has lost another lawsuit related to the weed killer roundup made by recently acquired monsanto it will have to pay $2000000000.00 to the plaintiffs a couple from california. we've been finding cancer for. 9 years now hound in the knee. it was caused by a round of. speech the ground up was the cause of the couple's cancer and the both had a long history of illness the company wants to appeal the verdict it was the 3rd consecutive verdict against bias since its 63000000000 dollars takeover of monsanto it is currently facing another $13400.00 claims. until then joins us now from business this hour a $2000000000.00 fine for this couple just this couple we're talking $13400.00 more claims i can do the math did buy it do the math did buy it know what it was getting itself into well buyer certainly knew that they were going to face

a wave of litigation as soon as they acquired month santo they actually put aside 250000000 euros to kind of help cushion this legal blow that they were going to be facing united states because as you said there are 2000000000 in punitive damages are nowhere near enough not even close to it and this is just from one case you know you have to we also have to admit they've you know they've lost 3 cases in as many years and with 13000 pending it really does seem like they they underestimated the scope of the troubles they were going to be facing is that reflected in bias share price today oh it certainly is i mean since the acquisition which you know they spent an incredible amount of money to buy a monsanto they spent $63000000000.00 euros and since the acquisition their share price has been cut in half and that's really really gone into their detriment and also in its results and kind of a shareholder revolt at $1.00 of the recent meetings they actually censored the management and issued a vote of no confidence so i mean this isn't going over well with shareholders and ways are going to go is the shareholders revoking to grow well that really kind of
10:33 am
remains to be seen as you mentioned there's $13000.00 cases pending against them and the company management has said well you know we have to evaluate each case in and of itself this isn't a class action lawsuit but you really have to you know kind of take a take a look at this and say when they're losing case after case after case it doesn't really bode well for future results these cases are going to have an effect one in each other but by really does seem to be taking the long game you know they say that monsanto's patents will be necessary to help feed the growing world population estimate sale beef looking at like 10000000000 people in the next century and some of the. modified food patents that monsanto. has. will be key to feeding them at least that's buyer's perspective but the question really does remain to be seen can they weather this storm the criticism from shareholders and also this huge financial burden that all of these lawsuits in the states are bringing against them so what did by the wrong obviously it hasn't put enough money aside was it too

ambitious it basically wanted to rule the world as far as the agricultural sector goes and a great. great pairing up of 2 companies one that's in control of the seeds market one that's in control of chemicals put them together and you do have fun. well i definitely think you're right on paper it does look like a great deal but i think they kind of. mis under as or underestimated the popular backlash that monsanto is facing i mean on paper the environmental protection agency in the states says life's a bit based products are safe the european union says the same thing however there are reports from the world health organization that's a life was it most likely causes cancer and in the 3 court cases we've been discussing today the juries all sided with the world health organization no i think that was a danger that buyer underestimated and as an incision today we've seen we've seen
10:35 am
that it's really kind of biting them so could this backfire for the company could we end up saying by having to sell off monsanto get rid of monsanto shareholders demand that we see a whole new batch but well i mean like you said that that really remains to be seen if the stock price continues to fall we could really be looking at a much larger shareholder revolt and you know we also have to see what that means for their bottom line i mean if if they're most likely not going to have to pay the 2000000000 in punitive damages is most likely on appeal that the number will be reduced however if they keep having to pay damages in court case after court case after court case that could have major effect on the bottom line and you know if that's the case anything's possible. sounds like a share that yeah i would get off with it that's my opinion i wouldn't put my money there either thank you very much for coming in if you forget that shares got that sinking feeling let's take a look at the numbers today on global stock exchanges the year long trade war

between the united states and china has escalated so much for resolution. in taiwan shares fell sharply at the opening but have largely recovered by noon the hang sang also took a hit dropping by 1.5 percent asian markets followed what was the worst day for wall street so far this year on monday the dow jones dropped over 600 points on news of chinese tariffs we see that really got hit today are things like the chip sector some of the industrials. broadly speaking china's response to washington's latest tariffs was a swift as it was predictable beijing has said that beginning on june the 1st it will impose additional tariffs of 5 to 25 percent on $60000000000.00 worth of u.s. imports. raising tariffs will not solve any problems. but china will never surrender to external pressure we have the determination and the

ability to safeguard our legitimate rights and interests despite beijing's bluster by setting the june the 1st date rather than making the retaliatory measures immediate china at least appears to believe that the 2 economic powers can find a resolution. of spondon for the private stock exchange afterthoughts pandey what is the likelihood of a resolution. well ben it's definitely not a stun gun feeling here the analysts and investors are hopeful that the deal will still be reached and this is that the june 1 that the great spirit certainly offers an opportunity of window of opportunity for a neighbor she had to deal and sign on the dotted lines. because a trade war is not good for anybody and both sides do realize this just yesterday like $600000000000.00 was wiped out of the s. and p. $500.00 and that's more than the total chinese imports annually to the u.s.

russia georgia trump says trade was a reason to win so what's the next step. well then the navy see asians will go on. president trump him self has indicated that he was hopeful of a deal and tried to soothe nerves yesterday and he's going to meet the chinese vessel in. japan on the sidelines the g 20 and investors would be hoping that the 2 leaders will the charm on each other and a deal is reached and of course this dispute doesn't just involve china or the u.s. but living in a globalized world and economy how exposed to european companies that do business in the united states. well the european listed companies are expected to generate 1.2 trillion euros of revenue from the u.s. now you see what's at stake for the european companies i mean europe is going to really suffer if there is going to be a protracted trade war now donald trump has already warned of riders against

hundreds of european goods he said that the auto sector is already what it. is expected to take a decision on tabs on car imports later this week and european economy does not make it so resilient as the chinese for a protracted trade war so what is president on willing to open the trade for what on another front is something only he knows as a transponder with the analysis for us from the french stock exchange. german cities have been trying out all sorts of things to clear the air following the diesel scandal vehicle restrictions strict speed limits and now a giant vacuum cleaner that's meant to eliminate all the nasties from the air we breath. a new filter for a new type of vacuum cleaner this one doesn't collect crumbs off the carpet though

it takes particular matter and nitrogen dioxide out of the air once said 21000 euros 17 of them are mounted it stood guard snecker gate the pollution hotspot. technology is much like an outsized vacuum cleaner it's an industrial filter assembly which uses around a 1000 watts per unit that's roughly how much a normal vacuum cleaner uses but this is a 100 times more effective we can suck about 10000 cubic meters of air through the filter. initial results show the filters can reduce particulates matter and nitrogen dioxide by as much as 30 percent this is completely caked with dust. the idea is to keep pollution down to within mandated limits without burning older diesels from the city center but the new filters to substitute for environmentally friendly things like electric cars quite the

opposite. this is certainly not a futuristic solution but will need a mixture of varying measures to cut emissions down right from the beginning that means a generally sustainable transportation system with more public transport more bikes and pedestrians and then where it's needed to employ some kind of tailor made environmental of keith using things like filter units or high tech road surfacing it's the mix that will be decisive. this is a mobile open air vacuum cleaner a research project. the filter removes the same amount of particulates matter from the air that the vehicle produces. it may look cumbersome but it could be mounted beneath a delivery van or truck the manufacturer expects the largest market for filter technology to be in asia. we're developing a core technology here in germany of course but we're focusing on markets like china india korea japan and singapore the exponential industrialization there has
