this is the daily news live from but the tussle for the top job in brussels is underway and it could take some time european union leaders all clashing over there should be the next president of the european commission the post-election summit in brussels has so far failed to ease tensions. also coming up she was elected mayor of a tough your city with more than 50 percent of the vote that this ethnic kurdish politician

call have clashed over who should take europe's top job merkel has made it clear she favors a german candidate for the post of european commission president has called for the selection system to be changed it comes as government heads meet in brussels to discuss the blocs leadership for the next 5 years let's have a listen to what the 2 heads of state had to say after last night's talks. because the german government is committed to the principle of the need to come to that however the parties represented in the coalition have different views as to which candidate is best suited to this if everyone just peace with their preferred means really stuck because most of the groups are the majority of them and even if 2 of them work together they still have a majority we need 3 joins in 4 groups to do this. so some obvious differences of opinion and some more on that i'm joined by our correspondent in brussels teri

schultz hi terry now the european council is split into those those defending the lead candidate system and there are those who are against it can you tell us a bit more about these 2 options sure of the european parliament elections and their fragmented results through the system into disarray it used to be that the lead candidate for the largest political group the european people's party was basically a shoo in now that that party and the number 2 political group the socialists and democrats lost so many seats they're no longer guaranteed that their candidate will get in and that's bad news for the german candidate munford bever and you know it's been kind of funny that this system is called the spits and cut it out in german even in english but the results of the european parliament election have meant that it is no longer the system that everybody accepts so is it now up to the european council president donald tusk to find some kind of compromise that suits both sides . yes that's to 6 job on every issue and this is bound to be
10:04 am
a big one for him because you not only have countries and political groups disagreeing over the system itself but then you go below that and they don't agree on candidates munford bever is by no means a unified choice you still have friends timmermans for the 2nd group who has a lot of popularity and you have mcgrath a vested the 3rd largest political group the liberals who also has a lot of support so just has a big job ahead of him and they wanted to have it wrapped up by the next e.u. summit at the end of june it doesn't look like that's going to be possible now both total to the sky and president mccall both said they wanted agenda balanced nomen need less to be used top jobs are we going to be seeing more women taking on key roles that you know we hear this every time the top jobs turnover. of euchre also said he wanted more women and he ended up with a commission that has only one 3rd of female commissioners so they all say they're going to do this and we'll see if that happens
10:05 am
a lot of it has to do with what nominees the member states put forward to brussels you can't choose from a female candidate if you haven't been given them but margaret's investor has said that every country needs to propose to female commissioner candidates that would make a big difference and of course she has also been gaining a lot of popularity as a strong female candidate for president a man you mcclung says he wants investigated to be the commission president that would make a big difference the last time we didn't have a female candidate running for president of the european commission so it remains to be seen whether they actually succeed in this but at least there's a lot of talk about it with to ask himself saying this is a priority teri schultz in brussels thanks so much. now turkey's largest city istanbul is preparing for a rerun of its may oral election in just a few weeks time the country's electoral commission a null the result of an early a vote following a complaint from president wretch up tight at the ones a posse his party lost the election to cram him olu who represented an alliance of

opposition parties elsewhere in turkey it's not uncommon that candidates who have won an election are prevented from taking up their positions our correspondent visited the kurdish majority city of van she met a woman there who won her local election back in march but hasn't yet been able to start serving as men. servants around her. and it's only when do john catch must walk through her neighborhood in the city of van it always takes a while she's constantly recognized by people involved in conversations asked for advice it's hardly surprising many you think of catch must as then they are voices that is what they are there just minutes into a local elections at the end of march she stood for the pro kurdish opposition party h d p in vans it amid district she won with almost 54 percent of the vote but her joy did not last long. enough for your well to feel secure care museum although

never thought that i would not receive my mandate i wasn't expecting this because the election commission had approved me as a candidate. 2 months after the vote people here are still appalled by the election board's decision to close. the lane there by i think this is very unfair. decision is wrong whoever wins the election should take office. there in minutes by not giving her the mandate they're stealing the will of the people most of them in. the election commission says good catch most should not be mayor because she was dismissed. from her job by an emergency decree following the attempted coup in 2016 despite international criticism the turkish government had tens of thousands of state employees detained sacked was suspended. was a teacher at the time was also on the list she still doesn't know why but i mean if

a bill to legalize the term a nation of pregnancies up to 14 weeks a similar motion passed the lower house of congress last year but was defeated in the senate due to opposition from religious springs. now the nigerian president mohammed who bihari is set to be inaugurated for the 2nd time today but not all nigerians are happy about his reelection about hauffe of registered voters under the age of 35 and many young people is skeptical that their 76 year old president is the right man to revamp the economy. is in the capital abuja she spoke to young voters who see no reason to celebrate today's inauguration. of these young men who want this cocktail bar and if the president were to stop by they would make a very special drink for him. give him a strong drink or so maybe you could resets. where you get
10:12 am
a strong drink you puts you to sleep when you wake up maybe you is going to think about all these youths gave all their strong drink let's see what we could do for them. they feel is doing way too little to empower the youth all of them have studied abroad back here they are often called for into the nigeria's makeshift infrastructure such as its regular power to choose they must spend 2 $102.00 was dollars every month just to keep their drinks cool their youths are your where vibrant we want to do something so if the government can give us. i think who created anything give you power in terms of your power in terms of influence power in terms of electricity when we get electricity in france with the full course i'm going to use and infrastructure and how do you get business. has promised all of that but it's hard to find someone who believes in his policies every area
10:13 am
that we have new does of summer but i'm not seeing anything give me the people they need leaving so the issue i feel that we should give we would after a while i finally find a horse supporter who is eager to join the festivities around his president we need patience room was no buttes and they'd be the saints but i don't see it but. for now down person them with a war president the support of a majority of the electorate the youth about half of the registered voters are under $35.00 but only every 3rd of the electorate went out to vote at all a historic low which does not bode well for president biharis 2nd term. i'm joined now by g.w. sonny for his reporting from eagle square in a booth where president biharis inauguration will be taking place in
10:14 am
a short while funny we just heard there in your report about various apathy the many young nigerians who don't support hari what's turnout looking like today. well right now actually the crowd is bigger than just an hour ago everybody is here except the president of the vice president they are about to arrive in a short while and the actually swearing in is going to take place in one hour from now nobody comes to the turnout in terms of you know just a normal citizen i expect this to be a very small gathering a very small party also here in the city of which has to do with the fact that the country remains very much split over the question who should lead this country in the ditch direction which has to do with has to do with the it's connected to the voter turnout number while it was historically no the lowest in 20 years since the end of may to rule but it also has to do with the fact that a lot of people did not want a president who hari to have
10:15 am
a 2nd chance 41 percent actually voted for the main contenders party i think while because p.d.p. party yes it is reservation and skepticism that is mixing among this entire this entire integration day why of course you have to point out also people are celebrating because they say president who are is the right man to tackle all those challenges that this country is facing so some of these challenges that a president who hari as he enters his 2nd term what would you say he needs to so close on what are his priorities. while he's basically inheriting his own promises he made 4 years ago that he repeated this time around isabel he said that his priority is to revamp the call on the way to make sure that the security and stability in this country to make sure that nigeria is not making headlines anymore as being the capital of the world when it comes to pull over to you but when you ask young people what they want they're going to tell you they
10:16 am
need very basic things for example as pointed out in that report they need electricity they need education you want to make sure that there actually are really diffused sure that the promise to be of this country so there are so many issues that are surrounding this next 4 years of president who are the some people may actually ask others for years in office and those are his supporters who say give president who are another chance because it is simply so many tasks laying. after hours that he has made 4 years ago or during his 1st time during the past 4 years or simply not enough and there needs to be real change in nigeria which is not president laurie. and if a child in nigeria's capital a big thanks so much. you're watching the news still to come. for me no one legend mickey lauder is laid to rest in vienna coming up we'll take a look at the legacy of one of the most illustrious figures in the world of the

nation's wars. but 1st it's the deadliest climbing season in years of the world's highest peak at least 11 people have died trying to get to the top of mount everest over the past few weeks alone the deaths are being blamed on bottlenecks caused by overcrowding on the mountain slopes and the police authorities have handed out almost 400 climbing permits for this season that's more than ever before. they came for an adventure in the remotest place on oust the qs carnage and tragedy. the man who filmed this long breathless crawl to the top of everest turned back fearing for his life it has become a death race there because there was massive traffic jam and people are pushing themselves or not even care people of doing it they do it they try to summit and they instead of summiting they kill themselves and it's turned into
10:18 am
a bad thing and i think people should really look into it. the reason for the sneaking lines of mine to near the top of the world a record number of parent and a narrow window of good weather the delays made the already extreme conditions worse according to this climber who has the scars to prove it. if you look at it in experience climates don't even know how to time the oxygen masks around their face. these inexperienced climbers can create problems for the rest of the climbers. as far as death is concerned it's the climbers themselves who take the risk robin fisher is one of the 11 people to have died this season he shot this video describing the conditions as he set out for the summit.
10:19 am
but it is the death zone near the hillary step where the congestion is most dangerous to resume officials have promised to implement safety barriers but no limit the number of climbers who come to our mountains is actually quite low compared to other countries we're not going to fix or limit the number of climbers we're trying to get more tourists and climbers to come to nepal by giving them better facilities and safety we want to encourage them to come for both pleasure and fame but there is a plea not operations gets underway on everest it's not just rubbish they're collecting for more bodies were plucked off the mountain another reminder that the pursuit of pleasure and fame can come at a grievous price. all right let's bring in any canadian filmmaker who's climb mount everest several times now he joins us from the poles capital katmandu and you you were climbing everest just last week i believe for a film you're currently shooting tell us what's making it so much more dangerous
10:20 am
why a climb is dying so for the very 1st time with my own eyes that going on everest 8 times i've stood on the summit 3 times now for the very 1st time with my own eyes i saw the infamous queues you know that are making headlines right now and on our way from camp 3 to camp 4 we could already see that there were you know 40 or 50 climbers ahead of us and that evening there were over 250 climbers that reading to summit so the queues are obviously a huge issue you know the narrow weather window as mentioned earlier is also another issue and of course there's the grand issue of lack of experience on the mountain that's causing a lot of problems and many of these fatalities said the government simply be strict in the way it hands out climbing climbing punit. i believe so you know they should limit the number of permits china has led the way this year with their approach of limiting the number of permits i think the other thing that would be
10:21 am
very helpful would be you know creating a prerequisite of having summit in 1000 meter peak before you're seeing a very inexperienced climbers you know there are actually some climbers on the mountain where everest was their 1st mountain that would be incredibly helpful the other thing as well is i mean i just think people need to take this more seriously you know we see these images on social media we see them in the media we see seemingly ordinary people standing on top of the world and it's creating a culture of well i can if they can do it i can do it but then people are showing up they're trying to save money they're hiring irresponsible outfitters and those outfitters are also responsible for some of these fatalities as well as the climbers themselves said so essentially it's people overestimating their own abilities and a lack of understanding of of really what climbing mount everest means. so lack of understanding but it's also a lack of support you know when you hire a local company and pay $25.00 to $35000.00 you're compromising quality you're not
10:22 am
getting adequate sherpa support you're not getting enough oxygen you not getting the right strategy or leadership to prepare you to go into the death zone to climb to 9000 meters above sea level and to understand exactly what you're getting yourself into and it also having the leadership to educate you on when enough is enough you know you see climbers that push themselves beyond the limit by some many people that were climbing up to the summit and they really should have been turned around i tried to coax turning around saying you know there's there's no shame you know and being humble and admitting defeat because your life legacy is not worth it . yes you said yourself you've climbed everest several times just tell us your own experience what does it feel like if you get to the top of the top of every everest describe the thing to us. well in the past it's absolutely been exhilarating in 2013 i stood on top of the world we had the entire summit to ourselves this year as we approached the top you know one of the young ladies from the documentary
10:23 am
dream of everest that i was shooting she pulled her oxygen mask off her hair is for us and you know and she said to me you know where's the summit billionaire and i pulled my own off and i said do you not see the 60 people. piled up on a rock so that was that was my experience just exhilarating but this year it was quite complicated being up there because there were so many people and cycling in katmandu thank you so much for speaking to us. formula one legend mickey loud i will be buried today in his hometown vienna austria he died last week at the age of 70 a 3 time world champion loud acclaimed his first 6 title with ferrari in 1975 a horrific crash at the german crown pray the following year very nearly cost the austrian his life allowed and made a remarkable recovery and went on to win 2 more championships in 1977 and 84 an iconic figure retired in 1905 but he remained active in formula one throughout his life. and tom de noise here from sports to tell us
10:24 am
a little bit more tom thanks for joining us tell us what's happening today at the plant you know so today from st stephen's cathedral right in the heart of the you know there's going to be a memorial service for mickey lauder. a chance for fans and notables associates colleagues and friends of louder to say their last goodbyes of course in attendance among others is lewis hamilton who dedicated his win on the weekend just gone the monaco grand prix to niki lauda saying this was the hardest race i've ever had that was for you nicky your fighting spirit was right there with me every step of the way alongside lewis hamilton and of course plenty of other notables from the world of formula one austrian president alexander vanderbilt is going to be attendance as well on those faults in asia following the memorial service in the morning there's then go to be a public mass followed by a private funeral later on for close associates family members etc of niki lauda.
10:25 am
he's actually going to be buried in his ferrari racing overalls. he was he was such a champion he was so admired let's talk about his legacy how will he be remembered that well i mean of course in kind of very basic terms as one of the most successful drivers in the history of formula one very few people ever won as many championships or as many races as niki lauda did during his career but of course it was more than just you know his to just go successes that captured the public imagination. you touched on of course the miraculous recovery that mickey lauder made after that horrific crash in nuremberg in 1976 he was read his last rights in hospital after that crash that's really how close it came to costing him his life he only missed 2 races following that incident and the 3rd he was already back in the cockpit competing for the for the championship which he very nearly won he was described by his contemporary jackie stewart. as one of the best drivers of all time and of course was one of the most courageous. he remained present in formula
10:26 am
one after his retirement as you mentioned and was instrumental in bringing lewis hamilton to the miss a these team which has been so done on in the past few years you know he also had a big hand in creating one of the most dominant champions of the modern era a true great school all right. thanks so much. all right a quick reminder of the top story we're following for you today german chancellor angela merkel and french president and kong have clashed over who should take the european union's top job to tensions calm as the 2 leaders meet with all the e.u. heads of government in brussels to discuss the bloke's leadership for the next 5 years. and coming up next a d w business with chris you're going to be talking cryptocurrency is right on have just when you thought there was a right to forget about them group of currencies are staging here markable come back with the price for a bit corn for example the most popular current group of currency and source 70
