or something that we wouldn't use anymore today and so it is a hodgepodge of different centuries and different attempts offered to sort of stick materials together and it is a hugely difficult therefore for the firefighters to somehow contain contain this big fire that is just smoldering away and still burning away we can at the moment it seems to be a bit lower but then from time to time it just sort of goes up and it's sort of like reaching up to the sky and we see we can see the smoke white smoke rising from the body of off not in the background and so it means it doesn't mean that it wasn't love that it took so long to find the money for renovation but it means that the state to there is the separation of state and church in france and so the state didn't really step in maybe early enough to sort of find the money and to
11:16 pm
preserve this historical french monument and there will be many questions asked about why this happened and how this happened but this is for the following days indeed oh ask you this i want to ask no this is well but barbara let me start with you have you heard anyone say you're talking about possible causes i mean obviously people are going to ask themselves you know how did this happen. possible causes are the works in the roof of the conceit rolled that's what the experts have been saying the state prosecutor of paris has opened an investigation to find out what did cause the fire but there have been no other theories brought forward so far really nothing that just sort of points to different causes and it isn't quite. a typical event in essence we have seen several old buildings throughout european cities. particularly from the roof particularly if there had
11:17 pm
been works in the roof because the old wooden structures there is somehow that tiny . for the tiniest bit of. some hot tools or something remaining that might set off the fire begins once it has really taken and once it has started as we see it is devastating and it is still very very difficult to reach and to contain in this place. you know you put numbers of the actual funding and terms of the funding the french state has been putting up two point two point four million euros a year for just it's general upkeep and they had promised just a couple years ago that to double it almost five million dollars for the next ten years to help sort of the french state pitching in for its share of this renovation project the twenty year renovation project that has been undergoing which is why
11:18 pm
anyone who's been to paris recently probably only seen the notre dame surrounded in scaffolding not quite the site that people want to see you know they have to buy would have to buy a postcard otherwise but that five million pair pales in comparison to what the people running the renovation project say they're looking forward they're estimating total one hundred eighty million dollars would be needed in total that they were trying to raise one hundred ten million of that they wanted to raise over the next decade and of that forty million dollars just in urgent repairs you know you know this a spokesman for the cathedral there was a report in the new york times just a couple of years ago during the spokes person for things he was saying you know might look very strong and sturdy from the outside to your average visitor but actually the entire infrastructure is crumbling and desperate repairs are needed to keep this cathedral standing. we thank you very much very valuable information there with the numbers we appreciate. well for the people of france notre dame is much more than a church it's part of their identity as
11:19 pm
a nation here's. pots of what we are an essential part of paris is in peril that was the reaction of many in france is the fire took hold they looked on incredulous as the flames engulfed not to die. for the french people not to dam is more than just a cathedral it's the heart of paris a landmark alongside the eiffel tower a magnet for millions of visitors a year notre dame stands on the ins an s.c.t. in the middle of the river saying it's france's most famous catholic money meant dating right back to the middle ages. sharing the french revolution many of the cathedrals treasures were planned it in one thousand and four it was the venue for napoleon's carnation is the emperor of france. eight hundred thirty one so the publication of the famous novel the hunchback of notre dame by victor hugo it was a huge success and brought the cathedral new attention. now in twenty nineteen the
11:20 pm
unthinkable has happened the flames consuming not to dam cathedral taking with them centuries of history. we want to return now to our top story french authorities are warning there may be no way to contain the fire raging out of control at notre dame cathedral white male hundreds of firefighters are battling the blaze these are live pictures that we're looking at there racing to prevent the flames from spreading to the cathedral's northern built towers they are also trying to save priceless works of art from the back of the church bridge president emanuel has said a part of all of us is burning this evening. all right so let's bring people up to speed on what we know right now in the. firefighters are there they're battling the blaze but we're anticipating this fire nobody goes through the night right at least i mean information is coming in very
11:21 pm
quickly so just a small update if they actually do think the will be able to contain the fire fire officials say they'll need maybe they hope three or four more hours of fire fighting for the fires contained that doesn't mean it's out that doesn't mean they're out of the woods it just means they've contained it they have it under control and they're starting to to win this battle against the fire versus the fire battling battling them we do have one seriously injured firefighter corina fire officials we don't know the extent of his injuries or her injuries how it happened but that one firefighter seriously injured and but most importantly right now the state prosecutor in paris is saying that although there is and of course an investigation the preliminary findings is that this was an accident that doesn't mean there will be culpability and negligence perhaps but that this was an accidental fire based on preliminary findings of the prosecutor's office but of course we're going to learn much more in the days and we are getting reports that the fire at this moment is weakening. and the two built hours. they will probably be safe the air chief in paris says quite on the
11:22 pm
record quite confidently the fire has been contained in a way from the towers in the towers should be safe so at this moment it looks like at least that the superstructure of this cathedral will remain standing and no further major destruction is to be seen but again fires are unpredictable and we should wait and see how the next few hours will unfold and. the question what caused this. preliminary information would seem to point to the realization works that was in the way a lot of people are suspecting the renovation work remember it's a massive twenty year long renovation project a lot going on this cathedral is made of a lot of wood and of course construction crews of course need to bring in a lot of materials a lot of it can be flammable in the wrong situation that is all just right for fuel for any kind of fire the smallest spark short circuit remember catholic churches have a lot of candles burning yes you know you can reason that several times. we have we
11:23 pm
have it be that it was the end of the day fortunately that this fire broke out which is why at least appears that nobody was injured at that so whether any candles were burning we also don't know that. but yes right now it says to be an accident it would be a good it would be a good point to start with that renovation project with the construction because there's so much that could potentially go wrong and the money for the rid of asian has been a problem for years you know we heard that from our correspondent barbara these old piers we were you were saying five million maybe from the the state but they need what one hundred eighty million rights of the people who are the friends of the note project they are estimating this entire renovation structural integrity project could cost up to one hundred eighty million dollars of course over many years they're looking to raise one hundred ten million dollars over the next decade forty of which they need just for urgent rip. heirs and the
11:24 pm
french state has traditionally only been pitching in two and a half million dollars every year just for basic upkeep not for any major projects which they had promised to double to about five so it's it's a patchwork of funding that is a constant struggle to raise to do that work necessary to keep this and have a few of these really the funding problems will be solved relatively quickly no f. but it might be a more expensive project to there you've got to do all right camilla thanks very much but here are some of the other stories that are making headlines around the world german prosecutors have charged the former volkswagen boss martin ventricle and with fraud they say four other top managers knew for years that v.w. was cheating on emissions testing for diesel vehicles he has denied involvement in the scandal that has cost v.w. billions in fines and recalls the international red cross is into the media blackout to seek information about
