the people off the streets because we're tired of this dictatorship. taking a stand global news that matters. made for mines. this is g.w. news live from berlin tonight israel striking back after a rocket fire from gaza. israeli warplanes level and alleged hamas headquarters in gaza city after a rocket attack moved several people near tel aviv prime minister benjamin netanyahu saying that his country is responding to wanton aggression and in
9:01 pm
a move that could further inflame tensions in the middle east the trump administration formally recognizing israel's control over the occupied golan heights the move reverses fifteen years of u.s. foreign policy. for more on that story from washington and in jerusalem plus teresa mayes the latest bread simply falling on deaf ears prime minister tells lawmakers and she does not yet have the support to put her divorce still up for a third parliamentary vote now lawmakers are preparing for a measure that could see parliament take control of the board said process. i bring goff to our viewers on p.b.s. in the united states and all the around the world welcome we begin with those soaring tensions between. in israel and gaza tonight israeli warplanes striking
9:02 pm
targets across the gaza strip including the offices of hamas leaders is male i mean the strikes are in retaliation for a surprise rocket attack watch from gaza that left several wounded near tell of the militants in gaza have responded to the israeli airstrikes with a fresh round of rockets. the bombing began at nightfall. the israel defense forces struck targets in gaza hideouts they say of hamas militants. missiles destroyed a multi-story building scattering debris across a large part of the densely populated palestinian city. the raid was in retaliation for a rocket attack that had obliterated a residential home outside of tel aviv just twelve hours earlier. israel said that rocket was launched by hamas the militant group that rules gaza.
9:03 pm
israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu was in washington monday to meet with the u.s. president he said israel is acting in self-defense israel will not tolerate this i will not tolerate this and as we speak as i told you mr president just now israel is responding forcefully to this wanton aggression. i have a simple message to israel's enemies we will do whatever we must do to defend our people and defend our state. no one was killed in the alleged palestinian rocket attack monday morning but the neighborhood outside of tel aviv was shaken. it's rare for an enemy rocket to strike so far from gaza this time one hundred twenty kilometers from its alleged launch site. the home's residents were
9:04 pm
awoken by air raid sirens and managed to flee before the rocket crashed to the roof and exploded. this is the real crisis and i just hate it when any of my family if we hadn't got to the show the time i would not be carrying my family in. the united nations has urged restraint on both sides and is working with mediators to stave off a full scale conflict. if i want to go to jerusalem our correspondent tanya kramer is on the phone and forgive me to you telling your we've got reports coming in that home loss is saying that a cease fire has been brokered with the israelis i mean that's the first report we've heard what more can you tell us. yes these are ports are coming in that egypt and egypt is trying to broker a cease fire they've done that in the past but we have no confirmation as a few yet that this will actually go into effect because over the past hour or so
9:05 pm
there have been multiple rocket attacks sirens have been sounding in the south of israel and rockets were being lunch from gaza into israel at the same time as you say it is that has launched a wide scale operation in the gaza strip there was a lot of ass types targeting buildings that ciliated with hamas or other than the patients throughout the gaza strip so we have to wait and see whether those unconfirmed food pool of office broking off the cease fire. which would not be a complete surprise because as you say egypt has mediated in conflicts between the . mosque leaders and israeli leaders before i want you to take us back to on your rocket launchers from gaza they're not unusual what was different about this particular rocket that was fired from gaza towards tel would be.
9:06 pm
quite absolutely i mean there have been market launches before but this particular one was the second longer range missile that was launched into the center of israel in this case north of tel aviv into a village. the second long greenspun in two weeks so. this on land is on the house it destroyed it completely up people way in says and i think the pressure is always high little kids are launched always respond to that very strongly about in this case also the timing is probably crucial in addition to that you know their elections in two weeks here and there's a lot of pressure on the politicians to react to this. it's not the only reason why it's spending tonight but that's also probably a pain part in that and in talking what about the u.s. president did today changing more than fifty years of u.s.
9:07 pm
foreign policy by recognizing israeli sovereignty over the occupied go on high what is that going to do to the security situation in the region. while it came a bit i mean not totally as a surprise i mean when mr trump president trump last week set out his tweets last thursday night. putting its attention that he seems it's time for u.s. policy policy to change and to recognize to golan heights now this is a move that is against international law that has been also a lot of criticism you know from countries here in that region about the new to criticism but also russia yvon have criticized syria has criticized this move and this was now formalized today by signing. this decree. and with standing next to a prime minister netanyahu for him it was
9:08 pm
a very important moment there in washington. and to so you know the golan heights are strategically very important so it's well it's a mountainous plateau it's over looking you know the taron on both sides either northern israel from which side you're looking or you can look deep inside syria so it is very important for israel to keep this territory but it certainly will raise the tensions here further. a correspondent on your grandmama story for us tonight from jerusalem tanya thank you. well back here in europe we are starting what promises to be another to multi was weekend britain's saga prime minister to resign may has conceded that she lacks the necessary support to bring her e.u. divorce plan up for a third vote now keep in mind parliament has already rejected that plan twice the prime minister today addressed parliament after holding an emergency cabinet
9:09 pm
meeting to find a way forward on bragg's it the european union has given her until april twelfth to win parliamentary backing for her deal. but it is with great regret that i have had to conclude that asking stand there is still not sufficient support in the house to bring back a deal for meaningful fate. ah i continue i continue to have discussions with colleagues across the house to build support so that we can bring the full for which this week and guarantee brants it if we cannot the government made a commitment that we would work across the house to find a majority on a way forward i was the british prime minister to resign may we want to take the story to london to be used charts of punches on the story for a speech or usual logic theresa may she's clear there. isn't enough support to bring her breaks a deal back for a third vote yet will she be able to change that will she be able to bring it back by the end of that week. well brand i'm daring to
9:10 pm
say that we haven't seen the last of her deal yet she's definitely going to try to do that because she does see things there is no alternative that she has to get it through parliament she was very humiliated last time that she try it she lost the second vote by a hundred and forty nine votes a quite a lot and she is trying to still rally the support of the northern irish the u.p.a. and the hot line breaks the tears within her party to support the deal and she's basically arguing the same that she has over the past months it's either my deal or a long extension or a no deal breck's it and nobody wants and no deal or a long extension is true we know we. are going to be working late into the evening they will get the chance to vote on what could be changes to the deal what's the. it's really remarkable what's going to happen tonight because
9:11 pm
basically trying to take over the process trying to take control of way from the government to parliament and then a two then hold so-called indicative vote on wednesday and that would mean parliament doesn't want to vote against something once but that they want to find a way forward and before something and they are going to look at several options there for example a second referendum revoking article fifty all together staying in the european union a closer relationship with the euro customs union union possibly or staying in the single market so quite a few options say that they'll be looking at probably on wednesday if they take over. but we have to keep in mind that parliament is extremely divided and the question is is there a majority forward out of this deadlock and at this point we just can't see that. but that's what you know for the public behind closed doors we understand that.
9:12 pm
prime minister over the weekend. yeah exactly the protesters behind me here every day they are quite loud at the moment you can hear them so there was talk of a coup and criticism towards may and her leadership ability the question was just within the tory party is it sensible at this point to change the leadership and i think today they came to the conclusion that it wouldn't change anything at this point but what became also clear is that criticism is rising and that two recent mase days as prime minister are numbered the question is just how long are we talking about a couple of weeks or a couple of couple of months. for the latest installment. you're watching b.w. news still to come the kenyan man who's won the title of world's best teacher we'll

9:15 pm
a massive blast. flattening nearby buildings and shattering windows almost two kilometers away. rescuers pulled this man out of the rubble of the destroyed chemical plant almost forty hours after the explosion happened the survivors hundreds of them are recovering in more than a dozen local hospitals. my injury is heavier than those of my friends i was sitting right next to the window and chance of glass from a smashed window hit me our factory had temporarily suspended production and we were attending class to study suddenly i had a bang and a huge impact right smashed the window. outside this hospital deep red cross society of china has been collecting and dispatching basic supplies for people

whose homes were destroyed by the blast and people have been lining up to help by giving blood so as you and. i found out from the news that the blast cause many casualties so i rushed over as it's not far away i'd like to make a small contribution to the people who need help in. this accident has stoked public anger further in china over the frequency of industrial accidents and safety standards the exact cause of this latest enormous explosion is still under investigation but tangy i chemical the owner of the plant has a history of violating environmentalists regulations. well here in germany the district of hilda's heart is struggling with a big measles outbreak or concerns that it could turn into a nationwide epidemic or forcing the government to consider making the measles vaccination mandatory for children lawmakers are split on their plan but schools in
9:17 pm
. they've introduced strict controls to keep the virus in check. only students who can prove they've had a measles shot are allowed to enter the school so every vaccination certificate is inspected first two other students here fell ill with the disease that's the reason for the strict control the outbreak has reignited a debate over mandatory vaccinations smiled as he said it in my view children's health as the highest priority especially the protection of children in public institutions such as daycare centers and schools and cannot i must do everything to get the vaccination rate over ninety to ninety five percent that's why i welcome this debate over mandatory vaccinations. and it's about to all so inflation in many cases children get the second required measles shot too late or not at all but the biggest occurence of those non vaccinated in germany is among adults around the age of forty in this group just sixty percent have been immunized even so the head of
9:18 pm
a prominent public health institute still doesn't recommend mandatory vaccinations . but. millions of patients in germany go to doctors and hospitals every year if they're asked about their vaccination status during those visits the immunization gap could be closed very easily. in fact. recent surveys suggest only about three percent of the german population is strongly opposed to vaccines many more people would get themselves vaccinated if the process were convenient and they had more information here in germany a new safety campaign aimed at getting cyclists to wear their helmets you know what your parents told you is getting attention for all the wrong reasons call nastiness here where's your helmet my mom told me to wear my helmet when i was a kid i remember that so it's a controversial i mean it's sense it makes sense i wear your helmet it's safe and this is a campaign by germany's transport ministry to get cyclists to do just that it's controversial though because of the way that they're going about it this campaign
9:19 pm
has been called stupid it's been called sexist those are words actually from german politicians themselves and it's really prompting actually. outrage here in germany this is the campaign it features models from the reality show germany's next top model ma slogan you can see it looks like but saves my life here when they're horizontal you always use protection brought the message here you know it's for young people who think helmets they don't look good maybe these fashion conscious young people and that's really what this campaign is supposed to be doing now it's getting a lot of outrage because they're using topless models and here's one response that we've seen online this is actually coming from germany's minister for foreign affairs you see her here she's on her bike she says hey glenn i have a helmet and i have clothes on but you don't need to be half naked model basically to be safe and to wear a helmet others in germany are calling this embarrassing they're calling this outdated and the point that they're making is look you shouldn't be sent spending government money on
9:20 pm
a campaign that features these kind of sexualized but it is going to go out of its engine is the campaign working by the i mean a campaign doesn't work of no one's paying attention that is exactly what the campaign founder would say and this is coming from the transport minister himself the minister under saying on twitter hey thanks for all this attention it's already our most successful traffic safety campaign ever great collaboration with germany's next top model saying what you said look i mean if you really need to grab people's attention bike helmets are not the easiest thing to get people's attention about but people should be paying attention proponents say the youth in germany only eight percent where a helmet when they bike adults they're not much better only twenty percent of german adults wear a bike helmet when they're outside. and you wear your yeah i do admit i do admit that help is riding a bike in germany you may want to think twice about not wearing a helmet it is not a very safe country in fact it can be dangerous at times and you may see cyclists
9:21 pm
wearing these cameras on their helmets just capture moments like these take a look at this you see more and more. these out there on on you two i will both get the video go straight to the graphic the numbers back this up these are the five most dangerous cities for cyclists in europe four of those cities are germans of london berlin is ahead of london and wondered as about twice as many people as berlin does is total serious accidents combined with cyclist deaths or lynn tops that list so look it's makes sense to put your helmet on is not always the most cool thing to do but yet a bad idea and i mean just outside here outside of our studios i mean i've seen it i don't know how many times close calls you're right it is dangerous carol thank you you know and wear your helmet. germany's national football team have offered their fans a jolt of optimism they defeated old rivals the netherlands sunday in a qualifying match for the twenty twenty european championships it was an important win for a team trying to turn over
9:22 pm
a new leaf with new players. your team lives germany are finally back to winning ways a squad containing a blend of old and new faces snatched a three two victory over the netherlands on sunday and it was youth which made the difference. from the start of the week when we first met up i had the feeling the team could go out and show their strength on the pitch. we did that. of course i felt really good at the end of the game. but truly lives decisions acts twenty fourteen world cup winners jerome batang mats hummels and thomas miller was heavily criticised but against the dutch a dreadful twenty eight team for germany was forgotten. that doesn't display with the winning goal schultz believes the squad can only get better with easy it's ahead in june it gets better route. for the two emotions and i don't score too many goals and i'm just really happy for the team. it's not easy when you have been

trying to get the film you know played with one another in matches before that so that can only improve with time. germany fans hope the new era can be built around lee really sunny who scored on sunday but was left out of school and for last year's world cup. and if you do play is young players so it's an inexperienced team with a lot still to learn but i think we played really well. i think a dozen goals a month and a little to live still has a long way to go before germany can be considered among the world's best again but for now at least there's a sense of positivity back in the camp. a real life superhero who has been doing his bit to help fix the crumbling gargoyles and buttresses of paris's notre dame cathedral the building needs a hundred million euros for a massive renovation and there he is fifty six year old who's known as the french spiderman and did his bit publicized the calls while climbing
