central bank is that too but here in brussels the plum job is very clearly president of the european commission not only is the commission the only branch that can propose legislation which of course potentially has a huge impact on all $28.00 member states but this person also will decide who gets which dossier so every country will propose a commissioner but then the president of the commission gets to decide who gets to work on trade who will head up the energy. directorate general who will get security who will get stuck with force or fisheries so that will have a huge impact on the future direction of the european union and nobody is going to give up the fight for that job easily now because a lot of power plays in the works there and we'll see how they you know roll out here there's some disunity that we have to mention among european leaders about how the next candidate should be chosen and germany's angela merkel is pushing for a quick decision let's have a listen. we want to find

a solution as quickly as possible because the european parliament will meet at the beginning of july and it would of course be desirable there were already proposal of the european council so that stuff could be carried out very quickly. so we just heard of their america wants a quick solution but the main parties you know they did not get the big majorities that they had hoped for is this going to make finding an agreement more difficult. incredibly so sarah and not only is there a fight over who will be this person there's a fight over how they will be chosen so as you heard the chancellor say she wants this person chosen quickly which basically everybody does but in saying this she seems to favor the process of choosing one of the candidates nominated by the main political groups and in that case the favorite would most likely be the head of the european people's party the largest political group german men for a day ever but as i mentioned earlier there's a lot more going on behind the scenes and now with the head of the european central

bank job also open germany would very much like to have a german in that position so if you get the head of the european central bank you can't also have the head of the european commission that simply isn't going to work when you have to bargain among 28 member states french president emanuel says he doesn't really like this system of picking the pre-approved candidates because he doesn't want ever he wants the 3rd place political group margaret investing so you've got chancellor merkel and emanuel mcclellan disagreeing over the very process of how you're going to choose that candidate now these 2 leaders will meet today before the summit so they'll be hashing these things out all that said we don't expect to have any candidate emerging as the favorite tonight in fact the most we can hope for is that they start to agree on a process for choosing this person and perhaps a timeline but that timeline i expect is going to be very long with all of these other disputes going on behind the scenes so perhaps perhaps the opposite of what
