liverpool dealt a killer blow substitute devil career driving home from a tight angle the semifinal hero rising to be occasions of silver 3 once again to nail the final school liverpool the champions of europe for a 6th time. i. had to talk about the vague match i'm joined here in the studio by d.w. sports reporter mark oregon and standing by in madrid for us is hecho flora's the head go let's start with you so we have to admit it was not exactly the most spectacular match but i assume liverpool fans are not caring too much about that what is the atmosphere like in madrid. all the city here in madrid it is a party has been a party since last night it was a business very square what other thought were more with liverpool fans gathered after the final whistle to party

a lot above all the fans that you have tickets to go to the stadium some didn't even have a place to stay last night so far just partied and drank the night away and this morning we got to see some fans still waking up from literally sleeping on the streets here but i guess of the price you have to pay to be called your be a champ all right seems like a really crazy party vote mark you know liverpool coach you're going to club of course lost to his previous 2 european finals so he must be on cloud 9 he must be super thrilled about last night's victory pretty please don't think i mean you mentioned the 2 european finals you've lost it lost his last 6 consecutive finals in all competitions so he was pretty hot let's hear his reaction. i don't want to explain why we wanted only one enjoyed everyone and all the rest is not important it's for all the people around the world in the stadium with. knowledge celebrating like crazy and. liverpool we would celebrate together we would have

a sensational night. all right i mean he still seems kind of calm for someone who stephen just succeeded in the sense of victory but mark how important is this win for you and i think that was the warm glow of contentment there that we saw it as a massive victory for him as a breakthrough victory really mention those 6 consecutive finals that you lost for a month one tube in this league titles on the german cup to have a reputation as a loser was a little bit unfair but lose those trials for quite quite a long way in the pos no people were starting to muster has he had he lost so this was a massive victory for him to show the world to show the rest of europe no i've got what it takes he's european champion no no one will take away from him and he's never in the pantheon of liverpool greats that the great managers like rafa benitez bob paisley what's next for him is to try and build on not and try and win the elusive leaked title but they've not managed to do since 1990. now go ahead of this

match there were some worries about possible clashes between spanish police and rowdy english fans how did things play out. for most sports here are things in madrid a work quite calm we did see some of the fans getting a bit rowdy also there was a lot of police presence here in madrid that's what you have to do at this time of events have the police presence there we did see some of the fans as mentioned getting rowdy and also the police. getting all that through a little bit through physical with the fans close to the stadium however for the most part of the mention. the atmosphere here was a good one and when it came to violence between fans and police we saw very little . all right well for tottenham fans however it was not a good night what does this defeat mean for them it was a really sore defeat for i think because of the nature of the way that the we've

got to the final the squeaks passed away goals 3 past one just a city with a strange view. they are decision and i think a lot of tottenham fans felt this was a real once in a lifetime perhaps chance to get to the champions league final when you compare them to liverpool with a pool got more spending power you can see them getting brighter for spars this would have been a chance if they'd wanted to really create a legacy let me mention with liverpool for the other problem for spurs as their manager machismo to push you to know he's really changed the culture of the club taken away the sort of reputation of incompetence that spurs. as a question mark over his future neither is he going to stay he can see before the final that perhaps he would go so that's another concern for spurs funds whether funds will be political today though indeed mark oregon from d.w. sports and go flores with us from madrid thanks to both of you. we'd like to take you back now to our breaking news story this hour the head of

germany's social democrats underhand allas has announced she's stepping down the move comes after her party suffered a double election defeat knowledge base pressure after the social democrats suffered their worst ever result in last month's european elections the s.p.d. also lost a state election in braman for the 1st time in over 70 years senior party members are due to meet on monday to discuss the party's future and direction. well for some analysis on all this i'm joined in the studio now by d.w. political correspondent kate brady hi there to you kate so well no it was supposed to put her leadership of the party to a vote tuesday so why the sudden resignation well that was the vote that was planned for choosing which at the moment still seems to be going ahead that's not confirmed yet whether that will go ahead or not that's actually for the palm entry group leaderships or not it's actually held 2 positions in the s.p.d.
11:10 am
is a party leader and the leader of the parliamentary group. which is something we have here in the german parliament so it's still unclear whether that's going to take place but it really seems that she's taken this decision out of the hands of her party and eventually probably most likely her party members as well if you look around the german media especially this morning there's quite a few headlines and piece of commentary already coming out about this being a surprise but actually if you look at the way that the things have played out for the s.p.d. for the social democrats in the last few months if not years this really doesn't come as a surprise and what a week they've had as well it was only it's only 7 days ago that as you mentioned the s.p.d. so fit huge losses in the european election and in a very important 60 state election as well here in germany and that was a huge blow to the social democrats now initially after there's a results came out the results in the european elections were
11:11 am
a record low for the social democrats at around 50 only 15 percent making the muchly now the strongest party in germany which of course is not a good sign considering that they are currently in the government as well with angela merkel's conservative cd. this really was a huge blow to the social democrats are all right so if under $10.00 is no longer going to be at the helm of the s p d is it's clear who could potentially replace her what would it mean for the structure of the leadership of the party well there's really no obvious candidate right now. that is being thrown around already this morning is all up shots he's currently the german finance minister and also the vice chancellor but right now apart from that there is no real candidate obviously there with plenty of people that want him to throw their hat into the ring or maybe not as we've seen. sorry i'm sorry and now this actually has only
11:12 am
been in that position as party leader for just over a year and. create a pretty decisive martin shultz as well went out with a pretty bad defeat back in 2017 during the german federal election so whether someone would be willing to take the test right now is another question that needs to be asked as well but not listed make it clear in her statement as well this morning that part of her decision to step down and not go to the vote on should stay or rather put herself forward for that vote again as parliamentary group was to enable a smear. and an orderly handover that's what she said to her successor so we really will have to see of course there's some going to have to be a big shake up now in the social democrats but again this does sound like a bit of a case of deja vu here like we're back again we've had this conversation so many times about how the social democrats are going to be new and revitalized the party
11:13 am
to win back that profile and they'll be a lot of people especially people who opposed the social democrats going back into another coalition with angle of michael's conservatives and will be no doubt a lot of people this morning pointing their finger and saying we told you so because this really has backfired there's a lot of issues here that need to be tackled in terms of why the s.p.d. has done so badly which consequently has led some. of resignation as well this morning well it's not only in germany that the central left parties have been struggling we saw again not only german the german social democratic party do poorly in the european parliamentary elections and other european countries as well the center left parties very disappointing results. are they facing a real crisis center left parties more broadly across europe they really always seen this pattern all across europe as you say and there really has been
11:14 am
a loss of profile it in a lot of countries you love the traditional works of course the social democrats particularly here in germany often stood for the traditional blue collar workers and some of those industries just don't exist anymore and the s.p.d. has struggled to find its position on germany's political spectrum and of course as well having been 3 out of 4 of merkel's governing coalition is now the social democrats of reading found themselves in a personality crisis they've moved further and further towards the center of germany's political spectrum leaving the conservatives to even take some of their policies which have been of course to the much of the game really of angela merkel and her conservatives and so we're seeing this pattern across europe right now democrats are struggling to see where do they go next and of course who is benefiting benefiting from this right now it's the greens and we saw that again
11:15 am
last weekend in the european elections where we had historic highs for the green party in countries across the european union but particularly here in europe and this being a couple of opinion polls now this week which is now putting the greens at germany's strongest party. political correspondent kate brady thank you. you're up to date on the w. news thanks for watching. what secrets lie behind these memos. but find out in an immersive experience and explore fascinating board cultural heritage sites. the d w world heritage 360. i'm not nothing out of the jet i guess sometimes i am but i said nothing which is that the job.
