television now he's the real thing incumbent. has conceded defeat. a letter to a survivor we find out how school students are pledging never to forget the holocaust as those who experienced its horrors prepare to leave the stage. hello i'm tony martin welcome to the program police in sri lanka say the death toll from the devastating wave of bombings on easter sunday has risen sharply to two hundred ninety five hundred people were also injured in the coordinated attacks that targeted luxury hotels and churches or worshipers had gathered for easter services most of the eight ball mings appeared have been suicide attacks the government is blaming religious extremists but no group has so far claimed responsibility. just hours after the series of bomb attacks on churches and luxury

hotels sri lankan security forces carry out a raid on a house in the capital colombo a further explosion rips through the building killing three police officers along with the police special task force the sri lankan military has been deployed in the search for the perpetrators of sunday's deadly bombings. prime minister run ill wickramasinghe paid a visit to one of the three churches that were targeted in the attacks it was. the orders have been given to find those responsible for this security services will be given all the powers they want we can't allow these kinds of crimes to take place we will also look into what went wrong what are you going to be worried about for the next few days the important thing is to maintain appearance that the prime minister has said there had been prior information about possible attacks and that there would be an investigation to determine why the precautions were not taken and

that fears that sunday's massacre could destabilize the country the government has imposed a nationwide curfew and blocked access to social media saying it was necessary to stop the spread of false rumors and to ease tension. but by sunday night police in colombo reported that there had been a petrol bomb attack on a mosque and arson attacks on two shops owned by muslims. for many sri lankans the apparently coordinated attacks have brought back painful memories of the country's long running civil war when bomb blasts were a frequent occurrence. for more of its crossover to jamila nodular dean in colombo she's the editor of news an asia jamila the death toll has risen massively from two hundred seven to two hundred ninety what's behind. hi so are today already morning so my team was back at the number national hunt

because most of the injured are being treated so from the interviews which we conducted with the hosting of the staff is that there are several who have been critically wounded and several who are both in the beds as it is so the process worked overnight and they're conducting post-mortem so as been called out getting don't see shows because sometimes if we went down to the scene though he has to go to the media's then the difficulties likely to arise in the course of the day as venice. because there are several a night inside the premises and that existing families to comment identify them people be stampeded by family members of those missing for the next twenty likely through i so these deaths this high death toll it's a result of several bomb attacks another bomb is now apparently been found in diffused near columbus main airport other fears there could be more on just covered bombs. then we in sri lanka here hoping that the same was the last of the

bomb beach was found out as mike was the last. time he sees the status petting on a massive search operation in the temperatures and out and out the parts of the country has been about partitions i'm going to searching for more explosive devices which may be people and also a search operation has been launched from december sixth so that's an easy story because i'm not doing all the fact that sam maybe more explosive devices which maybe he did and no one has claimed responsibility so far for these attacks but the police have made a number of the rest what more can you tell us about those who have been arrested in connection with you ted. that's so shocking to them wanting the number of arrests because it has gone up to twenty four and just not when i was speaking to the police of shots fired of course they told me that much very few of those four
8:06 am
arrested the wrong to a muslim group and yet so they say we need self-defense also went on to state that those who were in one of the in yesterday's attacks were from a. religious extremist group so he'd be our hearing and you could meet about me being was but nothing was he surely has been confirmed as dead we have just going to be having to you finally get updates from the police also on the timing itself from the president who says. we understand that the security council meeting is been called by for long as president what can we expect to come out of that meeting . when it basically yesterday when these attacks these attacks on the president was not in the concrete he was overseas and he returned back to the country on the only disappointing though he has he has a close friend and other tense and much on team meeting that they're going to discuss the situation and as one announces he wants preventive measures they can see a lot more missions they can take to keep their support and stance so there's going
8:07 am
to be a lot of things that wanted me to discuss in particular the consternation and also the president has said he's gonna find us just so come easy who's going to pull being through these attacks and seventy three cameras in the next two weeks i just saw because we are hearing information that the police were informed of all these attacks prior and noisy technicians were unfortunately taken as you mentioned these warnings that apparently were issued there are a lot of questions unanswered questions in connection with those warnings the police say their investigation will look into intelligence failures what more can you tell us about those. yeah basically do you. think it's going to be when the. morning that my methods are so pretty i think i'm closer to media that because i was asked that. the workplace a few things about me. but then in that press conference i think we've got
8:08 am
the evening prime minister i'm going to come i think at the city and he had me because that's going to. be the back and no i have the equipment to drop a kind of and now the government is going to come down or my you know i do kind of measure what if they had a few because i mean when i talk to nancy nobody at their of the have two hundred ninety people so it definitely can really get and i'm going to be kind. jamila thank you very much for bringing us up to date there was journalist jamila nudge modine the editor of news in asia speaking to us from colombo. thank you. the attacks in sri lanka overshadowed easter festivities at the vatican and pope francis was holding easter mass as news of the attacks came in worshippers had gathered in st peter's square to hear his traditional blessing for the city of rome and the world. security forces helped visitors find their way to st peter's square
8:09 am
where there was a relatively small easter crowd. mutex entry long can we have played a rule triggering fear among the faithful from the balcony of st peter's basilica pope francis mourned the dead and condemned the bloodshed. you see there no money from them yet i want to express my love and support to the christian community. targeted while they were gathering in prayer and all the victims of cruel violence. i entrust to the lord all those who were tragically killed and pray for the wounded and all those suffering as a result of this dramatic event francis appealed to political leaders to put aside their differences and work for peace. that's what made the one who gives us his peace and the rule of weapons both in areas of conflict and in our cities and

inspire the leaders of nations to work for an end to the arms race and the troubling spread of weapons. the pont of then ended his speech with the traditional or be at or be people bless him it means they put in. the tea leaves. it's easy to stand to see this in that super. that minus and. now to ukraine where the comedienne of lot of merit selenski has won a landslide victory in the country's presidential election with a count almost complete selenski has taken seventy three percent of the vote while the incumbent petro poroshenko has managed only twenty four percent it's a stunning rebuke or ukraine's political establishment especially as selenski has only ever been involved in pretend politics before.
8:11 am
he went from playing a president on t.v. to being one in real life this is the moment flawed to me is the lengthy the new president elect of ukraine found out he had won on the world stage he's just the latest political novice with an affection for social media to sweep aside the old guard. i'm very new york thing you know thank you everybody so lansky actually studied law at university but never practiced instead opting for a burgeoning comedy career in two thousand and fifteen he began starring as a fictional ukrainian president in the service of the people his own political party was eventually named after the t.v. show. selenski has been the unlikely front runner for most of the election with poll ratings flying high he even went so far as to not show up for one of two scheduled stadium debates against incumbent president bush and co. the fact that ukrainians had spent years watching him play at being president may have helped him
8:12 am
ascend to the post selenski projected a sense that people could trust him by supporter sankoh the more experienced candidate was seen as corrupt speaking earlier test after casting his own vote selenski was calm and optimistic. we still are today it will be victory for ukraine the victory of a fair choice we've united the country and now look we've also united the journalists. many ukrainians are looking for something new frustrated by the slow pace of reforms and wearied by a five year conflict in the east of the country selenski they hope will usher in an era of change. well joining us from kiev is our correspondent nick calmly nick this is a huge victory for selenski who has no political experience has the significance of this result sunk in yet for the ukrainians. good morning terry well i think there's lots of scratching of heads amongst that at least people are
8:13 am
really kind of taken aback by the extent of that victory for. him picking up almost twice as many votes as the incumbent so far we haven't heard any more from him so let's speak very briefly to the press at his election campaign party to thank his team and then giving only the briefest of indication of what he plans to do as this transition begins saying only that he would he would fire ukraine's current prosecutor general but giving no further indication as to who would be in his team . but this is now going to be a couple of weeks transition before he finally gets into the presidential administration a couple of blocks behind me so you're saying that his opponent is his opponents camper obviously scratching their heads but what about the rest of ukraine's political establishment how are they reacting. well people seem to have accepted this as
8:14 am
a given with about ninety percent of votes now counted those exit polls from the state evening have turned out to be accurate we heard from the prime minister. congratulating also beyond that present himself saying that he would do his utmost to help selenski. with contacts and help him in the transition this was a very aggressive campaign. throughout telling ukrainians that selenski wasn't up to the job so this was a pretty impressive and magnanimous to the speed with which he accepted or shaped excepted his defeat and his willingness to accept the results not to question those that did take observers by surprise but that seems to be where he's going to say that he's lost the battle but not the war that he intends to stay in politics we have a parliamentary election here in the autumn. saying he plans to contest those and stay in ukraine's politics for now. does anybody really know what selenski is
8:15 am
planning to do here in it because in a debate last week he said he wanted to break the system. nobody really knows what he means by that and this at a time when ukraine is having to navigate very delicate very delicate relationship in a conflict with russia. well exactly terry and lots of his critics would say that selenski has tried to promise all things to all people. he's being about offering a sense of generational change of being a new face someone offering hope of campaign while being pretty reticent on the detail of what he wants to do in terms of the really big questions in terms of joining nato with the e.u. since he says that he himself is in favor but that he would put that question to the ukrainian people in referendums in terms of russia i think it would be wrong to cost him here as a straightforward pro russian candidate yes he is someone who speaks russian rather than ukrainian in his personal life he mixes the two languages in his appearances
8:16 am
but he's very keen not to show himself as being moscow's best friend the kremlin is best friend that something other candidates tried during this election and it didn't do them any good at the ballot box there was one candidate who travel to moscow before the first round came in fourth place so i think he has the potential here as someone new to maybe restart those talks about the future of us and to speak to his russian counterparts without some of the baggage that petro poroshenko has picked up but i think it would be premature to expect. kiev and moscow to make up in a hurry and president's key to make any quick concessions to the kremlin i think ukrainian society would not accept that given the war and these five years of standoff we've had now that would lead to something that is to boo in ukraine's politics nowadays. nick thank you so much nick connelly there in kiev.

now to some of the other stories making headlines around the world today police in northern ireland have released two men without charge in connection with the killing of journalist a she was shot during rioting in the city of london various police clashed with alleged members of the new ira paramilitary group the investigation into mckee's death is still ongoing. opposition protesters in sudan have broken off talks with the ruling military council it refused to hand over power to civilian led government has been under army control since former president bashir was forced to resign two weeks ago. prosecutors in japan have indicted the former nissan boss carlos ghosn on fresh charges of breach of trust these relate to payments which would lead to legibly went to a private investment company controlled by going for his personal enrichment.

now to spain which is gearing up for a general election next weekend it will be the third election just four years as the country struggles to find a way out of political turmoil the election is dominated by catalonia prime minister petro sanchez called the early elections when his former allies from the region both hit against his budget bill in parliament they were angry at his handling of catalan calls for independence well despite these problems sanchez's socialists are leading in the opinion polls behind is pablo casals of the conservative people's party and he is followed by albert rivera from the center right c.u. donal's but none of them are expected to secure and. right majority that has created an opening for vox a small far right and euro skeptic party led by santiago. that is

surging in the polls it's supposed to it's supposed to immigration gay marriage and abortion and rails against feminism and political correctness fox sees itself as a potential ally in a possible right wing coalition well their opponents are mobilizing to prevent that they say boxes divisive agenda and inflammatory rhetoric are reminiscent of the dark days of the franco dictatorship. it was the most terrible experience of his life billy merrow was just nineteen when he was thrown into this prison in madrid. today it's hard to imagine the horrors that took place here during the fascist regime of francisco franco to force mayor to speak the police staged his execution . when they point to personally you and press the trigger with no bullet in that split second two things can happen you can just stand there speechless like
8:20 am
i did or you fall apart. or say that all my mayor fears that right wing populist are gaining support in twenty eighteen the far right box party took eleven percent of the vote and to lucy has regional election now the country is heading into a general election. i feel safe today but i'm very worried because a political force like vox is yearning for a time in which we lived under a dictatorship. the far right box party wants to unseat the socialists the crowd of fox supporters have come to this bullfighting never enough for around. many have written the slogan spain for the spanish on their flags they want to ban abortion and same sex marriage and they glorify the years under the dictatorship. if we the frank a yes once a band he was the lesser of two evils. of our border ok it was a dictatorship but
8:21 am
a homeless one. yes to me i would guess that if i'm proud of spain's history thanks to franco spain made progress and became what it is today. for franco's victims and their families sentiments like these are a slap in the face for nine years they've been demonstrating every thursday in the center of madrid. the people here the rants of the far right is a shock. they want to recon ques conquests can you believe it this is a disgrace to spain. that's why we're here demonstrating against fascism not for ourselves we're old they're not but for our children our grandchildren. spain's history has divided the country far right box leaders santiago rejects the notion that any form of reckoning or redress is necessary to come to terms with
8:22 am
franco's nearly forty year dictatorship but you only look you won't apologize for our history we should acknowledge its glory its darkest site and all that best out of it and take pride in it that you know your really mayor is dismayed and angry at the spanish left which he says failed to counter the rise of the far right he hopes the radical right won't have a strong showing in the general election and become kingmakers in a new conservative government as they did in and. let's pay a visit to defray one of the last survivors of the holocaust here in germany at ninety five years old it's getting harder for her to tell her story in public a group of young people have made it their mission to keep her memories alive and those of other holocaust survivors even after they've gone. when i was told how you were separated from your mama i started to cry for me it would be the worst thing in the world to lose my mama and you were so strong and brave for. a fifteen year

old students let search and a difference read by but not so i as an art who has taken on the mission after telling the old lady story. this was one of the hardest things for me at the camp saying goodbye to my mother i knew for sure that she would never leave auschwitz again. are not a phrase was a teen anti semitism was widespread in germany targeting her so door to refer to as mother. gordon the i have a stall in youth behind me. i had no use at all and thanks to naziism. on being subjected to hostile remarks and being excluded. it was horrible especially for a child for. mr friess back then the number that the nazis tattooed on

her and the concentration camp were up to her of her identity they lost a girl if i had had it removed i would have a scar here that would remind me as well. it's just always reminds you that you can't do anything about it. erna different has survived the holocaust but she never saw her mother again the nazis probably murdered turn our streets before they were separated she told anna you must fight you must survive and tell the world what they did to us and she has done that all her life but at ninety five years old it's getting more difficult that's why vanessa eyes and heart has taken over she and other students taking part in the project called second witnesses mittal of course survivors and tell their stories to others like of this school and silva in germany. she said it was basically
8:25 am
a death train they were being loaded into a cattle car she said we stood packed tightly as sardines but less ice in the heart also tells us that and i did for peace worked as a nurse before the war that she wanted to become a doctor that she talks about her family and how sure repeated premed plans to emigrate to israel plans that never came to anything. i mean listen listen up stories like these show what happens when you leave room for racism and anti-semitism that if you give it enough space it can no longer be changed back there are so many parallels with the present such as losing your home and that's something that flows through the entire story. about this guy was just about to cry but i didn't after all i think her will to survive and tell her story is really great to your sister and for most. of us i think that you have to open some people's eyes because they think that something like this can never happen again
8:26 am
but i think that some people are still too gullible mention that we're not obliged to in the end these students write letters to and i did freeze personal messages that i've been hard brings to her. still of course it pleases me that they let someone read to them and tell them the story. often people just aren't interested. into it are no different as happy that her family helped her to make a life for ourselves after the war now she is counting on the young people who know her story to tell it when she is no longer around. i hope that this somehow stays in people's minds and that it won't be forgotten that. you're watching g.w. news just a reminder the top story we're following for you here today the death toll in the street like a bombings has risen to two hundred ninety eight with another five hundred people
