anything's possible as long as our coffee and his friends contribute to. the top refugee camp. his life story may have grown to. 27 years ago but there's no holding back his dreams. thank you for the double sort of a 27 on the w. . this is d w news asia coming up on the program a resoundingly victory for india's prime minister in arendelle bodie he and his hindu nationalist party win outright majority in general elections but will the movie deliver the inclusive india he's promised. that's what many of india's young people want to know the w.'s paresh candidate is in delhi asking if things will get better or worse for them under 5 more years of modi.
3:31 pm
i'm melissa chan welcome to news asia it's good to have you with us 5 more years india's prime minister narendra modi will take the helm again after scoring a commanding victory in nationwide elections the official count gives modi and his hindu nationalist party a majority in the lok sabha and the power to form a government without a coalition it's a humiliating defeat for opposition parties but modi found a clear path to victory as india's hindu nationalist hero. wrote the law and returns narendra modi's celebrated his hour of triumph in new delhi before delirious supporters called. naming victory he urged them to put the

bitter and divisive campaign behind them. i mean we have to look ahead we have to take everyone together even people who oppose us will take them with us we have to work for the benefit of this country. we're going to. indian papers were bursting with super lives over murders landslide win some calling it i'm now moment others saying he's hindu nationalist wave had become a tsunami. it was a crushing blow to india's most powerful political dynasty role gandy head of the opposition congress party lost the seat of i'm 80 which he's famous family had held for 4 decades. i want to see that. is not the be put me to go into the. what is that is there a new prime minister has been elected and good is that it is him all the best and.
3:33 pm
only he would look after the interests of his not be picky but. modi has promised a more inclusive india over the next 5 years but you might also see a mandate to push his hindu 1st policies even harder. found the car spoke with hello asked ned an associate professor at the center for developing societies she asked him what modes reelection means for india's minority muslims do make up the largest religious minority in india and in recent years we have heard reports rights groups have documented a rise in violence and lynching started against muslims and also against low cost into groups do you think this is a sense of feel a sense of certainty because if you asked me would leave one issue off entire muslim population in the country is that this fear now this fear is created
3:34 pm
systematic and not. so when you lynch a person you create a fear psyche in the community communities of the strings so they have somehow succeeded now if mr modi is talking about inclusiveness now i think he has to. do a bit more work on his governance type performance because certainly if you evaluate his performance as enable administrator he was virtually fairly good out in 2002 when he was the chief minister of dr very street vendor took place and as the prime minister of this country he remained silent on virtually all of these episodes which took place with regard as a result and the 3rd important aspect was there media which is actually pro government media could you get a discourse where hindu muslim became. polarized got tickets and mr
3:35 pm
modi didn't actually do anything in order to ease this he said a few words but that too late and too late. it's not just the future of minorities in question but the future of young people as well all parties saw them as a major voting bloc in the run up to the election. prime minister narendra modi even called them creators of the destiny of our nation in the 21st century. to people who work with creators on a regular basis roughly 45000000 new young voters in the group 182258 little toward in this election whether they all voted or not is yet more importantly who they voted for is also unclear but there might be some people who have an idea of what the young people in india expect in the next 5 years from the government for more i'm joined right on by angelica you are
3:36 pm
a political activist and you worked a lot with young people and on truth value of the founder of youth or voice of the youth an online platform that looks at young people's issues if i can just begin with you 1st on true i remember we had spoken before the election got underway in full swing and you had talked about how you conducted a survey about the issues that are important to young people and one of the issues was employment and if you look at the election result the way it's come out if everybody had to be bored with the employment is the issue perhaps you would have had a different result can you explain this different i know for sure so i think you know one of the things that we observed and saw that he clearly was that vial issues like employment health care crisis even matter a lot of young people are not translating into issues of people who want to walk don't expect the same government bill still there's all those issues it's not like the expectations are going to change we still want jobs they want to better education system but at the same time there is something about the b.g.p.
3:37 pm
on the more the in particular that does seem like you know charming to young people when they go out and war so it kind of ends up trumping all of these issues which do still matter to young people and the same time young people in india who also hold these very close to themselves so you know that ended up playing a very big role in this election also. so i think those 2 kind of go hand in hand when we talk about. the young people and their little in terms of identities one of the our district is very you have seen young people hold on to on is that what has always been important to young people in the stump troll the history of india if we look at politics all movements of people have been very closely associated with the cost and volatile parties have been looking at exploiting that for a woodbine but in the last 5 years we've been there in the morning go and what has happened is people have started taking remission more closely than cost so when to be. in the early election as well as now they have started exploiting religion so
3:38 pm
now it's the issue will fall off of us and them against minorities the move limbs the christians that are in india the hindus who are a majority so now the struggle between the young people is. like already mentioned they have all the i did this is very very close to the heart and their identity primary identity right now is their religion in terms of this does not mean that the opposition for example could not see this trend that this is how young people think of potential talk about employment is potentially just a cover for their i did to be is that some of the opposition. opposition was focused primarily on the agenda. and employment on the money that happened in india on the new tax museum that's coming but these were not important to the young people of europe of its identity politics of identity politics but the opposition was not harping on it we were looking at solving the issues that currently the countries 3 things like a 45 year highest unemployment rate in the country every culture in which gives
3:39 pm
employment to more than half of the population 18 year. this is a fact those were the opposition was looking and you know this will be a gender that they put all the people that we will solve this issue thinking that there's a lot of people who want that but unfortunately that's not what the people want to ensure what does this say about the young. in this country i mean just a corner in a boat in a movie called young people in this country the creators of the destiny or foreign mission what kind of a destiny can we expect these young people to create if they're looking at a strong man in prison i'm not looking of the issues of the day as i'm going to come in from you know i mean it's obviously very difficult to answer this but at the same time the trend that we're seeing is that what young people want is somebody who comes across as really strong leader and when i say strong i mean somebody who are police projects an image of india outside of the world which is then you know it's a border country which is a to move forward in a direction that it needs to an additional leads a country where you know. issues like. you know. seizures in
3:40 pm
india and pakistan will be taken very very easy to see issues like identity will be taken to a basically so i think what young people are really looking at when comes in in the movie is this image of. you know of a strong leader i do same time you know it's very important goals in north that what people have essentially voted for is that you know it's an economy that favors culprit's is a country that you know wants to go to any measure possible to protect its culture . you know isn't is a country that minogue cares so much about person liberty and freedom which is scary of course and i think maybe there is a chance that that those inaudible think issues right now but if these issues are not to get his daughter in the mood the government still does not end up working on issues like you know employment plus the liberty freedom my feeling is that they will creep up on the government at some point you know in the future in the you know elections off of this well if i'm
3:41 pm
a young person in india can i reasonably expect this government to have the competence to solve the issues in the long term at least in the 5 year term i don't because the government is not focused on solving this issues they have not been talking about it all the detail has been buried or distorted and so you have the full good on you know building on the standing man. nationalism and though there isn't hiding behind a trickle said rather than trying to solve this issue and when the opposition brings up this issues and try to get the government to welcome them they don't come in to lose a ring on some you wish you like one nationalism fundamentally i reconsidered as i was yeah i just as an actor that you know the thing is that. in india one idea that you cannot question is your how indeed you are right because that's something we've all just because to us as the moment you start building your politics around it the moment you start seeing that i am more indian than you what
3:42 pm
i am the most indian that's you know possibly out there of course it gets in units out getting the only politicised you cannot expect me to produce all these within 5 years at all you don't have any you would have as a nation in the bottom and i do so how do you take young people's voice is there a quick final word from both of you i'm up one of those future for young people in india for sure yes all right future yes but also that will lead to one particular awareness and hopefully a brighter future maybe some brighter future coming out of greece polarize india thank you both for coming on to this talk for us that's nifty it from but also both you heard the voices of 2 young people themselves who work with a number of young people interesting times ahead 5 more years of the names or more the government we don't leverage and watch and see how young people in this country perform if i can put it that barry over the next 5 years. that's it for today you can find more stories on our website e.w. dot com for slash asia and be sure to check us out on facebook as well we'll leave
