over words about unity keeping the country together and then he dropped a bombshell he not only said he would be dissolving parliament with immediate effect to the very faces of the members of parliament who face a very tough election for them given that selenski is riding high in the polls he also said they now have 2 months to pass a law stripping themselves of immunity from prosecution and also to pass a new law that would make getting back into politics of many the much harder and you long proportional representation and he fired the head of ukraine security service who was standing in the podium a couple of meters away from him so lots of very straight expressions of incredulity on the faces of ukraine's elites who really had been expecting something a little more conventional and he says given that today monday is a working day they should get straight to work now there are loopholes here he might not get the elections he's hoping for but he really has started off with all guns blazing so. starting off with

a bang there as ukraine's new president will as the new leader of the country selenski will face many challenges let's take a closer look now at the man who has just taken over the reins of power. was. it was a result that even zelinsky himself seemingly couldn't quite believe 73 percent almost 3 quarters of ukrainian voters had put their trust in him as the political had a man who would only announce intention to run just a few months before a face familiar to almost all ukrainians from television but someone who had never been involved in politics let alone run for office. for incumbent petro poroshenko it was a stinging defeat losing to zelinsky in all but one ukraine's regions his pitch to the nation as commander in chief as the man who had kept ukraine in its army together in the face of russian aggression had fallen on deaf ears simply in the weeks since his sensational victory selenski is kept out of the limelight making

only a handful of appearances most of them on social media as ukraine's parliament squabbled over the timing of the inauguration but what is it the ukrainians are really expecting any new president to do. i don't really know what to expect but i'm hoping for the best i've had enough of all the old faces in politics you know. the heavy face corruption in our country is that's the main thing. release the puts alinsky let's see what to expect from him as president. he speaks ill inauguration as president in this series 70 people zelinsky charms his audience by throwing stuff the protocol who bold and refusing to speak will behave like a politician. whether the real presence alinsky will manage to pull off the same feat only time will tell but one thing is already clear he's captured the country's imagination and he won't be the last showbusiness star weighing in on ukraine's

politics as the country's most famous rock musician says he too plans to launch a new party. so long as the landscape is a familiar face but he has no political experience nic what qualities do you craniums see in him that they think will make him a good leader well sorry to put it bluntly i think the main quality for most voters was the fact that he wasn't part of the old elite he wasn't petro poroshenko i think this was many a vote against forcing good incumbent and the old but still class were also will of the same generation and had been on people's t.v. screens for decades. really selling a promise of hope of change bringing a new approach to politics rather than going into too much detail of the nitty gritty of politics to seemingly what really interest in that they were definitely concerned about low standards of living the corruption that has led to ukraine failing to make good on its huge potential and keeping people in such poverty so
11:06 am
those are the main themes but i think it's more about a mood and a feeling and a desire for change rather than anything too concrete so you mention a number of domestic issues and the new president has come in with guns blazing as you said already dissolving parliament but what about russia any idea how ukraine's new president intends to approach those testy relations with russia. well in his speech just a couple of minutes ago he addressed what he's the ukrainian citizens in crimea and in and said that his main priority would be bringing an end to hostilities in the east of ukraine that don't bust conflict where ukraine faces russian backed separatists there had been speculation mainly from his political opponents that he would be a soft touch that he would be somewhat easy to manipulate for him and putin is a more experienced political operator i think it's going to be difficult for him to make any concessions to russia even if you wanted to because ukraine society off of
11:07 am
these 5 years of conflict with russia over crimea has really shifted in the way ordinary people is see russia there was one candidate in the elections who visited moscow before the election he came in 4th place i think in modern ukraine being seen as too chummy with the kremlin is not something that pays off at the ballot box or with public opinion so i think that's going to be very limited the scope there for any closeness to russia more broadly he is concerned though to reach out to russian speaking ukrainians to people who felt they've been maybe neglected at a time where ukrainian language and kind of building if you cranes nation cultural nation building has really been a focus and he actually made a point of speaking in russian for parts of his speech something that would be unthinkable something is going to be a change of stylistics mainly directed towards russian speakers within ukraine but russian the crimean i think is still to boot for russia for ukraine given that we are in a state of conflict over. nic thank you very much nic conley there in kenya.

huawei now plans to use backup chips it's been developing for years and insists the impacts will be limited. austria is to hold step elections in early said. kember following a corruption scandal involving one of the parties in the governing coalition secret footage shot in the beats and 2017 shows vice chancellor heinz. of the far right freedom party apparently offering government contracts to a person posing as a russian investor in exchange for political favors. resigned after the video was released by 2 german publication. let's bring in our correspondent barbara vai's all she's standing by in vienna barbara austria's freedom party has just held a press conference so what do they have to say. they're still struggling for political survival and they somehow more or less say we're innocent we didn't
11:12 am
really do anything too bad because hans who is the man who was caught in this evil side gate scandal and he stepped down and his friend the russian expert of the freedom party stepped down to so now it's over we could just as well continue so they are still trying to sort of talk this scandal down and particularly the new party leader norbert flow for who is the 2 years ago who was a presidential candidate and almost got elected into the highest office in austria and he talked as if he had been pulled through fabric softener not all foreigners and migrants coming to australia bad we have a pretty good relationship with the press we thank the press for their work you know that is directly the opposite of what was said in this now infamous video so they're still trying to stand sort of stay in office however there is an ultimatum up of the conservative party saying if the interior minister doesn't step down
11:13 am
we're going to throw them out of the coalition because how can the interior minister who is from the freedom party who is one of the leading members of the freedom party investigate himself and his own party we won't stand for that so now attention is up and we're still waiting for the chancellor for the prime minister courts to come out here and say ok it's really finally over things are dragging on emissions of us in quotes barbara new elections have been called hell difficult will it be for sebastian cortes the country's leader to regain his post. it depends on how he plays things now if he is smart and he is quite charismatic austrians to like him in spite of that he got very close to the freedom party and sort of condoned a lot of their politics which were extremely to the right and extremely populist so
11:14 am
he might still survive this if he plays a well if he starts just sitting himself carefully and tries to sort of polish his image whether he'll be able to do that and how he how he goes about it is yet to be seen so far he has seen to be a bit dithering because all this happened on friday and nothing really came out of his office on saturday neither on sunday except for that there will be elections but the president was really behind that so courts now has to become a bit more decisive and show how he plans to go into the future barbara thank you very much barbara vessel there in vienna. and just a reminder of the top story we're following for you here today on w. news comics full of your selinski has been sworn in as the new president of ukraine selenski won a landslide victory in last month's election despite having no political experience he said his 1st test was to tackle the conflict with moscow in the east of the
