i'm joined now by 2 a yaakov son he's program director of care international in northwest syria in gaza the un to have turkey which is near the syrian border thank you so much for being on our program so tell us from your perspective what this new offensive by the syrian government what does it mean for the 3000000 people who are still living and is live. yack good morning and thanks for having me it's a very dramatic situation we have around 3000000 people is in the province and it's important to remember that a big part of these people have already been displaced from their homes if not one but multiple times before since the shelling and the heavy arable barden started on a month ago we've seen more than $270000.00 people fleeing homes getting out of the

rules and seeking essentially safer places to stay in the northern parts of italy because of the turkish border we've seen more than 21 health facilities as reported by the u.n. has been been into rickly or directly targeted as part of this offensive we've seen them high number of schools attacked and of course also very high number of civilians affected by this so it's it's a very dramatic situation and as the situation continues to escalate it's about to be probably the biggest to jerry catastrophe we've seen in syria so far now are you anticipating more people to make their way from the lead and head towards turkey it's difficult to see i mean for now the border areas on the syrians articles of turkey is extremely crowded already they have for years been sort of the most save areas and so there is already if not hundreds thousands millions that are residing in makeshift camps. unfinished buildings and trying to seek basic assistance and

protection there. whether they will cross the border or not is uncertain but you can ask yourself where would people go with when there's nowhere else to goes in chile well we do know that turkey is already home to more than 3 and a half 1000000 refugees so what's next for them. that's right turkey is the biggest refuelled in country in the world care is working both inside syria as part of our humanitarian response to this crisis and also in in turkey supporting the refugees there is is a of course a lot more stable situation to turkish side of the border there is access to basic services but it's important to remember that was such a high amount of refugees we sort of resource the depleted and the turkish society is stretched to its limits to try to cope with this miserable refugees. to a yaakov sun a director of care international in syria many thanks indeed for your insights.

senseless. and impose tremendous grief upon the people of virginia beach the commonwealth and this country. a country where mass shootings occur with disturbing frequency one monitoring group said it was the 150th mass shooting in the u.s. this year. here in germany the government's commissioner for preventing anti-semitism has urged people across the country to wear a traditional jewish skullcap today in an act of solidarity against intolerance the call comes amid an increase in anti semitic incidence in germany we'll hear from the commissioner in just a moment but 1st met a jewish man in berlin who wears the skull cap or keep eyes it's also known but is careful about being seen in public with it. david pearl wears a skull cap and

a prayer tussle as part of everyday life but when he goes outside he puts the tassel in a pocket and he hides the skull cap with a hat david his wife and children have lived in berlin for 5 years after spending some time in israel there are many things he can't take for granted anymore he's experienced too much hostility for my whole city sometimes is a traffic jam on the street where i live and one time 3 arabic looking men got out of a car and they started spitting at me and harassing me saying you dirty jew who stab you today. his experience is far from unusual police statistics show that the number of anti-semitic crimes in germany rose from 1504 in 2017 to 7999 a year later an increase of nearly 20 percent the overwhelming majority are attributed to far right perpetrators. for the rise in anti-semitic

acts as a result of the coarsening of discourse the readiness to act out in a racist way and against minorities. to hits the spot of movements like biggie. and a large part of the alternative bird germany i've. done that all adds up to a decisive change the. people who used to hold back now say it's time to strike that's the danger. and that's why we have to act decisively and make a clear statement that we want no hate crimes. germany guarantees freedom of religion but for some expressing that religion can be dangerous. you don't feel free you don't feel look then take fish because it belongs to your. way of life that it's not just a religious symbol it's also the symbol of a way of life. that's something david wants to be able to hand down to

his own children. my kids it's totally normal to wear it and to run around in it it's very hard to explain to a 3 year old that you have to cover it up because someone might run up and speak on him or harass him. that david would like to wear his skull cap all the time in public not just on the way into the synagogue. the w.'s william glue cross-post to the german government's anti semitism commissioner felix climb he began by asking him why anti semitism is an especially significant issue here in germany. as it is in germany is always something very special because the holocaust was invented here and happened here and of course we have to take a very very close look at the situation and with the description of the reality i wanted to trigger an honest. discussion and like in normal life i think
11:12 am
when you want to make a therapy you 1st have to analyze the situation this is what i did and i am quite satisfied that the discussion is so broad now that we have to protect jewish life in germany together politics the state and society as well and it comes in the context of all could stay which you are calling on all germans to wear a keep in solidarity with jews could stay which has origins in iran is to show support for the palestinian state it's inherently anti israel anti sinus would you also say it's anti-semitic absolutely i think it's absolutely unacceptable that 9 to 2000 in the year 2019 we hear enticing mythic anti jewish. slogans in particular in the city of lynn uncool 1st highly symbolic place and i think we all should stand up against that we should unite as german society
11:13 am
saying that we do not accept any form of anti-semitism here and i think it is a very good way to express solidarity with the jewish community if we where if you all keep our also because many people i think of the opinion in germany that occupies something not in here and that it is an exotic piece of clothes but it's it is not of the keep up belongs to germany it was always part of german culture of jewish culture and this is what you make clear when you have to keep on saturday. all right let's get you some sports news now and the champions league final kicking off today will see up 210-0000 tottenham and liverpool fans film interested to watch the big match either at the stadium or in local bars is that its capital security emergency coordinator has advised fans to behave during the match for else risk being arrested. spades capital city has more fans than available tickets ahead
