described the scene his office is in counted as a war zone. maybe we engaged with the suspect and i can tell you that it was. between those 4 officers and that's us but. we've recovered a 45 caliber handgun. with multiple magazines that were emptied at the time the suspect was reloading. and firing throughout the building and that officer. another u.s. city in shock and disbelief that this could happen on that doorstep one woman who was inside the building praised the swift action of 1st responders. i'm just going through a lot of emotion because it's 2 way too much killing going on and i'm just glad that they. time so we wouldn't be outside when everything was occurring.

beaches may have called it a devastating day. is for jeannie beach is. a senseless. and impose tremendous grief upon the people of virginia beach the commonwealth and this country. a country where mass shootings occur with disturbing frequency one monitoring group said it was the 150th mass shooting in the u.s. this year. correspondent michael caniggia is following the latest developments and he joins us now from washington so michael what is known so far about the suspect and a possible motive for this attack. well the suspect according to officials was a employee of the city and they have been media reports that he was fired from his
12:04 pm
job and that could have been a motive for his for the shooting but those reports have not been confirmed that he was a disgruntled employee and that mean that that was a motive for for the killing so it's not clear yet but we do know that he was a former employee of the city now michael we've also heard some reports that this man actually obtained his weapons legally is there any confirmation about that what kinds of weapons he was using. while he was apparently using a handgun and from what we know so far but we have to be careful because this is still very early those handguns were purchased legally which is not unusual because of course in virginia as in many u.s. states it is fairly easy to purchase handguns legally for ever citizens. so we also know that there are of already been dozens of shootings in the united
12:05 pm
states this year alone and you mentioned that carrying guns in the state of virginia is legal but what will it take how many more tragedies until gun laws in the u.s. might be changed or made more strict. to be honest i really don't know it seems that that it's i told you unclear what it would take to change the. the gun violence epidemic it has to be said that this is a gun violence epidemic in the us that these mass shootings occur with them with regular intervals in the us here and it is unclear what it will take to change that i myself have covered several of these mass shootings and there was always an outpouring of grief and support after those shootings but then there are hardly ever any consequences taken to try to prevent these acts from happening again in
12:06 pm
the future all right michael cannot go reporting from washington d.c. with thank you very much for that. let's get you up to speed now on some of the other stories making news around the world families of the victims of the riverboat tragedy in budapest have arrived to visit the scene and at least 7 south korean tourists died when a sightseeing boat sank on the river danube the search is underway to find the 21 people still missing but high water and fast currents are hampering the search efforts. a top mexican officials says his government wants to sharpen existing measures to stem a flood of central american migrants to the u.s. border this follows a threat by u.s. president donald trump to impose tariffs on mexico if it did not substantially halt illegal migration more undocumented migrants have been detained in recent months but the numbers reaching the u.s. border have still continued to rise. turning now to syria where
12:07 pm
a surge of fighting is expected in the last rebel held territory as government forces launch an all out offensive ground forces have been advancing on it live province under cover of syrian and russian airstrikes now the offensive marks an end to the 9 month cease fire backed by russia and turkey last september it's the biggest escalation in fighting since last. human rights groups are warning of an unprecedented humanitarian crisis the region is home to some 3000000 people. i'm joined now by 2 a yaakov son he's program director of care international in northwest syria in ghazi and have turkey which is near the syrian border thank you so much for being on our program so tell us from your perspective what this new offensive by the syrian government what does it mean for the 3000000 people who are still living in it live. yak good morning and thanks for having me it's
12:08 pm
a very dramatic situation we have around 3000000 people is in the province and it's important to remember that a big part of these people have already been displaced from their homes if not one could multiple times before since the shelling and heavy erica martin started on a month ago we've seen more than 270000 people fleeing homes getting out of the rules and seeking essentially safer places to stay in the northern part of italy closer to the turkish border we've seen more than 21 health facilities as reported by the u.n. has been built into reclean or the regular target it's as part of this offensive we've seen high number of schools attacked and of course also very high number of civilians affected by this so it's it's a very dramatic situation and as the situation continues to escalate it's about to be probably the biggest to appear catastrophe we've seen in syria so far now are
12:09 pm
you anticipating more people to make their way from the lip and head towards turkey . it's difficult to see i mean from now on the border areas on the syrians are close to turkey is extremely crowded already they have for years been sort of the most saving areas and so there is already if not hundreds of millions that are residing in makeshift camps. unfinished buildings and trying to seek basic assistance and protection there. whether they will cross the border or not is uncertain but you can ask yourself where would be will go with when there's nowhere else to goes in chile well we do know that turkey is already home to more than 3 and a half 1000000 refugees so what's next for them. that's right turkey is the biggest ritual the country in the world here is working both inside syria as part of our humanitarian response to this crisis and also in in turkey supporting the
12:10 pm
refugees there is is a of course a lot more stable situation to turkish side of the border there is access to basic services but it's important to remember that was such a high amount of refugees resort resource the depleted in the turkish society is stretched to its limits to try to cope with this miserable refugees. to a yaakov sun director of care international in syria many thanks indeed for your insights. thanks for having me all right some sports news now and the champions league final kicking off today will see up to 100000 tottenham and liverpool fans fill madrid to watch the big match thora days in the spanish capital are advising fans to behave during the match or else risk being arrested. spade's capital city has more fame and still available tickets ahead of the champions league kickoff and that could be a problem madrid's government delegation says over 4000 security personnel will be
12:11 pm
on hand due to the game being deemed a high risk match always we know that some b of the supporters we do have a bad behavior but we did deployment of police officer with really huge we would not have a problem if these people have to know that if they behave badly they will miss their what do you do to watch them much because they will be arrested and they will not have the opportunity to enjoy this for now it's still comin out here and fans are enjoying the experience. it's like a real dream sequence for the i never thought i would ever be in the champions league final so to come here and be in the final and be my family is just like a dream for me thousands are looking for a way into the stadium the going rate for a ticket has increased to thousands as well ah good looking for tickets. i think it's going to be like teams play attacking for. everyone wants to beat us so it's going to give us that. police have warned fans that
12:12 pm
a high number of counterfeit tickets are being sold so be where. and mark oregon 4th is here to talk about the big match so marco we just saw from that piece the spanish police are really not taking any chances are they but is it necessary are they being overly cautious or do you think it's a good idea well they have a well one recession for heavy handedness amongst people funds i would say the spanish police have actually experienced that myself i was a full n.c.a.a. recently for the europa league tie against glasgow celtic and i saw the police an auction and they were noticeably more aggressive than any police i've seen in other countries with football supporters i think and which funds as well have had a reputation. over the decades for big for causing trouble so that's probably in the back of the millions i think what's coming into play here is the on the number of funds that are traveling with the tickets and possibly 800000 people there you
12:13 pm
look at $70000.00 nearly a foot tickets so threw alcohol into the equation as well and it could be a heady mix hopefully everything goes off peacefully and the police don't feel the need to wait and well yeah they're going to be doing a lot of crowd control i think also to a large extent that's all right mark let's talk for a moment now about liverpool so their coach you're going club has lost 6 straight finals so just how significant is this game and how much nailbiting is he doing this is muscle for him he's tried to play it out in interviews he comes across as very he's very charismatic very relaxed but this will be on his mind it's very strange for him on the last the last coach to win the been this legal with a club side by munich yet this man has a reputation as being a loser so it's something of a monkey wants off his bike and i think the only facts of this different really with the previous finals is that we're pulling for it's going into this game and most previous finals he's been he's been an underdog really even against both spoken and played both sport both burge and finished higher in the leak they had
12:14 pm
the better side then so can his team handle the pressure of being favorites and can he handle that maybe maybe if they do then to morrow we'll be talking about him as a winner rather than a loser well as for tottenham they've actually never won champions league do you think they have a chance to actually do it this time they must have a chance i mean the way they've got to the final is absolutely incredible these crazy away goals victories against manchester city when it looked like they were out and then against as well with the last kick of the ball so i think a lot of spurs fans really feel that their names on the trophy this year just because of the way that they've got their spurs used to be kind of a byword for incompetence a club not being run well but it's really come on leaps and bones under the of course mature portraits you know and i think you've got a chance certainly the thousands of sports fans that are traveling to madrid certainly things so well i know you're going to be watching we're going to be watching at home as well this evening should be a very exciting match my corgan from dili's for it's always great to talk to you
12:15 pm
