a cools transmissible that's something a hiv research is want everyone around the world to know they released landmark evidence this week showing that taking drugs to treat hiv a completely stops people being able to pass on the virus to their rights hiv negative and so they're hopeful an end to hiv aids i finally in sight i wrote a report of jarrad raid has been reading into that research explained some of the findings to us so basically what the findings mean is that every single person in the world who had hiv just under forty million people if they had access to effective treatment then they would be no new cases of hiv and the treatment i'm talking about is what's called antiretroviral drugs that they they reduce the detectability of the virus in the drug in the blood and the study the study that you mentioned looked at a thousand gay couples in europe one of whom in the partnership it was a negative in the other one was hiv positive by taking these antiretroviral drugs
7:11 pm
and and these couples were having sex without a condom and what this study found over a seven year period is that they were not or cases of hiv being transmitted from the positive patna to the negative and what the research is say this proves is that people living with hiv if they're being treated effectively then there's no way that they can infect sexual partners and they can say this definitively because a similar similar research was done on heterosexual couples and found the same thing or really exciting findings and what does it mean for people living with hiv so people living with hiv around the world face stigma and discrimination and i guess the stigma hasn't really caught up. these advances in modern medicine because now we know are you that if you take drugs like these and retroviral is then you can lead a perfectly normal healthy life and i guess the hope is that some of this stigma is

reduced around hiv so an amazing development but still not a cure hiv no that's right it's important to point out that these drugs don't queue up people of h.i.v. they just reduce the amount of the virus they suppress the virus in the blood and these are drugs that you need to keep taking on an ongoing basis that sounds quite simple why is it possible not to just give everybody who's infected with hiv the proper treatment so there are some barriers to treatment like the social issues i just mentioned the stigma and discrimination but also very practical measures like not everyone with hiv can access a regular testing and treatment and i guess what these findings show is that governments need to provide that access to regular testing and treatment treatment that we know our studies like this show does really work so still a ways to go but you know always a really exciting development in a treatment gerri thanks so much for sharing it with us was to some sports news now
