are still trying to come to terms with the country's worst ever mass shooting our correspondent christ church spoke to some of the people mourning. tributes around the city are piling ever higher. as grief sets in new zealanders are finding ways to express their sorrow over a massacre in their muslim community. police are sweeping the area around the mosque as a team of officers elsewhere work to identify the victims. for now it's still a crime scene. but police are picking up flowers to take closer to our mosque where dozens of people were slaughtered during their friday prayers. but.

on the other side of the park christians have gathered to pray for their muslim neighbors. one woman has brought an art project meant to show the bond between all faiths. so this is that works that i did such a day for some petrik stay and i wanted to. make something for the whole community to acknowledge is saving us and sore. and and feeling of. connection with the muslim community. this man has found another way to show his support had quite a few people come and have coffees and hugs it's been nice i guess it's nice to see people just showing up in showing their support and solidarity. which is i think

what new zealand is all about being welcoming and loving and peaceful people the support for the victims is overwhelming most here are satisfied with the government's response to the murders but they want to know how the suspect slips through the cracks they say more needs to be done to address racism and to combat far right radicalization the way we can help people who already feel like that but we can at least try and stop the younger ones from work occasionally us if we can. the message here is clear that hate has no place in new zealand. well earlier we spoke to correspondent clare richardson who filed that report from christ church and we asked her what new zealand prime minister just send our john has been doing to support victims' relatives and to raise. sure the country's muslim community she was here in christ church meeting of both the victims and leading members of the muslim community she then went on to the capital wellington where she has been

meeting muslims there as well and she is doing everything she can to put these communities mind at ease firstly she has offered continuing police protection for their mosques so that they can continue to pray at their places of worship without fear i she has also made clear that these individuals affected are eligible for a ten thousand dollars grant to cover the cost of funerals and said that immigration status will not be a factor in whether or not people can receive she said there will be additional funding to help these people it down the road available as well now the one thing that many people in the muslim community are very upset about here is the question of what to do with their dad in the muslim faith it's very important that bodies are buried as quickly as possible but certainly within twenty four hours and obviously that mark has long passed so a lot of people are particularly distressed over this issue. and that was our correspondent claire richardson speaking earlier to us from christ church well the

killings in christ church are once again drawing attention to the role of social media in spreading hate the suspects live streamed his attack on facebook the company remove the video shortly after the attack but not before it had been contacted and shared by others this morning facebook revealed the scale of the videos reach writing on twitter that in the first twenty four hours it had removed one point five million videos of the attack globally of which one point two million were blocked at upload the company said it's removing all edited versions of the video as well. w.'s digital reporter henchman lee is here in the studio with me to talk a bit more about this so is that even possible for facebook to remove every single copy of this video i think this is not impossible but it is very difficult we know that facebook has been working around the clock to remove copies
4:07 pm
about video so right now it has an internal database of the blocked video and so the system can automatically detect and remove copies of those attack media once it gets uploaded. so far so good however there is a big problem with the system it is flawed so if they used to make some changes to that video let's say by adding a watch unlock them the system could be tracked and that you say could theoretically still be able to upload the video onto facebook so it's that's why it makes it so difficult to wipe off the video completely once it's been recorded and uploaded for multiple times well the prime minister of new zealand just in the audience said she wants answers from social media giants over this live streaming of that attack we have a clip let's have a listen i've had some context. from share of same big i haven't spoken to her directly but she has reached out. and acknowledgement of what
4:08 pm
has occurred here in new zealand and this is an issue that i will look to be discussing directly with facebook. all right so the prime minister of new zealand says she intends to talk to facebook about this there are many others there are saying these social media platforms have to be accountable but how is it possible to make them accountable i guess my answer to this will be pressure more pressure from the government more pressure from the consumer legislations have to be in place we have an example actually from germany it's about hate speech so we know that it's a big problem globally and facebook's that it did everything to combat hate speech problem people weren't seeing any changes and so in germany there was this hate speech law and it's been passed and then so rapidly facebook just hired all of a sudden it hired
4:09 pm
a lot of moderate just and it also deployed new technology to combat this problem so that's an example of how pressure could actually change a company's stands. and so we have to make facebook to prioritize that to prioritize to fight of spread of terrorists terrorism or extremist concerns and thoughts well so i guess is a question of investment investing in actual human beings who work as the moderators combing through all these videos also investing in new technologies but all of this is a question of control and controlling these social media platforms and i guess there will be pushback against that as well won't there yeah. of course too much control of the social media is not a good it's not a good thing it could be an infringement of our freedoms however facebook has two billion active if users we have to keep in mind. and so it has an enormous reach
4:10 pm
so off easily social media sites like facebook needs to do more to combat this problem i guess is just like we can compare this to c.c.t.v. like on the streets. do you want more c.c.t.v. like we can feel savior of course but it could be an infringement of our privacy so we have to really find a balance between control and freedom and that's a very difficult balance to find. digital reporter hank finally thank you so much thanks. all right let's take a look now at some of the other stories making news around the world in the occupied west bank a man believed to be a palestinian has shot and killed an israeli and wounded two others one of them critically the assailant reportedly grabbed a gun from a soldier at a highway junction near the settlement of arielle israel's military says troops are still searching for the gunmen. venezuelan opposition leader won by doe has embarked on a new stage of his campaign to oust president nicolas maduro joe is beginning
