w. this is t w news coming to you live from berlin he played the president in a t.v. show now he's set to become the real president of ukraine comedian bolivia selenski will take the oath of office to start his term as ukraine's new leader he has no political experience so what's his plan for the country we'll go live to kiev. after 6 weeks of voting india's marathon election is finally over it's being called a referendum on prime minister narendra modi so is he headed for

a 2nd term and what could this mean for the country. also coming up that unusual anniversary here in germany these documents at the core of the country's democracy the basic law was enacted 70 years ago speaks to put the stock president. about what it means for today's. well i'm terry martin thanks for joining us former actor and comedian volodymyr selenski is set to be sworn in as ukraine's president today so he won a landslide victory in last month's election but has said little in public since then he has no political experience other than playing the president in a television sitcom now as the new leader of ukraine he will face a host of challenges as nick connolly reports on what ukrainians are expecting from
8:02 am
him. was it was a result that even simmons himself seemingly couldn't quite believe 73 percent almost 3 quarters of ukrainian voters had put their trust in him as the political newbie a man who would only announce his intention to run in just a few months before a face familiar to almost all ukrainians from television but someone who had never been involved in politics let alone run for office. for incumbent petro poroshenko it was a stinging defeat losing to zelinsky in all but one ukraine's regions his pitch to the nation as commander in chief as the man who had kept ukraine in its army together in the face of russian aggression had fallen on deaf ears simply in the weeks since his sensational victory selenski is kept out of the limelight making only a handful of appearances most of them on social media as ukraine's parliament squabbled
8:03 am
over the timing of the inauguration but what is it the ukrainians are really expecting any new president to do. i don't really know what to expect but i'm hoping for the best i've had enough of all the old faces in politics you know. i have a good face corruption in our country is that's the main thing. is that measures that we support selenski let's see what to expect from him as president hasn't made an official appearance yet told us what to expect. in his fictional inauguration as president and the serious servant of the people zelinsky charms his audience by throwing stuffy protocol overboard and refusing to speak well behaved like a politician. whether the real presence alinsky will manage to pull off the same feat as the country's most famous rock musician says he too plans to launch a new party. nick connelly joins us now from outside the ukrainian parliament
8:04 am
in kiev nick a t.v. sitcom actor who played the president is about to be sworn in as the real thing in ukraine this must be a surreal moment for ukrainians while quite terry there were moments in the campaign where it was pretty difficult to distinguish between fact and fiction selenski using clips from the series in which he played a president for his campaign to become a real life president but i think ukrainians have got used to this idea surprisingly quickly and it really takes that outside perspective to really get a sense of what how unusual situation is having said that he doesn't seem to be the last showbiz import of politics we heard there in the report because shook ukraine's most famous rock musician saying he now was that of a party to contest parliamentary elections so ukraine's politics really never boring. selenski has no political experience what qualities do you craniums see in him that they think could make him a good leader. i think terry to kind of really understand these
8:05 am
elections you've got to see them more as a vote against petro poroshenko the incumbent and that generation of politicians ukrainians told us time and time again they were fed up with corruption and the poverty that creates the low standards of living as a lens he was able to channel that frustration very effectively to sell himself as the representative of a new generation a new style in politics without going into too much detail of what exactly he was planning to do so people really willing to vote for anyone but the people they'd say the same faces they'd seen for years before and obviously had a very easy job of that given that most ukrainians knew his face from t.v. he didn't have to explain who he was he had that instant recognizability and we've seen these very good campaign he really broke the rules of order repeats of campaigns doing mainly online we've got to see now how good he'll be at day to day politics so. biggest asset it sounds like is the fact that he's an outsider with
8:06 am
a familiar face do we know anything about selenski plans for the country. well he spoke about breaking the corrupt system that has really kept ukraine back and really prevented it from really translating its huge potential into a good standard of living for its people about taking immunity away from politicians from members of parliament and the president giving people more of a say on the way the country is run through referendums but those are all pretty abstract aspirations for now to have it's also been a lot of criticism of his closeness to the oligarch who of the channel that made him famous in the 1st place this is someone who was big enemy of petro poroshenko and has now returned to the country to call of uncertainty there about the actual nitty gritty of his politics he hasn't given any interviews since winning the election has kept very quiet prefer instead to his advisors talk so i think the real question the real test will now be if he's able to get a parliamentary majority because this president he called do most of these things
8:07 am
without his own force in parliament he's now trying to pull parliament elections forward to really make the most of his high poll ratings and really have a chance of really turning this country on its head but obviously his opponents are doing their best to. nick thank you so much they do as nick connelly there in kiev . well elections to the european parliament take place this week and opinion polls suggest populist and nationalist parties could do very well on sunday tens of thousands of people rallied in cities across europe to protest against the surge of the far right to support show their support for the e.u. . a show of love for the european union. but tough love. in cities across europe tens of thousands join pro e.u. an anti nationalist rallies like here in germany urging people to not vote for nationalists but also urging europe to do much better many protesters worry that
8:08 am
nationalist parties could make substantial gains across the continent. as i think you have to send a signal against nationalism you just have to make it public i don't know if there's anything to stop people from choosing an end to democratic party but we have to show that many are against it and. i think through the european parliament election a signal can already be sent about it and i think it would clearly be against rex's and yes i also hope that the election goes in the direction of centrist policies and to the left and that there isn't a populist advance hundreds of civil society organizations back the rallies calling for better climate change policy and a more humane stance towards migrants but as the 28 e.u. members prepare for next weekend's vote poll suggests they feel is a justified centrist set to lose while far right nationalists and n.t.e.u. parties are expected to gain. austria's president has called for a snap elections in early september after
8:09 am
a corruption scandal brought down the coalition government the announcement follows the release of secret footage taken in 2017 showing vice chancellor heinz question of the far right freedom party apparently offering lucrative government contracts to a russian investor and exchange for political favors stock a resigned after the video was released by 2 german publications. in the form of bedroom of holy roman imprest maria teresa austria's president and the chancellor announced the election date following the collapse of the governing coalition the vote will be earlier than planned they have plenty of a few i recommend new elections in september. what they didn't mention is whether austria's current cabinet will remain in office until the vote or be replaced with interim ministers that includes portfolios controlled by the far right freedom party we think is the most important thing now is to ensure full disclosure of these events
8:10 am
all of the videos suspicious details have to be examined this video is a given people have to be ardent. which might prove tricky with an interior ministry led by the freedom party's habit. there are questions as to whether he can be trusted to clarify heinz christians tatas misconduct or examine allegations of abuse of office bribery and illegal party financing the opposition is calling for an independent investigation. c is a snortin big i think the investigators should be experts and not members of the ministries involved it's ok nick i'm to be on this was the freedom party is holding talks at a secret location interior minister kittle is not eager to step down according to party sources for political analysts that doesn't come as a surprise this was kicking pickle is trying to keep his party colleagues motivated
8:11 am
it's a sign of the freedom party returning to its defensive siege mentality that's what the at the if they had to get a look here at the wild conspiracy theories in connection with the abuser video are now making the rounds with the right wing populists but chancellor could swell probably have to deal with the freedom party ministers to get anything done. after stopping the mention of the government stability can mean a lot of things but you certainly doesn't want to risk an open conflict within the government and don't forget in 4 months an interior minister can accomplish a lot of his political agenda in a minister after a good boy and he is off the big butting at following the fateful meeting on my base and they were further contacts between a confidant of striker and the presumed russian investor that's according to the german daily sued dortch upside on the drunken taylor's talk because it seems unlikely to be a one off misstep in a drunken stupor additional investigations will certainly be necessary. now to some

of the other stories making headlines around the world today u.s. president donald trump has tweeted a stark warning to tehran writing if iran wants to fight that will be the official end of iran never threaten the united states again remarks come in response to comments from iran's revolutionary guard saying it is not afraid of war. google has suspended business with chinese communications giant huawei this could mean that new huawei smart parents will be shut out of popular google apps like g. mail and due to the last week trumping ministration out it while away to a trade blacklist amid accusations of spying for the chinese government always denies claims. butting in india's national elections has ended with the exit polls predicting a 2nd term for prime minister narendra modi long queues formed outside polling
8:13 am
stations in the final round of voting throughout the election modi's hindu nationalist b j p and its rivals have accused each other a bottle of fraud and intimidation election a seen as a referendum on modi and his policies results are expected on thursday. well the used to me show while joins us now from the city of barra nasi the constituency of prime minister narendra modi so what are the exit polls saying about the likely outcome of this election. a 4th to be unanimous oh ard that prime minister in the genes or more the have been given the national mandate that he will be avoided a 2nd term that's not all the exit polls are saying now just on a few one numbers by you the 2 if the number of seats in the lower host despite 43
8:14 am
anybody who crosses the hof a mom can form government the lot the single largest body has preference to form the government and the b.g.p. and its allies tighten the up predicted to not just me i don't see 100 seats that's the vicinity of the number each of the exit polls are predicting so comfortably in the lead the opposition is only expected to have one on $120.00. you won 30 seats and they all fall behind but i must know that everybody also says these exit polls must be taken with a grain of salt back in the 2004 general elections 3 terms ago it was widely expected that the b.g.p. alliance will come to power back they ended up losing to the congress led alliance the u.p.a. so everybody the recommendation who've been put out over here in india is that why the reason to move the should be expected to hold them for another 5 euros that's weird to me trying to put. the this is the biggest election the world has ever seen
8:15 am
with 900000000 eligible voters has it all going smoothly. well definitely this election has been a long one an arduous one a challenging 11 that was held in scorching heat as you can see all around me and the ton of those around 64 percent not see the election was successful however we have to note that in the state the west bank was 4 adek episodes of violence all through the election the election was had over 7 phases there was only one to divide it up and push me because of security concerns or that things were mostly peaceful bought some reboarding headed in the stadium to put up and the electronic voting machines that are not become a picture i mean becoming a nominee and in elections across the face some issues so what i largely the election went off fairly soon would be of course a massive election some glitches were expected but the violence of course was

a problem for western. and we should thank you so much to them we should trust wall they're talking to us from the bar in the india. now the german constitution marks its 70th anniversary this week introduced after the horrors of world war 2 the basic law makes human rights freedom and equality fundamental values for germany after the allies had defeated the nazis there were many questions about how to rebuild europe western powers the best friends britain wanted to plant a solid democracy in the ruins of the fascist dictatorship this required a federal government structure and a strict division of powers the document was initially a temporary one just for west germany but 40 years later when west and east were reunited the constitution was adopted in the new united germany. but how relevant is the constitution in today's germany article one for example

states that human dignity is inviolable well as part of our series it's my right our next story looks at what dignity means to a german man who was homeless for 10 years. also because after going to the toilet or taking a shower the normal things for everyone how can you do this when you're homeless it's not so simple. dominate lived on the streets for 10 years always on the move looking for something to eat somewhere to sleep he says it was a life without dignity. dominic was 16 when his mother threw him out the streets of st paoli became his
8:18 am
home in the red light district of combat. that's the thing. when we beat each other up for sleep. baggett's a fight for survival and then there's this distinct violence and contempt where people come in they don't treat you with dignity but like dirt they piss on your sleeping bag or batting you with something they might not be here tomorrow maybe someone will set me on fire or beat me to death so you end up living just for the here and now and try to stay alive. yet dominic's got his high school diploma and volunteered in a clothing to pay for refugees people even worse off than him he sees this kind of thing all the time please wake up a sleeping homeless man and tell him to move on. this is also a question of dignity who among those who sit down somewhere at lunchtime expects
8:19 am
to be approached by 3 police officers and you see how they put on gloves because they discussed it. that's no way for people to treat each other. dominic is working to offer homeless people some dignity he's collecting donations to pay for a shower bath and past room on wheels with a dressing room full of clean clothes he learned what hygiene can means were passed and when he was living on the streets. body and soul go hand in hand at some point if you're physically do you turn inwards and feel in the end that you yourself are there. has a lot to do with dignity and feelings of self-worth these are things that are lost on the streets this bus can help taking showers to people who need them. dominic got his life in order he's 30 now and for the 1st time his existence is fairly secure he has work he has goals.
8:20 am
and he has friends most importantly he says. i have an apartment and i appreciate what that means local for me it's a luxury to be able to sleep in my books in shorts to watch myself whenever i feel like you know i need to shower. people have a dignity and that is inviolable and that should apply to everyone washing is a large part of that. was mentioned after german reunification 30 years ago it was decided that west germany's basic law would apply to the entire country today's been a president. was a central figure in negotiations with the former communist east he spoke with our chief political editor me. mr president what's so special about germany is basically all just based on their name calling it's the 1st of all what's special
8:21 am
about the basic lore is the conditions under which it was created one must be clear that germany had unconditionally surrendered after the catastrophe of hitler with total destruction of the 2nd world war it was a ruined country and so we still think well to even have a sovereign state and to create a framework that then became something no one could have even imagined back then that's the great thing about this basic law when i look at the basic law today because i mean the most important thing is already contained in article one human dignity is inviolable all the other things derive to an extent from this principle . and through queered up that really kind of course we also have many other questions article 38 which is the basis for the parliamentary mandate in which members are only bound by their conscience but they are also representatives of the whole people but they are discounting 4 percent. you know it's this and so it's
8:22 am
a constitution that was created in post-war germany which at 1st was a kind of temporary solution and then became kind of a top export many young democracies adopted parts of it how do you explain this this is of so dusty digs is often the case that things that at 1st are not at all claim to be intended for eternity are often much more successful in the basic law is really a stroke of luck in german history get what you really sad it has become a talker export base and lore is the precise embodiment of what a constitution must. provide stability and at the same time it's allows for change it's not rigid it's cool because we've experienced unbelievable changes in the last 70 years the basic law has become the constitution of the united germany it's a real constitution no longer a temporary solution was and for all these changes the basic law was both a basis of stability and at the same time
8:23 am
a flexible framework in which the changes were possible this will also be important in the future we're facing dramatic changes especially due to technological developments in the age of digital is ation we must concern ourselves more and more with how we can assert values and it's not just the basic laws values but also of western democracy is the american declaration of human rights and the french revolution history like a sea being expressed in these values of the west how can we also assert these values that were gained and acquired in the cheve in the real world in the digital world of the internet that's the big question all western democracies must deal with for which no one yet has a panacea but we're working on it so how bad. is this going because it has basically also guided you personally through historic upheavals have you played a significant role in negotiating the reunification treaty of the 2 germany's.
8:24 am
looking to the future how future proof is this german constitution it is that i took off as long as it's a basic law is also a good basis for the future because it's not just a stable foundation but also leaves room for changes what we have is just the right balance the basic law of the constitution has been continuously further developed through the constitutional reality by what happened in the 70 years see by the jurisprudence of the federal constitutional court because that's the way it is with every constitution even the american constitution is no longer the same as it was when it was created 200 years ago and that's the good thing if a constitution is good for anything it creates stability amidst little change and. in tennis rafael nadal has defended his a tally an open title defeating as big rival novak djokovic in 3 sets the spaniard
