stops people being able to pass on the virus to their hiv negative partners and so they're hopeful an end to hiv aids might finally be insight our reporter jarrad rate has been reading that research jared thanks for joining me explain these findings to us basically it means that if every single person around the world who was living with hiv so you just under forty million people if they had access to effective treatment it would mean that there would be no new cases of hiv the drugs the treatment that i'm talking about is what's called antiretroviral therapy on. these are drugs that suppress the levels of hiv in the blood to very very large levels and so this study looked at a thousand gay couples in europe one of one person in the couple was hiv negative and the other patna was hiv positive but taking these antiretroviral drugs there were couples that were having sex without a condom and what the study found was over an eight year period there were no
6:11 pm
instances of the hiv positive patna taking these antiretroviral drugs infecting the hiv negative patna so the study's authors say this means that people living with hiv who are on effective treatment cannot pass on the virus to their sexual partners and they can say it is definitively now because this backs up research existing findings done on heterosexual couples that found the same thing as exceptional findings really hopeful what does it mean for people living with hiv so people living with hiv aids around the world suffer from all sorts of discrimination and stigma and this is stigma that hasn't really caught up with the advances in modern medicine over the last thirty years where now we know it's possible to take drugs like this and leave a perfectly healthy normal lifespan and now we know are not have to worry about passing on the virus to your sexual partners probably we hope everyone has this
6:12 pm
will reduce some of that stigma and testing news but still not a cure as such that's right so these antiretroviral drugs do suppress the levels of hiv in the blood bus they don't get it there's no cure it doesn't cure it is that these are drugs that you have to keep taking continuously well it sounds quite simple then why isn't it possible to just put everyone on this medication you know there are some significant barriers to hiv treatment some of which i've mentioned like the stigma or and fear and homophobia and things like that but also around access to testing regular testing and treatment. and this is particularly key in areas like eastern and southern africa where levels of transmission are high countries like the u.s. and u.k. want to end transmissions completely i guess findings like this positive but it won't be able to be done unless everyone who who has hiv is able to get the treatment and people who don't have it or can get tested to find out that they do

have it and then and then get the treatment for it so these health structures have to have to catch up as well really exciting development in the research that jerad rate thanks very much for coming in to explain it to us. controversial champion runner and cast to cement his won her last eight hundred meter race before the introduction of new regulations the rules limit high testosterone levels in certain fame track athletes someone you know lost a court challenge against the changes but that didn't stop the south african from putting in a stellar performance at a diamond league event in doha. despite all the criticism and legal decisions caster semenya had to face off the track on it she still rules this was the season opener of the professional diamond league athletics tour and the south african was running and her favorite event she led almost from start to finish but if she's to continue running the eight hundred meters the rules now say she must take drugs to
