kolo to. play. the bad. job. this is d.w. news live from berlin european elections deal a blow to germany's mainstream parties this is 2 of the deceased the worst result for the c.d.u. in its entire history. the ruling conservatives admit they might have lost the country's young voter base which their allegiances to germany's success story of the naacp the greens whose message on climate change help them doubled their seats in the european parliament and nationalist parties topped the vote in a number of european countries but fall short of a predicted surge. plus austrian chancellor sebastian cortes is out opposition
10:01 pm
parties joined forces to remove him with a vote of no confidence backed by the far right freedom party which had been in government with him i'm told just last week. and how far will you go for a good selfie in india the answer is often too far researchers say the country has racked up half of the world's selfie related debt. load. i'm serious oh my god i thank you for joining us. european parties are now jockeying for position after sunday's elections to the e.u. parliament tilt of the balance of power in the bloc now here are some of sunday's key takeaways voters punish traditional centrist parties including germany's governing coalition of conservatives and social democrats but the greens made big advances to become germany's number 2 party and of france's number 3 in the

european parliament right wing populists also had a good night winning the votes in france the u.k. italy and poland now far right a nationalist parties had been predicted to surge to success all across europe but they didn't quite work out that way. france's marine le pen was one of the far right lead to celebrating last night a victory over the party president emmanuel mccall was razor thin but hugely symbolic she ses it means things will have to change in france in future. believes he can get out of the situation where she finds himself tonight the failure to defeat so that he's experienced with a reach and which he will play recklessly with the saying it will not work that is not what the french people expect. in britain and to european leader nigel farrar she also said the success of his party showed not just that britons want to leave

the e.u. but that they also want politics to change fundamentally. but the most significant victory of the night went to material solving these far right league party in italy. there when went beyond all expectations salvini said this was a sign that europe was about to undergo a transformation. only used to lead the 1st party in italy but marine le pen is the 1st party in france and the u.k. nodule for august 1st equally france england it's the sort of a europe that is changing. but despite his success it's unlikely that salvini will be able to fulfill his dream of working with all the nationalists to turn the e.u. on its head from within populist in other countries did not do as well meaning the far right to still be in a minority in the european parliament. and that also divided among themselves
10:04 pm
and to immigrant leader viktor netted more than 50 percent of the vote but disagrees with all the populists on a range of issues even analysts say would be no longer possible. to europe to go back to business as usual given the gains made by such parties. and we can talk about all of this now with yosef yarning from the european council on foreign relations here in berlin he joins us in our studio yoseph thanks for being with us as we said the right wing populist they didn't see the surge that was expected by some but they did have their strongest showing yet and parliamentary elections in europe and we have a graphic here that shows where in europe and to what extent voters opted for these parties let's take a look at this in italy the u.k. poland and hungary over 30 percent of voters went for a right wing populist parties so hearing that figure you know how important will
10:05 pm
they be in terms of affecting policy making in brussels they can create some trouble because they will put pressure on the majority in parliament to stick together because the european parliament unlike national parliaments discipline is not very high because deputies come from very different backgrounds so you usually need to reach across party lines in order to get a majority with a substantial populist nationalist. membership there you have to reach out further in order to get a majority and that means you are have to make more compromises. times you won't have the kind of debates that the parliament needs the debates about what is the right way because all of the pro e.u. parties have to stick together and some for the right so they can certainly cause some trouble but you're saying another big narrative that we saw is that the centrist parties are saying they're supporting again a road and it was a difficult day for them not least in germany let's take
10:06 pm
a closer look now. as the results came in at c.d.u. headquarters the scale of the night's losses became clear. a blow for the chancellor but not a reason to step down. is our elected chance not that we have to think things through we have no plans for a change in leadership because that's not decided by one party alone and chided that's at least i know. it was all vs things work during the cd use way even before polls closed once the votes were counted it was up to the party's leader to admit its shortcomings that's a good this is the c's to me this is the worst result for the c.d.u. in its entire history either at the european or the federal level. and i want to make it completely clear that this is not in line with our claim to be a big tent party but folks who take the fish to the c.d.u. once dominated german politics now voters are asking what the future holds think of
10:07 pm
you and your own god i think they need to put some thought into who's running things and perhaps also communicate more skillful astonished dozens i don't think there's a bright side for them like there was after the last few elections. the greens on the other hand had every reason to celebrate a stunning performance built on their core topics of climate change and digitalisation never has the party been so successful in a nationwide election it doubled its share of the vote at the expense of the governing coalition. of the national level i would hope the government controlled the right conclusions from these elections and that doesn't mean party leaders should worry about what their parties needs are right now but that the government as the name suggests should actually start governing it preferably in terms of the key issues of climate protection and a pro european orientation for the other party in germany's ruling coalition shock and disbelief the social democrats also face their worst ever result in
10:08 pm
a nationwide election. ok so yes if we saw there are 2 big trends that we can take away from the election one we discussed these a centrist party splintering but also smaller parties on the right but also the left like the greens surging so what do they have that the conservatives on the social democrats in the center don't have i think there's one advantage that the greens bring into this is that they look fresh they look young they look more like the mainstream of society where as the traditional parties have become rather old you know they are they are not representative of the mainstream of society and oftentimes they lack the language and i think the greens have going for them that they at this point represent the thieving of large segments of the society much better than than the traditional parties so those traditional parties have lost their credibility which is that yes they do and you know the greens tend to say this is all about climate now i have some doubts whether actually the germans at
10:09 pm
large of so driven by the climate issue that they double the vote for the greens i think that lifestyle thing is much more effective on the greens than the climate issue going forward if we look at where the chips are going to fall in the european parliament you said that at some point now the pro e.u. forces will have to realise they're going to have to band together can they they can but they will not necessarily do it the same way as the traditional coalition between the socialists on the one side and the conservatives on the other side which have basically run this parliament for the past 40 years now and that means when the greens and the liberals have to be tied into a package they will have their own demands and that will not just be a continuation of the old rules they will want to shave the work of the parliament just as the traditional leaders parties have done so in the past how will they want to do so how will this look different well for example they may object to monthly becoming necessarily the candidate of the parliament for the commission president
10:10 pm
simply because. if that was the case then for the next elections it seems that the p.p. would have a structural 1st choice of that position and they will not accept that so that could be one symbolic way in which they contest the old system another one would be that they say what we want a different setting in the in the parliamentary positions when it comes to the presidency when it comes to the committee chairs when it comes to the procedures one quick question on voter turnout over 50 percent the highest in around 20 years what does that tell us people are interested in europe again i think people have understood that the e.u. is not a concrete block it can fall apart now that it's actually something that needs to support of its citizens and so more people have gone to the elections than have done over the past elections and that's a good sign yes of getting from the european council on foreign relations thanks for sharing your insights with us pleasure now austrian chancellor sebastian quits
10:11 pm
and his government have been ousted after opposition parties joined forces in a vote of no confidence it was a spectacular reverse for a leader who only last night was celebrating victory for his party in the european elections in the last half hour austria's president confirmed he hoped to have an interim government in place within a week. i think sebastian courts shortly after losing a historic no confidence vote austria's youngest ever chancellor is not well suits short of serving head of government he wasted no time in lashing out at his former coalition partners. yeah because they got in recent days we've heard only one thing from the freedom party and the socialist party has to go that's their entire program it well i have to say i hate to disappoint you but i'm still here. you know in my view was. the fact of no confidence came after a kick to the freedom party out of the governing coalition called new elections the
