net and arrests three of the suspected mastermind. i'm full gallop welcome to the program britain's major political parties have suffered big losses in local elections in england with many blaming it three summers governing conservatives lost hundreds of council seats and control of several local authorities from the opposition labor party that by jeremy corbett also lost significant support smaller parties made big gains the anti liberal democrats and greens a road away from public disenchantment protected the president goes stations and the conservative party conference in wales prime minister theresa may face to sometimes hostile audience. thank you everybody.

when she was finally allowed to speak threesome a had this to say about her party's heavy losses now this is a difficult time for our party and these election results are a symptom of that we have the privilege of governing our party at a momentous time and we have a responsibility to deliver something truly historic what is momentous and historic is sold a simple and straightforward. environmental youth movement started by the sixteen year old swedish activist gratitude has inspired young people in many countries more than a million students have taken part in school strikes to demand action against a climate change one group of german pupils turned out today to pressurise bosses at the annual shareholders meeting of the power generator r w e. these students are
8:03 pm
skipping school for climate protection with posters and chants the fridays for future youth movement as well as environmental activists trying to rack up the pressure on german energy company r. w. e. today the protesters didn't go unnoticed by the company's top management in essen fridays for future a fridays for a future is adding a topic to today's agenda it's making everyone aware of the issue but making demands also means doing something unfortunately it seems to me that feasible action gets short shrift in many debates are w e s corporate leadership plans to restructure the company in fact it's supposed to purchase solar and wind based electricity provider and on this year this should help r.w. ease investment value and polish its image for louise annoyed by our it's a step in the right direction but it's not enough she was able to express her view in a speech given to top management and shareholders during r w e's annual shareholders
8:04 pm
meeting every i r w e has been saying it wants to be greener for a long time but hasn't been doing anything instead it's continuing to invest in coal based energy and robbing people in villages of their livelihoods and they used to and the young protesters are demanding that our w e completely exit coal based energy by twenty thirty and shut down a quarter of its coal powered energy stations by the end of twenty nineteen r w e counters that it is providing jobs that the older generations need. so is this new generation of climate warriors having any effect dr miranda is a professor of environmental and climate policy at the technical university of new nick welcome to day w is there any evidence that these friday's future rallies are affecting a government policy. oh there certainly is i mean if you see that very recently the parliament in the united kingdom just declared a climate emergency and in germany in the city of cullman stunts we just had
8:05 pm
a similar kind of announcement from over the sitting in is a paladin so what we're seeing is governments that are starting to recognize the voice in young people it's very powerful maybe it's a sign that democracy really can work in that the next generation is ready to take climate change into their own hands and really fight for their own future and actually from my perspective a very exciting thing and others declarations from the british parliaments and not so german council are anything more than symbolic. when i know from the city of constance food example they are now going to require that all actions that are funded by the municipality will have to be proved for their climate connections whether or not they're really digs i have a lender of climate change world and i think that what we're seeing in the demands are that action really needs to be taken not just goals established here in germany the government for example passed
8:06 pm
a goal years ago to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by forty percent over one nine hundred ninety levels by two thousand and twenty but that goal is being widely missed and i think one of the things we're seen from these young students is to say that's not right that this can't be the case and the fact that powerful companies and powerful politicians are starting to have to speak to the students is already changing the nature of the dialogue and the jobs is always an issue that is brought up the way we heard the c.e.o. saying that carbon based technologies are necessary to keep the older workers in jobs i do agree with that is that is the right. you know that's been an argument we've heard for such a long time and the reality is that jobs are now in other areas there in renewable energy and in energy efficiency and in the creation of local economies focused on sustainability and even older workers can be retrained to do these kinds of jobs if
8:07 pm
you can work in a coal mine you can certainly although work in an area related to energy efficiency improvements in the building sector so so i think it's a it's an argument we've heard for a little bit too long now and this is the students are right climate change is a very very serious problem and we don't have a lot of time left so i think it is time that we need to make much deeper changes as the students are demanding so robbo to the students for making us listen it's a hot salvo for any politician who's looking for votes to tell a community that is based around mining for instance that yes you know your jobs are that they're still cold in the ground but your jobs have gone because we're going in a different direction that's that's a real vote loser. now of course it's a very very hard thing and i don't mean to. downplay the importance of that local communities that are impacted by these changes but take a look at this surge of support for green parties that are happening in various
8:08 pm
european countries right now and i think that's a sign that people are really getting worried about the state of the environment it's everything from climate change to plastic in the oceans loss of tropical rain forests there's so many serious problems right now and we're basically trading off short term positions for long term survival. of all kinds of species and i think that's what the students are really concerned about they're really worried about what kind of future will they have available to them if we use all the natural resources in climate change leads to the kindness say clones are seen getting india today what does that mean for these young people but the change is a peacemaker and they are slow perhaps it's too late. you know if we start arguing that way then and then we have no chance and we really do have to just start taking as much action as we can and yes it takes time and some things are harder to change than others but there's so much that can be done there's so
8:09 pm
many low hanging fruit still out there and some of the bigger changes even those are starting to really take take place we're starting to see electric models on the car it's on the roads are starting to see wind turbines and solar panels all across europe and also in other parts of the world so that change is happening and if we all contribute we can really make it happen we're talking to thanks for joining us professor miranda shreyas from the technical university of new nick. now to some of the other stories making news around the world spain is refusing to hand over venezuelan opposition politician leopoldo lopez despite a warrant to detain him lopez has taken refuge in the spanish embassy in caracas after escaping house arrest in twenty forty eight he led the first major movement against president nicolas maduro. turkey's coast guard says nine people including five children died when their migrant boat sank in the aegean sea the vessel was
