travel of the coast. and the local fishing business is suffering. and. business nigeria is full of paradoxes africa's top economy that hof its people live in poverty it's the continent's largest oil producer and yet it imports ninety percent of its fuel from abroad as it doesn't have the facilities to process crude so when will the nation's fortunes rise like so many of its neighbors. the largest oil refinery in the world is being built here near lego's it will enable nigeria to process its own crude oil in the future so far the country has had to import oil products at high prices despite its own rich deposits. the nigerian state subsidizes gasoline and diesel with almost four billion dollars a year to make fuel affordable the international monetary fund recently criticized the move saying the country should reform its economy and diversify many experts

coming in today a lot sounds like it hinges on this refinery which could be the biggest of its kind of the world when will it get built and will it get built it's already being built and it's well on its way to be commissioned. by twenty twenty next yeah of course you can never rule out in such huge complex projects you can never tell you rule out delays but you know six hundred fifty thousand barrels a day refinery nigeria currently has it's not like it's not that nigeria doesn't have any refining capacity it has an installed nameplate capacity of four hundred fifty thousand barrels per day while for refineries what we've not been doing. is expanding our refining capacity as our population and economy has been growing it's something you're doing now it's something with and something the government is trying to fast track in order to get something of this size ready by next year
7:20 pm
takes a lot of time and to do it safely of course it takes a lot of a lot of measures to ensure that things are going wrong. critics say it won't be up and running until twenty twenty two well they're always nice is and don't forget this is not the only refinery project that is currently. two if you pardon the pun in the pipeline at the moment so that is another finery project. probably not the same size but yeah we are you know determined to expand our refining capacity and this time around we're doing it. in hand with the private sector because for refineries that we have the name plate capacity of one of forty five one of its two thousand but as we did owned by the nigerian vote it is that a problem when it comes to something like corruption well it was in the past but.
7:21 pm
the current administration the current president that we have mahmoud abbas who was elected on a platform to fight corruption and he is known for that he's been head of state in the past and he took on venality back then and he's doing the same thing now and that's why nigerians voted for him overwhelmingly how effective is this battle against corruption a very very effective you know. they've been reforms that have changed the accounting system in nigeria we've got. the institutions that have been put in place to fight corruption. strong presidential advisory committee on corruption that keeps on continues to churn out policies that have proven to be very effective for instance we have a whistle blower policy where with the brewers actually get

a reward when they report on corrupt franks's so there's so much going on you know apart from the new technology advances going on and if you look at our banking system we have bob's one of the most effective online and mobile platform banking systems so payment systems are very effective. very efficient all that said why then doesn't nigeria have a growth rate similar to some of its neighbors ethiopia say or guyana which is full customer by close to nine percent this year nigeria seems to be doing a lot if it really is tackling corruption and changing around its fortunes when it comes to the oil industry why then isn't it hitting those higher growth rates like other workers i think you know comparing us to ghana with all due respect would be unfair because you know the states that in nigeria we have thirty sixty and one

or two of the states is almost as large as ghana so it's a good but of population of one hundred ninety three million people we have had. challenges in the past but we're well on our way we're transforming honeyed so it's a huge it's a very huge country that requires a lot of reform but we're well on the path of reform and don't forget we're also a democracy we've had a sixth election since one thousand nine hundred ninety. and in a democracy you can't just. ruled by fear that you have to negotiate you have to engage you know when you do so things take time and that's what is i think about it thank you very much for coming in today pleasure talking to pleasure. well tunisia's prime minister use of chaffetz had stooge the

a decisive phase. the transport industry is a big employer in ghana and it's riddled with valuable cargo often goes missing which has led recruiters to think that maybe women could do a better job. commercial trucks are a common sight on ghana's roads female truck drivers however a lesser ladybird logistics is looking to change the landscape it only hires women to operated vehicles there are just twenty one of them so far but they're actively recruiting. i think the female drivers are more cautious they're really careful maybe it's a female thing because we are always thinking about the children that we have at home. making sure that you don't want to take sector with. some of the company's clients think women are less inclined to cheat their employers at least that's what zen petroleum says explaining why he trusts women more with deliveries fabulous

in no position to stop foreign trawlers from looting their waters despite a month long ban on industrial fishing. trollers don't give us a chance they bankrupted my business i mean they destroyed my properties i'm left with nothing zero that. there are more than one hundred foreign trawlers in the waters off of sierra leone more than half of them are chinese owned and beyond the reach of inspection teams. only local fishermen were arrested during the ban. three of them for using illegal nets and three others for trying to sell fish to export hers. fish accounts for eighty percent of the animal protein intake in the sierra leonean diet the fisheries sector employees five hundred thousand of sierra leone's population of seven point five million people fishing accounts for twelve to
