are the world's two largest economies on a collision course on friday morning the u.s. is set to slap more tariffs the most biting yet on two hundred billion dollars worth of chinese products and beijing it has promised to retaliate the pressure on american and chinese trade negotiators to pull back from the brink has never been greater as they meet in washington it's all on the table trade tariffs and trust tonight it is trust that remains in short supply i burned off in berlin this is the day. the way you see the charts with because they're broke that. they broke. there will be no winner in a trade war. this is not sort of china's interests the interests of the united

states nor the interests of the world we won't back down until john it stops cheating our workers are still in a job china will not capitulate to any pressure. and we have the determination and ability to defend our own interests the way the piggy bank that everybody steals from including china. also coming up germany is considered a global leader in protecting the environment and reducing pollution but how much of that is green washing for good p.r. tonight the dirty saw of a clean country. once deemed a world champion in environmental protection it seems germany is at least now realizing that there's more to the fight against climate change the meticulously separating of that. which you our viewers on p.b.s. in the united states and all around the world welcome we begin the day talking tough on trade with the likely option of simply walking away that is where the

united states stands tonight as u.s. and chinese trade negotiators meet in washington this meeting was supposed to be one of the last with a trade agreement on the horizon but the outlook and the mood at the white house it changed dramatically last weekend when president trump was reportedly notified that china was trying to rewrite segments of the proposed agreement segments that were understood to be finished in final or trump is now accusing china of breaking the deal of promising at the negotiating table to do one thing and then trying to get something different put on paper and there are consequences at midnight tonight on the u.s. east coast will slap the harshest tariffs yet on chinese products it appears the chinese may have overplayed their hand by underestimating the u.s. his commitment to using trade tariffs if that is the case then china has been mis reading the u.s. president for quite some time. the iraq of economic surrender is totally

by how u.s. markets are closing today a there's little hope that a trade deal is going to be reached soon early soon enough to mitigate the effects of the impact of these new trade tariffs would you agree. you know right now we are experiencing their worst week of the year but at some point blue chips in the thursday session were down as much as four hundred fifty points and then we could recover quite a bit because u.s. president donald trump and actually said that he received a beautiful letter from his counterpart see so maybe there is still some hope that maybe just toss a coin and see what will happen to a terrorist but yes there is certainly nervous market and all week long especially after pos weekend as you mentioned earlier that's right don't drop that quarter there yes i mean what have you been hearing from traders there on the other trading floor how do they read the actions of china recently i mean from here is it seems

that china misread the strength of the u.s. economy talking like the federal reserve policy for example and they gambled that trump would blink first is that what you're hearing there. well i'm not so certain if china really misread the economic news because overall it looks pretty bright here in the united states at least for now but maybe they misread the willingness of washington to cut a deal and then by the way we also got some criticism from democrats saying that maybe no deal is better than a bad deal there has been a lot of talk if the protection of intellectual property rights will not be part of the deal and dented called some criticism here so maybe that was also some reason why we actually saw this turning in strategy and those somehow your words out of washington and you talk to me about the impact of these new tariffs we're talking about twenty five percent on two hundred billion dollars worth of chinese goods

that's practically almost always imports coming into the u.s. . it's certainly not going to be helpful costs will increase you will probably see some pressure on earnings from some big u.s. called peroration so you might see higher consumer prices here in the united states but i guess what really worries traders here is that also when the chinese economy should get affected in a negative way by those terrorists that goods lead to weaker growth in china that would be bad news for countries like germany or other european nations who exports to china so you could have all those effects and that would be negative and then specially also if china actually does retaliate and then we become full blown a trade war so that's kind of the very it's not so much those twenty five percent on the two hundred billion dollars it's all what could follow that really makes traders and investors nervous you say what can follow i mean there's

a lot more than just these trade tariffs there's the iran nuclear deal that's falling apart there's north korea i mean these are three very volatile very active geo political flashpoints it's almost impossible to give the global economy a positive prognosis at the moment isn't it. well i mean besides the trades and negotiations i'm not so certain if the dealings with north korea at least for now are really such a big impact on the economy around the globe and when we talk about what's going on in iran that does might impact the oil market but i would think for the global economy that's pretty much it for now so i would say when it comes to the economy overall trade that's really the biggie here all right at the new york stock exchange thank you very much. the bishops are at the service of the people. they are not above the law and if

they do wrong they must also be reported. they must be subject to the procedures like all others. it is a groundbreaking new decree that many say is decades overdue pope francis has issued a new law aimed at holding the catholic hierarchy accountable for failing to protect the victims of sexual abuse within the church now it's called voce s.-t. looks monday or you are the light of the world and it sets a unified standards for the church around the globe it makes it compulsory for bishops and other church officials to report any credible accusation or coverup of sex abuse to their superiors all types of abuse must be prosecuted victims protected and investigations completed within ninety days.

so those are the changes that talk about that so joining me now from buffalo new york is dr robert hoatson he's a former priest and a sexual abuse survivor he runs the road to recovery nonprofit organization that helps other clergy abuse victims are frozen it's good to see you good to have you back on the day let me get your reaction if i could to the news came out of the vatican today what do you think well i'm disappointed once again the pope has outlined a system that really just continues the present system the people who have mishandled clergy sexual abuse cases are bishops and religious superiors those are the very people now that reports of other clergy sexual abuse are going to be given to so what we're doing here is saying that the church is inherently incapable of policing itself and that the pope francis is attempting to do again he's trying to

police the church by himself with other bishops and religious superiors that it cannot work because it has not worked a massive cover up of clergy sexual abuse throughout the world occurred because of the very people that he now wants reports to be given to in a doctor's name and i spoke earlier this year with the pope held that conference at the vatican with top clergy from around the world to discuss the child abuse scandals i want to play a part of our conversation for our viewers take a listen what about a realistic outcome from this summit is taking place right now in the vatican what would be a successful outcome in your opinion. well judge just what i said would be successful outcome it's very simple we're dealing with criminal behavior the sexual abuse of a child is criminal behavior and so the pope all he has to say is anybody who does

this to a child sexually abuse a child must be reported to law enforcement so that he may be held accountable for that in the courts of criminal law and must be forced to report to local law enforcement doctors and that's what she wanted then that's what you want now and that is precisely what is not required in these changes right that is correct yes once again crimes against children or crimes against anyone in society are handled by the professional law enforcement authorities and once again the pope is talking about doing it in outs and doing it in-house is absolutely very potent because it doesn't work. the very people who did it cases who mistreated victims who obfuscated and lied about sexual abuse allegations against clergy and religious there are the very people who are now going to be asked to

adjudicate these cases it just cannot work so why do you think dr why do you think the pope is not going taking that next step we heard earlier this evening i was talking with other sexual abuse survivors and their take is that the legal systems around the world are different and some countries some dioceses they just don't have the legal authorities there that they can trust and work with i mean do you think he was factoring that in the equation. that's that seems to be what he is doing he's factoring in that equation however anybody who is sexually abused as a minor has a crime committed against him or her tell that thirteen year old boy who goes to his local priest and says that another priest abused him and that priest then says to the child oh i'm sorry i can't take this to the authorities because we don't

trust them the fact that a man is ordained a priest says that he's the servant of the servants and so it doesn't matter a peek if he can't trust the police or edes afraid of the police it has to go to the police it has to go to some law enforcement authority and the the priest has to take his lumps nothing was the child is the most important as a person in this relationship what about the canon of confessional confidentiality has that been. touched or dented at all by these new rules well there have been some efforts by some theologians to change those rules and i believe in a couple of countries they've made some progress in north st louis of for example i believe they've made some some some progress for example there's a kind of lawyer here in the united states father jim connell who has suggested that that the whole confessional aspect be changed so that if

journey across germany i'm travelling back to the capital. where the german government is feeling the heat of climate change. between its love of cars a nuclear power phase out and the country's long goodbye to cofield energy gemini's struggling to meet climate goals. in recent weeks that very issue has been quite literally knocking on the government's front. inspired by the swedish climate activists to to back for the past four months hundreds and thousands of german school kids have been in school every friday demanding action against climate change university student louise annoyed has become the face of the fridays for future movement in germany which is now backed by more than twenty six thousand scientists we need our government to act now and i don't see that right now we keep . knowing that they are just trying. and

disturbing our climate to an extent that. we have. we will be struggling to stay alive in the long term and species. once deemed a world champion in environmental protection it seems germany is at least now realizing that there's more to the fight against climate change the meticulously separating rubbish blushes heat wave alone brought home the harsh realities of climate change cargo ships brought to a standstill drive crops forest fires and damage to infrastructure. having missed its twenty twenty climate goals the german government is now looking ahead to twenty fifty with the aim of phasing out coal powered energy by twenty thirty eight students likely we want to see the end of that by twenty thirty at the latest and. demonstrators have vowed to continue striking until they see more action from the

government. if in twenty years time your children or your grandchildren or the children of the neighbors will ask you what did you do back then when will you know what was so could change things where you could still make a difference what you do and i'm telling us the government here we were to judge this government. harshly. because we will look back on them and see that there were amongst the last ones who could actually change something and change the path we are on. knowing the consequences of what's happening if they don't do that . it's magic. and you know back in the studio with you you had a nice trip around your body but what were the other concerns the people told you about so we were in for their case together and those main concerns was digitalisation or rather germany's lack of digital infrastructure at the moment the

housing crisis demographic change in terms of germany's aging population which of course is having effects only on pensions but also on the labor market particularly the skilled workers shortage and also that climate changes are so in that report in what are these all important for germany's future and you've said some but i mean if you look at it as its entirety ones are so important well these on issues have sprung upon germany as a surprise a vote that issues that have been bubbling away in the background for quite some time now and you mentioned as well how germany for a long time was seen as a leader in environmental ism and leading the way in fighting climate change and somewhat some many of these issues were forgotten. and now it's time for germany not only race to keep up with other countries and other wildly those but to also really play catch up and now the question is whether they're really going to be

able to do that to keep hold of the status as a world leader and especially as a leader in europe as well did you get the sense of the people germany lost to the lead with even realizing it does that mean people have always talked about being green and doing the right thing for the environment i think with these issues it's that. money lost its priorities if you take climate change for just as one example they are still very much a conflict here in germany you're only have to go out into the street to see firsthand the german love affair with the famous cause it's something that germans really struggle with when it comes to dealing with climate change but what's special about these issues that we tackled in these in this little series here that we did this week is that these are all issues that are going to affect future generations and already as you saw from the reports over the last few days it seems

to be the younger generations that are really taking the bull by the horns here as well and saying ok how can we deal with this we saw earlier in the week a group of students in hyderabad here were dealing with the housing shortage and by building their own student dorms which of course shouldn't be the way forward this should be something that's been driven by berlin. federal and local state level as well many students who were going to build their own dorms anyway exactly this is an exception sure as were all of the cases that we found here but prime examples and i think what's really interesting as well though is how closely linked all of these topics are as well especially when you think of digitalize ation as well this is just going to become increasingly important to germany's future you've gone from berlin you've come to the countries are you going from east germany to what's germany what surprised you the most when you look at the whole trip i think that

having traveled around all four of those places it wasn't so much of a surprise it was more that it really did bring home the fact that all of these topics a link but also that they are not unique to individual places although we pinpointed locations to give yours and insight into how these issues are playing out in germany they are not individual. case is something that you need just to the. west and you see if you did see a kind of a rural urban divide. with the farmer for example you have no other internet as close as you can compare the problems that agriculture has out in rural germany to problems of agriculture in. the in the german capital that there isn't a comparison there but at the same time if you if you take the example of the lack of high speed internet. for example you don't have to walk down the street to suddenly not even have so much as three g. mobile network connection sometimes you can't even make phone calls and so in

a different way although it's an agriculture that's been affected that. still has a huge start up seen as more and more business as a one to move here and this is going to be a massive turn off for them if they consular muchas get a good internet connection when they're walking down the street tell me about it. thank you very much the great series of stories fascinating too about what's going on in the minds of germans thank you. sometimes new isn't always improved take australia the central bank there has confirmed that its latest batch of fifty dollar notes has the same word misspelled three times hundreds of millions of notes the bank says it will correct the misspelling at the next printing run. it just goes to show sometimes you have to read the fine print australia's high tech polymer banknotes are extremely hard to

counterfeit thanks to their highly detailed printing but evidently that technology doesn't include a spell checker the word responsibility is misspelled three times on the new us notes missing the last. but australians seem willing to overlook the error. well i guess with this instinct is that he's as cash anymore and certain quite a lot of people the note was printed forty six million times and that's one hundred thirty eight million missing eyes but yet you'd expect somebody to check and make sure that it's all correct before they suddenly print it has gone out to that many people then and then you expect it to be wrought australia's central bank says it will fix the error on the next series of notes later this year meaning that sometimes you just have to take responsibility however you write it. with a misspelling on the australian bank drew some predictable puns on twitter but
