this is news coming to you live from berlin down to the wire in israel it's the tightest of races with both main candidates claiming victory in the election but incumbent benjamin netanyahu looks to have the edge we'll have all the latest on the first results and what they mean for the country also coming up it's almost the day good britain's three some may prepares to ask european leaders for a deal later breaks it if they refuse the u.k. could crash out of the e.u.

in two days time. they call him the trump of the tropics brazil's far right president. marks one hundred days in office look at how he's fair since taking the helm and latin america's biggest nation. plus prepare to be socked in a landmark event in science as for the first time astronomers unveil a picture of a black hole we'll explain help that was made possible by a network of telescopes. hello i'm terry march and welcome to the program israeli prime minister binyamin netanyahu looks to have secured victory in the country's general election and with most of the votes counted he's running neck and neck with his main challenger benny gantz of the centrist blue and white party but netanyahu. is in
8:02 am
a stronger position to form a coalition with the support of a number of right wing parties across live to israel in a moment but first this report. that were pyrotechnics and music for netanyahu when he took to the stage at the likud party event in the wee hours to claim victory. i am very moved that the nation of israel has once again given its trust to me. and done so for the fifth time. they have again given their trust to us and to me. it's unprecedented. when did we ever get so many seats i don't remember the good one looking for a little money go to do little. a fifth term would make netanyahu israel's
8:03 am
longest serving prime minister even surpassing the founding father of the jewish state. i have to voting ended exit polls appear to indicate a neck and neck race between netanyahu and his closest rival many cans of the centrist blue and white and i and indeed around the time netanyahu made his victory speech dance was saying the same to his supporters. in elections that loses in elections that whenas and we are the witness i but that optimism may have turned out to be premature as the night went on and vote counts came in it remains a close run thing. for the latest on the israeli election we're joined by dalia sheindlin a public opinion expert and political analyst she joins us from tel aviv danny at the election has produced a virtual tie between the parties of benjamin netanyahu and benny gantz they may
8:04 am
end up with the same number of seats in parliament and both are claiming victory is it clear who will get to lead the next government. it is absolutely not clear although it looks like it should be easier for the prime minister to form the next government mainly because the bloc of parties that identify with right wing politics is significantly bigger than the bloc of what used to be opposition parties we don't know exactly but may may well still be opposition parties which is center left and the arab parties that lock of right wing parties seems to have won so far sixty five seats out of one hundred twenty which is a clear majority however it is not clear because you know there's always a possibility that we heard a little bit more yesterday first of all the national unity government secondly i guess there's a possibility of surprise in other did in the other direction but it doesn't look that likely because the could and you know his party did appear to get just
8:05 am
slightly more votes the current tally after counting ninety seven percent of the votes is twenty six point two seven percent compared to twenty five point nine four percent for the blue and white party so it looks like they definitely are in a stronger position likud to form the next government if nessun yahoo does come out hold tall he won't have an easy time of it he's facing corruption allegations a probable indictment what can we expect from his fifth term as prime minister. well it's a little bit hard to know there is still so much up in the air yes there with relation to the indictment the attorney general has said that he will indictments on yahoo pending a hearing we don't know when that hearing will take place nor what will happen if he is in fact indicted afterwards by israeli law he is not obliged to resign if he's prime minister that the obligation to resign under indictment only holds for a minister in the government not for the prime minister so we don't know if the parties that go into coalition with him will all agree which something that he
8:06 am
would like he would like them to agree not to build the coalition if he is indicted but that very much depends on the coalition bargaining therefore we don't really know if he will continue to be prime minister for a full four year term in general four year terms are unlikely in israel and it does seem like there's a possibility there's a possibility that he would go earlier but it's simply a little bit too unpredictable to tell. what does this election result tell us about the direction that israel is headed particularly in relation to the palestinians and the search for peace in the middle east. well i must tell you that the way israel breaks down in terms of how people identify right left and center is largely around the issue of the israeli palestinian conflict and the issue of security and the fact that you know more is really identify as right wing by the majority by you know. a small but significant majority of voters of voting age
8:07 am
that is clearly reflected in these in the in these election results so you know that's why we see this sixty five seat breakdown for the right wing and what right wing means in israel is that security comes before anything else first of all but it also in recent years has come to mean opposing a two state solution quite openly and all the right wing parties with the exception of likud because the coup does not have a platform but all the right wing parties have essentially stated their opposition to a two state solution in various forms either by proposing different kinds of partial an extension or even complete an exemption depending on how far right they are and likud has not published a platform but on the ground they have been implementing a sort of de facto creeping annexation of parts of the west bank over recent years of course prime minister netanyahu in the few days before the elections indicated an intention to move ahead with an exciting settlements you know there's a lot of speculation about whether that will continue but it definitely doesn't look like israel is headed in the direction of
8:08 am
a classic two state solution it's not even clear whether that solution is possible anymore down the of thank you so much that was. our political analyst in tel aviv. now to some of the other stories making headlines around the world today tortillas in rio de janeiro's say at least ten people are dead after severe storms hit the city some residents described the trench will downpours and flash flooding as the worst they have ever seen leading newspaper attack the government for not doing more to protect against flood disaster. the dalai lama has been taken to hospital in telly as a precautionary measure after feeling chest pain a spokesman said the eighty three year old is in a stable condition and has been ordered to rest in the exiled tibetan spiritual leader said recently that he hoped to live long enough to see political change in china so. new york officials have ordered mandatory measles vaccinations in

an option for the long awaited gregg's it still france and other european countries are getting increasingly impatient. we want to understand what the u.k. needs. six tension for and what is the political roundings i want to hear is a may to have this extension before her visit to paris may travel to berlin to ask german chancellor angela merkel about the extension but like many breaks that arrangements things didn't quite go as planned to resume a arrived a little too early and local wasn't there to welcome her after the meeting merkel said breaks it could be extended to the beginning of twenty twenty but many european leaders are urging the british to provide more clarity. this was the call on tuesday morning at a meeting of a you foreign ministers. and we are waiting finally for substantive steps in the right direction it is to talk to now
8:11 am
is nothing at all has changed and we are of course thinking about an appropriate extension of the deadline and also about a longer extension i must however come with very strict conditionals on guns. with official visits to violin and paris completed to resume and now has to brace itself for the upcoming emergency summit in brussels. let's bring out our brussels correspondent bed for. us in london starting with you bad for just two days away from britain potentially crashing out of the e.u. without a deal is there a sense of panic in brussels or just massive frustration. there's no panic i would say just the feeling here we go again this is the rerun of a bad show but the e.u. really feels now in the driver's seat because to reason made the prime minister is regarded as cruel as having no plan b. and she has basically to accept anything that the e.u.
8:12 am
would now offer her meaning a long extension holding parliament. elections in britain and pretty much being all it is now coming from brussels because she has no leverage anymore left she has no. nothing in parliament she has no majority she has known that not a command about her own parties so people will wonder how the reason may will actually reasoning her request only to have an extension two thirds of june they you know says make it a year to the end of this year and then we see the us also hoping that this time would be used to have maybe a secondary venemous not election or some way to get out of the mess. in london bigot's even leaders have said that any further extension of the brakes a deadline depends on london presenting a clear purpose for an extension does theresa may have a clear purpose or just the vague hope that parliament will eventually make up its
8:13 am
mind. it's more like a vague hope i have to say she really hasn't seen parliament coming together very much they've been voting down had deal time and again she's holding talks now with a labor of position party and from all we know those talks are not going extremely well but they're going to go on then they're going to go to new now the m.p.'s have remarked that there isn't really a tradition here in the u.k. of finding a consensus is very much the winner takes it all so that might be the reason why it's so difficult or might be one reason why it's a difficult for parliamentarians and also for the government in opposition to come together but it remains that it is very very very tricky to bridge the gaps between labor and the conservative party finally the parliament might get a vote might get another chance to get
8:14 am
a process of indicative votes where maybe they can find either in a series of votes or one solution that they can then rally behind by remains a very slow and painful process here in london. so. no consensus in london what about brussels or e.u. countries united on giving theresa may more time. yes. that's for sure because nobody in the you want to take the blame for no breaks that they will not let britain crush crush out of the union michigan year the chief knew go to has negotiated said we will not take the blame as she will get whatever she wants to have to do white and no deals in our in their in their creche and that is for sure the only thing the you know wants to make sure is that there is not. you know a prolongation for weeks and months and then again and again and you break. the new

cliff the brits have to jump the cliff and own you will not help them with this begich question to put to you many times over these months where do we go from here. well and that is again that we really don't know because everything is still up in the air would we do know is that there is really peak on the rest here that the fed he said lots of numbers from recent days own. with house stands it remains to be seen if there might be even cabinet resignations when she comes back from brussels because it's very touchy for how to accept such an extension she has always said that she wouldn't accept a long extension nothing positive. brick city is in that cabinet a reading not very happy with the process tracking on britain just still not

leaving the european union so we could see resignation says also talk of possibly another challenge its reason may steal the show. because thank you very much is big it must there in london and in brussels belgium thank you very much the best. you're watching d.w. news still to come will the rush for the tourist dollar in cambodia destroy the very thing they all come to enjoy building pyramids threatening the country's pristine beaches. now brazil's presidential you're both scenarios marking one hundred days in office today but the far right leader who's been dubbed the trump of the tropics for his leadership style has been dogged by chaos and blunders in his own administration observers say the euphoria that accompany both sonars election win is fast about

their masses merge. the gravitational forces become so massive that the matters into his think point called the singularity. black holes start small but as they suck up more and more material in their path they can begin to grow and eventually become super massive black holes like the one at the center of our galaxy the milky way. with the mass and the gravitational pull of four million stars like our sun. so far astronomers have been unable to see the milky way's central super massive black hole directly they inferred its existence from the motion of the stars orbiting around. the event horizon telescope has spent two years gathering signals from the black hole the center of our galaxy the telescope is actually a global network of synchronized radio observatories the coordinated with atomic

clocks to synchronize them and all that data is combined after the fact into what's called a correlator and that correlate or as alternately produces data that can be constructed into an image and that image will be the first time astronomers and the rest of us earthlings will have a direct visual representation of a black hole along with a powerful gamma radiation that it emits as it gobbles up matter a burst so strong and so final astronomers call it the death scream of a doomed. in the two remaining champions league quarter finals take place tonight host the event in amsterdam while manchester united take on the mighty barcelona at old trafford in the last. social team completed a remarkable comeback against police and the united coach is not fazed by the spanish giants let's take a look. well
