ironic said cisco is banning facial recognition technology once signed into law it will be the 1st american city to make it illegal for local government agencies to obtain retain access or use the surveillance it doesn't apply federally or to private companies. send francisco home to many of the world's tech planers is blazing a new path it's restricting the use of facial recognition technology by the local government. it's psychologically unhealthy when people know they're being watching every aspect of the public realm out on the streets in parks that's not the kind of city i will ever give this as the difference whether the technology can still be used by the us federal government and private businesses in san francisco but. facial recognition technology is already in use the world over at airports on social media at sporting events and even in smartphones. big players

like amazon facebook and i.b.m. make billions helping both private companies and governments utilize their software for $1000000000.00 industries expected to quadruple in size over the next decade. here in berlin the german government has started experimenting with the technology at public train stations after a terror attack at a christmas market in 2016. and companies maintain facial recognition software can improve consumers' lives like at this market in china where cameras automatically identify consumers and charge purchases to their account. thank you jack how is the critics of the technology say china's extensive use of facial identification software should serve as a cautionary tale. the country's camera surveillance systems tracked millions of its citizens automatically. the government has even outfitted taxis with cameras that automatically identify passengers and log their trips in

a central register officially to improve consumer safety however critics warn such uses are an invitation to government abuse. and we've got our business to talk more about this topic is this the start of a trend that well that really remains to be seen you have to remember what we're seeing in san francisco is just an initiative from several local politicians and local government it's a measure which will only apply to local agencies that means the u.s. federal government will still be allowed to use facial recognition technology as well will be investigators from the from the national government and the transportation authority eccentrics after etc private companies as well so right now it's still a small measure but you know we're talking about it right here so it could kick off a debate which we is actually i think quite unnecessary debate both inside the united states and around the world in terms of how this technology will be used and surely this will get people thinking about whether or not this technology is good for us or yes i definitely think it will because i mean facial recognition
10:34 am
technology is kind of this broad idea we're using it in so many different realms already it's used for security at port said airports around the world it's also used in our cell phones it's use in social media i mean we're seeing this in every facet of our life already but it's still a very unrelated space i mean one example that's always kind of appeared to me is people use the whole idea of online tracking basically companies following the motions online but using facial recognition technology that could be brought out into the real world companies can quite easily set up cameras in their stores and then can use those cameras in this technology to create a profile of our movements what we're looking at who are interacting with and that really kind of takes this whole idea of digital surveillance out into the real world in the kind of a way i don't think people are really aware of. at the moment. someone running a quickie mart can set it up and fill the customers get to know because it was a little better i guess but there are laws in the making as well they could ban

them from doing that unless they get the consent of the customer. so we see it on different levels here trading our society and the way we live oh yes definitely we do i mean this is this is being used as i said already in so many different spheres of life and i really don't think there's kind of a conscience of that i mean we're seeing that already here in germany as well i mean and one of the train stations just around the corner from where i live there are cameras set up where the german government is attempting to see exactly how how these technologies can use new german context and what exactly the legal framework that it would need to actually be able to use a so this is really really broadening out and is kind of changing how this whole idea of digital surveillance impacts our lives directly on a day to day basis that people shouldn't only be worried about this because of the lack of regulation but also because of the inaccuracy of the technology will certainly i mean it's still very early days in terms of technology i mean we've only really been talking about it in a real kind of mature way for about 1015 years at this point and you know of course

there are problems with identifying women apparently also people of darker skin complection and also i mean there are very low tech ways to get around it i mean there are people online who've demonstrated that using this a certain pattern of make up lines in the face they can completely get around the technology in there i recently saw an example where someone actually had a picture just a picture of basically a little mountain scenery it was arranged in such a way that if you held it up the camera couldn't identify any more so i mean yes there are incredible ways to get around it and so we really don't know exactly what the take technology is capable of and how it should be or could be used in our daily lives thanks for the make up that next time i come into work i have to think about that thank you to get in front of a camera and film that like you. financial markets have been heading north ever since donald trump tweeted that a trade deal with china could come any time that is if the time is right for the u.s. president probably won't meet his chinese counterpart until the end of june and they've both just hiked a whole lot of tats. big juicy american steaks sizzling on the grill

in shanghai it seems that regardless of donald trump's beef with the chinese over trade chinese consumers have no beef with american meat. but exhibitors peddling american foods at asia's biggest food fair say that what trump calls a squabble has been disastrous for business and. our business has him being that impacted by the trade war by almost 30 percent. and the but as a company we are impacted but we have options to go to 100 other countries but they are the biggest impact is going to is the consumer in china or the consumer in the u.s. they're both more impacted because of higher prices some u.s. exporters have decided that they can absorb some of the cost of the trade war in the short term in order to keep their markets but it's not

a situation they'd like to see continue for long that is you know it's a good job that it's an all good value above us sometimes out if we spawn some of the increased cost and so have had dealers and sellers so you consumers won't have to pay 25 percent more for our products that's the one we're now hanging on here we still hope that that's the trade tension can be solved soon and that prices can go back to normal as soon as possible right if you don't see how much out of little pain when. american farmers keep out of trump's political base are increasingly frustrated with the failure of the 2 sides to resolve the dispute trump has promised around $15000000000.00 in i define him as affected by the chinese tariffs . germany has managed to dodge recession official figures show the economy expanding by point 4 percent in the 1st quarter driving factors with the mess the consumption and a boom in the construction sector a trade war and break said. i have been putting the brakes on for the growth of the

german government and leading economic institutes recently scaled back their growth for costs for the year as a whole. i should touch monday joins us now from the frankfurt stock exchange avatar so a glimmer of hope today for growth in europe stop economy. yes ben the numbers certainly dispel concerns about a long term slowdown in germany but having said that germany is still not out of the woods i mean as you mentioned there are concerns about the escalation in this trade spat between china and the u.s. both are key markets for german exports then the auto sector remains worried because they don't know what is going to decide about tariffs on auto imports from the euro zone and remember germany actually is accounts for around 70 percent of the total of vehicles imported to the u.s. so that's going to be huge and that's going to be something that's concerns the

investors in the future. concerned i living here in europe's biggest economy growth is on track things are looking a little bit better than we thought but is point 4 percent something to get excited about. yes yes definitely in the current scenario is something to get excited about especially when you see where you coming from just 2 quarters back you were in a recession to 3 loss in the 4th quarter of last year the g.d.p. was flat so definitely come for much ahead of where we were 2 quarters back but there are concerns about what i mentioned and if and if donald trump is going to. not impose any tatters it could only get better from here because the job numbers are looking great the wages are solid that means good person consumption household spending is going to stay robust so it all depends on
