further south even where rockets are continuously fired into southern israel as well as air raids are continuing from the israeli army into gaza now as people you have opened their public shelter to stay here behind me just to be on the safe side so people have time to run to the shelter at the same time while you know the fighting continues and has also intensified in some hours then it dies down usually but it is still at a very high level at the moment there have been reports of more casualties on this very sad but also in gaza and also there are reports of the first targeted killing of a senior hamas member when both sides have said they're going to continue to keep up these attacks of people nervous that it could escalate into a war as a date in twenty four tane. absolutely i talked to some people on the phone in gaza
4:05 pm
they're extremely burridge it's an extremely difficult situation as well as here in the south of is where it has been going on since saturday morning and those situations could always escalate further we have heard prime minister netanyahu saying that he ordered the army a for a very harsh response he's also under a lot of pressure to do so at the same time there has been a statement by the joint command of islamic jihad and hamas saying as long as strikes continue on gaza as well as you know the continuing blockade on gaza they will continue. defending themselves as they put it so there's always that sense that it could go further and of course all eyes are on the egyptians they have in previous times mehdi a target and we know that a delegation of hamas and islamic jihad is actually in cairo this week so they are all eyes on them whether they can calm down the situation this time well just briefly talk us through what sparked this latest outbreak of violence. well there
4:06 pm
has been a period of relative calm around the israeli elections because egypt had brokered some sort of understanding between israel and hamas but that calm has broken down now also has been some frustration of reports coming out of gaza because the implementation of this understanding has had not been followed up so that's the fuel from gaza now this week attentions had risen and on friday doing to friday protests there had been some incidents so that caused so also this latest round of violence that we are seeing can you cramer in southern israel thank you. the newly crowned king of thailand has been taking part in a seven kilometer procession through bangkok on the second day of his three day crowning ceremony the position comprises more than a thousand soldiers police and government officials there's
4:07 pm
a chance for the thai people to see their monarch in his voice of king. kong the senate to the throne two and a half years ago when his father came away after reigning for seventy years his son's official coronation ceremony began on saturday. our correspondent charles and pills in bangkok and following those celebrations shall of today's a second day of the celebrations here or there in the heart of it what's been happening. ok they're back yes what if the first day was the day for the formalities when the king was actually crowned today the second day is a day for celebrations there were thousands of people lining the streets here behind me a short time ago as the king passed along this route we were satin mung the crowd they were all chanting long live the king all of them sitting down as the king passed as a mark of respect for the king indeed here in thailand he has the status of
4:08 pm
a daisy a divine status is a people were extremely respectful as he passed very excited to see him walking along these streets many people been passing along these streets many people of course been here since the early hours of the morning china to make sure that they did get a spot along the parade route and it really has been incredibly hot here today they've been a lot of ambulances medical staff on standby trying to help people out of the heat got a little bit too much for them but people still were willing to brave those temperatures and we know as well that a lot of people were bussed in by a thirty's from around thailand trains buses also free here in bangkok in a way to in an effort to encourage people to come here to witness this celebration and essentially witness history in the making the pictures certainly are spectacular but tell us a little bit more about the newly crowned monarch. yeah pretty impressive pictures as he was being carried through here in that golden.
4:09 pm
carriage there's been a lot of poems and so on throughout this entire event and that is in line with edition when it comes to the monarchy now what we know about this king is that he of course has been on the three instances late father passed away in twenty sixteen we know he's got a bit of an international background he had his early years here in thailand that was educated in australia and the u.k. we know that he's an officer in the time military and we all know how he would lie . to govern going forward he said that in his first command as king yesterday that he'd like to thread a reign with righteousness for benefits and happiness of the type people say that we are going to charlottesville some fill in bangkok thank you for that. now to some of the other stories making news around the world syrian government forces have bombarded rebel held areas in the country's northwest dozens have been killed and wounded in the province this escalation of violence is the most serious

in the region since russia and turkey negotiated a cease fire in september. pope francis has arrived in bulgaria to begin his three day visit to the balkans he wants to improve ties with the orthodox church and meet the country's patriarch new fit in sofia but in his opening address francis urged all garia to take in more why grants. in rwanda the remains of nearly eighty five thousand victims of the country's genocide have been laid to rest in a ceremony in the capital kigali the victims were among more than eight hundred thousand people mainly to seize who were massacred by her to exclude extremists and militia forces twenty five years ago. from south africa's governing african national congress is holding its final campaign rally ahead of a general election supporters poured into the john is big stadium for the event it's aimed at boosting support for the party is it faces the strongest challenge yet to its twenty five years in power president cyril run of poses promising new
4:11 pm
jobs and economic growth and seize govern south africa since the apartheid system ended but been shaken by several corruption scandals. joining me live from that rally in johannesburg is state of he is christine christine hi the a.n.c. has been in power since ninety four when nelson mandela became president what's at stake for the party and the selection. as you rightly say this is the most contested election in south africa is history post a party that is they see has enjoyed big majority wins out when it comes to the polls but in the last two elections supports has been sliding what the new leadership of the african national congress is looking to do lead by sort of them up or say is to reverse those losses at the polls you know have another play on this see that is the economic freedom fight is taking away young people from this party young people
4:12 pm
who are frustrated that the african national congress has not done enough to change their lives twenty five years into this democracy prevail but as you say support has been dropping for the party ciro rev oppose trying to restore some of that image of the eye and see how successful has he been so far. ahead that's what this election is really going to tell us the. self that they unseat gets is that if you're telling how much the and i'm opposed that you fit for it as it's been tough here in south africa it's going to translate into getting those despondent apathetic voters back to the polls a lot of people at will to away from the party people who can't necessarily vote for another party but have decided that they wouldn't be voting at all come up with this message today and say suppose as has been that the party has reformed its rebranded that they've looked at the possum they've seen the mistakes that they've made to the connecting to the people corruption that is taking place in this country he is saying to south africans that with these presidency things are going
4:13 pm
to change he spoke today about job creation he spoke today about not placing another generation of south africans be destined for poverty the stakes are high and a lot is hinge on that i'm opposed to this image off the mat who is not corrupt to come in and change the face of this posse rebeca part of the reason why jacob zuma could not finish a term that was meant to finish now is because they and c. needed to change face by the time to see election come so i'm up or so has been in office for just over a year and the message to south africans has been i'm going to bring back investments because people trust me and that is what it translates into job creation especially for young people critical we're talking about a country with unemployment north of twenty five percent the bulk of that all young people in this country corruption has seen investment flow out of fear and so a lot is at stake for the african national congress it has to prove that it is still relevant for south africa twenty five years post a possibility so job creation and the economy you know would you say that's the most pressing issue that is that when voters want the next government to address.
4:14 pm
that is essential to prevent that you've got a lot of south africans living in poverty while we talk about poverty being less than a dollar a day a lot of south africans living fall below that young people are unemployed and in fact the electoral commission talked about the fact that the bulk of the people in the fight to vote for doing so are young people and a lot of them say up. speaking to some of them that they don't feel that the politicians have done anything for them and will be doing so any time so jobs i mean this is one of the most evil societies in the world according to jeannie low emissions so you're talking about a country that is plagued with poverty that has been one of the ticking time bombs that have been warned by focus all over the world the likes of the i am in the world bank the unemployment rate is far too high a lot of young people not doing anything and so that is the key thing rebecca addressing the issue of jobs bringing back effacement into this economy. christine in johannesburg thanks very much for that update. you are watching data news live
