a night of celebration in madrid where the match was played. thanks for joining us i'm mary and i haven't seen germany's social democrats lose another leader under way and all this has announced she's stepping down after just 14 months in the job her announcement comes as her party agonizes over its future following a double election defeat nala space pressure after german voters handed the social democrats their worst ever result in last month's european elections and the s.p.d. also lost a state election in braman for the 1st time in over 70 years senior party members are due to meet monday to discuss the party's future direction.
12:02 pm
all right let's get some analysis on this and for that i'm joined by political correspondent kate brady so kate knowledges was supposed to put her leadership of the parliamentary group to vote just on tuesday 2 days from now so why this sudden resignation exactly she's taken this decision out of her hands and she actually informed the party this morning in a statement announcing her regular resignation both as party leader of the social democrats and of the parliamentary group we can have a look now at that statement in which she said that discussions in the parliamentary group and feedback from the party of sharon i no longer have the necessary support to carry out my duties and so she will be standing down as s.p.d. party leader and as the leader of the parliamentary group as of tomorrow so did this statement from knowledge's take her party members by surprise what's been their reaction it's a new has been a little bit of
12:03 pm
a surprise in the short term we think she'd already pulled forward to this this vote that was planned for choose day on her leadership of the parliamentary group that was actually planned for september that already being brought forward because of the diaries the record lows for the social democrats here in germany in last week's european elections and also in a very important state election for them that took part that took place story on the same weekend there has been a real mixed bag of reactions from the social democrats this morning. so my expression that regret of course knowledge led to the posse really into this current coalition government that we have here in germany with angela merkel's conservative cd here and she really valid to the party forward there was this whole plan to a new and revitalize the party but so far she has been able to do anything but that it seems of course they missed the boat again when it came to tackling the correct issues when it came to the us. paean elections and now they find themselves in 3rd
12:04 pm
position as the 3rd strongest party in germany which of course doesn't spell good news when they're currently in the governing coalition all right so fundamentalists was not able to give the s.p.d. the turnaround to that they were hoping for as their leader is there someone else who's poised to take her spot it's very difficult to say right now of course she said in her statement today that she was hoping hoping for an orderly handover which is why she decided as well to step back as party leader. but one name that is already doing the rounds today is all off shots who is currently the german finance minister and also the vice chancellor so he could indeed possibly be a comes in a candidate but we will have to see of course whether anyone wants to take on that responsibility now in what's becoming a rather curse position in the in the s.p.d. is another question of course not this is pretty decisive. step down only
12:05 pm
a game ago was martin schultz there were high hopes for him ahead of the german election in 2017 and he just crushed out with quite a bang after the german elections at the time those were historic lows for the social democrats and now they've plummeted even further down those opinion polls with andrea analysis at the helm so i will have to say of the coming days who is going to be throwing their hat in the ring all right well with the leadership of the s.p.d. still certain what does that mean for the social democrats ability to govern i mean they're in a grand coalition with the c.d.u. is that coalition under threat now. i think it is and they expect to say that the coalition is under threat again if it wasn't already questions were already being asked last weekend after the results of the european elections where not only the social democrats but also on. cause conservative c.d.u.
12:06 pm
in the bavarian sister party the c.s.u. they all suffered huge losses the days there should democrats they lost more than a 1000000 voters to the greens and the c.d.u. the conservative c.d.u. also i'm say there are questions being asked right now how can they win these voters back this isn't a one off protest which was you know the kind of terminology we're hearing being thrown around after the general election of the federal election back in 2017 this is a growing trend there is less and less desire in germany to vote for these formally big tent parties and more centrist parties of the social democrats and the conservative c.d.u. so this still wouldn't the game a lot more soul searching to do and it will be interesting to see now how once again the s.p.d. proposes. its suggestion to tackle this and they'll win back those voters but right now it's seems that they're making the task even more difficult for
12:07 pm
themselves and already ones. political correspondent kate brady thank you for your analysis. let's get you up to speed now on some of the other stories making news around the world a poll shows john germany's greens have overtaken chancer on the americans conservatives for the 1st time to become the most popular party 27 percent say they would back the party in an election that puts them one point ahead of americans bloc of applicants for visas to be united states are now required to hand over its social media user names previous email addresses and phone numbers dating back 5 years the change took effect on friday and applies to nearly all these applicants as part of the trump administration's expansion of screening for would be immigrants and visitors. israeli defense forces have fired of military positions in syria syrian state media report that at least 3 soldiers were killed early on

12:09 pm
smashed a powerful drive down the middle of spurs keep a shooter recedes goal the egyptian forwards 5th goal of the european campaign putting liverpool in the driving seat after a blistering start the game chicken a cagey with me the side threatening for large parts of the game taught them only came to life late on with sunshine men waiting until the final 20 minutes to give liverpool defender something to worry about with the game entering its final throws liverpool dealt a killer blow substitute divil to read the driving home from a tight tangle the semifinal hero rising to be occasion to sylvia cheree once again to nail the final school liverpool the champions of europe for a 6th time. i am to talk about the vig match i'm joined here in the studio by d.w. sports reporter mark oregon and standing by in madrid for us is head coach flores head go let's start with you so we have to admit it was not exactly the most spectacular match but i assume liverpool fans are not caring too much about that
12:10 pm
what is the atmosphere like in madrid. for the city here in madrid it's a party has been a party since last night it was a business very square what other thought were mostly liverpool fans gathered after the final whistle to party a lot of of all the fans that here have tickets to go to the stadium some didn't even have a place to stay last night so it's all just party than drank the night away and this morning we got to see some fans still waking up from literally sleeping on the streets here but i guess of the price you have to pay to be called european champion seems like a really crazy party will mark you know liverpool coach you're going club of course a loss to his previous to european finals so he must be on cloud 9 he must be super thrilled about last night's victory pretty pleased to think i mean you mentioned the 2 european finals you've lost it lost his last 6 consecutive finals in all competitions so he was pretty close let's hear his reaction. i don't want to
12:11 pm
explain why we wanted to only want to enjoy that we wanted and all the rest is not important it's for all the people around the world in the stadium with. knowledge celebrating like crazy and. to morrow liverpool and we would celebrate together we would have a sensational night all right i mean he still seems kind of calm for someone who stephen just succeeded in his victory but mark how important is this win for you and i think that was the warm glow of contentment there that we saw it's a massive victory for head and it's a breakthrough victory really and we mentioned those 6 consecutive finals that it lost for a month one tube in this league titles on the german cup to have a reputation as a loser was a little bit unfair but those those trials for quite quite a long way in the past no people were starting to muster has he lost it so this was a massive victory for him to show the world to show the rest of europe no i've got
12:12 pm
what it takes he's european champion no no no way from him and he's never in the pantheon of liverpool greats there with the great managers like rafa benitez bob paisley what's next for him is to try and build on not and try and win the elusive leak title but not much to do since 1990. now here go ahead of this match there were some worries about possible clashes between spanish police and rowdy english fans how do things play out. for the most part here are things in madrid weren't quite calm we did see some of the fans getting a bit rowdy also there was a lot of police presence here in madrid that's what you have to do at this time of events have the police presence there we did see some of the fans as mentioned getting rowdy and also the police. getting all that a little bit through physical with the fans close to the stadium however for the most part of the mention the the atmosphere here was
12:13 pm
a good one and when it came to violence between fans and police we saw very little . that will mark love for tottenham fans whoever it was not a good night what does this defeat mean for them it was a really sore defeat for top i think because of the nature of the way that they got to the final the squeaks passed away goals 3 pos manchester city with a strange v.a.r. decision and i think a lot of tottenham fans felt this was a real once in a lifetime perhaps chance to get to the champions league final when you compare them to liverpool would have pulled up more spending power you can see them getting brighter for spars this would have been a chance if they'd wanted to really create a legacy like you mention with liverpool for the other problem for spars as their manager much of mercer port city know he's really changed the culture of the club taken away the sort of reputation of incompetence that's bars and there's a question mark over his future no is he going to stay he can see before the final that perhaps he would go so that's another concern for spurs fans liverpool fans
12:14 pm
will be political today though indeed my cardigan from sports and hippo flores with us from madrid thanks to both of you. now 2 opposing rallies on israel faced off in berlin on saturday the annual al quds day protest which opposes israeli control of jerusalem was met by hundreds of pro israel demonstrators just meters away rallies come after debate has grown in recent weeks over anti semitic incidents in germany doubly reporter kid brady was at the demonstrations. the same procedure as every year since the 1980 s. could stay has been marked in germany with an anti israel demonstration. but critics deem it as anti semitic with reports of far right extremists radical islamic groups and holocaust deniers also among the crowd participants see it differently. we're not protesting against jews or judaism but against israel and
12:15 pm
against zionism the home is here why am i here because i think it's from the palestine it's gone it's our rights to defend palestine and this is always out based on policy that's what at that time to get in response to the annual protest germany's anti semitism commission a call for all germans to take to the streets in solidarity with jews and israel some protestors jews and non jews want to keep this year's protest was made all the most significant after a reported increase in anti-semitic crimes the rest of them my aim is to end all this against the jews that they are no longer targeted i think it's a disgrace for germany it's what. we want to make it clear statement against stay every year as they march through berlin and spread their and.
