decades we'll go live to madrid. a man you can just mackinnon thanks so much for joining us. people in mozambique are reeling from the second flight flown to hit the country in as many fights lone chemist tore into the northern province of cobber delgado on sunday the government says up to one hundred sixty thousand people have been affected while thirty five thousand homes have been damaged or destroyed now the heavy rains a continuing hampering aid efforts and threatening further destruction. after the storm the rain. swelling reversed and washing away houses. here in the north of mozambique nature's fury has been unleashed and the

danger is far from over six hundred people died from the flooding caused by psycho eat ice six weeks ago it's actually kind of predicted to cause twice as much rainfall as this deadly predecessor already communities have been devastated by the storm's destructive force we saw the wind destroyed the farms and the palm trees the farms don't have anything we lost everything on the farms here in the village as you see three hundred houses have been destroyed. i'm not going to build anything else because i had two houses in the shop everything is destroyed i don't have the means to rebuild i'll just try to rebuild one home and i probably can't even do that. it is the first time in recorded history that mozambique has been hit by two cycles in one season. eight agencies have been working frantically to deal with the fallout from. now have even more

work on their hands. it's being called the talks it pays for weeks now northern thailand has been rated one of the most polluted regions in the world the worst wildfires in years combined with traditional crop burning practices a blanketing the area and small correspondent charlotte pill traveled it to chiang rai province where thousands of people have been left gasping for air and tourist numbers have plunged because of the pollution. it doesn't take long for a small blaze like this to turn into a rampant wildfire. that's something regional pretty trim some know only too well this month in northern thailand saw some of the most devastating forest fires in years and the danger is not over yet and this is a new fire the trees are very dry here. massive areas of land

burnt to ash and the damage doesn't and that. this is what happens when you mix forest fires with heavy pollution it's being called a toxic hate lingering smoke a noxious fumes creating a dangerous cocktail. two weeks chiang rai has recorded some of the worst air quality in the world. hitting the most vulnerable the hardest. eighty five year old but let's jenks from penn has lived here all his life he and his wife say the pollution has never been this bad. i couldn't see clearly it made my eyes water they were really painful i'm afraid the small could get even worse and last even longer. pollution related health problems have surged health workers say they're struggling to cope yeah. it's really bad extremely bad i

was not prepared for this sometimes even i can't breathe well and have to get medical help no matter what we do it's just not enough. emergency services blame the wildfires on an unusually dry summer. is a fear here that the fires could become the norm forty's want to be ready this fire team doesn't want to be caught off guard again that building dozens of dams like this one across these mountains they stopping the fires from spreading and holding water to put them out people here are now just praying for the rainy season to hit and put an end to this toxic might minute for this year at least. mainline polling stations have closed in spain's third general election in just
8:06 pm
four years election authorities say turnout was unusually high polls close an hour later in the canary islands and the first projections are expected soon after that prime minister petro sanchez was forced to call the election when his minority government failed to pass a national spending bill in february now ahead of today's vote the socialists led by sanchez were leading in opinion polls now not far behind them well pavlo casado and his conservative people's party but neither of these two major parties are expected to secure an outright majority that means they'll need support from smaller parties now these are enjoying a surgeon support and include the center right c.e.o. don also the far left when he does put a mosque and the far right box party. one in four voters who said to be undecided ahead of this pool it's spain's third election in four years and the most open ended in decades. what i want to think is the most where actually
8:07 pm
a crucial moment in spain. i think everyone has an obligation to get out at this time and make their votes count. it with. my ballot paper because i didn't like any of the candidates any of the parties and none of their proposals. for decades power has switched between the socialists led by prime minister petro sanchez and the conservative party the popular or popular party spain has long been seen as a country resistant to nationalism with no real swing to extremes since the fall of francisco franco's military dictatorship in the one nine hundred seventy s. . neither the far right vox party like sent to enter parliament for the first time they have been boosted by some voters discontent with the traditional parties but not all. gushy that i don't want a far right i think i voted for the lesser of two evils i'm not really convinced.
8:08 pm
that there are those that could be the first time that the far right enters the government it seems they'll get in so it will depend on which alliances are struck give us give us so this could be quite a serious change for spain. and if by there the traditional parties will most likely rely on the smaller parties to form a government with at least five in the running talks on any potential coalition could last for weeks if not months with fresh elections one of many possible outcomes. all right following the story for us in madrid is probably fairly early yes probably good to see you voter turnout turnout seems to have skyrocket rocketed across the country why is that. you're absolutely right when it seems here actually in the capital it's super and ten percent nationally it's over
8:09 pm
and ten percent interesting lee over it's around eighteen percent higher in colonia now there's been a great mobilization of people before this poll actually one sixth of the electorate were undecided and like i mentioned before a couple only has really skyrocketed but that has actually been central to this campaign here in spain how to move forward and what the solution is to the. independence question so it's dominated people's sort of. decision making and it's essentially been all people have been talking about here for weeks or even months whether they should vote for the right wing bloc of parties or whether they should vote for the left wing bloc of parties and as you say i mean many people thinking about voting for the right wing policies as it is the case in many european countries spain is seeing a resurgence of the far right what's driving that well as i just mentioned the catalonia question has been central to the debate going into this election and
8:10 pm
actually in the latest exit poll that we just got now just less than a minute ago it appears that the right wing bloc of parties hasn't reached. enough votes to form a government on it looks like the left wing which would be made up of the socialists. most they would actually need also the pro independence parties in catalonia to form a government along with possibly the nationalist party in the basque country so that's a very interesting development and we should have more on that in the next hour or so when the polls of course close in the canary islands so is there any chance these elections could finally bring some kind of political stability to spain. well i knew just a million dollar question and i was of just said there this exit poll from spanish public television appears to point in the direction no it does not look like it's going to be a clear majority for any party or that it's going to be easy for any party to form
8:11 pm
a government and it looks like the socialists of presidential that of course is the prime minister will need support from. the most and possibly the support of the nationalist parties from the bus country and also those independents from dependence parties from catalonia so interesting development there and i'm sure that we'll have more in the coming hours absolutely will be staying on that story. in madrid thank you so much. in the by onion extended the lead at the top of the table despite failing to win against relegation threatened nuremberg took the lead in the second hall through herrera but said she could not marry equalised before in europe but missed a late penalty the one all school line means by an a two point clear of don't mind with three games to go. as saturday's blunder sleek action included one of the biggest games of the season as don't want hosted bitter rivals with dalton battling
