this is d.w. news live from berlin the u.s. president claims vindication there was no good more drug sure the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard there was no collusion with the russians donald trump is triumphant after a probe by the u.s. special counsel concludes that there was no evidence that trump campaign colluded with russia to influence the twenty sixteen presidential vote but completely off the hook we'll get analysis from our correspondent in washington also coming up the

stricken cruise ship viking sky reaches shore safely tonight hundred passengers and crew who were still on course or find a harrowing night in stormy conditions off norway's coast hundreds of people were airlifted to safety on the ship are still a taxi. omarion evanston welcome to the program no collusion no obstruction complete and total exoneration that's what president donald trump tweeted after the justice department released a summary of the report by a special counsel robert muller here are two crucial passages from that summary provided by attorney general william bar. the special counsel's investigation did not find that the trump campaign or anyone associated with it conspired or court

made it with russia and its efforts to influence the twenty sixteen u.s. presidential election deputy attorney general rod rosenstein and i have concluded that the evidence developed during the special counsel's investigation is not sufficient to establish that the president committed an obstruction of justice offense summary also stays that while the report does not conclude that the president committed a crime it also does not exonerate him. helen humphrey is following all these developments from washington for us and she joins us now so helena what else can you tell us about this summary of robert muller's report. it was a very brief summary it was only a full page letter which we received from the attorney general we involved we imagine of course that the justice department. essential obtained a tome of documents this investigation of course from miller took over six hundred
12:03 am
days to complete but this letter says that it found no evidence of weighting collusion between donald trump his aides and russia during the twenty sixteen presidential campaign it did not draw an out right conclusion into obstruction of justice but remember that the president never actually sat down with special counsel robert mueller during this investigation for a one on one interview now mother has also said that he will not exonerate exonerate excuse me the presidential nor indict him with this report and to critics i think it will be said that he essentially passed the buck to the attorney general william barr who has said also that you know he is not indicting the president as is the recommendation of the department of justice i should say to not press charges against a sitting president but that's what we know from this document this full page brief summary now of course many calls for the full release of the long awaited motor

report well helena what's been the president's response to this. the president was uncharacteristically quiet on his top form of choice twitter over the weekend it was only once that reports that brief summary was out that we eventually every day to hear from him in person he's been in maryland go in his florida resort he came out onto the tarmac as he was repairing support his plane back to washington d.c. he clearly felt vindicated he had something to want and he did take a listen to what he had to say there was no collusion with russia the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard there was no collusion with the russian there was no ups truck here and none whatsoever. and it was a complete and total exoneration. it's a shame that our country had to go through this. to be honest it's
12:05 am
a shame that your president has had to go through this poor before i even got elected it began. and it began to illegally and hopefully somebody is going to look at the other side this was and the illegal takedown that failed and hopefully somebody is going to be looking at the other side so it's complete. exoneration no collusion no obstruction thank you very much thank you that was the president speaking as he prepares to board that plane back to washington d.c. let's do a quick fact check right off the back of what the president had to say yes the report did say that it found no collusion however and we must repeat what i said that he had not chosen to exonerate him and his findings contradicting the president's a citation of this being a total exoneration that said it was
12:06 am
a very strong statement there from the president i think it'll play out very well to his voter base to those who have long said that this was a witch hunt. but helena what about the president's critics what about to democrats what if they've been saying in response. release the money report is essentially the cut and thrust of what the democrats have to say it's really interesting to see now who is coming out and saying that we've already heard from. the senate we've also heard from elizabeth warren senator remember of course these are two people who are campaigning to be on the democratic presidential ticket so potentially we could see release the motor report or i release the report i think even becoming a key campaign issue but many democrats are now saying that they want access to every inch of this report including all of the transcripts the interviews if any wiretaps for example were allowed to take place from that grand jury they will want to comb through it themselves and one of the reasons for that is i think is because
12:07 am
gerry napal of the chairman of the house judiciary committee points out it is very difficult actually when it comes to obstruction of justice to be clear on what constitutes that so they will want to go through it themselves and they've said that they will essentially if they do not obtain access to it you subpoena power to look at those documents in the coming weeks potentially even subpoenaing the special counsel robert mueller himself. well none of that said i mean even if you know the report or the summary of the court does not say that the president is exonerated the bottom line is that the conclusion is that there was no collusion so can trump just sit back and say this was a good day and can his supporters just relax now. i suppose his backers will say that it's a good day for the president it's a good day for them let it be said that this is a land line in the sand i think
12:08 am
a moment in history when we talk about the presidency before and after the mother reports certainly he will be talking about this it's been indications from him and he will be saying to his detractors that he was the target of a big hoax a witch hunt and he will mobilize that way twenty twenty twenty twenty campaign message going forward saying look what they did to me but i think we have to now look more into that report and understand you know exactly what was uncovered whether it be criminal activity which of course they have said does not exist but potentially misdemeanors which do not reflect well on the president helen humphrey reporting from washington we thank you very much for that. let's get you up to speed now on some of the other stories making news around the world. thailand's first election in five years looks headed for a surprise outcome but most of the votes counted the military supported party led
