the budget. cut cut. above the but . this is you don't use live from berlin the leaders of russia and north korea meet for the first time face to face lattimer putin and kim jong un to toast their new relationship at a summit in russia's far east in the wake of the failed u.s. talks but will the meeting be a game changer when it comes to persuading north korea to abandon its nuclear arsenal also coming up a bad fit for germany's financial sector merger talks collapsed between torture bank and commits but we'll find out why plus the french president emanuel mccann

builds a long awaited reforms response to the country's yellow those protests can be soon french tempers and rescue his own political future also. can you see yourself competing in sports with this kind of vision we report on insights into playing with visual disabilities. the book. on why hearkened you so much for your company everyone. russian president vladimir putin and north korean leader kim jong un have wrapped up their first face to face meeting they discussed a host of subjects including security on the korean peninsula and the north's controversial nuclear weapons program and this just two months after efforts by u.s. president donald trump to persuade kim to abandon his nuclear weapons ended in failure
6:02 pm
. it was the first of a face to face meeting but for russia's vladimir putin and north korea's kim jong un the body language suggested it was set to go well. talks took place on an island off the pacific coast me of light of all stock and went on for two hours a little longer than expected but statements after the meeting didn't really give away any substantial news but. of course we spoke about the situation on the korean peninsula we exchanged views on what needs to be done so that we can improve the situation in the future or leave. the korean peninsula and the regional political situation which has garnered the urgent attention of the world and we also held deep discussions on strategic ways to pursue stability in the regional political situations and on matters of jointly managing the situation. but later in a press conference putin revealed how he expected to play
6:03 pm
a further diplomatic role. but in front of him you can chairman kim jong un asked us to inform the american side about his position. about the questions he has in relation to the processes that are happening on the korean peninsula and everything that's happening around these process is pretty simple. word of the summit then has offered putin a chance to push russia's agenda of opposing u.s. influence north korea's talks with president trump on the country's nuclear arsenal broke down without a deal in february. and our correspondent in moscow emily sure one centers this is says it's about the meeting between kim and putin. this was the first meeting between bloody mir putin and kim jong un and though we didn't see any major breakthroughs what we did see was a chance for the two leaders to size each other up and they seemed to get along quite well after the meeting the two leaders exchanged gifts a saber and
6:04 pm
a sword respectively and putin after the talks said that he had an open discussion with kim and he also called him an open person the main issue on the agenda today was denuclearization the denuclearization of the korean peninsula and that's something that russia is certainly in favor of they want stability in on the korean peninsula after all we shouldn't forget that russia shares a land border with north korea so the last thing they want is a conflict at their borders now after the talks it seemed that russia might take on some sort of mediator role in this conflict going forward we'll have to wait and see what that means but what it certainly means is that russia is trying to get a seat at the negotiating table and to once again get a chance to show that it's an important player on the world stage and in this case on the korean peninsula as well now putin emphasized today the importance of
6:05 pm
keeping talks going of building trust and that seems to be what the russian president is doing he's going to beijing next for an economic forum and that certainly makes sense when it comes to this conflict after all china is an important partner for north korea in fact it's the main trade partner for north korea so it has a lot of leverage in this conflict and putin said that he would certainly be discussing north korea so it seems that denuclearization and the conflict on the korean peninsula will be high up on the agenda for the russian president in the coming days as well. emily sherman reporting from moscow let's bring up to speed now with some of the other stories making news around the world home to you after months of speculation former us vice president joe biden has announced he will run for president in twenty twenty is the seventy six year old's third bid for the white house and he joins
6:06 pm
a crowded field of democrats twenty at this stage who are competing for their party's nomination biden is seen as a front runner. environmental activists have blockaded the a london stock exchange and climbed onto the roof of a train as part of protests urging britain to take action on climate change the group called extinction a rebellion that wants the government to declare a climate emergency and eliminate carbon emissions by twenty twenty five the. former and this sun chief carla scott has left jail after posting bail a four point five million dollars the gun was granted bail in march by a court in tokyo but was arrested again in april the basis for charges relating to financial misconduct but denies any wrongdoing while back here in germany a merger talks between germany's two biggest lenders. bank have ended in failure
6:07 pm
well that's despite strong pressure from chance on america's government to seal the deal the decision to ditch the talks reopen speculation of the future of the two banks that have struggle to recover from the global financial crisis over a decade ago. beilin wanted it to happen but that wasn't enough to unite the two german giants but we have storage banks said right from the beginning we would only go into these this which are if it makes economic sense if it is beneficial for shareholders and for the stakeholders this was not given the year after very deep conversations and talks with comments but we came to the conclusion if we put chances and rist against each other that we should stop the talks about this merger know the government's hopes of the two banks combining to create a powerful national champion for germany's finance sector the proven out of reach bank and comments bank have concluded the benefits would be outweighed by the risks
6:08 pm
the restructuring costs and the capital requirements they both struggled since the global financial crisis with german states still owning more than fifteen percent of comments bank the argument for merging was that it would cut costs for the pair and the taxpayer but opponents argued combining two troubled banks would just create one larger troubled bank after a month and a half of talks those troubles haven't gone away now they'll have to get to work to find separate solutions. and here with me in the studio steven pressley from business set to web joining joins me now to dive a little deeper into this subject was this announcement a surprise i don't think so you know there is so much hesitance on the part of so many stakeholders in this including the two banks themselves they really seem to drag their feet to sort of join their hands together at least for the talks there's so much political pressure around this and that's because it wasn't really
6:09 pm
a strategic merger that was being talked about these two banks didn't really need each other didn't offer something one did offer something to the other that they didn't have it was more about a merger of survival it was really pushed by political establishment that believed that it needed to happen and so it really what it did was it actually united a considerable amount of people across both sides of the economic outlook spectrum from those on the left who said it's going to be devastating for job holders and to those on sort of the more economic liberal side who said you can't just put a gun to two banks heads and tell them to join up so what was the biggest argument for a merger you know the biggest argument for what you still hear from finance minister olof schultz who really was the one who's going to spearhead the german finance minister was that germany needs a big lender to support its export oriented economy think of german companies that are overseas adidas buy or obviously the car companies the german economic model is based on exports and trading goods and overseas markets and selling them there and they want to shoulder so that we need
6:10 pm
a bank with the heft to really be able to continue doing that for these largest companies and both of these banks were on a downward slope put them together and the idea was that they would sort of turn things around so what does this mean now for you know the end of these talks well one thing it means is that the domestic landscape here in germany in terms of the domestic banking landscape actually isn't that much change because you have actually have so many regional lenders small or medium medium sized companies depend on retail bankers those who are using their savings what not going to banks for savings they're not going to affect it the question is what this means for the adidas is for the buyers for the big companies that may need that fire. yes in trade financing especially as the economy starts to sour as we've seen so far some of the indicators going down is are they going to have their lenders are they going to come from overseas how is that going to look what happens next what happens next is that both these banks are going to try and turn things around in their own banks on their own it's just been problematic though deutsche bank is mired in scandal look at the latest with the trump allegations the lending there look at the money laundering allegations come out spock has been trying to really do this sort of
6:11 pm
a digital turnaround as for become a digital first bank that's not going well costs are overwhelming they've scale back their own ambitions and then there's a lot of speculation that there could be some some mergers coming in or some some rivals from outside germany i guess those are interested in perhaps acquiring one of the other banks so that could be interesting keep us posted there is the think you sound like you lately. i've and next up we're going to shift our attention to north africa because here in europe the concern is growing over the crisis in libya and the lack of a coordinated approach to it the u.n. envoy for libya says he hopes to start peace talks between the country's two warring sides in the coming days meanwhile the un backed government in the capital tripoli is under threat from an insurgent general who has made large against germany and europe are now worried that the instability in libya could spark another refugee crisis. libya's strongman general khalifa haftar and his continued

with no security and where there is an armed conflict is a problem for germany and europe. so far germany's attempts as chair of the un security council to forge a joint un position have failed while reports of money and arms pouring in from the united arab emirates egypt and saudi arabia amounting. if you can if we are aware of these reports but we did not have our own findings that i could share german m.p.'s too are beginning to worry about the knock on effect of a new libya crisis it's obvious that the pressure of pressure on people to migrate and try to to escape from the situation. going to arise and it's going to be of course affective for for that what is happening in europe this is a key conflict europe store step in which europeans have completely abandoned control to far away gulf states and if this continues libya will become

co-existed peacefully so far the easter sunday bombings set off tensions between the two minority communities for the first time. local muslims have tried to show their support holding prayers sending condolences and emphatically condemning the dead attacks. but with the traditional friday prayers just around the corner muslims may not be safe to congregate. a small but vocal group a few young guns are trying to help them. they're from different religions and ethnicities and i'm trying to find ways of reducing the backlash muslims on our feet from. religious leaders from both communities are meeting to express their concerns as well as their solidarity crackdowns against minorities are not unknown in sri lanka and a national emergency has been declared here again just as it was during the two decades of civil war that civil liberties work after the nine eleven incident in the us in the name of national security and countering terrorism and in sri lanka
6:18 pm
we have an experience of syria but is being dramatically during the course of the war anyone after the war in the name of fighting support terrorism so there is a worry that the similar situation merits probably against muslims this time. muslims and christians have always kept a respectful distance. now there is hope that the easter sunday bombings serve as a reason to build stronger bridges between the two communities. to france now in prisons and i know michael who's announcing a series of important reforms in response to the yellow vest protests that have gripped the country while we have live pictures for you here because right now he is holding a news conference following discussions with protesters and it's all part of a bit to win back support and stakes are high for president michel his approval rating has plummeted since he was elected two years ago and one of his expected
6:19 pm
reforms is a tax cuts for the middle class all right these are live pictures joining we don't in the studio is she has she is one of our reporters there anymore you've been listening a little bit it's ongoing but you've been listening a little bit at the beginning of what he said what did he have to say well what was very interesting is that it's not an exercise that was wait a minute my coffee is particular to comfortable ways he doesn't like to hope press conferences for domestic policy it is actually never done before that is the first time in his during his mandate that he actually did that that goes on to show how he likes the exercise and he kind of ate humble pie to begin with he acknowledged the yellow vests movements in a very specific way he say and he said he's learned a lot to doing this six months of he's participating to what he calls the great debates during which he and listen to those people to the movements of the yellow
6:20 pm
in the yellow vests he also say it's something that is quite surprising because he is often described as someone who really a new and really really. despising of french people he said i've learned a lot about myself with him and he called french people and himself children of enlightenment so that's again one of the great formulas he likes to employ when he's toast what was interesting as well is that he was why he had not. yes movements and the dissatisfaction of french people he says that completely unapologetic about the first two years of his mandates so what do you make of the fact i mean so he's evidently very defiance you know yes he's knowledges that he's learned something from these past couple of months but at the same time he's sticking by his reforms he's saying i will continue my transformations in france exactly he also sais i believe in elected officials so he really really take evacuated and that also you are mentioning his approval rates they dropped by
6:21 pm
howard when he was elected he had a sixty percent approval of the french people now that dropped to thirty percent and he mentioned all he acknowledged those people who were dissatisfied about his politics he mentioned in a kind of popery single parents people with disability people living in rural areas pension ase and he said those people are living in a dead angle of society yet his carrying his reforms planned how important is this interim for him to get these right well he actually has something very important at stake which is that twenty twenty two men second men dates that he might want to two candidates for and he was talking about a great change he say's he would he was place people at the very heart of his project but so far he acknowledged those social injustices and he does what he
6:22 pm
does best which is a great speech with a figure of speech is i mention children of enlightenment all sounds very well but the people who are actually industries every saturday in france they need more than that they need that the promise the promise to cut taxes really happen but they also need to see change in their everyday life and that's a something he said he said we are at the moment in our history where those changes happened but that don't happen overnight that was in substance what he was saying so. pledging for people to give he's mandates more time you know the twenty meant what he won interestingly of course the speech was supposed to take place last week can you tell us a little bit more about that because apparently a transcript also was leaked it was leaked to the press what happened is that the fire of not. postponed out speech which was recorded and he decided instead of so in a kind of trying to limit the damage done by this leak here so this site had to go for diet exercise of talking directly to the press and even to take questions from
6:23 pm
friends generated on you know politics which i mention he never does so he did that in a bid to regain some popularity probably but you can see at the beginning of the interview he that he's in that kind of exercise he knows that a lot is at stake for him he knows he needs to be more puppet out of this so if you ones havisham a statesman of international stage here and we'll have to see please continue listening to speech because he's still talking i think we still have life pictures of him here where his press conference that continues in russia thank you for now catch up with you later. ari next up a new virtual reality exhibit in sweden is giving the public a chance to experience what it's like to play sports if you're visually impaired well the display is sponsored by fat mayor sarah miti who had to give up sadly a promising football career after he lost almost all of his sight.
