groups are using social media to spread fake news and this information taliban jail as the head of elections to the european parliament which starts tomorrow. bussed to post under threat in kenya they are beautiful animals but they're facing tough times the potentially devastating implications not just for their survival but also putting environment at large. it's good to have you with us at least 6 people have been killed in riots in indonesia after demonstrators took to the streets to protest against the results of last month's presidential election violence broke out after authorities confirmed president djoko we don't go as the winner supporters of the main opposition candidate allege the election was rigged. thank you spills on to the

streets of jakarta a calm morning the violence showed no signs of abating protesters fought running battles with police throwing stones and setting fires as they continue to defy police orders to leave the downtown area. the demonstrations started peacefully on tuesday evening but they quickly turned violent election results showed president djoko we don't have won a 2nd term with 55 percent of the vote supporters of windows longtime rival the former general also beyond to try to force their way into the offices of the election supervisor agency they hurled burning projectiles at police who responded with tear gas rubber bullets and water cannon. opposition supporters later moved on to other areas of the city setting fire to vehicles and a police dormitory police blamed the violence on what they called provocateurs and said dozens of suspects had been arrested. the majority of protesters came

from outside jakarta they came from west java banton and central java. we also found evidence including an ambulance that was filled with stones and tools for attack. city life is disrupted many residents are trying to leave the election commission headquarters is barricaded closing parts of downtown to traffic it's difficult for me to get to my office because i have to take routes through back alleys it's safe but because there's commotion everywhere it makes us a bit doubtful. defeated candidate so beyond who has refused to accept the election result and vowed to mobilize people power the government has deployed some 50000 police and troops across jakarta as it braces for more unrest. for more on this let's bring in a risk you know from r.t.w. indonesia desk so risky last night there were mobs clashing with security forces how did that develop. so right now the indonesian police say that they had arrested

more than $100.00 so-called profiteers who were allegedly responsible for the filing focused it claimed this was not a spontaneous mass event but event by design and that the protest there were paid to be a mystery at the density of government this information kind of be of course verified on the other hand the government has blocked access to social media in certain areas to perfect use and books history guardian for this did you see there were wild rumors that police were using firearms to kill protesters this opposition was of course you not by the government so now i mean what the security for most general said he already has a list of names of people who allegedly were sponsored for to check out their rights from the looks of it we will see more arrests by the police in the coming days the only thing is we don't know whether high ranking police stations are also included in that list now mr reid order for example has done his presidential duty i call it by calling for a conciliation and national unity but judging by how hostile the government towards
12:05 pm
the over this issue it would agree to. this how widespread now is the support for the opposition. well right now a supporter turn into 2330 to call for a rest of the day q. same of muster minding the deadly protests and plotting to take down the democratic elected elected government in fact mr sudan does now running out of time due to collapse of his politician with 2 from 6 parties that officially accepted the defeat after that announcement of the official results we can expect to see more of movement to support the elected president from the wide political spectrum 2 of the parties that support mr. they need a national mandate party and a more democratic party led by former president susilo bambang yudhoyono or you do know. refraining from pretty spacy participating in mass protest. so
12:06 pm
you do no reach his party has into pollution of you know fully support. the election. and there are questions of course as to how legitimate the protests against we don't know are because we did see that official alleging that a lot of these protesters are coming from outside the city. from the looks of it the majority of the people are still behind the president and the filing protest has produced a rather more negative image for mr sowerby until the government of course tried to legitimize the demonstration by accusing them of an act of treason they claimed this was a spontaneous mussy thing but then even by the signs that the protesters were paid to demonstrate against the government some of the protester who were arrested still kept kept envelopes containing money of course this information cannot be verified risking a graph from our d.w. in the new desk in bonn thank you so much. supporters of abortion rights in the

u.s. have held nationwide rallies to oppose new laws restricting access to the procedure the state of alabama recently passed a law that essentially bans abortion and now other states are also considering and even passing tighter restrictions of their own religious conservatives hope the bands will provoke legal challenges that will wind up in the supreme court and overturn roe versus wade a 973 decision that established a woman's right to terminate her pregnancy. the. songs of protest in new york. that i was i was that was that i. was the marches on the streets in montgomery alabama where the state legislature knocked it the most restrictive abortion law in the country just last week. on the protest in front of the supreme court in washington on the national day of action to stop the bans

thousands rallied all over the country against recent rollbacks of abortion rights democratic lawmakers lined up to attack the republican party whose until bush in campaign is gathering steam that either of us. c had the back country there to get record ever heard. that. from this very texas. republican mark played truth can afford on route one man's fundamental right of the activists also rounded on the president trump has boosted the anti-abortion cause by appointing conservative judges to the supreme court's hands to federal courts so our message to you president truck.

was was was not because we had enough of you are. now part bodies you are making decisions partisan about. the us is facing long and polarizing call room battles over the right to abortion. and it's another divisive issue as the country moves towards next year's presidential election. well it's the end of an era at german luxury carmaker dima where its longtime c.e.o. teetered such as stepping down today to make room for his successor all are colonialists more than a decade such as shape the face of dimer while becoming one of the most recognizable faces of german business and now it's time to hand over the reins. ditto such as took the helm a time guy in 2006 his mission to clean up the mess left behind by his predecessor

york and schrempp he had called the merger with chrysler a match made in heaven but it turned pretty hellish for the stuttgart based carmaker losses during the chrysler years mounted into the billions such it was viewed as the right man at the right time for a fresh start after all he'd been through many a crisis with timer and his many years with the company including in the mid ninety's a spectacularly field trial known as the moose test set you got to work up to my eyes to important components that made significant improvements to the a class. after the chrysler acquisition such as spent 5 years polishing the battered american subsidiaries image he even managed to lead the brand into the black for a short period in the u.s. again notoriety as dr z. and even made appearances in commercials is 5 languages the spanish there is only one example that smalling for better performance at handling cool. when he took

over diamond such a focused on producing high end cars and trucks and 2016 mercedes once again beat out and b.m.w. for the title of largest premium manufacturer on the planet. but then the emissions scandal hit and search it came under pressure in may of 2018 he was caught. in the end it ordered the recall of almost 240000 die in their vehicles because they were allegedly equipped with illegal cheating software to defeat emissions testing done resume it was tarnished again and critics also accused her of investing too little and emo belly and too late yet another key issue his successor now has to tackle a correspondence and elder malone is waiting for the doors open at timeless and annual meeting citadel how did the farewell how did such as farewell go at this annual shareholders meeting are people sad to see him go or are they looking
12:12 pm
forward to the next era. well it's actually just wrapping up and i've had the opportunity to talk to quite a few shareholders now their responses such a has been pretty positive many are sad to see him go they say that they regret it and that they don't know enough about his successor to say whether the change is good now during the shareholders' meeting was also announced of that they would be paying out or they would be voting on. the highest of the 2nd highest dividend and diverse history so that certainly had some positive reception as well in the run up to the event however i did speak to some shareholders who felt that towards the end of his tenure dimer had become. such a had become slow to react to the burgeoning changes in the auto industry like a shift to a lighter mobility and autonomous driving and as such a fresh win that would be brought about by his successor would be welcome indeed now speaking of such a successor is he expected to continue in his footsteps or is this going to be
12:13 pm
a shift in strategy. well all of this has been groomed for this position for quite a while now it's been known for a year that he was going to take over the reins from sacha as such he's widely expected to implement the strategies continue the strategies that were decided in such as time but some of the novelty that he's expected to bring has more to do with this person he's not a german engineer for one he's a swedish manager and he's considered as part of an effort to make a dime or appear more international more outward looking but he's also taking over dialer at a difficult time of it weakening sales amid ongoing trade conflict between the us and china and the us and europe as such he does have a lot of work to do the challenges will be very great for him to know them alone at the dime or annual meeting thank you so much. and we'll take a look at some of the other stories making news around the world there have been heavy clashes near the libyan capital tripoli between pro-government forces and

fighters loyal to warlord. massive artillery fire to the city center this is the worst fighting since ramadan began in early may. the u.s. has said its suspect syrian government has used chemical weapons again this time in an attack over the weekend in the northwest of the country the army is targeting the few remaining rebel held positions there although there were no further claims of a chemical attack washington threatened reprisals if allegation is verified. vote counting is underway in malawi after the country's closely fought election president peter moore tanika is battling to hold off 2 rivals in a race that focused on corruption allegations and economic development. north korea has labeled u.s. presidential hopeful joe biden a quote tool of low i.q. and a quote imbecile bereft of elementary quality as a human being this after biden called north korean leader kim jong un
12:15 pm
a tyrant. has also said biden's candidacy was enough to make a cat laugh. or profit britain's prime minister theresa may is under renewed pressure with her latest bid to seal a brags that withdrawal deal all but doomed both opposition as well as many within her own party have already rejected it despite may offering what she said were concessions to win support those concessions included allowing lawmakers to vote on whether to hold a 2nd referendum if they approve her deal. all that means make could face a rather torrid session in the british parliament today will still make her case to lawmakers let's bring in. get mosques in london bigots reeses 4th attempt to pass a brags that plan is looking dead in the water already something has to give eventually what is it going to be. well we had to resume a giving a speech already yesterday in westminster so m.p.'s and politicians had
12:16 pm
a chance to react and i have to say that the reaction so far has been really dire remain as say that the offer of a 2nd referendum is in fact conditional on them policy in their withdrawal agreement so they say they are not going to go and rally behind her and her own party old so a very very negative reaction that goes so far that we have seen the conservative website conservative home which is not an official conservative party website but it's very influential in the whole party they have said well don't vote for its reason may in the european elections and saying so her own party not dreamily rallying behind her at all so it looks that the pressure to reason may have to go and soon is minding by the day and all of this is happening on the eve of the european elections which britain is unwillingly still a part of how is all of this likely to affect the british vote.
12:17 pm
very much so this vote is really about bret's it and the brics it party which is niger for all of his new party effectively a one man band he has had rallies all over the country and i feel you know i have seen people flocking to his readies and he's being celebrated like a star he like like a pop star with hundreds of people and thousands all over the country celebrating him and his party is really siding almost reaching up to 40 percent of the late 30 percent in some of pinion polls some latest polls the big parties the conservative party and les paul are going to be really punished and those elections tomorrow and that in town will also then influence who's going to be the next prime minister it will be down to conservative m.p.'s 1st of all but then ultimately to the party base to elect a new prime minister and we know that the party base is really very conservative
12:18 pm
they want brett said they want out and they will think that only a prime minister that's tough from their point of view then to resign may that's threatening with the you with walking out with no deal at all they think that that passed and will have a bigger chance so we'll see most likely a leadership contest over the next weeks over the summer and then at the moment it really looks like somebody from the right of the party somebody who might be prepared to walk out of these negotiations with no deal might be the next prime minister and b. i get lost for us in london thank you so much. some 400000000 voters across europe will decide what the next 5 years of the european parliament will look like before polls open a new study reports that far right and anti e.u. groups are using social media to spread fake news and disinform ation on a vast scale the online activist group vos compiled the study looking at social
12:19 pm
media platforms in 6 european countries identified over $500.00 facebook pages and groups that were spreading fake news hate speech and this information a total of nearly 32000000 people were following these accounts and had interacted with them millions of times the researchers reported the relevant pages to facebook management and in response the social media giant removed just 77 of them among those were pages from this user who had multiple accounts with variations on the name lala she used them to support the german far right party day with anti islamic content and attacks on radical feminism flagged up to almost 250 fake accounts in germany which was the most in all of the countries it's studied let's now bring in our brussels correspondent teri schultz who has been following fake news and online hate speech in europe terry fake news is already being widely monitored and reported on so what did this study tell us that we didn't already know. i think
12:20 pm
that the numbers as you've just gone through were actually very surprising the vast reach of these networks and they remained up and not taken down by the platforms by facebook which has has committed to remove this material as fast as it could find it so when you think that that these pages have been viewed half a 1000000000 times over just 3 months that 6000000 times a day you realize the amplification that this fake material can have been and how dangerous that is and in fact you know we've been watching for some huge disruption in the electoral process maybe some huge dump of information but what it was a saying is that these campaigns have been going quietly under the radar under the noses of users and that's even more dangerous here's kristoff shot from a vase who explains what we're seeing is systematic this information it's not one thing is popping up here another one there it is building that works of millions of followers of millions of people and then reaching out further and further and further and snowie but surely kind of deceiving people into believing the same lies
12:21 pm
and that's the danger of the business amazing not one week one big fake news it's done it is over a very long term playing the long game and slowly but surely amassing more and more people who then build like their own bubble of reality so we're researchers able to actually determine the impact that fake news is having in these 6 countries they could determine the regions very hard to determine the impact at this point but what we do know is that since this material that was found by a vase almost all of these pages were spewing anti migrant messages anti-semitic messages sometimes even illegal hate speech that's obviously not going to have a good impact on society and on democracy just when these countries are gearing up to vote so yes it was it's considered quite a dangerous phenomenon to uncover just before elections of course the big question is we have these european parliament elections coming up what does this mean. it
12:22 pm
will be hard to say until after we see turnout and after we see who wins and certainly the rise of far right parties and populism can't be attributed just to fake news even though those are the people who were benefiting from this campaign these campaigns that have been uncovered now but you know what these groups have to do isn't even convince people of of anything they mostly want to sow mistrust so distrust in government in communities in the media and if they make people apathetic and simply despair and not turn out to vote at all those are going to be wins for anti e.u. factions so if you're a conscientious voter and social media user who doesn't want to fall into the fake news trap what can you do to make sure you don't do that i think everybody has to realize that these pages are now we're right under our noses they're probably on my facebook page and yours and when we see that they are not being taken down immediately it means we all have to be our own fact checkers and there are
12:23 pm
consortiums of media organizations out there fact checking organizations that have popped up you can follow them on twitter you can follow them on facebook and people really need to think before they share information on social media take a look at the background of those articles that information those advertisements and see who's paying for them just think before you share and trust your gut if something doesn't look right teri schultz for us in brussels on the eve of the european parliament elections thank you so much. to kenya now where hippopotamuses are facing a new threat not only are hunters targeting them they also have to compete with other animals for food and as a result their numbers are dwindling now a new study has revealed that any reduction in their numbers could spell disaster for the vital health of rivers in that region 100 grazes on the shores of kenya's lake 9 fashion one of the 1500 hippos that make this lake. but the
12:24 pm
grass is increasingly in short supply. locals often bring back cattle down to the grasslands fringing the lake to feed the competition for food between wildlife and domestic animals is driven to the extreme by drought and climate change. it means that people are bringing their life into protected areas national parks and reserves and they're competing with the animals like hippos and these poor animals don't have any other source of food they literally will die of starvation if they hippos die the rivers and lakes could die with them hippos chum through huge amounts of grass every night and this grass contains a precious element called silica floating in the water during the day that digestion kicks in they then excrete vast quantities of dung into the water the silica in the hippo dung is absolutely vital for the health of africa's waterways a new study has found it helps curb algae blooms that killed marine life. so
12:25 pm
to have healthy waterways we need healthy hippos but hippos don't gonna much sympathy with the locals just last year several people have died from hippo attacks have been in many many cases of people killed by hippos and this means people don't like to tolerate people they were often killed it's been in the press in kenya quite a lot of sin many many instances of local people calling the service to come and kill hippos because they feel like their lives are endangered. with that cattle and the hippos all competing for dwindling grasslands the biggest loser of this fight might be our environment. and a reminder of the top stories we're following for you the violence has erupted in indonesia as protesters were used to accept the outcome of the presidential election several people are feared dead after supporters of the losing candidate.
