message needs to be getting out that. if you deal with that pollution you deal with climate change advice it needs to be something that it's on everybody's lips yet every single day. people becoming aware of the. brussels defacto cup throughout the european union was also seen of climate change protests some 15000 people took to the streets ahead of you parliamentary elections. first of all we want to show the politicians that we have to move forward on those issues they don't seem to act so a 2nd motivation for us is to raise awareness among the population organize it stressed that saving the planet goes beyond the focus on the environment. to solve the climate issue we'll have to rethink the global organisation of our society it's clear that now it is there's a tendency to oppose people who protest for the climate and those who protest to increase their purchasing power we think it's possible the policies which combined

nixon it's all part of his attempts to highlight the tangible impact of climate change as he leads up into his timber climate action scholars in new york were it hopes to convince countries from all around the world tangible actions that can be done to achieve the goals they committed to in paris not in the paris of cool ok you mentioned heading on to walk to fiji for those islands there at a special risk of rising sea levels water is plans there. so the secretary general has announced that he's going to meet with families that have been struck by rising sea levels flooding and other extreme climate events as a way of highlighting the kind of tangible impact that climate change is already having he's also planning to meet with the pacific islands forum leaders meeting there to kind of coordination with many of the leaders of nations around the world in the lead up to that climate action summit in new york city peter mckenzie for us

in wellington new zealand thanks very much for that. it's to india now where voters have been casting their ballots in the world's biggest parliamentary election some 900000000 people eligible to vote there unable in them to do so is a mammoth logistical operation that's why there isn't just one election day for those 900000000 people instead voting takes place in 7 phases across different regions now the election began back on the health of 11th of april runs until the 19th of may election died lines in the cape that voters should have to travel no more than 2 kilometers to cast their ballot so $1000000.00 polling stations will be set up across the country that's already of course been done so to reach voters in even the remotest areas and once voters and every constituency have actually cast their ballots well results are then due to be announced on may the 23rd

government funded schools offering of coffee but they suffer from teacher absences for infrastructure and a lack of facilities the ruling party in delhi is trying to bridge that gap. we are the party a common man spartan is holding a rally instead of. education is essential competition. the party says it's transformed public schools in the capital and since it came to power in $2013.00 and a succeeded in creating a more level playing field. the government's work in education seems to paid off at this public school admissions a full. delhi government says it has new classrooms and is constructing another $12000.00. its trade policy as more teachers and started special classes for children falling behind many of them 1st generation

in the city she's now considering sending money to one of them don't get it david am. from delhi i'm joined now by did you sign your fall a car or put out a report together for us good morning sania education as we saw there is a top priority in delhi the indian capital has a been a a major issue in this general election nationwide. well you know the answer is no you know i mean the party that rules daily the aam aadmi party is really one of the few issues based party in india you know it started to fall in 2013 on the back of an anti corruption movement and since then it has carried out a lot of work in the field of public education and health care and it's really rattled a lot of mainstream parties with the kind of middle class of voters but you know elsewhere in this election we really haven't seen this issue be taken up there's a lot of noise and rhetorical around things like nationalism things like national
8:13 am
security but it's drowned out more substantive issues like jobs and education you know as you reported on your quality education is out of reach for so many and india how much is this responsible for perpetuating high levels of economic inequality. well that is you know there is a stock divide across india between public education and private education so you know those who can afford to send their children to do a good private school those of conscious are stuck with you know inferior state education so that does remain a big problem now there are some attempts had to kind of address these inequalities in 2012 india pasta law that requires private schools to reserved a certain number of seats to it to offer a certain quarter of the seats to 2 children from poor economic backgrounds that sounds very good on paper but in reality it's a very bureaucratic system very difficult to navigate and these kinds of inequality
8:14 am
is are also seen in higher education you know in colleges and universities where in the one hand you have kind of elite universities like the indian institutes of management technology and on the other hand you have you know millions of students who go to kind of if you vasili inferior colleges and universities where the emphasis is still very much on cramming on growth learning on side and not taking really at the expense of analysis and critical thinking ok is the government under any. pressure to change or at least address these these inequalities in education. where you don't have more than half in this population is under the age of 25 and these people require jobs they face a big jobs crisis but in a sense they also face a big education crisis because you know quality of education remains a big problem in india and that is one of the biggest hurdles in these young people getting good enough jobs you know employers in india often talk about how fresh graduates lack you know basic skills like good communication
8:15 am
a good command to finish the ability to not think independently and assess problems so i think there is certainly pressure on the government to change that song if. thanks very much for coming in this morning and for your report as well. now let's check in with some of the other stories making the news at this hour voters in the philippines been casting their ballots in the term elections many see this vote as a referendum on president a real go to tear to his rise to power the most crucial races for half the seats in the 24 member senate which the territory is expected to fill with political allies . president trump has defended his tariff policy after imposing punitive duties on some $200000000000.00 worth of chinese imports on twitter he wrote we are right where we want to be with china the presence accuses beijing of reneging on commitments and trade talks. and the u.s. has issued a new warning to maritime traffic over alleged acts of sabotage of ships in the
8:16 am
gulf region this comes as the u.s. reported that 4 commercial ships off its eastern coast were damaged by sabotage saudi arabia's as a 2 of its oil tankers were sabotaged in the same area. all saying in that region iran is said to be high on the agenda of european union foreign ministers meeting in brussels today but we look at ways to salvage the iran nuclear deal after the us pulled out completely and iran itself partially withdrew from it tehran has threatened to begin enriching uranium again europe's answer will not bow to ultimatums. last week's informal summit in romania was supposed to be about setting a strategic agenda for the e.u. but the assembled leaders had to grapple with the iran issue 1st they stressed the need for diplomacy. to say what we have to be very realistic about the means we have but all i can say about iran is that this country with its
8:17 am
recognition of a diplomatic approach has a chance to make clear that it wants peaceful solutions in my view it's also in iran's interest to continue to on of this agreement to begin. under the 2050 nuclear deal iran agreed to let the international atomic energy agency monitor its nuclear facilities and enrich uranium only for civilian purposes in return economic sanctions on the country were lifted. the international atomic energy agency says iran has been meeting at side of the bargain but the u.s. withdrew from the deal last year and reinstated sanctions now iran is threatening to enrich its uranium closer to weapons grade levels. but if these countries return to the table within 60 days and we reach agreement on oil sales and banking then we will uphold our side of the nuclear deal him. given everything else on the table

including upcoming european parliamentary elections that leaves little room for the block to maneuver. talk more about the political correspondent ripper bit of all here in the morning report a germany and a number of other you countries want of course to try to salvage the iran nuclear deal is there any chance that they could do that while the europeans are in the a bit a little bit in-between lines here specially as the iran nuclear deal that was their baby that was their big success in 2015 and considering iran the europeans think well iran as we've already heard in the report that kept its side of the bargain and we will see this again in the next upcoming report of the international atomic energy agency which is again is going to say iran did everything it said it was going to do so the europeans don't really have very much to to offer to iran and the europeans wanted to help them by installing some sort of

a trade agency agency with which they hoped to work around the u.s. sanctions that didn't really work out at all and they conquered he pushed their own companies to go against the sanctions and to make business but still iran's. there's not very much that can do ok in the u.s. of course has been pivotal and all of this what's the state of the discussions right now between the u.s. and the e.u. on iran while the e.u. foreign secretaries are meeting today on the foreign secretary my pump aoe if the united states as we have heard is traveling to brussels today he bolted his travel plans again he's going to meet with his colleagues from france from germany and the u.k. and then he's going to talk with them about this iran nuclear deal more of a could be done but he could have done that already last week he was. meant to meet here with his foreign secretary colleague in germany last week but he counseled the meeting just before i run said they want the they are going to withdraw from the

supreme and. this actually shows how bad the situation is especially between germany and the united states there isn't very much of a talk to handle left anymore especially that the germans unhappy on how the u.s. is treating them because they don't really have the feeling that they are being heard in washington in these discussions that we're going to see today as we look at an escalation in the region there's been a step up and the deployment of naval units from the united states we've seen the sabotage of vessels in the region as well now also shuttled the poll policy how concerned is berlin right now that there could be a spark of some type of military confrontation in this region where he worried although they don't think that the u.s. really wants a war that iran really wants a war but we have seen situations like this in the past for you all from just a little spark is needed to start
