this is t w news coming to you live from berlin president all trump tighten the screws in his trade dispute with china imposes new tariffs on billions of dollars worth of chinese goods and says there's no rush to make a deal what impact will this have on the global economy also coming up as right hilling company cooper makes his debut on wall street we look into the company's claims that it reduces congestion on the roads of the world's biggest city is. the homeless man in paris with thirty thousand twitter call he doesn't just get lots of likes but action two from the city authorities.
6:01 pm
hello i'm terry martin good to have you with us. breaking news coming in there's been another tragedy involving refugees from africa in the mediterranean sea it's one of the deadliest incidents so far this year in which migrants were trying to reach europe as many as seventy people are believed to have drowned when their boat sank near the tunisian coast the vessel was in international waters off the town of spock's south of the capital tunis the tunisian defense ministry says the boat had set sail from the libyan port of this awara aiming to reach italy. well for more on this story we're joined now by joel millman he's with the international organization for migration in geneva and he's in touch with his tunisian called leagues dealing with the situation joel first of all bring us up to
6:02 pm
date with what happened. well we're hearing both from tunisia and libya staff that we have on the field understand there were two rescues separately this afternoon or during the day today one of them was the one you mentioned we think at least fifty migrants drowned in that incident we think we know that sixteen survivors are not recovered we don't know how many more confirmed deaths we will hear about also surely there after shortly after this was recorded there was a had a rescue by the libyan coast guard of a boat carrying about one hundred one migrants we understand has two of them women and they had been taken back to rid of the city clothes so florida standing with this incident today we're talking about four hundred ninety three confirmed deaths on a mediterranean this year through this day maybe. one all well over half of those are just on the route between libya and italy ok let's talk
6:03 pm
just for a moment about that first boat you mentioned that first incident for we know there is a high number of casualties who were the refugees that were on that boat we know they sailed apparently sailed from libya but do we know where the refugees themselves were from. well we don't know for sure and that's the kind of information we usually get from survivors i think we had a chance to speak with him it's a little early in the day for that generally these incidents for the past year for quite a few years now have been dominated by sub-saharan africans saw some countries some more prominent good others then you have you know a large company a country like nigeria along with a lot of pretty strong pattern of migration to the south to europe trade if you stand out sort of buying with their spine away so we were never surprised to see a pretty broad makes but it's ok it's now it's entirely sub-saharan africa joel thank you very much for bringing us up to date there that was joel milne with the
6:04 pm
international organization for migration in geneva thank you. german turkish journalist denis you cho has claimed he was tortured in a high security turkish prison giving evidence to a court in berlin your child said that he was ashamed and hit the journalist spent a year behind bars without being formally charged the case triggered a diplomatic crisis between germany and turkey all what if a correspondent for the german newspaper de bed says he was systematically abused while being held in the turkish prison. they physically beat me by kicking my feet and beating my chest and back even though there were observe a shin cameras in the hallways there was no one inside the prison cells the amount of violence used against me was low level it wasn't about inflicting physical pain they wanted to humiliate and intimidate me maybe they also wanted to entice me to
6:05 pm
react but by the way this was definitely a case of torture. now let's bring in our correspondent bucks million akasha here in berlin. is standing by for us and let's start with you much million though what sort of hearing was this in berlin today why was dennis future in the german court of whole. well he was physically in a german court but the case he was giving a statement for was in fact for the prosecution trial that he's currently facing still in turkey so he was incarcerated in turkey until two thousand and eighteen and then was allowed to any of the country of return to germany and he's now allowed to give evidence and statements here in germany in front of german courts and these statements and then given forwards to the turkish trial and that is also why yes been giving his statement today in turkish not in german because this is for turkish trial giulia in istanbul serious allegations they're being leveled
6:06 pm
against turkey any response from turkish officials so far. well syria's allegations leveled against turkish president add on he. said today that it was added on who is personally responsible for the treatment he received here in the istanbul's a livery prison to quote him here again today this is possibly on direct orders of the president or his closes aides but in any case as part of the defamation campaign that he launched against me let's remember out on back then publicly called din is you joe a terrorist no officials so no official reaction so far from that might be due to the fact that they want don't want to give this and these accusations too much room too much space for public a debate but that speculation on my part to put the political situation here in istanbul and in turkey in general is quite tense right now the vote in istanbul has
6:07 pm
been canceled a vote that present ad once candidate narrowly lost so we kind of are back in an election campaign mode now so maybe it doesn't want to turn this into a bigger issue but one parliamentarian one politician part on with the a k party prison ad one party said that he doubts these accusations are true and i saw a report in a pro-government t.v. channel accusing then as you joe of lying and leading a defamation campaign quote against turkey but a million of politicians at least opposition politicians here in germany are calling for action to be taken. what consequences can we expect. well what we've heard so far is that of course the opposition parties have asked the german government especially the foreign ministry to summon the turkish ambassador to berlin and to have a frank conversation about what this means for the other german citizens that are
6:08 pm
still detained in turkey but we've also heard from governing party members for a session for the head of the parliamentary foreign relations committee to say that these allegations are deeply troubling as i quote and that they want to see consequences no relations between turkey and germany or already two million of those won't help things will it. well it's thirty one hell things but the question is what consequences can the german government implemented and what will these consequences actually. make happen so one of the requests that was put forward today is that germany should put in the votes to stop the accession talks between turkey and the european union but that request is questionable because what has already happened is that the european parliament has put in a symbolic actually not very effective while it's on stopping the accession talks
6:09 pm
with turkey the european parliament cannot decide that the but it's already been a sign that the european union doesn't want to go any further with having these kind of relations with turkey but at the other side this is something that even turkey doesn't seem to want anymore that hasn't been any more effort into coming closer to european countries for example like germany getting back to the allegations what can you tell us about the treatment of inmates in turkish prisons have there been other similar allegations of torture. well the government of president add publicly says they have zero tolerance for torture but local and international human rights organizations criticize that there is a wide range of detention abuses in turkish jails they are basing basing their claims on interviews with lawyers and victims of international for example reports that detainees in turkey all subjected to beatings and torture including
6:10 pm
a rape and this has happened especially here in turkey since the fails military coup in twenty sixteen remember when tens of thousands of people were detained and arrested nearly a thank you so much that was your johann our correspondent in istanbul and here in berlin mike's millionaire thank you very much to you but now to some of the other stories making news around the world today ruling african national congress is heading for victory in south africa's election despite gaining its lowest ever share of the both with the counting almost complete the a.n.c. has won fifty seven percent the party's worst performance in twenty five years president cyril relic poser of replaced scandal has jacob zuma last year. a militia set up to fight the islamist terror group boko haram has released nine hundred children that it had quote and the list it the civilian joint task force
6:11 pm
a regional militia allied with the nigerian military has signed an agreement to end child soldier recruit. the time activist who was jailed for sharing an unflattering article about thailand's king on facebook has been freed after a while pardon just a pot. run served more than two years behind bars it comes as three time activist facing charges of insulting the monarchy disappeared after reportedly being arrested in vietnam. now it's an international standoff that could have far reaching consequences for the global economy beijing says it will take what it calls necessary kelter measures after washington increased tariffs on some two hundred billion dollars worth of imports from china fears of a trade war are escalating the response from beijing was swift and announcement of
6:12 pm
countermeasures though without any details china's foreign ministry spokesman was restrained in his comments on the only phone we hope that the u.s. and china will work together to build a relationship based on coordination cooperation against the billing in this regard we hope the u.s. will meet us halfway donors nearly six thousand chinese product groups are affected but none that are already on route to the u.s. there transport which takes about two weeks could buy both sides some time but tension is growing this large electrican gardening to a manufacturer sells about forty percent of its products to the u.s. the new tariffs could have a heavy impact on the company in the short term there will reduce production of the . ice. rights are looking into different location for many years including i was still. german carmakers for
6:13 pm
example could be hit by chinese customs duties because many german cars produced in the u.s. are exported to china u.s. president trump had an upbeat reaction to a letter from the chinese leader xi jinping adding that an agreement with still possible this week negotiations resumed today. well joining us now to try to make sense of all this is clifford coonan from duty w. business good to have you clifford the tariffs that were imposed they came even though talks are ongoing between china and the united states so what's the strategy here well i think what we see is are two very different styles we have donald trump style which is quite aggressive into the deal sort of trying to show that these is strong and at a time when talks are ongoing he's kind of adding to the situation of. within the deal whereas the chinese are keeping we know very little about how decisions are
6:14 pm
made there so i think what we're seeing are two different styles of work and berber so trying to work out what's going on present trump of course he thinks that china has been taking advantage of the u.s. he thinks that terrorists will be good for the united states here's what he tweeted just a few hours ago. keris will bring in far more wealth to our country than even a phenomenal deal of the traditional kind he says also much easier and quicker to do our farmers will do better faster and starving nations can now be helped waivers on some products will be granted or go to a news source has been talking this up for quite some time saying this is going to be a great boon for for america but will these tariffs actually benefit american consumers clifford and producers as trump is implying or do they hurt everybody well i think
6:15 pm
the tower of bones ultimately help the u.s. consumer because they're going to go on to eventually the price increases will be passed on to the consumer and if certain areas that have been exempt from from tire of so far getting tooted for example if your i phone becomes more expensive in the u.s. i think consumers are going to feel that at the same time i think the conditions for the trade talks about making greater market access and things i thought if all of those conditions are met and if there is a deal in the trade in the trade conflict then i think that would definitely benefit the u.s. consumers so there's two very different strains at work here so this is this is president trump trying to up the pressure on the chinese during the negotiations hoping to extract more from those negotiations china has been as you say their brother a paik hard to figure out what they're thinking but they say they will retaliate what do you think we can expect will have several options if they really wanted to go nuclear so to speak they could. they could basically organize a boycott of u.s. goods in china we've seen they've done that before with south korea they don't know
6:16 pm
which japan to devastating effect i think they're probably unlikely to do that i think what they will do more likely is retaliate re tariffs which would put pressure on things like boeing aircraft semiconductors and i think that's probably the more likely outcome but again it's a difficult one for them to make because. they want to be able to reach a deal ultimately and some of these tariffs are going to be quite hard to roll back so but i think initially there will be some sort of retaliation remove the inductor action there's been talk about this having this trade dispute that the u.s. is having with china because of how much is at stake here that this could have an impact on the global economy what do you see this what does this mean for the rest of the world well i think everyone is feeling it i'm in europe their feeling is it's creating uncertainty. you know we've been talking a little bit about the markets you know you mention the markets the markets were up initially the kind of dow now again you know because i don't think anyone knows the
6:17 pm
direction they're going so i think overall this time of uncertainty doesn't doesn't suit anyone and i think people are going to be looking for a much clearer resolution on things and they want to see a deal because ultimately a deal is going to be the win win for both of us china and the rest of the world clifford thanks for brains up today clifford conan from d.w. business in venice while a two lawmakers have sought refuge in foreign embassies says the government widens its crackdown on the allies of opposition leader. this comes a day after authorities arrested the vice president of the opposition controlled national assembly the rest have put renewed pressure on a wide oh who's attempted uprising last week failed to oust president nicolas maduro. for supporters of one quiet though the aftermath of last week's coup attempt is proving dangerous stripped of their immunity by the supreme court richard blanco of the brief people's alliance and a movie called i cannot see a of the radical cause party has sought safety at the embassies of argentina and

those they want to take prisoners on it but i have. quantock why do said someone was arrest is part of a government intimidation campaign. when it nobody got i mean the guy would be what is the only tool they have used because it was you know present territory police state terrorism to be clear. because that's what they were doing and sitting terror among the people when he said what they're going to do is you know i don't know why though has called for fresh protests on saturday but with his uprising flagging zambrano as a rest could demoralize the opposition and enfold and president nicolas maduro and his loyalists. their spring called a milestone for the ride healing industry earlier today over marked its. much anticipated stock market debut of the san francisco based company was floated forty five dollars a share trading will show if investor appetite matches the valuation.

but despite excitement on wall street it's a decidedly bumpier ride for over on main street in the same week drivers went on strike over working conditions a new study is putting a dent in one of the central claims reporter william no a good cross joins me now with the story hey william and harry so tell us about the study what did it find right so one of the central claims is companies like google and lift will reduce congestion and reduce traffic problems in cities because you don't need your own private car so experts transit experts at the university of kentucky want to see if this were true they were asked by the san francisco transit authority to look into the san francisco being one of america's most congested cities and home to her and lift and what they found was no this claim is not true it doesn't hold up to the reporting and fact over the six years from two thousand and ten two thousand and sixteen when new bern left really getting popular congestions however cisco went up more than sixty percent most of that was attributable to lift this the experts were able to factor out of the study and saw
6:21 pm
that there was a much lower congestion rate without them but what this is really showing is congestion went up both because of lift traffic on the roads and private cars on the road so from both sources or congestion in a place like san francisco now this study zoomed in on san francisco that's the home of what about the hundreds of other cities and in countries around the world are similar problems being reported there absolutely so a lot of these studies because this is an american company is focused on american cities but we see this around the world where congestion is a major problem as population expands and urban centers and infrastructure struggles to keep up in cities all around the world. you know looking at of a major study from last year looking at nine major metro areas again in the united states five point seven billion extra miles of driving from lift traffic in the cities and more than six hundred thousand at the same time six hundred thousand
6:22 pm
private cars being added to the road at the same time so you see this correlation between who burned live traffic and private traffic going up together at the same time one not canceling out the other now of course goober and lift dispute these findings they say you know the the methodology wasn't accurate there's lots of different aspects to congestion which is true but at least either now or in the future want to get into all these aspects of of congestion of traffic whether it's freight whether it's commercial whether it's ferrying tourists around so goober can't have it both ways saying we want to be involved in all these areas of traffic but we're not to blame for extra congestion and similar ride hilling services are booming for consumers it's convenience and seems cheap drivers seem easy enough to find even though many are complaining what's to stop hooper and co from continuing to grow rapidly i mean it's a little bit hard to talk about climate change and sustainable livable cities in the same sentence that we're we're heralding right hailing apps and this is the
6:23 pm
future of mobility whether it's in the united states where around the world we see major inequality differences again this study from last year show that people earning over two hundred thousand dollars a year are much more likely nine times likelier to take an hour or a lift whereas poor people people earning less than fifty thousand dollars a year taking public transit so this is a difficult way to create cities being sustainable and climate friendly one focusing on private transport william thank you so much william know a good. reporter. now paris you may know paris as a wealthy and fashionable city but like many other cities it has its own homeless population people living on the streets one of them started using social media to draw attention to what it's like living rough and he soon collected more than thirty thousand twitter followers and got the ear of city authorities that was the
6:24 pm
start of a passionate fight for better living conditions for the homeless in paris. christian college knows what it means to lead an insecure unstructured life he spent over three years hanging out with this group of homeless people at the plus sun mart in paris p. used to have a well paying job as a samir but after his wife left him he developed a drinking problem and when he could no longer pay the rent he ended up on the streets and. this is one of the places i slept in but a few weeks later they installed these typically anti homeless barriers in their place deliberately so no one can bed down here. and he homeless barriers have popped up all over parents some in places where people sleep due to warm air from the metro christian reacts to them by tweeting with results. the city of paris had put in iron rods to
6:25 pm
prevent access you can still see the traces. they would have stopped people from being able to sleep there in winter when it's cold. i posted it on twitter and the next day the authorities removed the iron rods. from is a good. christian began tweeting three years ago after his possessions were soaked by street cleaners in winter he wrote this is how the homeless are treated in paris within a few months he had over thirty thousand followers. in the morning to say hello to the planet and at night to talk about what was going on on the streets. i take a picture of my sleeping bag and say good night guys i think go to bed. and people would answer good night see you tomorrow what i thought that was cool.
6:26 pm
people who live on the streets often feel like pariahs but christian party has given them a voice and his activism has spread beyond paris people now sending pictures of paris elsewhere in france. this one's in front of an even more shared store in not in the country south. it's true that the social media have a certain power that can be negative for big brands and. we'll see in the next few days that evil shape will certainly get rid of those barriers. christian is glad that his tweets can change things for the better. his own situation has also improved is no longer living on the streets but has found accommodation with a christian aid organization. you're watching t.v. news coming up next in asia north korea launches more missiles as kim jong un orders his military into full combat posture what does this mean for south koreans
