12:00 pm
never read a book like this when i. return to the streets. this is deja vu news live from far led by a new call for action in response to the climate of virgin city former us gov arnold schwarzenegger teams up with swedish teen activist credit to the berg at a special conference in vienna their goal to braise awareness about the threats to our planet. also coming up the race begins for a new e.u.
12:01 pm
leader european heads of government to meet to discuss who will take over from commission president john put juncker but are france and germany heading for a showdown over the issue plus a big surprise in german football outsiders union berlin make their way into the bundesliga for the 1st time in the club's history all the details of last night's nerve racking playoff match against good god. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program the austrian world's summit on climate action is underway right now in vienna organizers are urging world leaders to stick to the agreements outlined in the paris accord and publish new commitments by next year it is the brainchild of former california governor arnold schwarzenegger also in attendance is the swedish climate activist to to embark. she hasn't fired tens
12:02 pm
of thousands of young people around the world with her fridays for futures strike and in her speech she had a stark message for the r.t. . during the last months millions of children have been school striking with the climate gaining lots of attention for the climate crisis but we children are not leaders. nor other scientists unfortunately. but many of you here today are. presidents celebrities politicians c.e.o.'s and journalists people listen to you they are influenced by you. and therefore you have an enormous responsibility and let's be honest this is a responsibility that most of you have failed to take. and let's talk now about
12:03 pm
that enormous responsibility i'm joined by my colleague john from our environment desk i mean you really see it there a call for action as we've heard from her time and time again how high is the hope for that action right now i think it's really high and increasingly it's growing quickly in europe for instance on the back of these european elections where green party source across the continent and with things like christian very frightened future movement for instance in the u.k. this extinction rebellion protests for the. i think people are really starting to recognise the importance of climate change in their daily lives and i started to model more from government officials try actually do something about it so they're demanding more about you know so far we haven't really seen that sort of dramatic action but one place where we are at least seeing something and would like to highlight that right now is the european state of luxembourg they're taking the bus
12:04 pm
or the tram may soon be free of charge to make more people renounce their cars have a look at another traffic jam in luxembourg the daily news since but the minister for mobility says this is going to change luxembourg is said to become the 1st country in the world to offer free use of on public transport nationwide by 2020 emission i for fish we simply have to understand that a car is not always the ideal mode of transport in urban areas of course we have to offer people alternatives and that means we have to invest a lot more in the stephen expanding the rail network alone will cost luxembourg around $2200000000.00 euros the goal is to make it possible to transfer to the tram bus or bike all electric of course in particular the idea is to get the 200000 commuters who travel daily from belgium france and germany 70 percent of them by car to switch to public transit to achieve this park and ride spaces are being
12:05 pm
double. world and car lanes are being replaced by tram lines. that's for. an office space was being planned you had to provide a minimum number of parking spaces for years ago we turned this around so now the number of parking spots is limited. to. the transport authorities control center the have of data from across the system if there are delays additional vehicles are dispatched after all people will only switch to public transport if they can count on quality and service but ticket machines will remain at the train stations those who prefer to ride 1st class will still have to pay. ok so just one initiative there i mean but you know if we look at in the grand scheme of things really just a drop in the bucket reducing carbon emissions what else needs to be done.
12:06 pm
so much more else needs to be done but it's very hard to talk about these concretely without sort of understanding how interlinked all these different places are so one of the big issues and this may be that such a focus of the conference is things like saving biodiversity and so the damage we're doing to nature. but one of the problems i think a lot of the activists find all of the scientists find is that because these issues the 7th link but they're also quite abstract it's very difficult for people to really engage with them and that's why one of the focuses of the conference which i thought with great interesting is about climate communication and how to get people to care about how to get people to take action on it and i think that's one thing we see with figures like honest votes and gratitude. i mean they come from completely different backgrounds we've got this 71 euro action star bodybuilder and a 16 year old school go both have extreme impacts all over the world with really
12:07 pm
being able to communicate a message around climate that scientists say they're struggling to get across sarah i think as a focus that definitely give the more room to be able to actually engage with people and get them to go through that maybe more dense allusions around say green financing or divestment from fossil fuels and so i didn't run from our environment desk thank you thank. you leaders are meeting today to talk about who will take over some of the blocks key roles following last week's elections to the european parliament among the jobs up for grabs as commission president a role currently held by john called younger german chancellor angela merkel says that she wants a decision to be taken quickly but she's at odds with france's president emanuel over how the candidate should be chosen more on that in just a moment 1st a look at some of the candidates in the running their style go to moments. or. the elections are over but the race to succeed as the
12:08 pm
next commission president has just started too many he is the front runner manfred veba the lead candidate of the largest group in the parliament the conservative european peoples party despite a loss of $38.00 seats his group and him still claim the e.u.'s top job but brokering a majority in parliament will likely prove difficult. for france to moments from the social democrats it will be even more difficult the dutchman's s. and d. group came in 2nd with a total loss of 40 seats even if he managed to form a coalition with the greens liberals and the left party he would still fall short of a majority in parliament. it is the 1st time in 40 years that the big center right and center left groups aren't able to control a majority of seats in the european parliament so some think she might come out as
12:09 pm
the winner. the best of denmark this serving competition commissioner didn't run as an official candidate during the campaign however after her liberal alliance made strong gains she made clear that she is up for the presidency in the end it will be up to them the leaders of the member states will choose their nominee for the job and it might be somebody nobody has on the list just gets. on a teri schultz who is joining us from brussels so as we heard there terry well a lot of people on the left on let's start 1st with the role of president of the european commission just walk us through the significance of this job. sara not only is the president of the european commission job open but at the same time as the european parliament turns over you've got a new head of the european council and you'll choose a new president of the parliament and this year by chance the head of the european
12:10 pm
central bank is that too but here in brussels the plum job is very clearly president of the european commission not only is the commission the only branch that can propose legislation which of course potentially has a huge impact on all $28.00 member states but this person also will decide who gets which dossier so every country will propose a commissioner but then the president of the commission gets to decide who gets to work on trade who will head up the energy. directorate general who will get security who will get stuck with force or fisheries so that will have a huge impact on the future direction of the european union and nobody is going to give up the fight for that job easily now because a lot of power plays in the works there and we'll see how they you know roll out here there's some disunity that we have to mention among european leaders about how the next candidate should be chosen and germany's angela merkel is pushing for a quick decision let's have a listen. we want to find
12:11 pm
a solution as quickly as possible because the european parliament will meet at the beginning of july and it would of course be desirable there were already proposal of the european council so that stuff could be carried out very quickly. so we just heard of their america wants a quick solution but the main parties you know they did not get the big majorities that they had hoped for is this going to make finding an agreement more difficult. incredibly so sarah and not only is there a fight over who will be this person there's a fight over how they will be chosen so as you heard the chancellor say she wants this person chosen quickly which basically everybody does but in saying this she seems to favor the process of choosing one of the candidates nominated by the main political groups and in that case the favorite would most likely be the head of the european people's party the largest political group german men for a day ever but as i mentioned earlier there's a lot more going on behind the scenes and now with the head of the european central
12:12 pm
bank job also open germany would very much like to have a german in that position so if you get the head of the european central bank you can't also have the head of the european commission that simply isn't going to work when you have to bargain among 28 member states french president emanuel says he doesn't really like this system of picking the pre-approved candidates because he doesn't want ever he wants the 3rd place political group margaret investing so you've got chancellor merkel and emanuel mcclellan disagreeing over the very process of how you're going to choose that candidate now these 2 leaders will meet today before the summit so they'll be hashing these things out all that said we don't expect to have any candidate emerging as the favorite tonight in fact the most we can hope for is that they start to agree on a process for choosing this person and perhaps a timeline but that timeline i expect is going to be very long with all of these other disputes going on behind the scenes so perhaps perhaps the opposite of what
12:13 pm
angela merkel wants in terms of timeline you know it's interesting terry because france and germany we don't usually see them squabbling so openly like this over issues of this nature why do you think that this is happening now. well what needs to be understood is that perhaps they are not so much at odds everyone wants this person chosen quickly they simply want their own person in the job so it may be that miracle and mcluhan can come to an agreement because as i mentioned if germany were to get their candidate against a vitamin in the in the job of the head of the european central bank then chess america would have to back off on the european commission president there's no way germany is going to be allowed to hold both of those top jobs so that may give me a clue in a way to slight his candidate mcclish divest into the commission president job she has a lot of support people would like to see a woman head of the european commission even chancellor merkel herself wouldn't be so opposed to that on the other hand you've still got friends timmermans you can't count him out he's one of the most fervent pro europeans around and his group the
12:14 pm
socialist and democrats came in 2nd so while the results of the european parliamentary elections mean that the european people's party and the social scene democrats can't to sew up this nomination there is going to be a very long fight over whether friends timmermans are more aggressive vestavia or as was mentioned in our in our package somebody else altogether gets to take this top top job here in brussels the president of the european commission and that's what's what's the priority on the agenda tonight as european leaders come to brussels teri schultz in brussels thank you. let's get a quick check now some other stories making news around the world the austrian chancellor sebastian curt's is vowing to fight on after he was ousted in a no confidence motion he says that he will stand again as a conservative candidate in early elections set for september kurtz's ousting came in the wake of a corruption scandal involving as far right coalition partner. at least 40 people have been killed in prison riots in brazil authorities say that the deadly clashes
12:15 pm
were sparked by fights between rival gangs in 3 different jails across the town of mad now else the government has mobilized additional stuff to secure those persons . a man armed with knives has killed 2 people including a child in a stabbing spree near tokyo japanese media report the suspect killed himself after the attack which targeted schoolgirls waiting for a bus in the morning rush hour. reports from britain show that knife crime is on the rise throughout the country the number of attacks has soared with nearly 300 people stabbed to death last year the problem is especially acute at the capital london they're members of ethnic minorities and gangs are disproportionately affected both as victims and as perpetrators as report there has been much criticism over the government's response. to new day a new crime scene last night here in east london
12:16 pm
a 15 year old was stabbed to death with a knife. social worker paul mckenzie has visited many such cream scenes but this time it really gets to him the victim was afraid the business you were. certain to watch isn't did you see these are everywhere you see a bunch of flowers years ago and it meant something you really sort of went over there the request. is too many to read more because somebody wanted to prove something to somebody else that's that's the side 3rd wife has become. a point system. and now somebody somewhere say. they know that and that person but. often it's a case of rivalry between members of youth gangs. but innocent bystanders can also fall victim to knife crime and some gun use knifing someone is proof a youngster is worthy of belonging to
12:17 pm
a guy who was. just. looking at all like 13 years old be the rest of the night by a large what happened. mackenzie talks to gang members and makes videos to show how quickly things are deteriorating in some parts of london. why do you carry a 15 inch not crazy big and you get scared but if you say. cause i don't want someone put up with me let china trying to kill me so i live. on a day. all mckenzie feels that the government doesn't take knife crime seriously enough he supports an initiative which demands that the governments treat the violence as a national emergency you know you may imagine that this was my son i say it was my motives in 2015. but i think that may be a tad for nighttime in the 5th of february b.c.'s i was knocked out. in
12:18 pm
some neighborhoods young people don't leave home without a knife as they think they must be prepared to defend themselves. jason isaacs was stabbed to death one and a half years ago he was shown kendall's eldest son. now her younger children always had to come home straight from school because she feared for their lives jason was killed early in the evening when he was out with a few friends. just the ones with 4 friends so 5 of them and yet to run for their lives and they all went in different directions and jessen got car and stabs 8 times. jason was targeted by a gang which he himself had nothing to do with everyone that knew jess and he always hoped she would question which was nice because every and every time he went
12:19 pm
our physical eyes i was i love you mom case and that's what we got that night and we did everything together really we he was a very family person. jason's killer was caught he was just 17 at the time rock videos of him and his girl can be seen from the internet known as drill the style of hip hop is very popular with british youths. cannot. talk about stabbing people in the back which is what they do and jason obviously was stabbed in the in the park so. be sure here is a systemic one violence is normalised now unless we start looking. forever of the young people we're never going to get to the bottom of these very values in the new belief systems they need to believe there is
12:20 pm
a future you talk to some of these young people they can't see past 20 and any society that has a generation of young people that can't see past 20 you've got it you've got to address that from above. that means that republicans you know this to aren't any quick fixes to the situation the british government has now committed itself to investing in youth work and strengthening the police presence. everyone knows the problem has simply become too large to ignore. now to some football news and fans of a club here in the german capital. are celebrating their team's historic achievement in moving up to germany's top tier for the 1st time fans invaded the pitch after the club's playoff success of gart a goalless draw in berlin last night was good enough for you know they progress to the top tier thanks to the away goals that they scored in a 2 all draw in stuttgart last thursday the promotion means that berlin will have 2
12:21 pm
teams in the bundesliga next. now you know they're one of germany's most unique clubs they've overcome serious financial difficulties in the past and their fans are renowned for their fierce loyalty anthony how from sports has more on that and a whole lot more so how big of an achievement is this really enormous fairy tales like this is the very reason that you have to look beyond and beyond by munich on the football's fringes where you find these fantastic very real stories of david versus goliath goliath being struck out they've got one player benjamin provide who's a world cup winner with france he's with 40000000 euros he alone now you look back at the union side and their entire squad is not with hof that much this is very much big this is small when you mention the building had severe money troubles they the club stud the compound the fans started a campaign called bleed for building it's they've done i think their blood got paid
12:22 pm
for it and raised 1500000 euros by selling their own blood for this club i say that to paint the picture it sounds verse and but it's very real with passion and a paint the picture of what you're going to find and how much they fans truly kid from this tiny little stadium on the edge of the forest and the southeast corner of the. from the age of footballing relevance the sound of the final whistle delivered when your fans the right step up into. the bundesliga on unsteady faked. her own fans spilled on to the streets around the stadium to light up the not worth of beacon for the underdogs. victory after which woods simply 5. was. the one i have no words i can just have my words do you care
12:23 pm
about half of what the reason i ask what you do in the book is the high for no idea the fellow who did not honor you are finally on the line. in the tradition of these passionate rather than fan base the celebrations were unselfconscious and when you're in berlin are a club by the people for the people and very much all of these people and now by the bundesliga the footballing world is about to get a test was. see the tears there you see the emotion there not your run of the mill modern football club are they know they are not their former east german state sponsored club and they've been anti establishment from the very birth and they remind that whites today they pre-game experience is sitting there waiting for the football to start there's no pre-show there's no smoke there's no fireworks there's no music off the goals and i love it that why they are almost a club from another time and that's the why they're going to run what will they
12:24 pm
bring to the band as they go i would say ever going to run wrap it up inside be a breath and football the way it was it's really i really are from another time and it's good they going to become a distant nation for the football tourists the fans who say they're going to be there but i think they're going to get more people around the globe wanting to be they wanted to come to see the football like it was and why perhaps it should be everyone loves an underdog story and i bet a lot of people are going to be rooting for them and for me howard sports thank you . well now at least 11 people are known to have died trying to climb the world's highest peak mount everest season most are believed to have suffered from out to sickness caused by low amounts of oxygen but a number of the deaths are being blamed on overcrowding. they came for an adventure in the remotest place on earth they got cues carnage and tried. who filmed this long breathless crawl to the top of everest turned back fearing for

his life it has become a death ray is there because there was massive traffic jam and people are pushing themselves for not even care people of doing it they do it they try to summit and they instead of summiting they kill themselves and it's turned into a bad thing and i think people should really look into it. the reason for the sneaking lines of mountaineers at the top of the world a record number of parent and a narrow window of good weather the delays made the already extreme conditions worse according to this climber who has the scars to prove it. but i had to wait a while for the traffic to decrease so we could go. back to that because of that i was very cold and i was protecting myself. that if there was no traffic then maybe this frostbite would not have happened that. robin fisher is one of the
