on t.w. . this is d.w. news live from berlin it's goodbye for the head of germany's social democrats and today in dollars is stepping down after her center left party foul to historic lows in the european elections and at home it's all part of a bigger political shake up here in germany we'll have analysis for you also coming up.
2:01 pm
thanks for joining us i'm mary and i haven't seen germany's social democrats have lost another leader and today nala says she's stepping down after just 14 months on the job she also plans to give up her seat in the german parliament her announcement comes as her party agonizes over its future following a double election defeat nala space pressure after german voters handed the social democrats their worst ever result in last month's european elections the s.p.d. also lost a state election with brain men for the 1st time in over 7 years senior party members are due to meet on monday to discuss the party's future direction. well now released a written statement about her decision she wrote. discussions in the parliamentary

group and feedback from the party of shown that i no longer have the necessary support to carry out my duties on monday i will therefore resign as chair of the s.p.d. and on tuesday i will resign as chair of the s.p.d. parliamentary group all right let's get some analysis on all of this and for that i'm joined in the studio by our political correspondent kate brady said hello to you kate. underpaying aulus was actually supposed to put her leadership to a vote just this coming tuesday so why the sudden resignation exactly i mean this really is a direct response to those die of results that we saw for the social democrats here in germany and also in other parts of europe as well in last week's e.u. elections of course those results left the social democrats in. that currently the 3rd strongest party in germany they walked away with just under 16 percent of the
2:03 pm
vite that's a wreck old labor for the social democrats so this is certainly a direct response from that and as we saw there in the statement knowledge has taken this as a sign from vises and from of the party members that this is her time to go well with these very disappointing results i mean this is also quite a blow for knowledge as she was seen for a long time by many as the person who would give her party the s.p.d. a fresh start so what went wrong she really was seen as a bit of a hope to move the s.p.d. forward but of course there was also a lot of criticism at the time that she wouldn't move the social democrats far enough away from the sense of the geminis political spectrum and further back to the left and that's something that the s.p.d. the social democrats are still trying to grapple with is who are they who do they represent a posse but we can have a look now exactly who i'm sorry and alice was or is and what she stands for.
2:04 pm
sundry analysis 1st joined the social democratic party more than 20 years ago as the leader of the party's youth organization she studied german and political science in one of her very 1st interviews she told g w that a career in politics was not in the cards. chopping it for you but i don't want to stay in politics for the rest of my life so after being chair i want to look for a real job and for that i need a good degree. cruz says but after finishing university 4 years later now it's rose in the ranks of the s.p.d. 1st as a parliamentarian then labor minister and ultimately party leader germany's minimum wage law 1st introduced in 2015 was one of her key achievements now as has a reputation for being outspoken after her rousing speech at an s.p.d. convention party members agree to change course and form a coalition with angela merkel's conservatives rather than enter the opposition.
2:05 pm
designed we're going to negotiate and get some more good results that's why voting yes today is worth it. now as was the party's 1st female leader since it was founded more than 150 years ago she was tasked with steering the s.p.d. back to its left wing roots but many are now asking if the decision to again partner with the center right c.d.u. was indeed worth it. all right kate while with nala stepping down what's next for the s.p.d. well there will be a lot of soul searching now to see exactly how they are speedy wants to move forward as a party or are we actually going to see a leader that is going to move the social democrats further left and of course that could have huge repercussions in terms of the s.p.d. role in the governing grand coalition of course this is a huge deal. as well she's currently the leader of that governing coalition the so-called grand coalition between the conservatives and the social democrats
2:06 pm
but if the. last year and also it was shown as anything but grand about that coalition right now both the conservatives and the s.p.d. and doing extremely badly in the polls right now but the c.d.u. merkel's conservatives have come out today and said that they want to push for was with this grand coalition but of course it is extremely fragile and the fact is well the angela merkel has self is due to give a statement later today following this resignation of the s.p.d. leader say's a lot about the significance of this move and how serious this could be for germany's government which was already extremely fragile well kate is there any indication of who could possibly replace and hand knowledge in her role as leader of the party and also her parliamentary seat well there's no real likely successor right now which of course was also a bit of a problem just over a year ago as well when i'm dry analysis self became party leader of the party
2:07 pm
leader of the social democrats and she was actually suggested by her previous essay he will say went out with a rather than paying baron after the s.p.d. slid down the polls as well in the federal election in 2017 so whether someone would be very willing to take on that job which angle of it which i'm very analogous is only being able to hold onto for a year is another question. political correspondent kids really thank you so so much for your insights. let's turn now to some of the other stories making news around the world. a poll shows germany's greens have overtaken chancellor angela merkel's conservatives for the 1st time to become the most popular party 27 percent say they would back the party in an election that puts them one point ahead of merrill's walk. several people are reported injured after

2:11 pm
a party has been a party since last night it was a business very square what about it sort of were more with liverpool fans gathered after the final whistle to party a lot of all of the fans that here have tickets to go to the stadium something i have a place to stay with us i so thought of just a party dance prank the night away and this morning we got to see some fans still waking up from literally sleeping on the streets here but i guess of the price you have to pay to be called european champion all right seems like a really crazy party vote mark you know liverpool coach you're going club of course a loss to his previous to european finals so he must be on cloud 9 you must be super thrilled about last night's victory pretty please don't think i mean you mentioned the 2 european finals you've lost it lost his last 6 consecutive finals in all competitions so he was pretty hot let's hear his reaction. i don't want to explain why we wanted to only want to enjoy that we wanted and all the rest is not

important it's for all the people around the world in the stadium with. knowledge celebrating like crazy and. the more we live a pool. together we would have a sensational night all right i mean he still seems kind of calm for someone who stephen just succeeded in his victory but mark how important is this win for you and i think that was the warm glow of contentment there that we saw it's a massive victory for him and it's a breakthrough victory really mention those 6 consecutive finals that you lost for a man that one tube in this league titles on the german cup to have a reputation as a loser was a little bit unfair but lose those trials for quite quite a long way in the past no people were starting to muster has he had he lost it so this was a massive victory for him to show the world to show the rest of europe you know i've got what it takes he's european champion no no we'll take it from him and he's now in the pantheon of liverpool greats there with the great managers like rafa

benitez bob paisley what's next for him is to try and build on not and try and when the elusive league title not managed to do since 1990. now here go ahead of this match there were some worries about possible clashes between spanish police and rowdy english fans how did things play out. for the most part here are things in madrid a work quite calm we did see some of the fans getting a bit rowdy also there was a lot of police presence here in madrid that's what you have to do with this kind of events have the police presence there we did see some of the fans as mentioned getting rowdy and also the police. getting all that a little bit too physical with the fans close to the stadium however for the most part of the mention the the atmosphere here was a good one and when it came to violence between fans and police we saw very little . that will mark love for tottenham fans whoever it was not
2:14 pm
a good night what does this defeat mean for them it was a really sore defeat for tottenham i think because of the nature of the way that the they've got to the final the squeaks past an away goal sweep past month just a city with a strange v.a.r. decision and i think a lot of them fans felt this was a real once in a lifetime perhaps chance to get to the champions league final when you compare them to liverpool with a pool got more spending power you can see them getting bright but for stars this would have been a chance if they wanted to really create a legacy like you mention with liverpool the other problem for spars as their manager mitchell committee report sheets you know he's really changed the culture of the club taken away the sort of reputation of incompetence that's far as hot as a question mark over his future know is he going to stay he can see before the final that perhaps he would go so that's another concern for spars funds where the funds will be all about today it will indeed my cardigan from sports and head of flora's with us from madrid thanks to both of you. and before we go
