in delhi asking if things will get better or worse for them under 5 more years of modi. i'm melissa chan welcome to news asia it's good to have you with us 5 more years india's prime minister narendra modi will take the helm again after scoring a commanding victory in nationwide elections the official count gives modi and his hindu nationalist party a majority in the lok sabha and the power to form a government without a coalition it's a humiliating defeat for opposition parties but modi found a clear path to victory as india's hindu nationalist hero. the lion returns narendra modi celebrated he's hour of triumph in new delhi before
6:32 pm
delirious supporters while claiming victory he urged them to put the bitter and divisive campaign behind them. my we have to look ahead we have to take everyone together even people who oppose us will take them with us we have to work for the benefit of this country. being. indian papers were bursting with support of his over motives landslide win some calling it a now moment others saying he's here to nationalise wave had become a tsunami. it was a crushing blow to india's most powerful political dynasty role gandy head of the opposition congress party lost the seat of i'm 80 which he's famous family had held for 4 decades. i want to say that. is not the big for me to go into. it but is that the there is a new prime minister has been elected it is that did him all the best and.

only he would look after the interests of his. modi has promised a more inclusive india over the next 5 years but he might also see a mandate to push his hindu 1st policies even harder. found the car spoke with hello asked ned an associate professor at the center for developing societies she asked him what modes reelection means for india's minorities muslims do make up the largest religious minority in india and in recent years we have heard reports rights groups have documented a rise in violence and lynching started against muslims and also against low cost into groups do you think this is a sense of feel a sense of certainty because if you asked me would leave one issue off in population in the country and that is fear now this fear is created systematic and
6:34 pm
not. so when you lynch a person you create a fear psyche community or communities of the strings so they have somehow succeeded now if mr modi is talking about inclusiveness now i think he has to. do a bit more work on his government's performance because certainly if you evaluate his performance as nabl administrator he was virtually fairly good up in 2002 when he was the chief minister of dr very street vendor took place and as the prime minister of this country he remained silent on virtually all of these episodes which took place with regard as a result and the 3rd important aspect was there media which is actually pro government so media could you get a discourse where hindu muslim became. polarized got tickets and mr

morsi didn't actually do anything to in order to ease the tension he said a few words but definite too late and too little. it's not just the future of minorities in question but the future of young people as well all parties saddam is a major voting bloc in the run up to the election. prime minister narendra modi even called them creators of the destiny of our nation in the 21st century. to people who work with creators on a regular basis roughly 45000000 new young voters in the 18 to 25 way eligible to vote in this election whether they all voted on not as yet more importantly who they voted for is also unclear but there might be some people who have an idea of what the young people in india expect in the next 5 years from this more the government for more i'm joined now. by angelica you are
6:36 pm
a political activist and you worked a lot with young people and on truth value of the founder of yukio or voice of the youth an online platform that looks at young people's issues if i can just begin with you 1st on trial i remember we had spoken before the election got underway in full swing and you had talked about how you as a conductor been a survey about the issues that are important to young people and one of the issues was employment and if you look at the election result the way it's come out if everybody had voted with the employment is the issue perhaps you would have had a different result can you explain this differently i know for sure so i think you know one of the things that we observed and saw that he clearly was that vial issues like employment health care crisis even matter a lot of young people do not translating into issues of people who want the war don't expect the same government bill still has all those issues it's not like the expectations are going to change we still want jobs they want to better education
6:37 pm
system but at the same time there is something about to be the more the in particular that does seem like you know charming to young people when they go out and war so it kind of ends up trumping all of these issues which do still matter to young people at the same time young people in india who also hold these very close to themselves so you know that ended up playing a very big role in this election also. so i think those 2 kind of go hand in hand when we talk about. young people and delicate in terms of identity is one of the i did just these very you have seen young people or don't do i mean is that what has always been important for young people in this country troll the history of india if we look at politics movements some people have been very closely associated with the cost and volatile parties have been looking at exploiting that for a woodbine but in the last 5 years we've been there in the morning go and what has happened is people have started picking relation and more closely than cost so when
6:38 pm
to be. in the early election as well as now they have started exploiting religion so now it's the issue will fall off of us and them against minorities the move limbs the christians that are going in near us as the hindus who are a majority so now the struggle between the young people is the. already mentioned they will be i did this is very very close to the heart and their identity primary identity right now is their religion in terms of this does not mean that the opposition for example could not see this trend that this is how young people think of potential talk about issues such as employment potential just. for that i did today is that some of the. opposition was focused primarily on the agenda. and employment on the money that happened in india on the new tax museum that's coming but these were not important to the young people if you will of its identity politics of identity politics but the opposition was not harping on it we were looking at solving the issues that currently the countries 3 things like
6:39 pm
a 45 year highest unemployment rate in the country every culture on which gives the employment to more than half of the population 18 years this fact those were the opposition was looking and you know this was the agenda that they put all the people that we will solve this issue thinking that there's a lot of people who want that but unfortunately that's not what the people want to ensure what does this say about the young. in this country i mean just a corner in a boat in a movie called young people in this country the creators of the destiny of our mission what kind of a destiny can we expect these young people to create if they're looking at a strong man in prison i'm not looking at the issues of the day as angelica mentions you know i mean it's obviously very difficult to answer this but at the same time the trends that we're seeing is that what young people want is somebody who comes across as the only strong leader and when i say strong i mean somebody who are police projects an image of india outside of the world which is that you know it's a border country which is a to move forward in a direction that it needs to an additional leads
6:40 pm
a country where you know. issues like. you know. seizures in india and pakistan we can vary but you see to see issues like identity will be taken maybe so i think what young people are really looking advent comes in in the movie is this image of you know of a strong leader i do same time you know it's very important roles in the work that what people have essentially voted for is that you know it's an economy that favors culprits is a country that you know wants to go to any measure possible to protect its culture . you know isn't is a country that minogue cares so much about personal liberty and freedom which is scary of course and i think maybe there is a chance that that those are not walking issues right now but if these issues are not to get his daughter to them or the government still does not and the booking on shows that you know i'm blind man plus the liberty freedom my feeling is that the even keep up on the government at some point you know in the future in the you know
6:41 pm
elections off of this well if i'm a young person in india or can i reasonably expect this government to have the competence to solve issues in the long term at least in the private term i don't because the government is not focused on solving this issues they have not been talking about it all the detail has been buried or distorted and you have the full good on you know building on the standing in. nationalist and they're just hiding behind the rhetoric of ed rather than trying to solve this issue and when the opposition brings up this issues and. moment to welcome them. bring on some new issue like the national with them on the measure everything to do just that you know the thing is that. in india one idea that you cannot question is your. right because that's something we will close to ourselves.
6:42 pm
the moment you start seeing that i am more indian than you are. you know possibly of course it gets. you cannot expect me to produce all these issues in 5 years you don't have any would represent nation in the parliament so how do you take young people's voices. from both of you one of those future for young people in india for sure yes. yes but also that will lead to more political awareness and hopefully a brighter future maybe some brighter future coming out of. thank you both for coming on to talk for us. from both you heard the voices of for young people themselves who work with a number of young people interesting times ahead 5 more years than any of them or the government will only watch and see how young people in this country. over the next 5 years. that's it for today you can find more stories on our website www dot com forward slash asia and be sure to check us out on facebook as well we'll leave
