treatment then they would be no new cases of hiv and the treatment i'm talking about is what's called antiretroviral drugs that they they reduce the detectability of the virus in the drug in the blood and this study the study that you mentioned looked at a thousand gay couples in europe one of whom in the in the partnership it was a negative in the other one was positive by taking these antiretroviral drugs and and these couples were having sex without a condom and what this study found over a seven year period is that they were nor cases of hiv being transmitted from the positive patna to the negative and what the research is say this proves is that people living with hiv if they're being treated effectively then there's no way that they can infect sexual partners and they can say this definitively because
8:11 pm
a similar similar research was done on heterosexual couples and found the same thing are really exciting findings and what does it mean for people living with hiv so people living with hiv around the world face stigma and discrimination and i guess the stigma hasn't really caught up with these advanced. as in modern medicine because now we know ari that if you take drugs like these antiretrovirals then you can lead a perfectly normal healthy life and i guess the hope is that some of this stigma is reduced around hiv so an amazing development but still not a cure hiv that's right it's important to point out that these drugs don't queue up people of h.i.v. they just reduce the amount of the virus they suppress the virus in the blood and these are drugs that you need to keep taking on an ongoing basis that sounds quite simple why is it possible not to just give everybody who's infected with hiv as proper treatment so there are some barriers to treatment like the social issues i just mentioned the stigma and discrimination but also very practical measures like
8:12 pm
not everyone with hiv can access regular testing and treatment and i guess what these findings show is that governments need to provide that access to regular testing and treatment treatment that we know our studies like this show does really work so still a ways to go but you know always a really exciting development in one time a treatment gerri thanks so much for sharing it with us. the noun to some sports news and controversial champion run a cast as the menu has one last eight hundred meter race before the introduction of new regulations the rules limit high testosterone levels in certain fame track athletes semenya lost a court challenge against the changes but that didn't stop a south african from putting in a stellar performance at a diamond lake event in doha. despite all the criticism and legal decisions caster semenya had to face off the track on it she still rules this was the season opener of the professional diamond league athletics tour and the south african was running
