so that. now we have the 1st party in the north and the south we got about 50 percent in so many cities and we also came 1st in many cities in the center we will go to work with even more energy passion and dedication the league is not only the 1st party in italy marine le pen is also the top european party in france and nigel farage is padi is the top party in britain so it's only france and england it is a sign of a europe which is changing. a federation. we see there salvini positioning himself clearly he we know he wants to be the head of this new nationalist walk he wants to form for europe is italy going to be the springboard now for the creation of that national's front. well brian much has held venia has definitely become a point of reference for other nationalists across the e.u.
2:01 pm
and this when there is a boost for nationalism at the european level it's also a boost to he's a plan of creating a pun european alliance of like minded parties but there are still some questions that are being raised about this alliance the 1st question is a 1st for how are these the parties that are on board to going to work together when they are a nationalist party is by definition they stand for their national interests and some of these interests are in conflict or they have also different affiliations for example towards a russia so how are they going to work together how are they going to show a united front. ok federica with this type of resoundingly victory what effect is this going to have on a national politics where you are heavily. well this election marks really a dramatic shift in power and here in italy because the the senior coalition partner in italy's government of the populists
2:02 pm
a 5 star movement that did not only been outperformed by their junior coalition partner the legal. that they've also not even come in 2nd place they've come in 3rd place with about 17 percent of the vote that is really a dramatic loss for them and also if we compare it's that's the last years a general election when they had 30 percent so they've almost halved their consensus so this is really a big loss for them and the speculation here in italy is whether this point and also having seen this result. will be under pressure to maybe pull the plug on this a coalition government which has been very difficult since the very beginning and maybe seek early elections maybe try to become prime minister himself however this is still up for speculation and he has rejected. this speculation so far and he also said that yesterday when he spoke here at the league's headquarters that he
2:03 pm
was not considering his coalition partner as and then to me and he was still going to want to work together with the 5 stars ok we'll see if he can work together with them right now with this type of success let's go to longer for 11 more question before we wrap this up alex nigel farage demanding a seat at the talks we have that situation now is he going to get that seat will he be sitting down at those talks. it's a very good question bryan and again it depends who you also get depends who becomes the next leader of the conservative party i mean there is talk that there is the possibility that if it was someone like boris johnson who becomes the next leader and therefore the next prime minister that could be a possibility as a way of clawing back those votes is that the conservatives have lost to the brics that party and trying to get niger fraud's who basically has brought around this
2:04 pm
whole breck's it debate trying to get him on board and back into the party but that would then mean that the conservative party is going right staying right and then ignore aying and leaving behind a small center poaches those who do not want a honda brock's it may be don't want grex it particularly a tool so it is difficult and it does very much depend on who will be that next prime minister but i certainly do think nigel fraud has got a big role now to play in moat ever way the the next prime minister goes the concert for the conservative party anyway i mean obviously labor wouldn't want him at their table but the conservatives maybe they have no choice alex many thanks many thanks as well to federica baggio in the law thanks to both of you for now well here in germany on the americans governing coalition is assessing the damage
2:05 pm
after her conservatives and their social democrat partners were dealt their worst score in european election history the biggest winners they were the german greens doubled their show and now they're now germany's 2nd strongest party in brussels the right wing populist c.f.d. also gaining ground especially among eastern german voters. i sometimes reaction speak louder than words the german greens ecstatic as they watch their vote sarge this triumph belt off the back of young voters under climate emergency a warning shots of the country's government was the signal used the signal today is that the german government has been voted down as a result of its hesitation on climate protection and its failure to unify europe. up give years 40 years we are fighting for european solidarity in strong climate protection emotional. at the c.d.u.
2:06 pm
party the watch dawn in dread not exactly drowning their sorrows but these results down 7 percent make for sobering reading as the party grapples with the country's shifting demographics. so i retired several there's certainly we have not been dynamic a nothing government and we fail to give convincing on says the voters across germany have expected of us intervention and. across town not their government coalition partners yes p d it was a picture of fool frontal despair. they saw almost half their vote disappear 27 percent to 15 the party's leadership pleaded for members not to lose the faith. and. it's mr i would
2:07 pm
like to ask all our s.p.d. members and supporters to take hot i'm still not confident me to the future even if today's results are painful they show us that we have a lot to do. for the far right if t. it was more a night of shot in freud than success. oh the biggest cheer for the s.p. d. and c. d. you losses. they had threatened an insurgency for 10 the end mustered 10 percent the disappointment hard to hide. the again not. to repair the e.u. to reduce the e.u. to a school work that is why we have been elected and that is what we are going to do in brussels. these may have been european elections but their results may well she cut domestic politics too. well how much are they going to shake up domestic
2:08 pm
politics talk about that we have simon young from the political desk here with us good morning simon here in germany the big parties have been dealt a real blow what kind of impact is this going to have generally will start there on on domestic policies yeah i think it's going to lead to a discussion again that's been happening over the last few months about the party leadership in particular and there's a big meeting of the of the leaders of the government parties to softer noon in angola medical's chance to really but these are appalling results for the 2 government parties conservatives and social democrats that would result in a national poll ever they lost 20 percent of support between them which is quite incredible basically bad for the s.p. day they vote for instance just to pick out one highlight they've they've also done very badly in braman a state where they've been in power for a 17 years and they've lost control and that just tells you know that
2:09 pm
they're there in a bad way a lot of people are saying it's partly down to the leader andrea knowledge she's been in power they are in place just over a year she was brought in to renew the party some people in the media and even in the s.p.d. itself as saying she hasn't got quite control of it same for the new cd you leader as well although in her case the questions now may lead her to push forward and possibly seek to. replace angle or medical as journalists than expect ok so we can see real shake ups in the us who governing parties right now could receive new elections or not reach that level well i think that's unlikely for the same reason that these tea parties have lost so much support the looking so well billy they've probably done to cling together at this time to try and stay in power and try and continue to regroup as they've been doing in the last few months ok we knew the greens would be successful but this is an astounding victory for them you know they've doubled their support what was behind that is it about the climate
2:10 pm
concerns mainly well i think it probably really is the greens are saying is a sensational result i think indeed pretty surprised from their reactions they've done so well they clearly have had momentum off the back of the climate change particularly the youth protest because the youth vote they've been secretly picked up huge lead for them in the under 30 support but even if you look at the edges under 60 they're still in the in the majority voting green in this european election which is which is a something neat actually numbers looking out for the youth voters 30 percent of the under thirty's voting for the greens i've if that points to the future points are very strong future for the greens of course of the right wing far right a.f.d. alternative for germany we were looking at them possibly doing 14 percent there are 11 right now. what happened to them well some are saying it's a bad result for them i would say they still increase their support by 50 percent
2:11 pm
as against the last year pay an election some said it should have been 100 percent it's not a bad result for them but they haven't quite got the breakthrough they were looking for possibly that's down to failures in communication some of the people was saying that they support jim lee leaving the european union others would not cool about that idea surprised voters didn't know exactly what they were voting for those have been the suggestion that. they've had some spillover from the scandals with the far right in austria they've been mixed up with support for full russia and so on in a video that was released the other week and the f.t. failed to distance themselves from that scandal so they've they haven't quite shaken off that image that they're a bit dodgy and some voters may have been turned off ok briefly if you could let's look at foreign policy german foreign policy as a result of this france has been a manual mccrone the president there or has been reconned. considerably barbara in the le pen's far right national rally house is going to affect relations between
2:12 pm
the machal and amount or will mccrone the 2 individuals driving the e.u. right now well i think that you'll see more continuing coolness as you've been seeing from a medical for mr macro's grand plans to reform the e.u. but both countries i think recognize that something needs to change there needs to be a way to galvanize you know the interest that people clearly have in the european level of decision making that's been shown by the high turnout in this election not just in germany but around europe so i think you'll continue to see these 2 cool countries working close together but exactly on what program of reforms will that does remain to be seen mr mccrone also hasn't done terribly well they were going to pick up on that right now in paris simon young thanks very much for that the far right as we have been discussing has been making strong gains in france pushing president among them across party into 2nd position so let's go now to paris where
2:13 pm
our correspondent ammonia o'shea's is standing by good morning to you real appends national rally beating microphones party but only right now courting the results by a small margin what does that tell us about the populist right now in france. well that tells us that not not ready maybe in the pants party mandates. to have a successful strategic. campaign which resulted in that's a lead. today by only a short margin you mentioned it is 23.3 percent as opposed to 22 point one percent for a minute in my cross. party so did at what was that started off the far right in france where they were they were united they proposed a problem that was much more town down tone down compared to what they had proposed 5 years ago and they manage something that no other french political party has that
2:14 pm
managed to do some quite some years now is that a show of unity and show of basically caring about concerns of people in terms of. immigration or nationalistic that they want to promote as the european union level however i would like to highlight the fact that the far right actually fared lower dysthymia iran than it had done in 2014 which means they will have the same amount of any piece of the palm and $24.00 pieces they want have a stronger representation what what it tells us is that the french people have chosen that party as a 1st political force ahead of the governing party of ammonia and i crawl right that that leads us to the question what does this all mean for
2:15 pm
a man who will continue governing as he has been up until now well. well the changes necessary for the president are as has been shown with a yellow vests krises that has been lasting for over 6 months now there is a strong discontent among the french population and that translated in yesterday's results as well here in france there was something quite particular that we didn't see to that extent you know the european countries is that people basically have a referendum on emanuel and micro him 7 on his politics why they're done caring about european issues and we so does this discontent was shown by people not choosing the governing party there's also another party that was the winner at yesterday's election as everywhere else in europe the greens they fared quite well with 13 point one percent and for france it's a huge result for
2:16 pm
a party which only fred out around 78 percent in the last elections as you mentioned there's a lot of discontent out there in france right now what will be the national rallies main goals right now being to change how things are done in brussels or will she be capitalizing on these gains domestically. well the difference was 2014 we discourse on the far right in 2014 is no more that that doesn't it's no more a question of dismantling the e.u. from the outside now they want to make it implode from size so the cover of soft hair discourse marring the band wants to. to change the european institutions and to make them accept a more nationalistic european union which is a paradox as she called for the formation of a powerful a union a powerful group within the european parliament with
2:17 pm
a firearm such as. such as it's party in the u.k. will she succeed that remains to be seen with a with all those parties agreed to get out that we only find out within the next couple of weeks and months one of the questions out there and certainly salvini as we've been hearing from a lot is pushing for that money will trust in paris thanks very much well one of the european union's most prominent jobs is also up for grabs and selection the role of the president of the european commission young claude younger he's been doing the job for the last 5 years but he is not up for reelection let's take a look at the people looking to replace him. i will do everything to defend this year i think we as greens take the battle i would propose. we have work to do migration is an opportunity we introduce minimum wage to every
2:18 pm
member state they are all running for the e.u. commission president margaret divest the liberals for the greens monthly to be about father conservatives funds to moments for the social democrats younes of a deal is conservative reverend this candidate and. is for the party they are the 6 leading candidates but hang on a minute who are they and does anyone know anything about them do you know any of them. and do you know him. any idea. honestly no i've ever seen her. i haven't seen a dutchman for months to my man speak some language as he once more social justice german month would be by is calling for secure europe for example by european f.b.i. denmark's moderate best star is standing for self-confident and women's rights left wing equal who from budget is
2:19 pm
a trade unionist and this parting for social rights the german scott kelly is promoting a european climate friendly future the czech republic's younes idealism fable the e.u. but once more sovereignty for individual nation states they are all committed to the european union but what are the biggest challenges what solutions do they need to offer for the future the fragmentation between member states a lot of distrust which we have which has increased over the past years between member states also between national capital and brussels liberal moderate of a stronger and social democratic plans to moments are the only candidates who have already had some experience as a minister is that an advantage for. obviously it isn't as if you have had experiences at national level because in many cases the national political parties are not really supportive of their european shipments and hunted out and they're not pushing them they're rather pushing their own national candidate so you don't see visually that they exist but one man has definitely been in the spotlight on
2:20 pm
the european states. who could be the joker in the pack he's not officially a candidate but he might just end up getting the job that's the right regarded negotiator he enjoys the respect and trust of many hats of state and government and in the end that could be way more important than a load off t.v. debate. ok let's talk about the presidency of the of the e.u. commission now it's about her man he's from the pro e.u. european movement here in berlin thanks for joining us this morning a very big day for for the european union certainly for the parliament you know as well as we saw in a report there people simply don't know who is up for the top job at the european commission isn't this one of the fundamental problems of the european union one that nigel frosh as certainly capitalized on yeah it's a problem to be solved thing what we can do for the next year is better of cause of
2:21 pm
national parties need to do that job and to put the top candidates on the lists after they get the word out there how do they make these individuals known to the broader voting public is there a way to do that there is always a way gotos known for climate change activism of course your white there many many ways of doing that and some people especially national parties don't do the top ok when we look at the voting results for the 1st time in memory we're seeing centrist parties no longer commanding the majority in the european parliament. can legislation move ahead in the way it has up until now since the creation of the european parliament 1st of all this is a national trend to fragmentation off because parties everywhere at this. happens so why should the european parliament different in this. and india the other thing is the nationalist parties then not that big and some people feel it so with a good result in that there would must be a bigger coalition than just sort of democrats and christian democrats or conservatives and we'll be including under the liberal party all the greens the
2:22 pm
liberal parties then well we will see if in alliances most of all with the greens from the conservatives that's the difficulty of the national level here in germany for example. if we look at the far right you just mentioned he said they didn't have the gains that were expected for a number of them nonetheless in the cooler 3 nations france italy and britain they swept the boards you missed one germany germany as a coronation but they didn't do well here at all not not as well as expected of course doesn't that mean that their views need to be taken into account it will be but in the other hand side in france you might call even he is very low support 22 percent is very low he's the leader of the country of cause and in italy there's a kind of shift from the the the the social democratic party is quite well no better than expected 7 is number one but not more than 40 percent it's 30
2:23 pm
percent so it's something up it's ok so you're saying the gains by the far right have been held within a certain margins that the mainstream parties in alliance with the liberals and the greens can work with exactly so we have a situation that the they the feel of them the date these parties leads to a model of his pro european wave and the turnout of the componentry didn't discuss about that the turnout was very very high so the alleged victims have been to see of the european parliament is much better ahead of the european council of the states of government and heads of states of government so that it's very clear that the parliamentarism is working of cause we have problems with visibility but this is much better than ever before ok so a boost. legitimacy like to look at the greens and there are success and not only here in germany a number of other countries as well does this mean we're going to see a push for a carbon tax for example in the european parliament there's a way in this direction anyway we had this and was talked about at the effect of
2:24 pm
personality we have this friday future movement which is across europe so it shows that can be done something on the european public the green party is not the strongest of cause but they have an impact in many countries now and let's see they will be involved i guess in coalition building the bent to the money of the pro e.u. european movement thanks very much for the want. you're watching t w special coverage of the european election eyebright thomas european mainstream political parties have taken a hit in sunday's elections for the european parliament the highest voter turnout in 20 years and seen right wing populist parties making significant gains but concerns about climate change we've just been discussing them have also boosted the pro e.u. greens group across the bloc especially here in germany where the greens doubled their share of the vote now that makes them the country's 2nd biggest party in the european parliament.
2:25 pm
and will be continuing our coverage of the european elections later in the show still to come here on the eve of u.t.v. . wins the monaco grand prix but calls it the hardest race of his career and presently niki lauda. first let's go on to some other international news u.s. present donald trump says he would back to pan's efforts to open communications with around the president said he was willing to talk to tehran to avoid quote terrible things and that's developing tensions between the 2 countries as comments coming on the 2nd day of his visit to japan where he met with the country's newly crowned emperor. a morning of pageantry at the imperial palace before a day of negotiations trump became the 1st foreign dignitary to meet japan's new emperor or not or he too since the monarch ascended to the throne. but the
2:26 pm
u.s. president didn't only come to japan for a salute of on a. he spent the day sitting down with prime minister shinzo ave to talk business. we've had some great talk on trade we've had some great talk on the military and we just guessed of course north korea i think we've made a lot of progress or a lot of subjects we have to do a little catching up with japan because they've been doing much more business with us we'd like to do a little bit more business in the reverse the balance well we'll get the balance of trade i think straight now to rapidly early in the trip trump served up warnings about what he sees as an unfair trade balance he wants to plan to buy more u.s. goods including military hardware. the u.s. and japan are both global financial giants are like neighboring china japan isn't
2:27 pm
keen to engage in a tussle over tariffs there's no talk of an outright trade war for now for the 2 allies another day of diplomatic posturing lies ahead. you know use your dog joins us now in the studio for more on this story good morning joe. as we've been hearing there the president has been warning of what he's calling an unfair trade balance between the u.s. and japan that really pushing this meeting what are the tensions between the 2 countries on this front right now well the main problem is that the u.s. is buying move goods from japan then the other way around that's a trade imbalance and trump doesn't like that and a lot. of discussion really cars and car parts so trump has been threatening for the past month to actually impose a 25 percent tariff on cars from foreign cars and that would be devastating for the japanese economy because as everybody knows japan like 6 polkas especially also to
2:28 pm
the u.s. and the 2nd thing is agricultural products because japan has traditionally been always been very unwilling to accept every culture as products from the u.s. and that's a very important point for trump because his base is also a lot of people in farm country so yeah that's what trump is trying to basically push depend on ok no no japan is also being pushed by the trumpet ministration play more of a regional role in security difficult because of the country's pacifist constitution which i've seen some changes but is there a willingness in japan to do that yes so that for us. japan has been paying up the military budget actually for the past 7 years it's a very good military budget right now and trump and actually scheduled to go to military tomorrow they can show a look at this. we've upgraded this actual military base and also especially their
2:29 pm
voice aboard fighter jets american made fighters it's so that's 2 things one wants to show us we're buying american goods and military equipment as we've seen and also we are going up our presence in the region but there are limits to that because japan still needs the u.s. north korea is right next by china's right next by and without the u.s. they would you know it is a very important regional ally isn't it what can we can expect to come out of this meeting will we see any deals on on trade on you know japan taking more products from america some more military cooperation what's going to come out of this well basically analysts say they were supposed to be a trade deal at the end of this meeting but that's not going to happen especially because of is facing parliamentary elections soon in july so trump has also tweeted that he's going to hold off on actual results well the thing is also that they're going to meet another 3 times i think g 20 is the next time trump is already coming
2:30 pm
to japan next month again so this is largely it's symbolic what we're seeing here ok so a lot's going to have to wait till after the japanese elections ok and there are in october i guess a little july july and so we'll have to wait till the end of the summer or summer to see more on this during thanks very much for coming. let's check out some of the other stories making the news this hour protest leaders and sit down have called for today general strike on tuesday and wednesday it's their latest bid to press the ruling military council to transfer power to a civilian led authorities to dan's main opposition party says it will not support the strike a sign of divisions within the country pro-democracy movement. fighting has broken out again outside the disputed yemeni city of tire yes' lushes allied to the internationally recognized government fired on positions told by who's the rebels the pro-government forces claim they're advancing us.
