a military coup five years ago he wanted voters to keep him on as prime minister promising stability he faced the opposition type party which raised questions about the fairness of the poll saying the rules favored the military. let's bring in correspondent best in heartache he joins us from bangkok. bustin vote counting has started do you have any indication about preliminary results at this point. michael at the moment some twenty percent of the votes have been counted and that's changing by the minute of course because all over the country in the polling station the election helpers are at the moment counting the votes and it seems like it's an extremely close race between the two a tie party which is the party of former prime minister young sheena was and that is a party group that's affiliated with the with the cinnabon family and that has won

every election since two thousand and ten here in thailand and it's just a close race with them the military party and that's a bit of a surprise because everyone expected the prototype party to be much stronger but of course this is all subject to change because only one fifth of the votes have been avin counted so far now if this if this plays out the way that it looks right now the question is which party are they going to form a coalition with and what what are the majority going to be like it looks unlikely that the military party is going to have a majority to elect the next prime minister but they're not going to have a majority to pass legislation in the lower house of parliament and that could lead to a political deadlock michael boston as you know regardless of how the voting turns out you've been reporting on this for hours the military change the constitution in order to try in their power no matter the results so what are voters based on what
2:04 pm
you're seeing on the ground what are they hoping for. well i think a lot of voters today were excited that they got to go out and got to vote again at all because they got something that they haven't been able to do in in more than five years in the election the last election back in two thousand and fourteen they were canceled afterwards the last elections that counted were back in two thousand and eleven and for the last five years or so by then have been ruled by a military victory dictatorship and i think that the people were just tired of that and you can you can get out when you look at. the hi everyone back to turnout of more than eighty percent the election commission thing eighty seven percent countrywide but only we were at before they had a turnout something between seventy five and an eighty percent but you do that here are hungry back to the democratic right and they're hungry for change michael. in

bangkok thank you. to scandinavia now a dramatic rescue mission is underway in southern norway crews have been racing to bring cruise ship passengers to safety after their boat was stranded in dangerous waters the ship broke down on saturday with over a thousand passengers on board efforts are being made to tow the vessel to land but the ship stranding has already led to harrowing moments for passengers. passengers rushed to shield themselves from sliding furniture and falling ceiling panels as heaving waves tossed the cruise ship from side to side some said those waves that smashed windows and sent cold sea water gushing in. elsewhere on board the mostly british and american travelers could do nothing but sit and wait for their turn to be airlifted to safety. i made winds of nearly ninety kilometers per hour and waves over eight meters high the viking sky

sent out a mayday call early on saturday afternoon it had suffered engine failure and was beginning to drift towards the rocky shore fearing the ship would run aground the crew managed to anchor in the bay an area known since viking times is treacherously difficult to navigate. the cult and of course it will not you this is clearly a serious situation this is a cruise ship with one thousand three hundred passengers on board is stuck in one of the north and europe's would stretches of water scattered with reefs so this is a serious situation as it will show him the authority is mobilized five helicopters for the operation though some had to be diverted to help a second vessel nearby the freighter with a crew of nine also suffered engine failure delaying the cruise ship airlift. rescue passengers have been brought to a reception center on land clearly this was not the kind of adventure they'd had in mind when they booked their cruise. to refresh. very frightening we

were not on the helicopter with the sling the two of us together and it was quite scary the severe weather is preventing rescue workers from using smaller boats to take passengers ashore so authorities now aim to tow the cruise ship itself and the hundreds of passengers still aboard. a short while ago we got the latest on the rescue operation from the einar knutson he's with the joint rescue coordination center for some of southern norway and we just saw him in the report we asked him how the operation has been unfolding. well it's going according to plan. money to. ship the rolls. on its know how doing the old. playschool. which is only one thing coast of norway. the captain. to stop the immigration for the time being he will drop off that

minister theresa may is coming under fresh pressure over her handling of bracks it needed including the sunday times say that may's own cabinet is plotting to oust her while there was little sign of that pressure as may visit in church with her husband this morning she's reportedly planning a last ditch attempt to win support among lawmakers for her bret's a deal which parliament has rejected twice. for more on that i'm joined now by correspondent bergant mosse in london made faces increasing pressure to resign very good how likely is that to happen. anyone's guess at the moment but to reason mase authority is really draining again way by the day or even by the hour so there is no formal process that can easily be involved in getting her and i was sitting how because there at the conservative party they'd
2:10 pm
say vote of no confidence of conservative m.p.'s and that's cannot be done because it has already been done less than a year ago but of course if the cabinet really wanted to get rid of for they and they would resign on mass and basically get together and just put pressure on how then it would be very difficult for hot to press on we know that there are cabinet members who are hoping that this will happen there's also backbenchers who are trying to put pressure on tourism eight to go so far she's been extraordinarily resilient there were many moments where she has faced a similar situation and most people i think would have really understood if she had resigned but she has toughened it out and the question is would she survive next week but clarify this how would may stepping down actually solve the problem. yes because the country is in
2:11 pm
a fundamental crisis over breck's it and really it hasn't been resolved the parliamentarians as well as the people in london are really fundamentally opposed to each other no to reason made as problem was that she hasn't tried hard enough to build some sort of consensus behind have breaks a plan she has ploughed through and has negotiated this deal with the european union but she has had her red lines and these red lines were her only go she a shing objectives and now it becomes clear that what reason may was trying to achieve is just incredibly unpopular in column and so now she faces this dilemma but there are still some who are loyal to her and who are hoping that her deal will get through at the eleventh hour let's hear what philip hammond the chancellor had to say to all this in just over two weeks' time we run the risk of facing a very stark choice between leaving me with no deal or not leaving the you are tall
2:12 pm
it is essential that we get a deal done that's the problem that series i'm a has that whole government has that really time is running out it's now the eleventh of april where the e.u. has said you have to get your act together or you are out and you're out without a deal and that's for many parliamentarians for businesses as well and absolute horror scenario because it would have severe implications for for mainly for business for medical supplies so a lot of people are incredibly scared of that situation based on what you're hearing burger what is likely to happen here. this issue ation is really evolving by the hour so hard to give any predictions but i think that next week parliamentarians in the house of commons will try and have
2:13 pm
find somehow a common ground which is incredibly difficult because people are also opposed to each other's views but that's really the only charms i think that they have that they find some sort of alternative vision possibly some softer bragg's it than the one that's reason maze and visiting and that they hammer out some sort of course in palm and then the question is whether that's a reason may will still be there to an act this deal might or might not be approved by parliament if it doesn't get approved i think there is no other choice than asking for another extension from the european union and then again we are unsure to territory because we don't know whether the european union will even grant that say anything is really up in the air at the moment that's our burgard mosque in london thank you burka now to some other news making making news around the world members of australia and new zealand's indigenous communities have come together in
